These are good tips for all holidays, not just backpacking. I circumnavigated the island of Ireland via the Stranraer to Larne ferry, having hitched to Scotland. Stayed in Youth Hostels, one B&B and with friends. I took an old backpack which with contents weighed maybe 10 - 15 pounds or so. Very easy. And for example you could hire a horse in Killarney, and ride on the actual racecourse if there's no-one around!
can i just say this is by far the best video for packing tips. everything is spot on. i just got back from backpacking SEA & Oz . managed to live with just a carry on. perfect tips. Respect
This is so helpful! I'm going to Canada for 10 months at the beginning of next year and as someone who knows nobody who has backpacked before or anyone who has done extensive travel, I needed something to tell me the essentials and the logical things to bring. I could read websites but I don't have enough attention span for their long ass paragraphs that ramble on and on so thank you so much for making this. You're making my life so much better😂
Dude ear plugs are the most important thing... I did stay in hostels and even worst huts on hiking tracks were ppl sleeping right next to you... ear plugs are an essential equipment
That wasnt intended for you dear sir...it was for Karl dude sorry musta not put it in the right comment part...i was suggesting a new video...but...yeah i feel u on them earplugs hee
LOTR's reference made me chuckle. But in all in all this was a great help. I was set on buying myself hat gloves etc. For when i go away not even thinking that i could buy them when i get there. Thanks.
Sir Amazing Karl ! you have eased our lives and traveling. Really all packing suggestions are so fantastic that it unload 75% of unnecessary luggage and mental burden and enable you to live your travel dream to the fullest. I especially like the fabulous chicken reference regarding my wish to drag my kitchen & chicken around!!! JUST FABULOUS! YOU ARE PRECIOUS!!!
Going to buy some packing cubes now!! I'm backpacking through NZ for 7 weeks over the new year with Kiwi Experience (Thanks to your HK2NY series for inspiring me to go!!)
I have not decided whether or not I like packing cubes because I find that I can use my space much more efficiently if I roll all of my clothing items. For example, I have the Ospreay Farpoint 40 backpack, and I simply roll all of my clothing in there.
Hi Karl,I also love to travel and have had my channel for a couple of years,I came across your channel while looking for videos on my next adventure,Hong Kong...I have now watched all your travel videos and have to say they are fantastic. You should be extremely proud of the videos Karl.Cant wait to se your next adventure.....John
duuude this is such a great episode. we encountered the pen issue so many times with filling out immigration things and such. and made the mistake of bringing huge jackets for Patagonia. I love the layering idea. got the exact charge battery. excellent tips. I eventually plan to release a vid showing what I brought but I'm going to suggest your video to everyone before viewing mine. expert advise. well done pal.
Amazing man! This is huge. Getting ready for my 12 month Nee Zealand / Australia trip in the spring. Re watching all of your videos to try and pick up little tips and tricks. Cheers
Nice video man! Really useful.....though i do now need to get some packing cubes before saturday when im off to Thailand 😊 keep them coming man.....mega excited about the African adventure!
I do not aggry on some point. If you want to take nice clothes to dress up, you definitly can ! I do it everywhere I go all around the world and I take only a small carry on backpack . A shirt can fit in a bag exactly like a tshirt. And actually if you pack well, shirt stays clean, and you can iron them at the laundry most of time (so you can bring 1 white shirt, you use it, you clean and then you can use it again, and white shirt can fit in all combination - the most dress up to the casual style - a non iron shirt is better of course). About pants, a dark blue jean do the job very well, yes it does ! For a minimum of confort a jean with a a bit of stretch (2-3% of élasthanne max) and you can do everything with (including treck). Anyway ... it's the same with every clothes.
really enjoy that Karl, really great advice, am so looking forward to ur film tip video , i being a photography i also film bit of my trip n how to edit well, what look for ,cut ,tools love no thank :) get better at it
I say bring some smart/casual clothes, in case you're invited to a club or restaurant or another social gathering in the evening. I know it's more clothes to carry, but it stops you from feeling woefully underdressed, and you'll blend in more wearing nicer shoes than those walking shoes that most backbackers can easily be identified by..
Travel lists that tell you to bring your passport and a smile infuriate me! I think the best thing I brought was a plastic knife, fork and spoon set that folded into each other, was so much better than a spork! We were in a hostel with no kitchen, the restaurants were too expensive and I was the only one with a knife that could cut through the bread and cheese we all pitched in to buy.
Hope will be ok with my wheel bag it is about 9 kg full as travelling for a year and need hot and cold and some smart clothes and stuff, and light daypack. I am going on organised cheap trip part of time and cant put backpack on my back as asthmatic and dont support xtra weight on my body. Hopefully for visiting sites will be able to leave bpack on vehicle or at accommodation first. Phone battery pack and chargers essential and great life saver ... also have tiny ipod type item and kindle... never take laptop. Tip .. hide valuable in small purse under my clothes and arm lol...
Probably the most useful video I have seen. Wouldn't have thought to pack extra visa photos or a charger. I also thought packing cubes were just a luxury that heaps of chicks use, but I guess I'm sold now 👌🏽 thanks! X
Very useful tips. Thank you :) Just one question: How do you keep your camera gear safe when filming on a beach for example and want to go into the water? Do you bring it back to the hostel first or just leave it in your bag on the beach? I'm thinking about filming my next trip and I'm worried about my camera getting stolen.
Great video and thanks for answering my question! For filming video, what is your procedure of filming? I mean, do you have your camera ON all the time? How do you manage storage?
When the guy in the shop said packing cubes will change my life I thought 'what is he on'. But it's true! I wouldn't do without them now! #changeslives
Karl, Thanks for all the tips mate! very interested in the video filming and editing Q&A... what kind of editor do you use? how do you incorporate film clips, music, etc in your productions? any issue with copyrights, etc? cheers, -Jeff
After doing your HK2NY trip for 9 months. Would you say that is a once in a life time event or would you and James strongly consider sitting down and working for another 3 years to save the money to go again? 3 years saving to 9 months travel, was it worth it in the end? in simple terms, You would have to do nothing but work and save for 12 years to go traveling for just 3 years
Slightly off topic... Say you're going to the beach or a nice waterfall and you want to go in the water. Where do you put your electronics? Or do you have to leave them locked away at the hostel and not get any photos?
Do you have any advice on what sort of travel insurance to get, especially for a long trip (6 months - 1year) where you don't know exactly where you will be heading or what sorts of activities you'll be doing?
Do you recommend Portable Solar Panel Charger(charging gopro and phones etc ) for long trips or mostly for hiking where you are out in the wild with no power supply?
Thanks for the advice! I'm going on a 3 month trip which includes India and several SEA countries, what do you do currency-wise when you go on trips with multiple countries?
Hi Karl, what would you recommend for a backpack that you can carry on budget airlines (ryanair particularly)? and How do you carry your backpack on budget airlines? :D
Do you edit as you go along on your trips? If so, how do you find the time/energy/motivation? If not, is it something that you've ever considered? What would you think of someone trying to do that, would it depend etirely on the person and on the travel pace?
I'm looking forward to seeing you backpacking from Armenia all the way through Georgia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekiztan, Kazakhstan, Siberia and Russia as your last destination.
Karl, have you done a video covering this topic yet? I'm going travelling for a year in 2018 and would like to get a good video of the trip. I'm in no way tech-minded though, so your help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.
Also, just to say I'm really looking forward to seeing your New Zealand trip. You've got the best travel videos on youtube, man. Keep up the good work!
I can imagine that you are getting a deluge of questions here. Sorry about that for adding to the problem. My question is about Visas. Do you need to get several visas before you leave home? Once going into Brazil from Argentina I got my visa to Brazil when I was in Uruguay. What are your views on that? The second topic is the video equipment that you carry with you. Can you talk about that?
Great video! And a wonderful no bull shit approach to packing :) On a side note: is your liver ok? The darkness around your eyes might be caused by a liver imbalance.
Oh God now I'm imagining a 3 year old Karl looking like a toddler-MMA deadbeat! ...aaannnd now I see a real boy version of Chucky every time i close my eyes....How am I going to sleep?! Fuck it, movie marathon it is...
Yep to all of them... just one more if you're extra picky when it comes to dirty cloths... bring a travel ziploc space bag with you... why a ziploc? It seals smell, no time to fold dirty cloths nicely to make them fit in your bag.Once you seal it and take the air out, it really helps with space. Easy to carry the bag to the laundry ( less mess).

