I have to admit that I had some bias to SSY by visual. With mask, she sounds fantastic. But Sohyang is special and she has some extra factor above all. I like her hand gestures also.

I love Son Seung Yon, I just love her beautiful belts and powerful voice. This might just be a personal preference but I just prefer a stronger sounding voice. She gave me chills in Winter Story, since then, she’s been my fave. I’m not going to lie So Hyang has a very powerful voice, she’s truly amazing.

Sohyang wins but Seungyeon is incredible too and has a lot of potential to improve in the future.
I'm sure son seungyeon has better B4s but this specific one isnt comparable to SoHyang's home B4

One tip - use normalization because all video cuts are with different volume. You missed some quite good G5s. Also this note vs note comparison doesn't show at all their real singing skills which is more important than just the quality of several notes. Their dynamics, transition, connected registers, musicianship and so on. Both are great singers. SoHyang is more skillful and she can do more impressive vocal acrobatics, feasts with her voice and more touching ones as well. Also dynamics from very soft and quiet moments to very powerful ones is much more present in SoHyang singing. She constantly use very big voice dynamics - at one moment is so soft, quiet and soothing and in the next moment she is up there belting with full power and again down very soft and again up there. This is a very impressive and captivating way of singing. It's also very hard. Very few singers pay so much attention to the dynamics and their voices must allow such huge difference and control. Many voices lacks capability to produce very quiet and soft sounds because under a certain power it turns just into a whisper. Every voice is limited to certain point. SoHyang voice is capable of such huge dynamics and she use it non stop in almost all her songs. Quite impressive. Their head voices are developed very differently and this is very important register. Son Seung Yeon needs a lot of work here which also can improve her vocal range. Son Seung Yeon is limited because of that and she avoids songs which heavily rely on head voice. They both are amazing but generally SoHyang is better vocalist without a doubt.

Well said. Your comments speak to my reaction. I am a Sohyang fan but also love Son Seung Yeon's voice. It's clear to me that Sohyang's control of the dynamics and her heavenly head voice give her an edge. Meanwhile the power and fierceness of SSY's tone sure sets her apart. It's particularly noticeable for notes below F5 to me. Enjoyed the compilation to listen to these notes side by side since I am not good enough to isolate them in their performances. Music is not really about competition but fun to compare.

That's just your opinion and others will have theirs too, some more valid than others. But what's undeniable is this, just take note of their AGE GAP. Sonnet Son has time on her side to be where Kim is today. Cheers.

I agree on all points, and will add that SoHyang also is vocal agility if that is the right words. Listen to Faith and you will hear what I mean. Fluent runs without missing a note. And not necessarily up to the high notes. Actually they are not the most pleasing to my ears. Maybe that is what you call vocal acrobatics? Could be the same.
Sohyang has more emotions in her voice.
Both of them are my favorite Korean singers but Sohyang is always the first.

Yeah I agree, I found that comparison of Sohyangs performances on KOMS and Son seung-yeons performances, I found that Sohyangs were just more profound and iconic. But son seung on immortal songs also has some incredible performances. They’re both some of the best singers there are right now.

Without being biased, I would say son Seung Yeon is a better belter until about F5, and Sohyang is better at about everything else. Both vocalists are in my top 5 though!

They are very different style's vocalists. Sohyang has much more opened sound, and Son suengyeon has strong cord contacted sound. I just don't understand why people always use Sohyang to compare with other singers. She is just on her own league. No one can be like her.
And I don't want Son Seungyeon to be like her.
Both are excellent in my book! Different voices but equal in every regard. Son Seung Yeon has a deeper, darker, powerful, more soulful voice. Sohyang's voice is more elastic, brighter, and has a crystalline like angelic tone. If they both team up like Whitney and Mariah did, they'll be the undisputed, undefeatable singing pair! My ears will take both Son Seung and Sohyang please, thank you!

Sonnnet's voice is very connected. Like a raging flame protecting its flamelets. Its a very commanding voice.

In the last fifty years or so ,SoHyang is in my top 5. There is no order all 5 are generational singers! She might be the best at making us feel the song and It doesn’t matter if it’s in a language you understand, you feel what she sings! Also her arrangements are so, so Amazing! SoHyang all the way! Laura Fabian is very close in the way she delivers the emotion of the song, next would be Morrisette Amon! All Super Stars!

I love both of them. They are great singers who have their own auras. But when some comments here saying SSY sounds like straining to hit high notes, I guess she sounds clearer and smoother in tones compared to SH. Indeed SH can reach higher notes, but I think SSY has more beautiful tones. Don't get me wrong, I love them both. For sure, everytime SSY sings ballad, I'll surely cry..that shows how soulful her voice is.. 🙂

For the low and mid belting, Son Seung Yeon got it. She possesses a very rich supported range in such levels. But, So Hyang could easily eat her alive in the upper belting and head tone. Her range is supported and powerful.
I have never admired a singer who has touched me so much with her songs.. been a fan of so hyang since 2017 with her king of mask stint...and since then I was hooked...never spent a day without listening to her songs... every song is a lullaby...ssy is also a good singer and have watched her from immortal songs show, but my heart goes to so hyang... not only with her angelic heavenly voice...but knowing, too that she's an amazing person inside and out!

소향님의 발성법은 일반가수들이 따라하지 못합니다..저음이나 초고음에서 입모양 보시면 0자 모양을 만드는데 오페라에서 사용하는 발성법입니다..음의 톤을 넓혀서 낮은 음이라도 멀리퍼저나갑니다..고음도 가는 고음이 아니라 다른가수들 보다 훨신 소리가입체적으로 들리고 멀리까지 울립니다..다른가수들 하고 비교자체가 불가능한 대적불가능급 소향 ..손승연도 나름 쩌는 가수지만 소향과 비교하면 어른과 아이정도급 손승연이 잘한다고 생각하시는 분도 계시는데 그건 각자취향이기도 하고 아직 음악의 고급스킬을 모르니 그런말이 가능하다고 생각 합니다..
