The first time I heard the term "Gentrification" was in John Singleton's classic Boyz N The Hood. Not sure if you heard of the tragic Grenfell Tower fire that happened in London many years ago. That was a consequence of that. This looks like a brilliant film. Sundance complety passed me by this year. Thank you for highlighting this on your excellent channel. Terrific review good sir.

Hey, Terence! That's a really great cinematic example where the term comes into play.
I actually follow some historical disaster channels, and I remember seeing a thumbnail that mentioned the Grenfell Tower. I'll have to go back and watch now.
I really hope this continues to garner more attention after its release. Thanks so much for all the support and kind words, my friend! 👏👏👏

Me too! I heard the term 1st in Boyz in the Hood, but being from a city, I’ve seen urban evolution since the 80’s just didn’t know that there was an actual term for what was going on.

Gentrification is a word I did not know about or the fact Tiana Taylor was on ‘My Sweet 16’ I did watch some episodes of that show back in the day! 😂
Thanks for the history upskill Mr. Movieman!
Knowing this movie was a surprise to you, this sounds like an absolute treat. I hope this gets a U.K. release and if so, I’ll be there day one.
Always enjoy hearing your thoughts, D. You never fail to deliver an absolute delight of a review 🙂

Hey, Mike! I figured I'd slide that in there since not everyone is familiar with the term or experience.
Definitely a surprise for me, and very heartfelt! I'd be intrigued to see what you think of this one.
Always appreciate the kind words of support, my friend! 🙏🙏🙏

Hey, Lovlee! It's all good. Besides, I know it's always better to go in without any other thoughts or expectations but your own. So, that's totally okay.
I'm so glad that you appreciated the transparency. It was a challenge, because that is a very sensitive subject for me. But I thought it was very important to tap into that.
Listen, emotions don't come easily for me. So if someone can bring that out, then they've really done their job! Can't wait to check out your livestream. 👏👏👏

Living in NY in the 90's I gotta say this movie was very authentic. And that's damn sure what I think when I hear Gary Indiana, is THE JACKSONS!! lol Dope introspective review for this masterpiece of a film that gets better the more I meditate on it....and as u knw my intro to Teyana was "Byronnnnnnnnn....nnnnnnnn" 🤣🤣🤣

Hey, Rashad! Most definitely! It's actually cool hearing from someone who had the genuine New York experience, and can see the authenticity of it.
Listen, The Jacksons are forever!!! Gary will always be a part of history for that alone. 👏👏👏
I can only imagine what Teyana thinks whenever clips of that scene resurface.....secondhand embarassment or nah? Appreciate you tuning in and supporting, man! 👌👌👌

Wow, D! I always enjoy your videos, but this one goes beyond simple enjoyment. This was very moving. I loved seeing the old photos and lil D with his graduation cap and gown on! I happened to watch a RUclips video about Gary a few years ago, which covered some of the topics you mentioned here, such as the decline in the steel industry and the devastating effects on the city. To hear your personal side of this story and how you connected to the movie through these emotional experiences was fascinating. Similar things happened here in Wales with the steel and coal industries. Towns were ruined, communities displaced and this caused a lot of poverty. I am looking forward to seeing this film. To be recognised with The Grand Jury Prize for US Drama on your debut feature is an amazing achievement. This one sounds great. Excellent job dude. Greg.

I had to really push myself with this one. If I'm being honest, I was doing a lot of second-guessing regarding whether I should dive that deep or not.
That's so ironic to hear that you were already familiar with Gary and the history behind it. How timely!
I remember watching the Crown and being so shocked by the historical details regarding Wales and Welsh. An eye-opener for sure.
I'm so excited for A.V. Rockwell, and I can only imagine what's next for her. I'm always grateful for the encouraging words, but it means even more on this review. Thanks so much, Greg! 🙏🙏🙏

I saw this coming out this week but, hadn’t seen a trailer. It’s in limited theaters around me so I’ll have to make a little bit of drive to check it out but, sounds worth it to check out at a theater.

Hey, Ryan! It might not be a bad idea to go in not knowing anything and without expectations.
I'm hoping they'll be doing a bigger rollout for the theaters very soon, but it was definitely worth the experience for me. 🙏🙏🙏

Great review as always D. I hadn’t heard of this one at all. Gentrification became a household world after a situation in the UK with a block of flats called Grenfell Tower. It’s a horrid story but I’ll always associate it with that word.

Hey, Lisa! Thanks for tuning and sharing your thoughts. Yes, Greg from More Movies mentioned that in the comments as well.
I remembered seeing Grenfell Tower on a thumbnail for a channel I follow called Dark History.
I'll have to circle back and watch to learn more, although I know it'll be a tough one to sit through.

Great review!!! Wow I did not know that about Tiana. Glad I didn't see that show because I cannot stand that whole concept and the trailors! I like movies that have a rawness to it and to where it can be relatable.

Yes! It's definitely not a show I would have the patience for as an adult, but in high school? Right on target.
It was fairly interesting seeing how awful some of these kids behaved, and then how over the top some of these parties were.
But Teyana was definitely a breath of fresh air in that regard. She really delivered in this film! 🙏🙏🙏

Clearly you didn’t grow up listening to rap because almost all rappers have been repping when they were from since hiphop first started, Biggie wasn’t the first.

At 3:53, he CLEARLY states the following:
"I even remember how, even though I DIDN'T GROW UP LISTENING TO RAP NECESSARILY, I do remember the Notorious B.I.G. being the FIRST ARTIST THAT I HEARD referencing their home and just kind of showing love, reverence, and appreciation."
Listen to understand, rather than listening to respond and argue.
