    As a life long Habs fan living in Toronto, this was the greatest series of hockey I've seen in my life! Everything about it was just perfect. The trash talk from Toronto media when it was 3-1. Then the comeback to force game 7! You knew it was over by then. The deep run they went on after was just icing on top the cake for me.

    I am not a Leafs fan, but until their core of Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Reilly come through when it matters most they are going to continue to be the brunt of everyone's memes and jokes. At some point, they have to deliver. You can have all the accolades you want of scoring 50 goals in a season, but if you don't produce on the big stage, no one cares about all those accolades.

    • @Katie-hb8iq
      @Katie-hb8iq 2 года назад +3

      With a lot of time passed, I think differently on this. Yes, it's superficial to say "Matthews didn't score", but it's way more complicated than that.
      The team was actually pretty poorly constructed for the playoffs. Thornton was washed up and not helpful - should have been scratched. Thornton made several mistakes that cost them goals. He's now gone, and he's playing even worse for Florida.
      Simmonds was still recovering from his wrist, and let's face it, he's not the player he once was.
      Dermott, Sandin and Galchenyuk were all prone to making mistakes that cost them games. 2 of the 3 are gone, and the last might not make the top 6.
      Foligno was playing injured, and with Tavares out, they just didn't have many centers.
      For all the blame Matthews and Marner got, Hyman didn't do anything either.
      Scoring depth was pretty bad - Mikheyev was having an awful season, and the scoring was basically left to Nylander, Kerfoot, Spezza and Muzzin/Brodie.
      Having said all of that, Toronto wasn't the only the team susceptible to having their top players shut down. Winnipeg and Vegas also got shut down by Danault's line - this is far from a Leafs problem. One could argue that playing Montreal was bad luck, as they probably would have performed much better against Edmonton and Winnipeg if that was their 1st round opponent. The modified trap and the style of players on Montreal's roster is honestly a pretty good foil for teams like Toronto. Montreal would have beat Tampa too if not for their insane amount of depth - notice it was Tampa's 3rd and 4th lines that came through for them, despite their top players being shut down.
      Dubas learned a lot from this experience. The team now has 6 centerman and 8 NHL defensemen. The team also has a lot more scoring depth, just in case their top line gets shut down again. The team is much more resilient to injuries - they aren't forced to play rookies who have never played in the regular season anymore.
      Sadly, Toronto is also very unlucky in that 3 of the best teams in that division also happen to be in the top 4 teams in the entire NHL. Shit luck. Despite a much better roster, they might actually lose the coin-flip anyway. If Toronto loses to the Stanley Cup champions in game 7 by 1 goal, is the narrative still going to be that they suck? If it is, it'll be pretty disingenuous despite how disappointing that would be.

    I remember this shit two years later. As a Leaf fan, I’ll admit, game 6 was the worst, I was beyond livid. Game 7 I literally didn’t watch, I played FF7 Remake in my basement instead while the rest of my family watched upstairs, I knew they would fuck it up. It really is disheartening that 2/3 franchises I cheer for are laughingstocks everyone laughs at. At least I have you, 2019 Raptors.

    As a bruins fan, who hates Montreal…we may have our rivalry and competitive hatred toward each other, but we must band together in unity come playoffs and continue the misery of our greatest enemy…the Toronto Maple Leafs. So I thank the Montreal Canadiens for handing this glorious spanking to the maple leafs on national tv 🤣

    Not the first time this has happened to the Leafs, that said key saves and big bodies on the Habs took the series.... don't underestimate what Weber, Edmunson, Staal, Perry, Chariot and Armia bring..over 6'4" and 240lbs on average each will wear a team down in the corners and in front of the net.
    Today the Habs lost 99% of those players and the Leafs aren't really any bigger or tougher, so good luck.
