I love both. F1 gives you a real appreciation for racing tech, and there are marked similarities between it and Indy road/street courses. Indy gives you a great appreciation for driving dynamics and psychology. You'll notice more about how the F1 drivers manage their machines from watching Indy, and you'll notice more about how the spec of the Indy series affects choices drivers and teams make from watching F1. They compliment one another fantastically.
Welcome to the club. You will enjoy IndyCar racing. I have been watching it since '99. I was torn between switching the TV between the IRL, and CART races when they ran on the same weekends. Make sure you head to the IndyCar RUclips channel also. That way you can catch a few races from the past. Definitely watch the 94' and 95' Michigan 500 races.
This video is amazing. Mega job in explaining to F1 fans who haven't watch IndyCar before. Wishing you a million subs soon. You deserve much more than 1k subs..
As a strictly F1 only fan ever since I was 4 and saw Seb win in 2010, I'm happy I decided to break that bubble and venture into Indycar. It's almost surprised just how different these two series are at the very top of motorsport.

As an Indianapolis native, I’ve always loved Indy racing. My family reunion every year is for the 500 and it’s always an electric race. Glad to see so many F1 fans willing to give Indy a try. You won’t be disappointed
We definitely weren't disappointed and what a great family tradition to have! Hope you have another amazing time at this year's race and hope for another classic!
Small thing you forgot: Qualyfying in normal tracks have a different start/finish line. It is placed a bit before the pit entrance so the car do not have to make a decelerating lap like in F1.
Fantastic gentleman. This was EXACTLY what I was was hoping to see. Mike ... You are an absolute Hopeful as a Motorsport Journalist. Keep up the good work fellas
I just recently started to get into F1. Never really been into motor sports until recently and have realized I have a preference for open wheel style. Of course Indy is more accessible to see since I’m here in the us. So this video was very helpful. Thank you.
Ah awesome Kyle! Glad you have been a new fan getting into open wheel racing! F1 and IndyCar both have their positives and are great series to follow 😁 glad you found the video useful!
I'd love to know where you guys got some of this footage. Some very cool stuff in here. And yes, we're entering the open wheel heaven phase of the year. F1 is back. Super Formula is back. In a week, IndyCar is back. And for dirt race fans, there are sprint cars and outlaws at the local short ovals all summer.
Just RUclips! I just go searching the platform to whatever I think is relevant 😂 if you see the watermarks on the clips should say the channel we got it from and you can hopefully find it! Oh yes it is open wheel heaven indeed 🙌 and the next round of F1 and IndyCar's start will be on the same day! Great stuff! 🙌
I was an avid watcher of CART back in the late 80s and 90s. Now that they’re going to more road and street courses I’m going to give it a longer look. There could be some interesting times ahead for this series post pandemic. Hybrid engines could mean more manufacturers and the F1 cost cap could mean Ferrari and Mercedes coming on as teams and constructors.
Ah nice! Well Welcome back on board the IndyCar train! Agree certainly some interesting times ahead! Gave my thoughts on the Mercedes and Ferrari situation in another comment to you, buy attracting another manufacturer would be big for the series!
As an American who grew up with Indy and F1 (thanks Dad!) I’m so happy to see a British channel promoting Indy to British and European fans! Heck yeah!!!!
Me my dad and my brother have been into F1 for like 10 years. And now we are into Indycar too this year exited for the indy this weekend. I think a lot europeans are getting into it like us
Ah well I'm glad you're here because of Grosjean and stay for the racing! It's a great series, but I'm biased 😉 great race for Grosjean last weekend in the Indy GP!
Long time IndyCar fan (going back to the 70's) didn't know there was that much to explain. Always thought, outside of the ovals, that, since the 80's at least, IndyCar in look and procedure (not in costs or technologies) wasn't much different from F1. An interesting historical topic might be Jim Clark's career in IndyCars. He most famously won Indy in 1965, but his career wasn't limited to Indy and he also won a race at the famous Milwaukee Mile. Perhaps also F1/Indy related, the duel between Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart at the 1966 Indy 500.
I agree for long time racing fans you can definitely see the similarities between the series, but always good to describe to new fans unfamiliar with the series the slight differences between the 2! The Jim Clark one was definitely on our list probably in the next couple of weeks actually! But thankyou for the suggestion! The Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart one a great idea as well! Thanks for the comment and the suggestions!
