    As promised, here is a video where I examine the themes explored in HBO's The Leftovers. This is one of the most thematically complicated shows I've ever seen and I definitely didn't get to everything. This video focuses on a couple of the central themes the show developed across its three seasons.

    9:06 it’s not that Kevin is a “man of faith”, it’s that he A: wants to go for a quick fix that might allow him to return to his relationship with Nora, and B: doesn’t want to be like his father from which he likely inherited the schizophrenia

    Nice analysis. I always felt that the Leftovers was a show about life's big unanswered questions and what people do to get the answers and some sort of meaning. It's one of these shows that people naturally hate, because it never gave in to an easy story telling, it actually went far and beyond to depict human nature as it is.

      Conspiracy theorists call this phenomenon 'Priming'. There are entities that want a desired outcome from the population but in order to have a less shocking effect the masses are prepared for it with entertainment media in forms of videogames and tv shows. I don’t think Nora went through. I want to believe her story, but I just can’t. She had been specifically told not to breathe in the metals so she was holding her breath and waiting. Then suddenly had a panicked look, opened her mouth, and it looked like she was about to scream, “Stop!” The only person who could have revealed the truth to us was Matt and he’s dead.
    If I came back from the other side my first stop would be to the scientists who sent me through so I could tell them what they’re doing is working and provide them that comfort. Obviously Nora was pretty traumatized at this point so I don’t blame her for not doing that. But I find it hard to believe that if they did have a machine on the other side that they sent her back in, that nobody else would pop back over and be like, “hey guys, we lived through the journey, also everyone who departed is alive, all is well👌” and that it wouldn’t become worldwide news.

    All the viewers trying to understand the departure. That is the exaxt point of the show. We see all kinds of people in the show trying to make sense of things that they don't understand, just like in you do in your comments. The point of the show is "things just happen. and people are always trying to make an explanation of that thing, no matter how ridicilous that explanation is.". What I understand is, none of the explanations at the show was real. Not miracles, not Messiahs, not parallel universes, not holy magazines none of them. Only real thing was the departure. The series wasn't trying to tell why the departure happened. It was telling how people can come up with crazy explanations and how people can get desperate when they try to make sense of things.

    There is one theory that Kevin Sr. did predict the end but misinterpreted how to save it. Kevin Jr.'s song when he was young was, "... out [of the Other Side] came the [son] and dried up all the rain" so Kevin's actions were what stopped the flood, not his father... if you believe the Other Side is real, of course.

    Wanted to chime in. The earthquake scene with the native americans was meant to reflect the departure. Sudden loss of family and grief. But then she ends up getting bit by a snake and dies anyway. Tragic irony or dark humor. Later an earthquake happens at that same spot but this time the earthquake saves Kevin's life who has just tried to commit suicide while sleepwalking. We get to see natural disasters that can kill and save. In the same location. Thousands of years apart. Also with Laurie. I don't think she was suicidal. It was just a way of creating suspense with her going scuba diving. Sure she could have. But in the end she does not. But the writers teased us with it. Anyways. Enjoyed this video.

      @@raymondsims7042 Then why did you keep watching past season 2? Because all of that nonsense you're about to pull is revisionist history. Season 2 is widely regarded as the best season of the show.
      The show didn't start getting negative reviews until season 3, when they were stalling the plot waiting for an end date for the show. And the show didn't get negative reviews again until the final season, culminating the series finale.

    I think the overarching theme is love. After the departure people are afraid to love again, afraid that if they do the person they love may also disappear. Throughout the series Kevin, Nora, Laurie, Jill, Tommy, Matt and John experience this. Each time Kevin enters the afterlife he confesses that he loves his family and doesn’t want to die, yet he keeps going back. He does love his family but he is also afraid of the pain that love may cause. The GR are the anti-love symbol within the show and preach that there is no family or attachment after the departure. However in the end, even though love causes the most pain its all we really have and Kevin and Nora are able to let go of their fear and find this with each other.

    • @ilfautdanser9121
      @ilfautdanser9121 5 лет назад +2

      the departure simply revealed what was already there. people have always been afraid to love. climbing mountains, building skyscrapers, inventing computers, etc, all much easier than truly allowing oneself to love and be loved. it is so scary because in order to do it we have to be our most vulnerable. love ALWAYS leads to loss of some sort and in modern times, so many of us have stopped reaching out to others. facebook is NOT friendship. texting is NOT real communication. i think this show is a wonderful essay on the state of our world. so much of what surrounds us is shallow and unreal and it's only by diving to our depths (good and bad) and being vulnerable that we find genuine love for ourselves and others, thus find meaning in life.

