I have the Osprey Farpoint 55L. One hack I ALWAYS do to get the bag on the plane is to use the 40L main pack as your carry-on, and then detach the 15L daypack and use that as your personal item. I've never been stopped from taking it on this way, even on carriers like RyanAir and AirAsia!

I just came back from a 3 month Europe trip and the Osprey Farpoint 55 was an amazing backpack! It was big enough to carry everything I needed, yet it was small enough to use as carry-on! Highly recommend!

When I'm staying in hostels I make a little "night time bag". It contains make up wipes, my toothbrush, my eye mask and melatonin. I leave it under my pillow when I head out for the day/night and that way, if I get back to the hostel after hours and it's dark I can easily find my sleeping essentials! I also tuck my pjs under there too:)

I noticed whenever people talk about the reason for carry-on only they never mention the main reason I do carry on only. Lost luggage. I don't think I can think of anything worse than showing up at your destination just to find out that your bag is in who the hell knows.

    • @takayasweeney

Same, I will never check a bag again.

    • @FaerieDust

I've lost a bag ONCE, and it was the one time I shoved all the things I NEVER check in in my suitcase... I'd caught a horrible cold and decided that I didn't want to bother with a carry-on for my return trip, shoved everything but my phone and my passport in my bag & checked it, aaaand of course the plane arrived at my home airport with exactly zero checked bags.
I'd checked my coat, my glasses AND contacts (I only had the pair I'd been wearing plus ONE backup pair - and I wear dailies), my wallet, and even my prescription meds. It only took like two days for my bag to get back to me, but that's two days where I was almost-but-not-quite functionally blind.
Some mistakes you really only make once 🤣🤣

I have the Patagonia MLC, I really like this bag. My wife and I recently spent a month in Italy and Austria and was a great travel bag. The bag has a lot pockets on the inside and central part of the bag was open. A great bag for dashing between train stations.

Tom Bihn makes incredible bags, I have the Synapse 19 and it's the best all around travel and EDC bag ever. They also have the 25 liter and a new Hero's Journey I would definitely purchase for a intercontinental trip, their quality is unmatched and they're hand made in the US with a lifetime warranty.

    • @dimm0k
      @dimm0k 7 лет назад +2

honestly Tom Bihn bags are pretty nice, I have the Synapse 25, but had I see this review for the Osprey Farpoint I may have gone in that direction. The Synapse is well built, but design wise I find it to be a bit lacking for long periods of use especially if you have a smaller frame like myself. the shoulder straps of the newer Synapse are a little further apart and without the sternum straps the bag gets uncomfortable quick.

I recently returned from an almost month long trip in Italy and I used the Osprey Porter 46. Great bag. Locking zippers, which you can hide under the compression wings. For a day pack I picked up the Eddie Bauer 20 liter Stoway. It has hard rings, so I used some carabiniers to attach it to my osprey leaving no outward zippers exposed.

I used the same Red Osprey Farpoint 55L you guys reviewed for my 10 month trip around Southeast Asia and East Asia.. AND I'm still using it now for my 2 month trip in Australia and New Zealand. Seriously LOVE this backpack and all of its features.. its a very popular bag i see many other travelers use. I highly recommend it. In fact, i got 3 other friends to buy Farpoints for their Eurotrip. Also, all Osprey bags have a lifetime warranty... having piece of mind in knowing that your bag is highly reliable is worth the money! hope my feedback helps anyone else considering getting this bag.

I have the Osprey Ariel 55 xsmall which is 49 liters - small enough as carryon, but can really pack this thing up. Used it for month long trip in Peru during their winter.
Then I have Osprey Tempest 40 xsmall/small which is actually 38 liters. Did two month long Europe trip with that and had lots of room to spare.
I am a petite female and have gone through fittings several times at REI. Unfortunately, Osprey is the only brand that carries backpacks that can cinch down to my size. So I am limited but they offer good packs that work just fine for me.