I've watched F1 on and off since the late 80s, but I never really understood the whole championship, qualifying etc. Same with American football. Like it or not, I owe it to Netflix in regards to F1, everything finally clicked and I realized that the race itself is the culmination of a whole week or 2 weeks drama between drivers, mechanics, team bosses etc, and it just gets better as the season progresses. It is fair to say F1 is making a lot of money thanks to that show. Now we need one for Indy, I have no idea how Indy works, and in contrast to F1, I have never followed or watched an Indy race in my life, nascar either.
Yeah agree! A drive to survive style dhow without the artificial drama would be fantastic! IndyCar has enough big personalities by itself to make for a fantastic series!
Pole qualifying for the Indy 500 has changed the last few years with the addition of the fast 6, with the final shootout taking place on Sunday, the day after the traditional Pole Day
Great overview of the series. I would just add one point to your explanation of road/street qualifying: The two groups in segment one are determined by the "luck" of a blind name draw; thus opening up the possibility of one of these groups being "stacked" with a majority of the top drivers & teams. This gives at least some of the others (who would be in the other group) a better shot at making it at least into the second segment.
The challengers associated with the tight and blinding courses in IndyCar are underrated in reference to F1. Heck even the amount of traffic in IndyCar
but iracing has the indycars... and the 16th street league... which had real drivers competing... www.iracing.com/16th-street-racing-league-reborn/ and the old indycar 1/2 by papyrus!... they were made by Dave Krammer of iracing fame!...he was the first to bring sim element to us all with his Indianapolis 500: The Simulation in 1989! DK is the only one whos ever made indycar stuff....and still is!
iRacing has an awesome Indycar series and it's arguably the best current simracer. It's the platform they raced on virtually last year. Honestly, it's what got me into Indycar.
I just hope that at some point we get engine-sounds close to what we had in the early to mid 90s. We got the chassis-designs back to a modernized-version of the ones from that era. We got the deep-crop of talented-racers like we did then. If we could just get the engines to sound as cool, Indycar would be ALL the way back. :)
Well done, guys! I love the content and like the delivery. Right mix of fun, facts, and music. I’d like to see a break down of the drivers with multiple Indy 500 wins; 1) who is likely to earn 5 victories, 2) who has 4 victories, 3) who has earned 3, and 4) those that have won twice. Then maybe a quick bio on those with 3 and 4 Indy 500 victories, and “where are they now?”. Maybe even a current interview with them.
Great tutorial boys! Did you see the times today? Jack Harvey was in top 10 ahead of Helio! JPM P3.....the old mans still got chops...... Can't wait for May...I have suite seats on front straight! No more hauling coolers for miles.....should be excellent.
Niiiiice! Great seats Chip! Excited for you and fans to be back at the 500 this year, just not the same without it! But yeah some very interesting times and performances! Jack Harvey is doing his best to make my prediction of him getting pole come true 😂🙌
0:46 what is missing in the IndyCar Series engine car manufactors is Ford, Toyota and Dodge as the DW-12 and the IR-18 for every racing teams in the IndyCar Series
On a different note, for anyone who doesn't think Indy is a tough series to race, or that oval tracks are boring and require no skill, keep in mind that Jimmie Johnson, a bona fide oval master in NASCAR, is reluctant to dive into these open wheelers and run an oval race. I can understand why, too. The responsiveness of these cars is immense compared to the 3500 lb stock cars Johnson is used to racing. In NASCAR, the skill is in management of momentum and in the psychology of a racing series where "rubbing is racing." In Indy, the skill is in maintaining control of a twitchy, light chassis at blistering speeds in a series where "rubbing is crashing." A moment's break in concentration can result in snap oversteer that will put that sexy little Dallara straight into the wall. I think Johnson and Grosjean are both showing good sense in letting themselves accrue simulator time and real world practice to gain familiarity with the chassis before attempting something like, say, the 500.
I think a very good point Britt! I think we said it in a video how underrated and skilful you need to drive on ovals, there is definitely a real skill to it! Definitely agree that Jimmie and Romain made the right choice!
