Several songs on that album speak of the horrors of war and I would dare guess Vietnam being on their minds while writing these songs. IMHO, Metallica are the pioneers of this genre of music. They are masters of changing the tempo and arrangements mid song.

"One" is one of the best anti-war songs ever. It is not a simple musical composition of a simple riff of two or three chords. It begins with a light guitar introduction by accelerating the rhythm wit a destructive rhythm section ( Lars, Jason ) of the virtuoso Kirk's solo at the end all accompanied by a powerful James's voice, it is a masterpiece !

Yes, it was mimic for gunshot. You are the first one reactor who got it :) Congrats! This song is masterpiece, every part of song is symbolism for emotions and it´s not just music. Some parts symbols morse - in top coment here from Roh Echt is why.

If you had seen the official video, I guarantee you would have burst into tears.
Likely not. A lot of the people that watch the music video say that it's hard to tell what's going on the video. If you dont know the context and story, it's hard to understand why it is cut together the way it is.
The original viedeo makes you from goosbumps til crying this is a real Masterpeace must watch it

It is the darkest side of war, and what it can do. A poor soldier, wounded, lost both his arms, both his legs, and all his senses, sight, hearing, and touch. He is trapped within his own mind with no way to communicate to others, or have others communicate with him, a prisoner trapped in his own thoughts and nightmares.

You are more perceptive than a LOT of people. Yep....the drums and the guitar, that was supposed to be the sound of machine gun fire. It might not be looked at as an accurate portrayal, but it’s flawless as an artistic expression. It starts out as a military march, but then morphs into exactly what you heard - machine gun fire. Some people (myself included) took it as an excuse to “bang our heads” and didn’t see or feel that transition.

This is a great review, now you should watch the official video.
It’s based on a book. But the singers lyrics in the early days always related with stuff with loss. His mother passed away from cancer early and his father wasn’t in the picture. He also moved around a lot, so when he would come back to one place where he used to live, everything was thrown away. He just felt like nothing. He talk about more now in interviews. Really cool guy. And he made a tragedy in his life into something great.

"Hold my breath as I wish for death" - I think it's the representation of how emotional it is for him to wish for death, so he holds his breath as he wishes for it.
I doubt if people realize that when you're put on "life support" in alot of cases have to go to court to have them turned off, not to mention family that have to make those decisions & often fighting about it; also the costs of med bills, court/attorneys fees eating up any life insurance.

Disagree. The video makes it a muddy mess and every one who experiences one for the first time through the video completely misses the point in amongst all the distracting circus tents and dialog.

Imagine being completely immobilized and unable to hear or speak and wanting to die, but when you hold your breath, you just pass out and start breathing again involuntarily. It's a dark and all to painful reality. It's called "heavy" metal for a reason. Metallica sings about a lot of heavy subjects, and they put that same passion and depth into their musical compositions. The video version of this song is even more emotionally powerful.

You're right when you said you need to see it live. Metallica did an album called S&M. Symphony and metallica. It was a lkve album and it was also recorded so you can watch the concert. Just imagine if you will, the artistry of metallica and the artistry of an orchestra being woven together that one can't be separated from another. It's an excellent album/concert.