I am not trying to walk on vegabrother's toes. But, a really good camera backpack is the Peakdesign 30L. My partner is a professional photographer, and he also travels with me. So he tries to find bags that he can use specific for traveling and carrying photo gear. The bag has nice large side pockets which make it really easy to load your camera gear in and out. It has zipper locks to keep from anyone seeking into your bag. It looks sleek. Just google that, you will find it. There are a lot of features I am not speaking to, but I know he spent a lot of time and have used many different brands, and really loves this specific one. I know if I add a link it will think this is spam. Good luck!

this video is the one that made me a fan of vagabrothers . I bought the Osprey Farpoint for our first international trip, but because of Amazon's weird random deals, I bought two of the 70L, since it was cheaper than the 55L at the time. We purchased the S/M and even though it is 24inches in height and most carry-on limitations top out at 22inches, we had no trouble using it as a carry-on. Sometimes, even budget airlines like RyanAir checked our bags for free as a convenience to them, which the zip up cover on the back came in really handy. I'm 5'4" and my wife is 5'0" and we had no issues or complaints using the 70L because of the support straps that come with this pack! We are now using your videos to figure out our next trip destination!!!

I love the Osprey brand. I currently use an Osprey Porter 46 for my travel bag and love it. I have a Osprey Day-lite day pack that attaches to the Porter but I'm not crazy about the way it attaches with loops and buckles, I find it difficult to attach the day pack. I like the stow-able straps on the Porter and I've never had a problem carrying it on a plane.

Great video. I can’t agree however with your recommendations. Rolling luggage that converts into a backpack is the way to go! You will find that 85% of the time you never need to carry your entire bag on your back but you’ll use the detached day bag every day. I’ve traveled the world this way and it’s so much better then carrying loads of weight on your back! The Eagle Creek Switchback International or Osprey 40L are great options.

    LUGGAGE TIPS 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Tie three or four colored ribbons around the handle to your luggage to warn others that this is not their luggage. People grab luggage at the turnstile and take it home before you ever see it.
Anywhere you put your bag, it could be grabbed in error. Example: overhead compartment, unloaded from the bus, at the hotel lobby, at the airport turnstile...
These ribbons make your luggage different and EASY TO SPOT when the piece is surrounded by 35 other cases unloaded from the bus. Using 4 ribbons make it immediately different than other cases with 1 ribbon.
Use 1” wide ribbons 14” long and not longer. Cut the ends at 45 degrees.
Tie the ribbons as a sandwich, as if they were one ribbon. Use a man’s tie, a half Windsor knot for the best look. After it is tied on, the total length of the ribbons will be about 5 inches from the handle. This is too short to catch on anything such as rollers.
Scissor cut trim the ribbons to cascading different lengths after they are tied. Put a drop of Super Glue at the end.
If each ribbon is slightly a different length by 1/4” the color layers will all show up no matter how they drape.
You can see these ribbons from 40 feet away.
Perhaps tie TWO handles or RINGS top and side of the case.
Tie using a HALF WINDSOR KNOT to the metal buckle ring of the handle.
    Learn Half Windsor knot tying:
It is the 2nd example in this video
    ruclips.net/video/X0yh5rKB9lE/видео.html
    This knot does not loosen.
Put your phone number on one ribbon using a fine point permanent Sharpie.
    Example: “Owner 454-333-7878”
    No personal name necessary.
No address necessary on the ribbon.
Choose one ribbon with an unusual pattern or fabric to really make it unique. The 4th ribbon could be black color.
Stand by the output port of the turnstile to reduce the chance of someone else grabbing your piece.
Tie your skiies, duffel bag, backpack and what ever else with matching ribbons-even your computer case.
If you are a Travel Agent, you could hot gold stamp one ribbon with your name and phone number. Send them a set of ribbons, red and blue and BLACK to your customer as a gift. Record this gift in your database so you don’t duplicate yourself.
Buy a gold hot embossing machine. Gold emboss your business name on the BLACK ribbon. Put the customer’s name on it if possible.
    Pleasant color combinations:
    Red, white and blue
    Chartreuse and purple and orange
    Orange and light blue
    Orange and yellow
    Gray and pink
    Green and yellow
    Red and Green
    Red and Gold
Light blue and light green and white
The 4th ribbon could be white, gray, black, tan
Tip #2 Take a cell phone picture of the ribbon tied on. Then another picture of the full luggage piece. You now have a way to communicate “what it looks like” if someone is tasked with searching for it. Take this picture outside in direct sun not under neon lights.
Tip #3 Place a strip of colored duct tape on the inside lining to your case. Put TWO pieces in DIFFERENT places such as INSIDE a pocket to the case. If you dare, put your phone number DIRECTLY ON THE FABRIC Liner of the case WITHOUT USING TAPE. Or, put your name and phone number on this tape. If all identity is stripped from your case, you have this to show. If someone steals it and rips off identity tags, you can show the police officer the inside tape...
To be sneaky about the tape, put your phone number on the STICKY side of the tape. Nothing is on the surface side of this tape.
    Tip #4
Put your phone number on a 2” x 1/2” piece of fabric or plastic sheet. Use colored Duct tape, such as black or red or neon, to tape this message to the top side of the handle. This message is under the tape hidden from view. The lettering does not touch the sticky part. Wrap it 2-3 times. Also include Tips 1,2,3 above. If you need to prove identity of the case, just unwrap it and show.
    Tip #5 ADDING UNIQUENESS
    4 ribbons
    1 designer ribbon
    colored taped handle
stencil SPRAY PAINT a 2 1/2” stencil letter or number or word to the suit case exterior surface in addition to using all the other ideas here.
Stencil spray paint a letter to the TOP ribbon.
Use ribbons that are wider or more narrow than 1”.
Put a travel sticker on the case.
    Tip #6 WEIGH YOUR OWN
Scales accuracy varies at different airports. If you are even 1 pound over, you pay. So, regulate yourself. Found on Ebay, buy a
    HAND HELD DIGITAL SCALE
    It is less than $15.

