    In 1989-1990 I survived nursing school because of Rowan atkinson, hugh laurie and comedy. Now having had to retire early as a nurse this show helps me to remind me " of who I used to be" comedy isn't necessary--- it's mandatory.

      Absolutely! The comedy lands in this show in a different way than most. Laurie's established comedy history only makes it better, too.... And of course Mr. Bean is some of the best physical comedy ever made!

      I therefore recommend _The Tall Guy._ Atkinson plays an unpleasant version of himself against Jeff Goldblum as his sidekick and Emma Thompson as a nurse. Based on a book by one of Atkinson's actual sidekicks, a kind of revenge fantasy. So if Atkinson can play a bad himself, does this undercut the text?

    house has a 10 on existential, he has spent more time pondering those questions than anyone we see in the show, and he makes it completely obvious just how much he has thought about it.

    • @ChristoferKelly
      @ChristoferKelly 2 месяца назад +6

      Completely agree. It was evident from the narrator's analysis of the existential that he was conflating _existentialism_ with _spiritualism,_ even though the infographic displayed a clear description of what existentialism entails: tackling questions pertaining to life and death (which could be extended to including _living_ and _dying_ as well). This video's introduction heavily features scenes with Eve from an episode that is underscored by existentialism both within and outwith the context of abortion (4:04).
      This isn't the only instance where the narrator's analysis hasn't probed House's character any further than skin-deep. Characterising House through archetypes was done very superficially: *the jester* describes who House, himself, wishes to be perceived as by those around him, but is very much a façade used to disguise someone who is otherwise extremely tortured, nihilistic, and burdened with constant physical and existential pain. Similarly, the deliberation over his tendency towards *extraversion* vs *introversion* (spelled wrongly in the video) was fraught with uncertainty, mostly from conflating extraversion with _sociability,_ _being the centre of attention,_ and _being loud,_ but additionally from more surface-level observation of the character that leads to the narrator concluding House to _"love being the centre of attention"_ and to _"love talking."_ House is categorically and unambiguously introverted, and instances of him being loud or attention-seeking aren't contrary to this (although, he's generally not at all loud and generally dislikes attention, which is clear by how he enters unfamiliar situations by observing the people present and their dynamics). House gets irked by the need to explain things to people, because talking is an expenditure of energy he'd rather not have to indulge. House prefers the company of very few people he knows well and trusts rather than the company of many people he knows superficially.
      Also worth bearing in mind that, while the Big 5 personality traits (openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism) is a good (evidenced, clinically-validated, demonstrably useful) tool for evaluating personality traits, the Meyers-Briggs model has been repeatedly debunked and clinically invalidated. This is how Elon Musk mysteriously ends up in a list alongside Gregory House, Walter White, and Michelle Obama.

    I relate to House a lot except for the drowning of sadness through addiction. From my years of counseling and facing depression, anxiety, and PTSD, I found it is very important to feel your emotions, understand why you are feeling those emotions, and acknowledge/accept them.
    Trust me I have won over five counselors.
    My first counselor was so overwhelmed when I detailed everything on the topics of emotions, the root causes of them, and the ways I have dealt with them.
    I even explained it calmly. She ended up waving the white flag and stated she felt that she might be unable to handle my problems and referred me to another counselor.

    Hey, at 14:50 you said the baraku was a healer, and you said you were confused about his position as a doctor and a janitor. A Barakumin is a class of peoples considered as outcasts, untouchables, and are the members of the lowest rung of traditional Japanese society. I always thought he was the best doctor in the hospital, but because he was a barakumin no hospital would give him the position of a doctor. So, the higher class doctors would have to go to this low class person and humiliate themselves by asking him for help, which I believe is why House found it so memorable. It didn't matter that he was a class of people most of those doctors wouldn't even spit on, it didn't matter if he was only a janitor. He was right, and that's all that mattered when those doctors would have to go to him.

    One correction: HOUSE does not use his cane with the wrong leg. I know this because I use a cane primarily to relieve some of the pressure off of my chronic and debilitating (also a mystery) foot pain. We know that HOUSE can walk although with a pronounced limp without using his cane in his home. I do not use my cane when around my house but whenever I'm walking a distance and I do not have opportunity to sit down frequently. In my case both my feet hurt almost equally but my left one can be a bit worse sometimes. I use my cane on my right side with my right hand... I cannot get into a rhythm with my left hand for some reason, it's like trying to do anything with your non dominant hand - which is my left. But technically having the cane on the right for me is better for me anyway because my cane and left foot are on the ground at the same time.
    I also use the cane for some balance as well as I'm prone to rolling ankles due to severely weak ankles and using my stronger hand/arm keeps me more stable.
    Some people may point to a scene where Wilson or a dog have damaged House's cane and he falls when his cane fails as proof that he cannot stay upright without it... I say thats wrong. Even if a completely able bodied person were to walk with a cane (for acting or for fashion) and if the cane were to suddenly hit ice, they would fall because your center of gravity changes slightly and sudden momentum will throw anyone off balance.
    House uses his cane for the same reasons I do and it's as needed, as best fits us.