    Some have speculated that The Leftovers is about Faith. I agree but I'm going to channel some Yuval Harari...we humans invent stories...we invent myths in order to explain why things are happening. There is an element of Survivorship Bias...only the living get to make these stories and myths. The dead don't get a vote. These stories and myths try to explain what and why we are experiencing events. Usually a tragedy, catastrophe...or maybe why the cow died. Why the cow died can devolve into mere superstition.
    "Father, why do we sacrifice the goat."
    "Son, so the the rains will come."
    "Father, let's not sacrifice the goat and see if the rain will come."
    "Son, No, we can't risk it."
    We tell stories to comfort ourselves; to tell ourselves we understand how the world works. But we don't really know.

It looked like she was about to say the word 'Stop'. I mean that's how I would say it, if I want someone to stop immediately. I think she said the word during filming too, so the acting feels real, upto that point, even when their intention wasn't to show her saying the word.

    Why did Kevin keep dying ?

  • @seraphima_jayne
    @seraphima_jayne Год назад +2

    I just watched and finished this show for the first time after discovering that Christopher Eccleston was in it and I loved it. I'll admit it was odd hearing him use an American accent, and I wasn't crazy about his character at times (though Kevin was a tool too), but there were also times where I loved his Character because of his devotion to Mary.
    One of my favourite things about this show was how I felt like I could never quite figure out what was going on. I know some people don't like that because they want things spelled out for them, but I love a good mystery because I have a habit of figuring out the *surprises* of movies and shows rather quickly, which often makes them boring for me.
    This show not only kept the viewer guessing with multiple twists and turns, but it also left much of the show open to the viewer's interpretation by leaving many questions more or less ambiguous. My boyfriend found it "comfusing," but that was the best part for me.
    As the viewer, you could take this scene or that episode to mean one thing or another. This was a show that was telling a general story through the eyes of various characters and how they handled The Departure, and it gave us an "ending," but it was done in a way that gave the viewer *control* too, because of how open to interpretation many of the various stories can be taken.

      So the working theory I have from what I've picked up on from the series is that basically what happened was that reality inexplicably split into two copies. Essentially, if we take Nora at her word, the people who disappeared shifted into an identical world and had to deal with the same existential problems the characters in The Leftovers had to deal with in order to move on with their lives. Even though it is not directly stated, for the people in this "second" split reality, they probably perceive their reality as the correct reality and the people in Kevin and Nora's reality as having departed from them in the same way the people left in Kevin and Nora's reality view them as the ones who have departed. It seems like a singular, unified reality split into two separate but equal realities and both realities arbitrarily divided humanity within them. This split within reality is essentially a symbol that the show uses for the Absurdity of the world and of course absurdity has no explaination so naturally there is no real reason behind reality dividing up humanity in the manner it did. It is just a hyperbolized symbol for all the absurd things that happen in the universe that we don't have a proper explaination for.

    To me it seems as if they were all existing in a simulated universe, very similar to a combination of the Sims and Second Life. Their world is a diverse mixture of characters, some autonomous, some NPCs programs, and possibly participants from 'our reality' immersed in the simulation. You had cowboys hanging out with Buddhist monks, nuns mingling with pagan revelers, cops milling about the town dealing with circus clowns, party people and a variety of animals. Strange, random events occurring, changes in the environment and landscape. People who were supposedly dead or killed, RESPAWNING multiple times, some of which had different personalities and memories.
    A glitch in the matrix or a moderator/programmer altering the parameters of the simulation at will perhaps? Think about the scene in the after life purgatory hotel, where Kevin had to CHOOSE a set of clothing in a closet that would determine what his role would be in THAT simulation, that is straight out of the gaming world, like GTA.

    the new model for TV serials is to never resolve anything or give true arc to characters. They reach some pinnacle of mystery and then its just left there as if a skipping record. People watch and watch, and ratings go up and up as a group of mind numb humans wait patiently for all matters to be answered. On and on we go.

    • @slaughteredwolf
      @slaughteredwolf 5 лет назад +5

      John Goodell Sometimes ambiguities are meaningful. They allow the viewer to analyze and interpret things through the lens of their own life and experiences. While there are definitely shows that need a conclusive ending without the endless mysteries, in my opinion The Leftovers is not that show. The mystery is what makes this show so incredible.

    you started the video really well, but then your ideas are spawned randomly and I can't follow your logic to form any clear idea or analysis that goes deeper than what's plainly on the surface.
    I don't mean to be harsh, take this constructively. Your analysis of the first scene was interesting, but from there you're trying to analyse an entire show and you get lost. Instead, analyse something specific, one episode, on story arc, you did that well.
    Also, your editing in general needs to be more precise, it's especially apparent on the sound channel, but also the video itself
