Just finished this lift. Replaced all bushings with poly, painted areas before install, took my time. Took me 12 hours over two days due to extra items I wanted done. Prior experience TIPS...1st. Use plenty of penetrating spray in advance. 2nd. The rear shock bolts will break, be prepared for this (regardless of where XJ is from, poor design from manufacturer). 3rd. Replace all ol bolts etc. do not reuse worn items. 4th. Follow directions and allow plenty of time. 5th. Dont panic when 3"lift is 6" higher (they will settle and remember your old parts were worn out and sagging). 6th. If using hand tools as I did, your hands will really hurt! Pneumatic is a blessing, wear gloves. 7th. Double check everything, plan for transfer case drop as well as an alignment. 8th. Get coil spring compressor (you can 'rent') from most auto stores. 9th. Don't undertake if you need the car for work the next day (learned this many hears ago). 10th. Final, and most important, stay hydrated with your favorite cold beverage! The right beverage can help the process along. Remember safety and be patient. ENJOY!
you're pretty slow, this guy only took 6 minutes.. :)
***** AZ DONALD ZenithRadio This install should take about 3 to 4 hours. We made it 6 minutes using the magic of "Hollywood."
5:36 guy hit head lmao
I love how these videos make it looks so easy! It took me and a friend almost 8 hours to put a 4.5" lift in my XJ. That was in a garage, on a lift, with a torch, and every tool possible. I think suspension kits should come with easy out bits. I must have broke at least four bolts trying to back them out. However, in the end, it was worth it!
Great video, very helpful but definitely shows the best case scenario. Unfortunately in my case many bolts were just determined to not come off, specially the front bolt on the leaf springs, they were seized to the spring bushing sleeve. I ended up having to install the add a leaf with the leaf springs on the vehicle.
A few tips,
1. if those leaf spring bolts dont want to come off, leave them be. it is easier to install the add a leaf with the springs on, than fighting those damn bolts.
2. when you remove the LCA the front axle will shift backwards 1"-2" and you wont be able to get the bolt in. with the jack stand holding the "frame" just behind the LCA mount i was able to use a 4x4 piece of wood as a spacer and a bottle jack horizontally to push off the jack stand and move the axle forward until i could get the bolt in.
3. in the front i had to undo the sway bar, track bar axle bolt and the tie rod ends on the knuckles. it was a major pain to get the trac bar bolt back in. had to tie a ratchet strap from the driver side frame to the axle pass side to get the axle to move laterally and get the bolt back in.
4. a spring compressor makes life a lot easier. even with the spring compressor its a balancing act of jacking up one side of the axle so the opposite side drops, be careful with the brake lines. the first side i did was ok, but the second side i had to remove the caliper to get the axle to drop down farther.
5. i installed the bump stop extension that mounts on the front axle (not included with the kit). after removing the stock spring, i drilled a hole at the center of the spring put in the extension block and cranked down the self tapping bolt. then removed it, installed the new lift spring and slipped the bump stop inside the spring before pushing the bottom end of the spring on. then i was able to drive in that bolt with a socket, extension and ratchet wrench through the spring. it would have been very difficult to compress the spring enough to clear the top bump stop and the bottom bump stop.
As a somewhat experienced lift kit installer im sad to say this 1990 XJ fought me for 7 hours!
Just put the front half of this lift on yesterday. Granted my dad has been a mechanic since he was my age, workin outside on a concrete driveway with no spring compressors and fighting the heck outta the left LCA we were done in about 2 hours. Looks like its gonna be a beauty already. Installing the add-a-leaf and rear shocks today and can't wait to get her on the road. Great kit so far and prayin it stays that way
I installed my R/C 3" lift kit about 3 months ago and i was able to clear my BFG A/T 32x11.5 tires,I'm liking it so far handles great on and off road...the whole installation took me about 4 hours
Installation complete. You can leave the rear leaf springs in, just disconnect them in the front. Also, loosen both the rear shackle/spring bolts/nuts. Take out all but the one still connected leaves, assemble them with the center bolt, and then from the rear slide them in.
On the front:you really need to disconnect the track bar and steering bar, both of these will limit down travel and make it difficult to install the new & longer springs. Springs go in without compressors this way.
best vid I've seen yet as to installing Lift kits
I've had this lift on my cherokee for a couple of years. Its a good lift. Got me through some spots that would make my undercarriage drag when it was stock. I'm ready to upgrade though to a 6 inch lift lol.
Nice Kit took my friend and I a little over 9 hours to install in my daughters XJ every bolt fought us tooth and nail! jeep looks bad ass now
You can submit photos/video of it to photos@roughcountry.com. Be sure to include year, make, model, wheels/tires, lift height, and location. We’d love to see it and may even feature it on our social networks and/or website.