Two points: First I totally agree with your recommodation (???) of the Osprey. I spend in Jan-Feb 2017 several weeks in searching for the best backpack for me and at the Osprey are one million little things, which are more stable, practical, usable even dirty and so on than the other backpacks.
Second. You choose the thin, lightweight Ospry Farpoint. I decided for the heavier, more stable, more backpack Ospry porter 46. But that was for ME the correct decision, because I have to carry roundabout 25 kilo. The porter stays in form, has a big waist band and a stable back. (But if you want an additional daypack, you have to spend additional money. The Porter and Farpoint daypack are the same and can be connected to both.)

My mom and I went to Europe in 2015 and she carried a 35 L Osprey Sirrus and I opted for a 65 L Osprey Aura so I could carry some of her things in my pack since I was stronger and able to handle a fully loaded pack. Highly recommend getting the organization cubes if you go this route! We made sure to swap colors or tie strings to the handles so we knew which one had what we were looking for, without unpacking our entire bag! We were primarily on the train so we didn't need to worry about checking our bag!

Osprey makes the best bags hands down! I backpacked New Zealand with my Manta AG 36 (a backpacking backpack with a front loading zipper!!!) carrying 15 kilos of camera, camping, and other travel gear- and it fit it ALL. The reason I opt for a smaller bag is because I'm a brutally efficient packer, but I have chronic back pain, so I can't carry too much weight. But Osprey's genius design and internal frame meant I could carry all of my gear on an 8 hour hike over a mountain without pain. I've heard great things about the Farpoint, but if you need some serious support and can make your gear fit, I would strongly suggest the Manta series.

I bought the Kelty Redwing 50 reserve for my eurotrip last winter for 5 weeks and it was AMAZING. Also I bought New Outlander packable backpack (33 l, for less than $20. Since the Kelty doesn't have a removable backpack) to use during the day for my sightseeing around the cities. I think it was the best way to go, because when I wasn't using it, I stored it on one of the side pockets of my main backpack. Totally recommend that combo, the Kelty + a packable backpack.
The reserve edition of the Kelty redwing 50 does have lockable zippers for extra security.

