  • In this video we are going to LearnHow to backup iPhone Directly to External Drive. It is very helpful when you are in low disk space or you do not want to block your Macs just to store iPhone Backup.
First you have to plug in your External Drive and Create a Folder name Backup ( It should B in Capital Letter)
Then Go to Folder and type ~/Library find Application Folder and MobileSync Folder ( MobileSync folder is the defaults Location for iOS Backup). Then Delete or Move Backup folder
Next Open terminal and Type Following command
ln -s (Drag destination Backup Folder from external drive) (again drag defaults MobileSync folder) and hit return
    That's All

Not only was this awesome, but the music was a peaceful departure from the stress of a full hard drive. Thanks so much :D

Hi Great video first of all, followed the guide exactly, but when backing up my phone is still writing the backup to my Mac internal drive rather than the destination (external NAS) no errors in the terminal command, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi thank you very much for this video and tutorial. I followed your instructions but forgot to delete the Backup folder on my Mac. when I made a backup it went to my Mac and not the external drive, is it safe to delete the folder now and do I need to enter the instructions in Terminal again? thank you for your help, please advice

You can delete from default location and follow the process again. Good luck

Hi, I'm using Sonoma 14.2.1 on a Mac Mini and have followed this process but always get "Operation not permitted" in the shell. I wondered if it needed superuser privileges but that made no difference. I saw that the Mobilesync directory had drwxr-xr-x permissions so added w permissions for all groups. It still didn't work. I'm trying to understand why the operation isn't permitted? Here's the command and response "Davids-Mac-mini:~ root# ln -s /Volumes/Mac_Mini_Extra/Backup /Users/david/Library/Application\ Support/MobileSync
ln: /Users/david/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup: Operation not permitted" Is there anything you could suggest?

I have tried this on Sonoma 14.2.1 and have tried the symbolic link from a terminal as suggested. I always get "Operation not Permitted". I have tried with superuser enabled. I noticed the permissions for Mobilesync directory were drwxr-xr-x so I added w permission for all users for that directory, even though my user is the owner and administrator. Nothing seems to allow me to create the symbolic link. The command is correct, I think: Davids-Mac-mini:~ root# ln -s /Volumes/Mac_Mini_Extra/Backup /Users/david/Library/Application\ Support/MobileSync
ln: /Users/david/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup: Operation not permitted