@Britt Gardner; That's an excellent view point and description of the vast difference between the two types of racing. It's that difference which makes, for me, IndyCar Racing especially at IMS the preferred series to follow, as I have for more decades than I would readily like to admit to lest I become termed as one of those "Boomers" which is an unnecessary pejorative term IMO.
Sorry it took so long to reply to the commen! Glad you enjoyed the video! We never have seen a gold Coast race while it was on the schedule but would love to have one back!
Great video. I don't want to nitpick just to nitpick, but I don't think "lack of success" is the right way to phrase it for the aerokits. It was a cost cutting measure and a way to help passing.
Cheers Ed! Really useful point actually thanks for that! We thought we would try and keep it simple, but the distinction between the two is worthy of note for sure!
I saw most of the races for 2021 but I wasn't to sure on points, rules and all that stuff. this defo helped clear up some confusion so thanks for the info👌🏼
Great video as always 😊 I didn't realise (as didn't get chance to catch qualifying much last year) that it differs at ovals! Really interesting. Thank you for lots of good info 😊 Can it be the 18th now please!
The worst track ever was a one mile circle track in Pennsylvania called Langhorne. It would develop ruts as dirt tracks do and caused many driver fatalities. How far back do you want to go? This is a little wide open. I know they ran on at least 50 tracks Assen, Brands Hatch, the Oval at Monza that doesn't count any of the dirt tracks... So I would also ask what's a bad track? One that kills it's drivers??... That would make the Indianapolis Motor Speedway the best and worst speedway in the world at the same time! Pike's peak is a great track that is no longer used. Ontario Motor speedway was to the extent possible an exact replica of Indy near Los Angeles, now it's a dying mall.
Great video, learned a lot, thanks for making this explainer, still a bit confused on quali but I'll pick it up As you know I'm quite fond of feeder series and was wondering if you know how indy lights and pro 2000 work, are they on the same weekends and before the main races?
Awesome glad it helped Sam 😊 um in regards to the feeder series/road to Indy stuff, unsure completely think the calendar will run at separate events on some occasions but will also run on the same weekend as some events as well! Realise that wasn't too helpful 😂 I'll find out and message in the discord, do know that the USF2000 will be at Barber starting their season the same weekend as IndyCar on the Saturday though! 😊
Wow guys great content, how about a video just on Indianapolis 500 qualifying and its history.Theoretically could we get together borrow some money from the bank, lease a car qualify pick up a sponsor one week before race, pay for the car then go home after the race? love how open it appears to the public. I do prefer to say Indianapolis 500 instead of indy 500.Love your work.
Thanks 😁 glad you enjoyed the video! And on the Indianapolis 500 note we can definitely vary it up in future videos 😊 yeah great topic ideas for videos! Think when we get into May the 500 content will definitely ramp up!
The limited number of engine leases would work against you. You would have to convince either Chevy or Honda that your team is more deserving of an engine than someone else. It might work at a race with a smaller field of cars, but the payout would be smaller as well.
thx for explaining. a really useful video. i used to watch nascar for years, when it was free broadcasted to europe. after NASCAR disappeared behind pay tv and i didn't had the money to pay for in tose days, i was getting more and more into F1 and now i'm interested in following Indy closer, because of the combination of oval and open wheel racing, the more overtaking action than in F1 and, as a HAAS Fan, following Romain Grosjean and Andretti. Nowadays i can luckily afford F1 TV and thinking about subscribing to Indy aswell. 🏎👍
Love the video. Minor points to add. The cars are virtually identical but the teams are allowed to build their own shocks (dampers). So the big teams have an advantage with more money and shaker rigs for shock development. Also talking about setups, not only are there wing angles but which level of wickers on the front and rear wings make a difference. There is also a 7th guy over the wall now just to remove Aeroscreen tear offs.
Thanks and glad you enjoyed the video 😁 ah really appreciate the feedback missed those things when going through the specs but yeah can understand them making a difference for sure from the likes of Penske to a Dale Coyne Racing for example. And ah makes sense about the 7th guy! I probably got the information on old videos on the pitstops! Thankyou for the corrections 😊
Reason why Indy demands a more well rounded car driver. No power steering Marginal mechanical edge Oval discipline, street/road discipline and gran prix circuit discipline. F1 drivers are not to be trifled with, but I believe that to be dominant in Indy car is far more difficult.