Excellent point not selecting a technical backpack and looking for one with a hip belt and trying it on instore first. Please consider pack weight and dimensions if wou are travelling budget airlines. If security is your jam then the perfect option could be Pacsafe Venturesafe's 45Litre pack - it's my go-to for India and Asia. It's horses-for-courses - some trips my wheeler trolley is a better option. Happy & safe travels.

+Tim Ohayer The difference is that we said the Patagonia MLC isn't really for "backpacking" in the sense of budget travel and hopping on buses on a longer term trip where you have to worry about theft. It's more a backpack for air travel on a weekend trip, and security in the airport is less of an issue. Make sense?

Hey guys, love the channel and I'm not here to hate but I am willing to dispute your stance on the "technical-backcountry-camping backpack". First of all, closing the door to more options is a bad idea. Secondly and most importantly, if you're going on a trip that involves some hiking it will be infinitely more comfortable. They usually have larger hip straps and more comfortable, breathable fabrics (although that Kelty looks awesome too). Also, they may not be as sleek or have integrated organization sleeves, but the lack there of is an opportunity to organize your belongings in smaller bags (like Eagle Creek cubes) which is much more adaptable. For example, if there are four pen slots, a laptop sleeve, and a magazine slot but you don't plan on taking exactly what the bag designer had envisioned, that's wasted space and materials. Just my opinion, for what it's worth!

Use a quality duffel bag that is carry on compliant and then a daypack backpack or messenger bag for your laptop and electronics and incidentals. There are many duffels that have backpack straps and they hold much more than those "do it all backpacks".
All those bright colored do it all's make people look like tourists. You want to look like a local when traveling. Local thieves always rob the tourists and scam the tourists. Duffel bags are classy, though, and hold a lot. And won't get damaged if you get forced to check your bag. You should never carry your passport, wallet, money, or phone in your bag. These things should be on your person.

You make good points. The problem with a duffel is that it carries like a duffel- a big floppy sack with straps added as an afterthought. That's OK if you never have to carry it too far...my bag is an Osprey 46 "travel duffel". It is more of a pack than a duffel, though, with a firm back suspension and a waistband. But not a true backpack suspension like the Osprey Farpoint and the Redwings. Those eat up too much space inside. I think it is a good compromise. I wouldn't want to hike the Appalachian Trail with my Porter, I have a real backpack for that. But I can haul it around pretty good all day and it has has a lot of open, accessible space with just enough organization in a carryon size. BTW the Farpoint is only legally carryon size (when fully packed) if you detach the day pack and use it as a "personal item". But fewer and fewer airlines allow two carryon items...I use a vertical satchel type of bag. It is easy to put the backpack on over it, and it is always in front visible and reachable. I pack a small folding daypack inside to supplement it for bigger items on day trips.

You guys just reminded me, that I have a backpack suitcase. It has two pockets on each side and pocket in the back. A place to store an iPad or magazines. Pockets in the inside. Two wheels and it also has a handle that I can pull up or down. Oh, and strap to go around my waist. Cost $15.00. 👍

I ended up getting the Osprey 40 because the 55 may not be accepted as a carry on everywhere. I matched this with a small PacSafe sling which works great for me. The Osprey carries everything while moving around and the sling is great for exploring towns and carrying essentials.

I'm using a 28L backpack (the Räven 28 from Fjällräven), I can fit ~4-5 days worth of clothes + some extra stuff (like socks, undergarments, razors, and masks) into a couple packing cubes in the main compartment and my 13-inch computer. The front compartment's used for other things (like shampoo + body bars, my liquids bag, and a universal charger for Europe & the US). Although it's TINY compared to the usual travel backpacks that are mentioned in every travel video, it's the best backpack for me. A tiny backpack for a tiny human!

