  • As a fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon, I am incredibly passionate about sharing the importance of prevention. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, but it is also the most preventable.
Sunscreen should be part of your daily skin care routine, but that does not mean it has to be unpleasant. The goal is to prevent the sun’s UV from accelerating aging and increasing our risk of developing skin cancer. To do that you have to use sunscreen consistency. That requires you finding a sunscreen you like, and I am here to help you with that! This is an overview of how to evaluate, choose and use sunscreen as part of your sun safe strategy. It's important to know that any sunscreen is better than no sunscreen despite all the controversies that we will be touching on below.

Thank you for this. I love hearing your recommendations and would be interested to know which one you would choose for my face. My two cents...I would love to see a breakdown by skin type. Also, as someone with super sensitive skin (face) which is dry/normal, I can only tolerate fragrance-free sunscreens (strangely, I break out from the Vanicream sunscreen on my face but use the cleanser and cream for my body and face, daily). I know a good chunk on that list are not fragrance-free. Some I'd never heard of and will investigate. I'm also in the camp of folks who can't tolerate Vitamin C and use a derivative.
Personally, I don't like sprays. I feel like they're not reliable. You miss spots. I never know if I get enough on. I have tried dozens, maybe hundreds, of sunscreens, and the only one my face seems to tolerate is EVY Kids 50, which I order from overseas. It's a foam, which I never thought I'd ever use. But I have yet to break out from it, and I've worn it for three years...I have yet to find a U.S. sunscreen that feels good and looks good. My body is less temperamental. Cheers (might try your cleansing balm. I even order that from overseas)...