Wow clean looking jeep!
i just installed this today took 7 hours to the tee the lower control arms sucked but so worth the money and a couple busted knuckels need a transfer case drop bracket cause i have vibes but all in all it is awsome to sit higher so thanks guys
Love the Kit. I didn't do the add a Leaf i ordered the 3" Lift Leaf Springs. I figured that would be best. Just purchased it 2weeks ago. Finished the Rear but can't do the Front b/c of a Broken Right hand. Shops around me are charging $500 or more to do the front. And that's Labor alone. I have all the parts. I will be working on it next week with a Broken Hand. Don't know how but it has to get done.
yep. Rent a spring compressor from autozone
On the 3" there is no need to redrill teh track bar. Usually you only relocate the track bar if you make a change to the drag link.
I just installed a lift kit on a jeep Cherokee XJ. Wanna see my version? Come look!
I installed the 3" lift, my kit had the complete leaf spring, I installed everything, it went relatively smooth. One problem the front is higher than the back, what can I do about that.
Just started on mine. A bit slow go on my deal. First...working outside in the cold (no choice) and I do have a broken bolt at the rear shock top mount position. I also don't have all the fancy fast tools (I do have a lot of tools though). I'll post a video myself once complete.
@murdock12186 i had the same problems i also had to replace the trac bar cuz of death wobble. the total lift took me 3 weekends from start to finish.
So I was wondering where I could get these sway bar drop brackets. I don't know if it's just me, but I can't seem to find them anywhere.
could you add the leaf with the leaf springs still in the jeep?
My question with this kid is do I need to add an adjustable track bar and brake line extensions?
@thomasmovesinc I'm looking at a 4.5 inch kit for about 800 bucks on their website...I think I calculated it to be 2200 for wheels, tires, lift, sye, and cv driveshaft
nice vid man, i have a xj and want up to 3 inch :P
Do you need a lift or can I do this with the vehicle on jack stands?
Yesterday I installed the 3" kit with new leaf springs and longer lower control arms. I love it!! The only problem I've come across so far is a front end noise that is a mix between a grind and a hum when I let off the gas doing interstate speeds (around 70mph). It also does it when I shift into neutral and coast on the interstate, but it doesn't do it while driving around town (speeds below 50mph or so). Anyone else have this problem or a solution?
Good job very informative and well explained. You should teach the idiots on 4X4TV. They tried the same thing but it took 9 videos to show the same. Once again good job.
I have my second rc lift going in next week on my new project, so this week I'm soaking the xj in WD40..i got your full leafs though, looking forwards to it.
+deadkemper 4 hours ! rear leaf bolts were a bastard even with heat and the rear shock bolts all broke (ofc). Also RC your instructions are terrible, considering the price we pay for your products you could make better ones, your biggest let down.
+deadkemper Did you really need instructions to put a simple lift kit in plus the video that clearly shows what to do? Perhaps you should have had your wife do it for you...
whoa slow down billy the fucking kid ..I've done 2 r/C lifts, I'm pointing out to the folks out there who might not have done one before and not obvious mechanical genius's like yourself and winning the award of "Biggest head mechanic award 2015" ....gratz on that one.
deadkemper So.. You're saying you didn't actually have a problem with the products but others might.. Then you say they are the biggest let down? They have a phone number, online support, and tons of video's online to help others out with products.
Yes I AM saying that...if you are shit deep under a jeep wherever in hickville with no internet..The last thing you want is shit
instructions...
The instructions that come with RC lifts suck it's a fact ..I'm just encouraging them to make an effort as it might help people in the future, that's all...No conspiracy.....keep jeepin.
@RoughCountryTV on this vehicle did you drop the transfer case? because the newer (1997+) cherokees have worse vibrations then older Cherokees when they are lifted. Also did you eventually relocate the track bar? im VERY close to buying this lift and i wanna make sure i dont run into any hidden problems, thanks!
I didn't take the springs out of the back, just took the ubolts and center bolt out, then used the weight of the vehicle to compress the springs back together.
did those shackles in the rear with the leafs give you more lift than just the AAL?
Is there any need to change the pitman arm? Also does this come with neoprene bushings?
i also wanted to know i put the leafs together i have alittle gap in the leaf is this ok
Easy time I see an XJ been pimped I felt so pretty bad for I have an XJ but here in Nigeria we can't get spare parts and my XJ is just dying gradually
If I put 2 4.5 in lift blocks in the front on my jeep and 2 3.5 on the back would I have to change anything else I wanna put so 33s on it
have any tips on how to get the upper shock bolts out if they break?tried drilling wont come outeven heated the lil Bastard up cherry red
would lifts on a Jeep XJ mean i dont need an alignment after i installed the lift since its a solid axle?