For longer-term travel like WWOOFing I love the North Face Base Camp duffles. They don't have as many pockets and storage options, but you can fit so much and still carry it on your back! I then use pack-it cubes from Eagle Creek to organize. With this system I can unpack and set up a space of my own instead of living out of my bag.

I just came back from a month in Asia (Specifically Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Japan. I used the PacSafe Venturesafe 55L. Its sleek, has locking zippers, exo-mesh lined fabric (so nobody can slash your bag, and super comfortable and breathable. I felt safe carrying my passport and electronics in it. It was front loading and I used eagle creek packing cubes. I am planning another trip to Australia and then China and recommend the PacSafe and 100% going to use it on every trip I go on. I could most definitely see myself traveling with this bag for extended trips again.

Used my Patagonia MLC for a trip to Paris. Packed all of mine and my wife's clothes in the bag for a week stay along with a full size manfroto tripod and her makeup bag. The straps got uncomfortable after standing in customs line for 45 minutes, but all-in-all a great bag. Now that we have a kid I'm either going to get another Patagonia or the Tortuga Setout.

I have the Osprey Farpoint in 40 liters and I pack my Matador Freerain 24 which I use as my day pack. I just came back from a month long trip to Europe and another month long trip to Mexico back in May, 2018 and this combination has worked very well for me. I will hopefully never have to check in my bags now that I started traveling with carry on only. Osprey Farpoint is a great bag!

Travelling carry-on only eith my MEI Voyageur for over 10 years. I find it much less restricting and so much easier to pack than the Osprey Farpoint 40. The MEI is sturdy, of excellent quality. I use packing cubes to be able to pack in it neatly. Also, they are made in the USA, and MEI’s customer service is second to none!

I bought a Blackwolf Cuba 65L before I went to the Philippines last month. IT is too big to carry on but is the perfect size for me with a good attachable daypack. I have made do with a 40 and 55L bag before but find that 65L gives me just enough extra space for things I will inevitably buy during my travels. I went into a store to try out all the backpacks then bought mine online at a much cheaper price.

I second going to a store to buy. Most quality outdoor stores (REI, Sports Basement, etc) will do a backpack fitting with you and will adjust all the straps to ensure it's sitting on you in the most comfortable way. Will make your trip that much more comfortable!

I have the Osprey Farpoint 40, Its perfect for SE Asia, for all the reasons you said and more! (Just a note - the 40 litre doesn't have a removable day bag so the laptop ends up being the furthest distance from your back. This isn't an issue for me with a light laptop but for anyone with heavier tech the 40 might not be for you as the weight isn't evenly distributed!) Thanks Vagabrothers - your how to travel series is so useful!

My go to pack is the Kelty in 32L. It may be smaller but with a few packing cubes i was able to spend a few months in Europe in the dead of winter with room to spare. The top and side pockets are really quite large so you can fit things like a smaller Nalgene or sleeping pad if you so choose. External compression straps are nice too when you visit the nieces and nephew for Christmas and they send you off with extra presents =)

Ha! I was just in Pasadena today at a travel store called "Distant Lands". I think you guys would dig that store a lot. There the sales rep was showing me the Osprey in this video. Does that mean this is destiny? Maybe I should go back and get it. hahaha. They had another set of bags called the Briggs & Riley BRX series. You can also zip the backpack onto the carry-on if you want. It was pretty cool. The padding, compression straps, lockable zippers and front loading system made them really attractive to me. So does their very liberal lifetime warranty. Basically if anything happens to it, they will fix it. Pretty cool. The cons were that they were only water resistant and the price was a bit steep.

I have the Eagle Creek Rincon Vita 65L (45L main, 20L day bag) that i used for two 2 week trips a few years ago and plan on using it again soon for another 2 week trip. I really like it and i hope now that i am better at packing less, it won't be so full this time! One complaint i have is that because of the suspension system, the bag weighs about 5lbs on its own and obviously carry on bags can only be so much. So it will be interesting keeping it under the limit! At least being able to separate the day bag means i can put heavier items in there.