Yeah definitely think the IndyCar calendar is the most challenging in any single seater category for sure! And the no power steering definitely make the IndyCar a real physical challenge to handle as well as technical!
Actually there is a big difference in the Honda and Chevy engines. Honda is faster on straights and Chevy is faster in corners. Learned that at the 500 this year. Great video very helpful for newbies 👍
Yeah this confused me because I think it is nicknamed the DW-12 after Dan Wheldon. But on the official IndyCar website it is listed as the IR-12! Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed 😊
@@IndyFanatics yeah i went n looked it up myself.. seems the original chassis Dan tested back in the early 2010s was originally the IR-12..and they renamed it after his passing... "Honda (Scott Dixon) and Chevrolet (Will Power) began Phase II of on-track testing at Mid-Ohio in early October. A scheduled test at Las Vegas was cancelled after the fatal crash of Dan Wheldon at the venue, resulting in Dallara renaming the chassis, a practice adopted from Ligier, which named its race cars "JS" for Jo Schlesser."
Just came over from F1. This looks amazing! Very excited to get into it! One question though, are there designated drivers and teams who are usually expected to get podiums like F1, or is it literally everyone’s game?
Ah awesome news! Glad you are going to give IndyCar a try! There are 3 teams who historically have a better chance of winning they are Andretti Autosport, Team Penske and Chip Ganassi. But still a lot of variety as in the regular season they field 5 cars, 4 cars and 4 cars respectively and only Jimmie Johnson at Chip Ganassi you'd completely rule out of winning a race, so that's already 12 drivers competing for a win. But you also have Arrow McLaren SP on the rise with Pato O'Ward, Rinus Veekay at Ed Carpenter, Takuma Sato and Graham Rahal at Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing and actually Helio Castroneves from Meyer Shank Racing won the Indy 500 which is the biggest race of the year. So I've waffled a bit there 😂 short answer, Andretti, Penske and Ganassi are more likely to be on the podium but other teams have a much better chance to outside of those teams than F1 for example.
Ah they definitely can, one of my favourite F1 youtubers is a guy called Nick (Cranky Yankee Motorsports) I just think the IndyCar space on this platform is undervalued! David Land has been producing great real time content for a long while now and informative and I'm sure more will come to the platform in time! 😊 thankyou for the compliment though and glad you enjoyed the video 😁
@@IndyFanatics our best guy in IndyCar is David Land and that's not saying much, lol. I just let my 16 yr old daughter watch your vid and she watched the entire bit. If that converts to a life long IndyCar fan that's good for the sport. Most open wheel fan will enjoy both F1 and IndyCar.
Absolutely they are unique in their own ways and you can definitely appreciate both! And ah thanks! I'm glad she enjoyed it and hopefully she does get into it! Great series!
Your videos don't disappoint, and I must say, your enthusiasm for the sport is clear. At the risk of being a downer, I envy you the situation of being a new fan as you don't have any of the memories of being a long-standing fan. By that I mean the "split(s)" are in the past, many mistakes have been learned from, and the TV coverage is light-years ahead of where it was, both in quantity and quality (for a laugh, watch Sam Posey commentate, or better yet, don't).
Thanks Scott, appreciate the feedback and support as always! Yeah I can definitely see not that Indycar would have disappointed you in the past, but it would be tinged from the mistakes of the past and must have been frustrating to watch! Luckily it has developed into the series it has today, and to survive quite frankly it needed to. It needed to have a great racing product and in open wheelers it's arguably the best product currently. Haha I'm not sure whether to watch or not watch now 😂
@@IndyFanatics I'll warn you that the series will make mistakes again😉, but hopefully nothing like in the past. The animosity from '96-'99 cannot be understated, and still exists to some degree. Browse the comments of many races from that era to see, and this is 20+ years later. Sam wasn't so much a bad commentator, he was just on a different page than the audience, and said many stupid/unrelatable things. Watch ruclips.net/video/GwkIlp7zmgg/видео.html for an example. I doubt many people watching were all that familiar with sailing. He was a broadcaster for ABC for many years, so he did the 500 telecasts. The dynamic in the booth between he and Bobby Unser is legendary as Bobby would call him out often.
