Husband and I were discussing that today. We went to an upscale wine and dinner tasting at a restaurant a few years ago. Sat with a diverse group of couples. One couple arrived late. In their late 60s. His wife had a bohemian chic going with a colorful caftan of linen and an antique cashmere stole and Birkenstocks. He had the vibe of Jimmy Buffett, complete with teva sandals. Awesome couple. They flew into the private island airport on their own plane they owned. He was in oil and they were late arriving from the Keys. They were hilarious and absolutely charming and didnt give a fig about how they were dressed.

The reason that some of these colors are tied to the rich and royalty is due to historical dye costs. The deeper the color the more expensive because it sat longer in the dye baths. As for neutrals if you spend thousands of dollars on one item of clothing you are going to want it to last. No fast fashion. It's going to be classic styles that can match various other clothing items.
Yet the bright winter that I am looks good in jewel tones due to my high contrast pale skin and dark hair; it is best to wear what suits you. PLUS our Queen Elizabeth loved lilacs and lime green a lot.
She didn't wear bright, solid colors like that when she was younger. Once she got elderly, her dresses were less fitted. I liked some of them, but the rest were basically the same shift in bright colors.
It pays to find out if youre a "fall", winter or spring" or summer" Even though you get older, you are always that particular color set. That said, in the winter when im rather pale, i may try some of the "summer" colors like dusty rose, or peach. But basically, im always going to be a "spring" on account of my warm toned skin.
I had enough navy and forest green as a child going to a Catholic school. Our uniforms were that color and we had to change from one to the other every two weeks. The blazers were really hard to keep clean, so they needed to be dry cleaned frequently. 😝😝 When I finally graduated, I gave the blazers to our local thrift shop and bought myself outfits of jeans, tee shirts, sweats and down jackets that I still wear all of these decades later. 🤣🤣

Makes sense. If you're coming from old money, you have a name that means something. You can't disappear from that. Whereas new money is usually flashy and bright, like a sparkler in the night. Their money is around for THOUSANDS of years, in some cases.
Beautiful pieces. I would love to have quite a few of them. They never go out of style. This is how everyone on Martha's Vineyard and here in Riverside CT dress.
I lived in Greenwich, Ct in the late 1980's, 90's & early we 2000's. The style was pretty low key ... nothing over the top. On Greenwich Ave, if someone dressed in a flashy manner I figured they were most likely from out of town and/or were just trying too hard to make an impression.
Now being retired, I have changed the way I dress. More classic styles and neutral colors are more of a mainstay. Especially dressy pieces that I do not wear as often any longer. I still love fun, trendy, colorful pieces, though. How you put it together is important, also.
These color combinations are exactly the ones my mother always wore. She hated loud splashy prints particularly. She loved to wear, camel, bone, tan, navy and black. She always looked elegant. 🧡
I do love and wear those colours. Very difficult to find my size as I am slim and Petite. I love classic well made clothing, which will not easily go out of style. Yes, less is enough. A pop of colour goes a long way. I love small, fine jewelry, no more than 2 peaces. I also adore pearls. Well fitting blazers are a staple as well. Learned how to dress from my mother, aunts, grandparents and my great Aunt and Uncle who were wonderful. I save the sweat pants, leggings, old tops for taking care of my snakes, cat, housework, garden. I am 74 and do like to make a nice appearance going out.
Great presentation..& wonderful suggestion to building ones wardrobe ..One suggestion though ...I come from a design background .and For "the forest Green "segment... most of those shades are not forest green ... Find other pic's to better demonstrate "Forest Green" or just call them shades of a Green Forest
Colour snob here. Yes, you're right in this video for the most part however the many of the visuals, especially the greens are the wrong hue. Too many kelly green examples. As for the burgundy, there were too many red examples. We are VERY picky with colors.
Interesting...I naturally love every one of these colors and mostly have these colors in my closet (plus deep red)...didn't know about them being tied to old money style.
Your “forest green” images were all over the place. It isn’t olive and its isn’t light and bright. Burgundy has no warmth to it as it is blue based. Many of these colors are based on Anglo-Saxon coloring - that’s why they are soft and muted.
There are other hues. It may not be camel, but there is apricot, beige, brown, bronze, khaki, coffee brown... These can be a substitute for camel. And the texture, fabric and style of the garment counts a lot. For instance in general I don't look good in white, if I'm going to wear white it has to be a beach style dress in Brazilian styled lace or a formal suit. Other than those two I don't really go with white, but I had to really experiment to figure out what garments in white suit me best, It's the same with pink, I look good in certain hues of pink and they have to be mostly midi skirts, but it took me a long time to understand this. So my point is we have to experiment, there are colours that best highlight our skin and there are those that don't, but in those colours that don't highlight the best in us, there are garments that we will simply look stunning in, so experiment is my motto.