    • @somewhereinthemiddle6534
      @somewhereinthemiddle6534  Год назад +16

      Haha thanks for watching :) I know from a clinical standpoint, the proper use of a cane involves supporting the opposite side of the injured or weak leg. So, if House had a right leg injury, he should use the cane to support his left side for better balance and weight distribution. Him doing it incorrectly is more to demonstrate he doesn't do things by the book, the most efficiently, and hates following rules. He doesn't care that it's wrong and is probably hurting his good leg. I think there's even an instance in the show where someone points out it's wrong (like a non-main character, can't remember).
      Trust me I did PLENTY of research on this before posting lol. The below link is the orthopedic college of surgeons information on it:
      orthoinfo.aaos.org/en/recovery/how-to-use-crutches-canes-and-walkers/
      Obviously each individual has different needs and I'm not a doctor lol but the medical community recognizes that House is doing it the WRONG way.

    You claim House isn’t neurotic, yet I feel he fits the criteria quite well. He’s not raging all the time, he uses sarcastic & outspoken quips to hide his feelings as well as numb himself, much like his Vicodin. He’s constantly over analyzing everything: his patients, his colleagues, the people surrounding the cases… and he knows how he’s perceived. He hates people praising him for being as smart as he is unless he’s super close to them (Cuddy & Wilson, respectively). Much like other with neurodivergent conditions (and House screams ND of some form to me, but it could be him just being an addict too), he masks his true feelings a lot because when he does get close, it hurts him more than he ever lets on. That’s what makes the SA patient rough to deal with. That’s what makes Kuttner’s death hit so hard. That’s what makes him never want to lose his friendship with Wilson, as they have a true plutonic bond. When he no longer has his pain, he’s scared cause he can’t use it for an excuse to take pain meds or mask himself away as easily. He’s a waking ball of emotions, he just can’t always let them out how he wants to or knows better to try his best to reel them in.

    • @somewhereinthemiddle6534
      @somewhereinthemiddle6534  Год назад +14

      Yeah you know, upon thinking about this...I actually think you bring up excellent points. House doesn't seem like a typical neurotic person - but he is controlled by his negative emotions more than it would seem. All his bad decision making is fueled by a deeply seeded insecurity and being lost in the world. I think when you think of neurotic characters like George from Seinfeld - they're more overtly 'over the top upset' about small things. But you're correct - House is probably way more neurotic than average. I'll have to make some changes in future episodes : )

    I wonder if House’s lack of spirituality and belief in an afterlife doesn’t equate to low intelligence in that category. He’s very well reasoned and clearly thoughtful in his beliefs. I think his lack of interpersonal intelligence might be poisoning the well with that one.

    • @somewhereinthemiddle6534
      @somewhereinthemiddle6534  2 месяца назад +1

      Agreed. It doesn't mean he's 'stupid' in that regard, it's that he's closed off, stubborn, and unable to be conscientious and think of other view points. Intelligence isn't just 'knowledge' or 'being quick'. It's being flexible, understanding, being able to understand other people's reasoning. House while he very well maybe RIGHT, doesn't mean he's as gifted in this realm as others. "Oh you believe in God? You're dumb." Yes, he's being sarcastic, but at the same time he's limiting himself but completely closing that door and not being able to be aware of even his own spirituality.

    • @62sy
      @62sy Месяц назад

      @@somewhereinthemiddle6534intelligence is a loose concept. It can be anything you want… being stubborn and closed off is arguably an intelligent trait.
      People who don’t cave to social pressure and remain firm, knowing that they are factually right are arguably more intelligent than those who easily submit themselves to the popular opinion.
      But it can also be the opposite. It’s not really a meaningful thing to say one way or the other.
      Believing in god for many people is no different from Alex jones saying “they are turning the frogs gay”. There’s no evidence. No factual basis… just willful desire for something to be true because it fits their world view.
      Closing door on god is no different from closing the door on things like Giants, the moon being a dome projection created by the government or lizard people.
      There’s no more evidence for god than there is evidence for those ABSURD things. But most of us would laugh and call those people stupid.
      You saying house is closed off… while closing yourself off from his perspective is hypocritical.
      Besides, doesn’t that work both ways? Isn’t every religious person intellectually closed off because they refuse to acknowledge that god may not exist… afterall, wavering in your faith is considered a sin in the Bible. Several passages state as much. Wavering or being opened minded is against the teachings of the Bible.
      Similarly Quran states that you mustnt die as anything else except as a Muslim. And one should fear if he does not do so…
      If you are in the middle… you are not out a Muslim or a Christian.
      My point being: you can’t grade this on a scale. There are no rules. This isn’t a spectrum. It is ENTIRELY arbitrary. There is no measurable thing called: “existential intelligence”
      Existentialism itself is VERY arbitrary and loosely interpreted. It can go in ANY way. Existential nihilism… is an existential belief. Yet it completely disavows the possibility of objective meaning using existentialist arguments.
      How do we grade that?