Yeah absolutely, but from my length of watching F1 there is also a lot of mistakes they have made, part of the parcel of top level motorsport. Though admit IndyCar really tried their best to top the list with those mistakes 😂 not surprised the animosity to the situation is still deep as it was such a mess. Ah OK well I will give a watch! He's modern day equivalent sounds like David Croft in F1, an OK hype man but talks absolute nonsense a lot of the time 😂
@@IndyFanatics I'll check out some Croft commentary. The one thing I like about F1 commentators (my favorite team from here in the US was Bob Varsha, David Hobbs, and Steve Matchette) is that they never "talked down" to the audience. Up until the early 1990's, networks would often use the same team for all big events. Jim McKay (for example) would broadcast Indy, the Masters, the Super Bowl, etc. with another person. He'd do a decent job, but didn't have "product knowledge". Jackie Stewart would be his broadcast partner for motorsports. While Sir Jackie is a legend and did not do a bad job, he was clearly out of his element for NASCAR. Posey was never a bad guy, and was knowledgeable (he was a decent sports car racer and ran Indy in 1972, finishing 5th). He just had something that irritated you and he tried to hard to make up for it, making it worse. Posey's most infamous moment came in 1986, trying to do a radio interview Kevin Cogan under yellow when Kevin was leading Indy with laps to go. Kevin's response ; "I'm kinda busy Sam" While it was cleared by Cogan's team, I don't think Sam ever lived it down, especially since Kevin got jumped on the restart by Bobby Rahal and finished 2nd.
My favourite commentary team in F1, though never got to experience it live because of my age was James Hunt and Murray Walker, had the perfect blend of entertainment, knowledge and great chemistry between the pair who started off with a difficult relationship but became good friends. Yeah its those type of things that sound good in principle but you do get exposed, especially when it's something you don't know much about! I mean yeah well meaning is OK, but it's knowing a time and a place and there is interfering too much with the event. Especially as something as big as the Indy500 the entertainment looks after itself, all you have to do is sit back and enjoy the show!
IndyCar is becoming an attractive alternative to F1 for me. Though sadly, I don't think my region has channels that are broadcasting it live. I only get snippets from YT.
Ah that is frustrating you only get the snippets! Indycar definitely Italy needs to build on its global viewing by having good TV coverage of the series!
Thx! Super well done. I'd love an episode on the rookies this year and what their journey looks like. Who's your pick for rookie of the year? Thanks again!!
Excellent primer for a n00b like me, thank you. One question of many.. do the drivers Lead A Lap points top out at 1 point? Once achieved there are no more unless Most Laps is achieved? Or a point for each led lap?
Hey Vincent! Glad you found the video useful! 😊 yup the points top out at 1 lap led, so as soon as you lead a lap you get 1 point but can't gain anymore from that point until like you said gaining the 2 points from most laps led!
@@IndyFanatics I now have a better understanding of why people like Scott Dickson prefer Indycars to F1. I'd love to see a head-to-head between him and Lewis Hamilton in both races.
Only question I have, after watching this video, is why don't Indycars use power steering? To me, using power steering would eliminate the driver having to fight the car and allow more control for safety and more competitive driving. I feel so bad for drivers, because Ive had to drive without power steering, but I can't even imagine driving between 75-200 mph without it. Much respect for Indycar drivers!
it's to make driving the car harder also because they want the cars to be demanding to drive but since they don't have the aero and power of F1 the lack of power steering more than makes up for it (plus Indy kinda wants to stay old school)
What are sticker tires? What is the difference in the Red Tires and the Black tires? Don't worry, it's perfectly correct to spell tires wyth an i, no matter your discomfort level. Great video! Thanks!!
Sticker tires are brand new, not used at all tires I'm not quite sure how the term sticker came to be. As for the difference between red and blacks it is similar to what F1 had a few years ago with the option and prime tires. The Red tires being like the option while the lacks being like the prime tire
Thanks Tyler, having talked to Greg quite a lot in the comments I wasn't sure if it was a rhetorical or genuine question but I think this is a great description of the difference between the two!
Very Good, Thanks Guys... They are called sticker tires because they are brand new and *still have the sticker put on there by Firestone*. You can see as the tires spin up what appears to be a white stripe on the tire, It wears off very quickly. Tires that are run one or two laps (usually in qualifying are set aside and are referred to as scuffed tires, no longer stickers, but have been through one heat cycle. They are still great tires and may be used in the race. Ovals only use the prime tire.