Id like to see you invite the Real' friends u made n do one on England? Maybe? Like a reunion...lol
@@cassiefisher9924 I mean ppl u dont know who sleep right next to u. I basicaly have no idea what ur talking about...
That wasnt intended for you dear sir...it was for Karl dude sorry musta not put it in the right comment part...i was suggesting a new video...but...yeah i feel u on them earplugs hee
This should be a public service announcement for all backpackers ;)
Thanks for the tips
LOTR's reference made me chuckle. But in all in all this was a great help. I was set on buying myself hat gloves etc. For when i go away not even thinking that i could buy them when i get there. Thanks.
What method did you use for accessing your money while away? Did you use your regular debit card, pre-paid etc.
Thank you, that’s a very realistic and simple video with extremely useful tips. Thank you so much
Glad it was useful 😊👍
Watched so many vids like this but you still had some good new points to make
Thanks
Just the video I needed to watch so I can prepare for my trip to Iceland. Cheers!
Going to buy some packing cubes now!! I'm backpacking through NZ for 7 weeks over the new year with Kiwi Experience (Thanks to your HK2NY series for inspiring me to go!!)
Haha samwise bringing the pots and pans! Thanks for this video, well useful. Will be sure to re watch before going on my next adventure!
It wouldn't be a Karl Watson video without a reference to a movie. :D

It's less about saving space, more about keeping stuff organised, quicker and easier to pack and unpack
Never tried packing cubes. Will give it a shot. Thanks for your tips!

I actually bursted out laughing when you brought up good ol Samwise Gamgee, being the only person who's ever brought pots and pans.
Haha 😊
Thanks for answering the question! Looking forward to the next Travel Q&A Episode.
Never used the packing cubes, they look great. Thanks for the tips buddy
Dude, you are so cool for providing all your useful advice. Thank you for all your effort!!!
You should make videos on how you would pack if you went on a 1month trip/6 month trip or 1 year trip.
Nice video man! Really useful.....though i do now need to get some packing cubes before saturday when im off to Thailand 😊 keep them coming man.....mega excited about the African adventure!
Karl Watson: Travel Documentaries.... guessing you're new to them to then 😂😂
Thanks for answering my question! In hindsight it was probably a bit dumb of me to think places might not have laundry facilities haha