    I really liked this show and they did very well with dialogue, character development and realism. Relativity. A series called "The Good Doctor" tried this and failed pretty bad. I don't think anyone has tried it since, but I wish they would. At least that show tried, but doing very flawed characters is hard without making them incredibly annoying. Especially if they are supposed to be a protagonist

    • @somewhereinthemiddle6534

      Good doctor had a great start and interesting premise which I loved, but has definitely fallen victim to the "risque hospital drama" trope so many similar shows do that seems to pander to audiences. House never had this problem at all and that's why it's so unique.

    it's fun to speculate, but it's funny that in actuality house would get none of those personality test results. he would think they're stupid, and would give false answers if forced to take one

    • @somewhereinthemiddle6534
      @somewhereinthemiddle6534  3 месяца назад

      Oh totally. He would insult the validity or use of the test, never sit down to take it, and somehow if he did, be deceitful every chance he got and tank the scores. This is all hypothetical. We can think of these fake scores as if someone put a gun to his head saying they'd kill Wilson if he didn't answer honestly. Even then he probably wouldn't lol

    The main issue with characters based on Sherlock, including house is that alot of the observations and conclusions made by them are never foreshadowed to the audience, the plot becomes a series of eureka moments half the time where some obscure piece of information is revealed last minute, after the character has come to their correct conclusion.
    This makes the characters come off as geniuses when observed at a surface level, but when broken down the plots are hairbrained and are based on shockvalue than a carefully put together mystery for the audience.

    The suicide episode really hit deep. I think as we grow older, we would experience that feelling at some point sadly. Already two friends i went to school with took their lives. It just leaves wondering, thinking, coming up with "solutions" too late. We're stuck with this unanswered questions, why? and "could i have helped? prevented it." we dont really get closure. its like we MUST figure out why in order to not repeat the same mistake.
    But what i love about the show, is that House, the guys who notices EVERYTHING, didnt see this coming. it eats at him because hes "supposed to" notice these things, its what he does. and yet he couldnt save the life of his colleague, and it bothers him that he failed. going as far as denying he even killed himself. and even I as a viewer was starting to go along with his theory, also denying that kutner couldve done that. But all it takes is ONE bad day. ONE bad week. ONE bad month. ONE bad year. some people feel their whole lives have been bad...

    • @somewhereinthemiddle6534
      @somewhereinthemiddle6534  2 месяца назад

      Right! That's definitely what I love too. No one is perfect, not even him. The man that sees all missed something right in front of his eyes. And of course, suicide and ideation and warning signs aren't always there - which is unfortunately how life is. Great writing and great episode. Some of the must gut punching tv i've ever seen

    The most depressing thing about that suicide episode is that House is correct. There's no such thing as a person who commits suicide without warning. It's only self-interested douchebags comforting themselves by pretending there was nothing they did wrong.

    House doesn’t avoid patients because he doesn’t care. He avoids them because, once attached, he cares too much, and he knows he can be hurt again when something bad happens.
    Eg The victim at the start.
    Eg He never acts like a callous dickhead to children.
    Eg Thirteen - it started with the mystery of her illness, but ended with him being so attached he would do …. Well iykyk.
    When you’re young and optimistic, you marvel at how cold cynics are.
    As you get older, and learn more about human nature, you realise that most cynics are former optimists that were let down & hurt too many times.

That Chainsaw for his lopped arm from that " Evil Dead" spoof or perhaps not the correct name. That movie, a true Cult Classic! I don't remember another show that used the Main character narrative quite so effectively over the years ? Light hearted was the best description for the show's vibe 100%! Bruce Campbell has his own Cult following established. I don't recall his most recent Series after Burn Notice,but he is a Vampire Killer - of course,lol, it's pretty funny as well.Maybe it's the continuation,or wrap up of his Evil Dead Movie, likely. Wait until you reach the final Season 7 finale, it's one of the best I've ever. Thanks for the videos .I have just recently went back over the great Hi house Series. 47:36 this method of determining a person's personality has been long refuted and is acknowledged to be varifiably inaccurate, psychologists now prefer a test known as The Big 5 which measures ones Agreeableness, Neuroticism, Extraversion, Conscientiousness, and Openness to which House would score low levels on many of them