Ok after watching this its no wonder to me why Indy doesnt get the hype F1 does. Dont get me wrong im not a Indycar hater at all, but damn its just way to complicated, to come from F1 and try to get your head around all these weird rules is not easy. Hope they simplify it in the future and that the series grows a ton cause i think it has lots of potential of gaining many more fans.
Also how is the weekend/weeks schedule for the races, like how in f1 we have free practice 1 and 2 on Friday, fp3 on Saturday, followed by qualifications and then the race on Sunday. Also I heard something about indy500 and not racing if there is rain?
So a usual weekend schedule would be everything over the weekend, so practice, qualifying on a Saturday, then a practice and race on the Sunday! Indy 500 is a little different as they have a lot of practice then a whole weekend for qualifying and then you have the race just on the Sunday! Yeah if the weather is raining at the 500 it won't go ahead or will be stopped as it will be too dangerous for the cars to tun at those speeds
Does Indy have a website so I can keep up? I started watching F1 last year and I wanted to get into this now. I'm trying to watch most of racing so I am going to watch DTM.
On ovals it is decided by reverse order of the championship, with last going for the first qualifying run. On Road and Street courses, the top times from the drivers in practice determine their groups!
A few questions. Are competition cautions still a thing in IndyCar? Why, even on road courses, do they throw a full course yellow for a small incident instead of just using yellow flags in the area of the incident? What's the deal with blue flags or rather the lack of them?
In regards to the full course cautions even despite incidents maybe being small I believe that is probably in relation to IndyCar's dedicated safety team having to respond to every incident and therefore entering the track to ensure that even on a small incident the driver is safe and the vehicle can be recovered quickly and safely. F1 for example relies on Marshalls stationed at different points on the track so I guess they can report how serious an incident is slightly quicker in that regards. Blue flags or lack of I guess is because the series feels there is no need for them as the drivers are pretty respectful of each other and no-one purposefully tries to hold up the lead lap cars so I guess they just trust the drivers more to do the right thing.
Like @Indy Fanatics said, full course yellow is for when safety workers are on track. If there is a case of a car that just spun into the grass and can return to the race on its own or is disabled and parked where it is no danger, the corner workers wave a local yellow. They do use blue flags, but only for an instant so you could miss seeing them if you are not looking at the right time. They also have a yellow with red stripe flag for liquid or debris on the track. As I recall, the competition caution thing was a special situation with excessive tire wear on a new track surface. That is not a regular feature of Indycar races, but NASCAR has them.
@@IndyFanatics That is a great idea seeing how The Andretti name (along with Jeff & John) is one of royalty to fans of American Open Wheel (IndyCar) Racing. Along with The Unser Family & Team Penske's huge stable of 18 (& counting) Indy 500 & IndyCar Series Champions.
Forgot, teams don't share pits. Every car gets their own pit box, so stacking isn't an issue.
Yeah no good point! And that's great for the sport as it brings in even more elements to strategy in races!
I got into F1 last year and this year I’m looking forward to getting into Indy

And yes, we're entering the open wheel heaven phase of the year. F1 is back. Super Formula is back. In a week, IndyCar is back.
And for dirt race fans, there are sprint cars and outlaws at the local short ovals all summer.
Just RUclips! I just go searching the platform to whatever I think is relevant 😂 if you see the watermarks on the clips should say the channel we got it from and you can hopefully find it!
Oh yes it is open wheel heaven indeed 🙌 and the next round of F1 and IndyCar's start will be on the same day! Great stuff! 🙌
Just discovered this video by accident. 2 minutes in, I’ve seen more than enough to win me over.

A nice explanation of IndyCar for those who have never seen it.
Thanks Tyler! Appreciate the feedback 😊
I recently watched every CART race from the 90's. It was the best.
Love the channel, guys! Glad there’s fellow Indy fans across the pond. This season will be awesome!
Thanks Louis! Glad you like the channel and enjoyed the video 😁 yup it will! Can't wait!
I think a lot europeans are getting into it like us
Here because of Grosjean!
