I'll second that Elizabeth. Any issues like this should be highlighted and hopefully something will be done to improve the situation for farmers.
I've said before that the farmer takes all the risk for little reward.
Andrew, perhaps interviews like this should be aired on the real country file too and anyone else's channel that would like to highlight other people's views?
I sure each channel that airs will reach some that won't see it elsewhere.

Thank you Andrew, totally agree with your rant. In our corner of the UK, I've completed the gov. soil sampling. I have spent many many years via the same accredited gov. approved sampling, to improve soil health to little effect. The gov. are investing some £45 million in soil sampling. My results are now mostly above recommendation via the new gov. scheme, even though we are exporting a lot of nutrient off farm, and applying less nutrient per ha. on farm. Does not make sense!!!
Inflation, as eroded the value of gov. support.
Gov. red tape is becoming to costly verses return from gov. And we are having to reach net zero by 2050. My neighbouring country only needs to reach carbon neutral by 2050 (massive difference). Firstly there needs to be ONE accredited carbon calculator that all countries reference too. Plus the growing crops, forages, vegetables, hedges and trees are not included in our farm carbon calculation, that needs to be addressed.
Totally agree with the dairy farmer, we are all farming around the cost of production. Gov. have aloud the supermarket model to keep food cheap. And when a person pays, that money leaves the area.

Thanks Andrew, it’s been a while since I’ve commented. The sewage sludge firstly has been a great success. We got about 2,000 tonnes in the end. On SFI rates I suspect the present government are hoping private finance markets are going write the cheque. I know how that ends coming from a near 20 year career as an investment banker. We are dairy farmers also. In addition to cost of living the other great excuse used is “look at the futures market”. The futures market is less than 1/400 in notional terms relative to annual EU physical milk production, but yet apparently that’s the efficient market! Cheers, Tim

Sadly not surprised that DEFRA aren't listening. The wider agricultural community all are saying food security is paramount and with the complexity of the new scheme few are taking it up. Harry's Farm last week was saying large areas of the Cotswolds may not grow food next year as they have had a terrible time with OSR. They argue its easier to accepts ELMS payments than continue to loose money. I wonder if Mark Spencer has to tow the party line, with a framing background I would have hoped he would push for a better scheme.

It’s difficult to comment fully without knowing all the facts could be a few reasons for fallow fields. One could be he thought it was too late to plant spring crops because the soil was too wet, another is, it’s bad for a Blackgrass and he’s cleaning them up before planting crops again next year , or it could be going into solar?

Example your comments about DEFRA not paying sufficient to make it worthwhile for farmers to get involved. Milk and Muller screwing the farmers could be another.