This video is entirely correct. My FAVORITE color is navy, burgundy, and gray. I feel like approachable royalty in it. It goes well with my blonde highlights. I love cream, camel, and white too. But it's harder to go with my hair and skin tone. I prefer cool skin tones. Colors are what garners your attention, not flashy decorations like sequins. Forest Green is harder for me to partake in.
My brother gave me 2 Armani sweaters fr the 90's that he was unloading...they are beautiful..classic light gray and light cream...they still look new, they are tailored to fit slim man, im short and slim, i put one on maybe once every couple of years, they are a treasure❤
I have pale olive with slight green undertone, Scotch Irish French skin. What is flattering is what I like. Plus I love jewel tones. I have imagined it would be wonderful to have mostly neutral colors, natural wool or alpaca, and colorful scarves and accessories. But my emotions crave color.
All of these colors flatter my skin tone except for Camel. I wear a variation of beige called Greige or sand. It is a beige with grey undertones, or grey-beige. I look better in it than camel.
some of the tones in the "muted" section look awful, even on those women. Muted is a non-statement. Plus people rarely look great in them, despite fashion. Best to always wear exactly what suits you!
Lovely video, great clothes. My mentors in style gave me the best tip: Black Turtleneck Comfortable Slacks They’re both billionaires. And they’re comfortable being stylishly uncomplicated.
This video would have more validity if they interviewed wealthy people and examined their closets to see the actual colors they wear. I’m going to wear whatever colors I love and go well with my skin complexion and season. Period. The end. 😎😎😎♥️♥️♥️
Yes agree, muted colours are not flattering on many but the basics base colours of navy grey cream, camel / beige for example as base wardrobe then add your blouse sweater scarf or dress in spring green or turquoise with navy (coat jacket etc) & yellow with forest green , coral with cream, “your red” with your camel or beige & pink or sky light blue with burgundy. etc. . Personally Im into sorbet coloured cashmeres sweaters & cardigans & scarves + silk scarves like hermes or pucci & similar beautiful colours at the neck. Although I still agree with the video that start with your primary wardrobe pieces like pants skirts coats in her suggested classic neutrals
I appreciate this guidance very much. I really enjoy these. I must confess, you lost me on the forest green. What I know as forest green, you illustrated 80% of the time, but the woman in the twirling in forest was wearing a green that was working it's way towards lime. Cheers!
Seems like we have more freedom than the rich...thank you for explaining that through this video. Also that they care more about appearing rich than we do, if that limited palette is what they stick to, despite being rich. Alright, i know thats not what this video wanted to say 😊. Just my morning mood, i guess. I was a bit surprised to even find those colours in my wardrobe, although I'm not rich. I guess we just pick what we want to wear, in the end. I wanna look stylish, not rich, really. Some of the old money English wear absolutely horrible clothes. I would never try to imitate them. The fascination with the rich isnt universal. Most of us are happy with our lives, such as it is, and dont believe the rich are doing way better. They just have more money. I would copy artistic people, musicians, stylish people, and maybe some intellectual people who also look smart. Wanting to look like you're artsy, intellectual or talented is also pretension of a kind. Maybe we hope that people cant tell 😅. But its fairly easy to tell the rich from the non-rich because its definitely not just their clothes. Its their lifestyle. So why would anyone try to look rich ? Its fools no one.
1. navy 2. camel (between beige & tan) 3. cream 4. grey 5.forest green 6. burgundy 7. muted colors.
I would also say teal.
Thank you.

These color combinations are exactly the ones my mother always wore. She hated loud splashy prints particularly. She loved to wear, camel, bone, tan, navy and black. She always looked elegant. 🧡
Where would the late Queen Elizabeth fit in? She was pretty much photographed wearing every color. The times I did see her, she was never in the navy.
She was on display and therefor didn't need to follow any rules of subtlety.
To stand out she chose vibrant colors . She was often the brightest !!
Changing my wardrobe next year! ☺️ Thank you.xo
I appreciate the presentation. ❤
Wonderful Video❤ Thank you!
Excellent video. I'm a man but I still found this insightful and useful.
Loved it! Thanks for this beautiful video!
Yes very elegant. I tend to go for patterns and bold colors. Follow what is natural to you.
Colour snob here. Yes, you're right in this video for the most part however the many of the visuals, especially the greens are the wrong hue. Too many kelly green examples. As for the burgundy, there were too many red examples. We are VERY picky with colors.