Indycar looks great, hope this season grabs me
Ah well I'm glad you're here because of Grosjean and stay for the racing! It's a great series, but I'm biased 😉 great race for Grosjean last weekend in the Indy GP!
This deserves more views, great video!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it 😁
Long time IndyCar fan (going back to the 70's) didn't know there was that much to explain.
Pole qualifying for the Indy 500 has changed the last few years with the addition of the fast 6, with the final shootout taking place on Sunday, the day after the traditional Pole Day
Thanks for this added depth in information Jess! Appreciate it 😊
Fast nine not six. Thx
Thanks for adding more depth to the qualifying! Appreciate you taking the time to 😊 glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching!
The challengers associated with the tight and blinding courses in IndyCar are underrated in reference to F1. Heck even the amount of traffic in IndyCar
Yeah absolutely! They are tricky and challenging circuits and a handful to manage!
Podcast idea: History and L-O-N-G absence of Indycar video games
Ooo that is a good idea and how it hasn't capitalised on the digital platform in attracting a younger audience!
but iracing has the indycars... and the 16th street league... which had real drivers competing... www.iracing.com/16th-street-racing-league-reborn/
and the old indycar 1/2 by papyrus!... they were made by Dave Krammer of iracing fame!...he was the first to bring sim element to us all with his Indianapolis 500: The Simulation in 1989! DK is the only one whos ever made indycar stuff....and still is!
iRacing has an awesome Indycar series and it's arguably the best current simracer. It's the platform they raced on virtually last year. Honestly, it's what got me into Indycar.
Yeah the official indy car series on iracing is a blast.
Well we got our video game now lol
I just hope that at some point we get engine-sounds close to what we had in the early to mid 90s. We got the chassis-designs back to a modernized-version of the ones from that era. We got the deep-crop of talented-racers like we did then. If we could just get the engines to sound as cool, Indycar would be ALL the way back. :)
Yeah the engine sound would be great to bring back! Not sure if it's possible anymore! But hopefully because it was deafening before!
That sounds very good content ideas and certainly will be a big 500 content month in May to tie in with the race!

@@IndyFanatics Iiiiiiiiiiiiits Race Time!
You're damn right it is! Racing season is here 🏁😎
On a different note, for anyone who doesn't think Indy is a tough series to race, or that oval tracks are boring and require no skill, keep in mind that Jimmie Johnson, a bona fide oval master in NASCAR, is reluctant to dive into these open wheelers and run an oval race. I can understand why, too. The responsiveness of these cars is immense compared to the 3500 lb stock cars Johnson is used to racing. In NASCAR, the skill is in management of momentum and in the psychology of a racing series where "rubbing is racing." In Indy, the skill is in maintaining control of a twitchy, light chassis at blistering speeds in a series where "rubbing is crashing."
A moment's break in concentration can result in snap oversteer that will put that sexy little Dallara straight into the wall.
Excellent explanation of IndyCar series as I could have asked for. Great job!!!
Thanks Frank glad you enjoyed it and found it useful! 😊 and thanks for watching!
Great break down of all things Indycar guys, I certainly miss the Gold Coast race we used to host down here in Aus.

Yeah was an absolutely fantastic Indy 500 event for sure!
Great video. I don't want to nitpick just to nitpick, but I don't think "lack of success" is the right way to phrase it for the aerokits. It was a cost cutting measure and a way to help passing.
Always happy for people to nitpick, because it means that we learn more 😊 thanks for the information! Appreciate it!
I'd separate short ovals and super speedway ovals in the type of tracks. Very different ovals, including use of different rear wings between the two.
Cheers Ed! Really useful point actually thanks for that! We thought we would try and keep it simple, but the distinction between the two is worthy of note for sure!
Right!

@@tadroid3858 from Mike and Steven

As you know I'm quite fond of feeder series and was wondering if you know how indy lights and pro 2000 work, are they on the same weekends and before the main races?
Great work! Thanks for the videos!
No problem at all! Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching 😊
thx for explaining. a really useful video. i used to watch nascar for years, when it was free broadcasted to europe. after NASCAR disappeared behind pay tv and i didn't had the money to pay for in tose days, i was getting more and more into F1 and now i'm interested in following Indy closer, because of the combination of oval and open wheel racing, the more overtaking action than in F1 and, as a HAAS Fan, following Romain Grosjean and Andretti.