About 6-7 hours if you know what you're doing and don't break any bolts, just put mine in this weekend. took me around 10-12 hours
@roughcountrytv Wouldn't lifting the vehicle effectively change the drag link angle?
Question. what exactly is the point of a lift when your transfer cases and drive axles hang just as low as they did to start with, unless you put larger wheels on it which still doesn't add that much lift to prevent a boulder from smackin your cases?
I don't know the pinion angle. when I ordered the kit I was told I it wouldn't affect the drive . stock stabilizer
do you guys sell just those controls and track bar drop brackets?
i looked for the kit on jc whitney and found the three inch kit, but it says it doesnt include shocks or the control arms? and the add a leaf is about a foot long. are there different stages of this kit?
Hello friends, parabens service at the highest level, sorry for my English I am from Brazil, would like to know more about suspension kit for my Cherokee Sport 98 - would like to put a kit 3 "or more that could use tires 33" will use more to ride, but want a vehicle to draw attention.
Since ja grateful.
how well will the shocks perform on the road
do i need to worrie about the death wobble if i install this lift kit on my jeep the same way you did? im still debating between this lift and rustys offroad verison
what size/type of tires were on the jeep at the end?
Ok so I'm 16, and new to this whole thing but I have a 2000 Cherokee Sport that I want to put this lift on. Do they give me everything I need (as in parts)??? I read that when you go higher than 2.5" you have to get trac bar relocations and other stuff...do I? Sorry if this is a stupid question lol
what about the trac bar? did you redrill or leave it in stock location?
@RoughCountryTV by the way, with stock 3.55 gears will i be fine with 31's? did you guys use 31's on this jeep? how is power affected?
I bought the kit without control arms and ive disconnected everything you guys have minus the control arms and i cannot get my new springs in on the front. i got the old ones out just fine but the new springs will not go in whats my problem here??
do i do the same thing with the 3 inch lift thats $255 expect without the control arm?
how much fender rub did u have with the 3inch lift with the 31
6 mins to show us what to do.. but 6-8hrs to do the install. that is as long as you have all the tools and your rear shock bolts dont sheer off like they are made of toffee.
Regardless once it is installed it makes for a great ride and looks awesome.
Perhaps Rough Country could also do some in case stuff breaks videos
is this the lift with the control arms? or the entry level lift
do you only do jeeps? because i would like to get one for my 1992 ford f350 dually its a diesel 7.3L do you make kits for that truck
I feel it under the driver seat maybe a little behind it. and once I hit about 50 meh and let off the gas there's some kind of grinding noise. and when I get back on the gas there's a thumping noise as if something hits. thank you for replying
+Hugo Yanez Do you know what your pinion angle is? Are you running a stabilizer and adjustable track bar?
Rough country thank you for replying! I ordered you transfer case lowering kit. Solved the problem. Recommend this kit from rough country to anyone !!
So how long did this take in real time??
@jeepcherokee40 you can yes, but for the sake of filming it was better to install it on the workbench.
6 min?? not even with the magic cap, I personally installed this kit in my XJ last weekend and took me about 12 hours to get it properly done, there is absolutely no way you can put the new springs without strut compressors, the bolts on the control arms and the leaf springs you see in this video been taken out easily will be challenging to take out, every one of them will fight you will need WD40 and long breaker bars, and be prepared to hit your knuckles, many times so use gloves and be safe.
This install should take about 3 to 4 hours. We made it 6 minutes using the magic of "Hollywood."
Lol yeah ok
Front end alignment? Not needed?
Hi I have a bad drive shaft vibration. I even had the ujoints changed and 1 inch tc drop install still vibrating. It’s only a 3 inch lift
Has the vehicle been aligned since installing the kit?
I can't wait until I get some money after college and get a 4.5 (maybe a 6.5) lift from RC
sway bar 3/4 off center?
ok so i can get this and keep my 31x10.50R15 tires?
Did you over torque? That can be an issue. If not call rc or try some white lithium grease
I'm thinking the trick to the rear upper shock bolts is prep and tools you use. If you don't spray them bad boys with PB for a week before and use hand tooll with a 3" breaker bar you're going to shear those bolts. What ya need is impact socket and impact gun turned low after you sprayed the crap outta them for a week. The impact action loosens the bolt easier and doesn't stress it as much as 150ft lbs of torque with a breaker bar. Right tools people!
You have vibes with only a 3" lift?
@jeepcherokee40 you can yes, but for the sake of filming it was better to do it on the workbench.