"Colour snob" hahaha! Even my house is in colors of Black, Taupe and gold😂. I seemed to have some sort of hang-up wearing colors.
I can't imagine my life without my vibrant colors
Interesting...I naturally love every one of these colors and mostly have these colors in my closet (plus deep red)...didn't know about them being tied to old money style.
Your “forest green” images were all over the place. It isn’t olive and its isn’t light and bright. Burgundy has no warmth to it as it is blue based. Many of these colors are based on Anglo-Saxon coloring - that’s why they are soft and muted.
Came here to say just this same thing.
Me too, ridiculous! Forest green is dark green, not every shade of green there is! Only a couple of their images were forest green!
This is 💯 spot on
I love navy .
Wrong. Not everyone can wear camel, black, white, as well as many other colors. One has to discover what colors best highlight their skin tones.
Camel drains all the color from my pale skin. I think it is beautiful on others.
Any camel and beige will kill me off.. It will be like an outfit walking without the person in it.😖
There are conservative colors… *yawns
This video is entirely correct. My FAVORITE color is navy, burgundy, and gray. I feel like approachable royalty in it. It goes well with my blonde highlights. I love cream, camel, and white too. But it's harder to go with my hair and skin tone. I prefer cool skin tones.
Colors are what garners your attention, not flashy decorations like sequins.
Forest Green is harder for me to partake in.
I love forrest green 🎉
My brother gave me 2 Armani sweaters fr the 90's that he was unloading...they are beautiful..classic light gray and light cream...they still look new, they are tailored to fit slim man, im short and slim, i put one on maybe once every couple of years, they are a treasure❤
I have pale olive with slight green undertone, Scotch Irish French skin. What is flattering is what I like. Plus I love jewel tones. I have imagined it would be wonderful to have mostly neutral colors, natural wool or alpaca, and colorful scarves and accessories. But my emotions crave color.
That's why my rich cousin who owned a gift shoppe always bought textiles in Ylaya Divisoria, Manila, tone, hue of camel, brown.
i needed this , i want to reinvent myself as a classy woman . I'm a currently a chav from Leeds
NAVY
CAMEL
CREAM
GREY
FOREST GREEN
BURGUNDY
I would include white to that .
@alicesamuels3937 I was just summarizing what's in the video. Stark white isn't, cream is more subtle.
Yet they showed grass green 😂
All of these colors flatter my skin tone except for Camel. I wear a variation of beige called Greige or sand. It is a beige with grey undertones, or grey-beige. I look better in it than camel.
Colours for job appliance in policy/ economic field …. Remind me of school uniforms …
makes me cringe 😬
some of the tones in the "muted" section look awful, even on those women. Muted is a non-statement. Plus people rarely look great in them, despite fashion. Best to always wear exactly what suits you!
Great video! Love to see a video like this for men
Lovely video, great clothes.
My mentors in style gave me the best tip:
Black Turtleneck
Comfortable Slacks
They’re both billionaires.
And they’re comfortable being stylishly uncomplicated.
Plenty of ultra wealthy people wearing t-shirts, jeans and flip flops.
And it’s tacky lol
Flip flops? 😂😂
Jackie O
This video would have more validity if they interviewed wealthy people and examined their closets to see the actual colors they wear. I’m going to wear whatever colors I love and go well with my skin complexion and season. Period. The end. 😎😎😎♥️♥️♥️
How about Nantucket red? And, related to burgandy, oxblood.
These colours are better suited to winter, they feel out of place in summer. Maybe with the exception of cream.
Navy
Camel
Cream
Grey
Forest Green
Burgundy
Add teal
This is basically a winter color pallet with a couple neutrals thrown on in like cream and beige/camel.
Amazing ❤❤❤❤
Translate these colors to your individual color season and you're fine. :-)
... imagine a true spring in muted colors or burgundy... lol
Burgundy is not a spring color.
I used to hate Navy Blue as it meant conformity to me in my younger life at work and school, however now without such constraints i really like Navy.
The colours of an ash blonde. Good. I am one.
Crazy that these are all my favorite colors. Maybe it's in the blood
Royals and people with money wear also colorful stuff and floral prints!
Makes for easy targets
😁
Dull colors on their own, they are useful as backdrops for bolder colors.
I like ALL these colors!! I fully expect my bank account to have 2 commas when I check it after this 😊
I wear black. It goes with everything
Thanks for the nice video!
My mom bought one *yutulu* and she loves it. It had been there for over 10 years when she went out with it.
I kinda wonder if the reason the ultra wealthy wear basic and muted colors is so they don’t attract notice & don’t get robbed. 😂😂