What an awesome gem of a channel. You guys will definitely blow up if indycar stays or gains in popularity.
Thanks Dustin 😁🙌 really kind of you to say and glad you enjoy what we do!
Reason why Indy demands a more well rounded car driver.
No power steering
Marginal mechanical edge
Oval discipline, street/road discipline and gran prix circuit discipline.
I would like a short history lesson of indycarl please. Kinda interested in it's splits and mergers it had over the years
We actually have a 5 part series we did on the channel called the history of indycar! It should be a playlist on the channel 😊

Actually there is a big difference in the Honda and Chevy engines. Honda is faster on straights and Chevy is faster in corners. Learned that at the 500 this year. Great video very helpful for newbies 👍
Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching! And yeah you're damn right whichbis interesting seeing the difference between the 2!
im pretty sure they called DW12 not IR-12!...
nice vid yet again guys
Thanks for the added extra information really appreciated and interesting to know 😊

@@IndyFanatics Thanks so much for the detailed explanation! I’ll learn these drivers in time 😂.
No problem! 😂 never hesitate to ask questions in the comments, will always endeavour to answer them the best I can!
Why can't Americans make IndyCar content this good? Is because Europeans and motorsports is like Americans and football? Good job boys!
Something you missed is race strategy and how safety cars / pit stops work compared to F1. A video speaking about this would be good :)
I think it's worth noting that Indianapolis motor speedway is the largest sporting venue in the world. About 400,000 people
That actually is a very good point to mention! Definitely worth noting, thanks for bringing it up! 😊
I’ve got to say the big 3 races to win is Monaco for f1, Daytona 500 for nascar, and Indy 500 for Indy car
Yup they are definitely big races and I'd definitely still include Le Mans in there!
Where do you guys think Is the closest race to Charlotte North Carolina. For the 2022 season?
Closest ones I reckon would be Barber in Birmingham or Nashville!
Ovals are great. They drive real fast and they turn to the left sometimes.
The main part is the driving fast though 😉
@@IndyFanatics haha indeed! I’m a fan of Indy, that was just a South Park reference ;)
@@TheRealCabe I thought you were trying to reference Cartman 😂 but didn't like to assume!
Well done video guys! Thanks. I think the word you were looking for is "comprised".
one of the drivers is really named wil power
Yep. And he lives up to the name as he’s also a 2 time champion and 39 time winner over the course of 16 years
The 2 different tires are only used on road and street circuits. Ovals only use 1 compound
Missed that in my research! Thankyou for noting it Jerry! Useful point 😊
Much respect for Indycar drivers!
it's to make driving the car harder
also because they want the cars to be demanding to drive but since they don't have the aero and power of F1 the lack of power steering more than makes up for it (plus Indy kinda wants to stay old school)
How old do you have to be in order to start Indy racing?
What are sticker tires? What is the difference in the Red Tires and the Black tires? Don't worry, it's perfectly correct to spell tires wyth an i, no matter your discomfort level. Great video! Thanks!!
Thanks Greg 😂 glad you enjoyed the video and appreciate your support as always! 😁
@@IndyFanatics if it was I didn't get the context but thanks
I'm a nascar fan, I"ll be seriously watching this year with Kyle Larson in the 500.

It certainly would be great to see a show on it!
I watched Romain Grosgean driving an indycar and I could have sworn he used a halo instead of a screen.
Haha 😂 yeah that Mercedes IndyCar I'm sure is very quick 😉

As a brief history of video? 😊
For Qualifying: How do they decided who goes in what group
On ovals it is decided by reverse order of the championship, with last going for the first qualifying run. On Road and Street courses, the top times from the drivers in practice determine their groups!
Thanks. This helped me a lot.
@@jeffragar3493 thankyou for filling in the gaps and adding a more in depth answer 😊 very useful!
Man, I gotta get myself back to Road America.
Do it! Sure the race is going to be awesome this year as well 🙌
Can you make a video on Marco Andretti’s carreer? Why it failed? Which was his true potential?
Great video idea! We think we will do it as a 3 part series covering the Andretti's in American Open Wheel Racing!
Great video ideas Tim! Thanks as always for sharing!
Good stuff. Thanks!
No problem! Thanks for watching!