OK LISTEN UP EVERYBODY, I ordered this lift from just jeeps of course they fucked up the order and forgot to send my add a leafs but that's beside the point they fixed that today. If you are scared about your front leaf spring bolts. USE 50/50 ATF AND ACETONE AND PENETRATE THE POOP OUT OF THEM. It's godly DAD and there is a hole just under the front leaf spring bolts spray the back of the bolt with atf and acetone and she will fly out of that hole.
Any idea what size wheels and tires are used in the after pics?
The additional spring sheet must be longer so that the main sheet overlaps in length. Otherwise, the spring will be very weak.
If this isnt a good lift to buy, what would be a good lift that is still affordably? I dont have $1500 to drop on a 3 inch lift.
How can I remove the upper bolt from the lead spring? I've managed to remove the one bolted to the body but the one near the tank gas just won't give! Anybody got any suggestions?
+Arturo Gonzalez PB Blaster or some type of lubricant. Sounds like it may just be seized up.
Is this pretty do-able for an average joe and in one weekend?
Yes this a very do-able install for an average joe/novice to do in the drive way with some basic tools and jack stands.
I love Cherokees, but they are a pain in the ass: you have to lift them to get 31s on them, when both my Ford and my Chevy are stock and have 33s!
What about brake lines?
really stupid question whats the diff between a long arm lift kit and a add-a-leaf lift kit
No torque specs?
I just installed ruff country 3 inch lift on 3/2/2016. I'm getting so much noise and vibration from my jeep now! please help this is my daily driver!!!
+Hugo Yanez Where is the vibration and noise coming from?
+Rough Country 50 mph
Need to have it balanced and yes Tcase will help as well...but I bet it's the balancing part that you're feeling. If you did have that done after lift then Tcase should clean you up.
Chris Walters thank you
Will this kit fit my 89' Comanche?
Zak Allbright This kit is not for the Comanche, however, we do have a few to select from for the Comanche at the following link.
www.roughcountry.com/suspension-lift-kits/jeep-suspension-lift-kits.html?vehicle_model=305
TUV ?
how much
how much?
Fit bigger tires, looks cool, more clearance in areas, to piss you off
wish i would have done this in the first place...
ahh i see. p.s. i meant differentials not transfer cases. thanks
does the 3" kit fit on the 2wd xj?
Mitch Ta why would yo lift a 2wd XJ? Slam it and make go fast
@@josephmurphy6678 hey Im thinking of lifting my 2wd xj mainly cause of the looks and cause of my worn out suspension. There’s nothing wrong with that.
I have saim thes Lift keet

U.A.E
Your not supposed to use regular sockets with an impact wrench.
cuidado, te puedes pegar.. 5:37
Why you guys gotta make it look so easy??
Compress them.
Lol the 3 kit gave that XJ balls...
6 mins hahaha.. more like 8 hours if you know a xj you will need spring compressors for front in renix years and track bar and steering will need to be droped to allow axle to fall far enough for new coils even with compressors beware of any xj rear shock bolts on top normally break mine didnt and pb is your friend use it for a few days before you attempt any work..
This install should take about 3 to 4 hours. We made it 6 minutes using Hollywood magic.
6min my ass 😂 i hope you mean 6h with new hardware and 3 buddies and cold beer to prevent dents and war wounds.. without a hydraulic lift you'll need a spring compressor.. 6min 😂
The video is 6 minutes long and it is an overview video.......not the install time for the kit. SMH. This is a 3-4 hour install.
@4eyedsteve How about you grab a buddy and just tell him what to do?
Buy him dinner to make up for it....
wow only 6 min to install a lift. thats amazing. (i feel bad for the sorry sob who falls for that bullshit)
6 minutes & 36 seconds to be exact! This is an overview video showing a rundown of the install. The install itself takes 3-4 hours and the kit comes with step by step install instructions.
@@RoughCountryTV Yeah I have installed this kit like 3 times and I got it done in about 4 hours once and it was a miracle because the xj was in ridiculous good condition. Chances of you working on a 90s xj and not having rust issues is one in a hundred thousand . I get saying 3-4 hours might help you sell more, and mentioning youre only 6 min into the video might mislead some people into thinking this is an easy upgrade, but the reality is your average Joe is looking at more like 5-8 hours dealing with rusted bolts and drilling out snapped bolts and not having proper equipment. Maybe more. And you know it. Haha
So the lift not only raises your jeep, it also widens the stance as well ??? Wow I hope that has nothing to do with your "Hollywood magic"
lol. Nope. No "Hollywood Magic" on the stance. Just a little bit wider wheel and tire.
6 minutes...Go home Rough Country you're drunk.
