Like most of the circuits on a vintage Honda motorcycle, the ignition system circuit is incredibly simple. With basic knowledge of the circuit and test light, you can diagnose issues and fix them to keep cruising down the road. In this article, we are going to help you understand the basics of the factory Honda ignition system wiring and how to individually test each component to discover what is at fault and what works as it should.

Common Motor Collective are my go-to channel on anything involving my classic Honda’s - clear, great filming so that I can see what we’re looking at and they talk out loud about what goes into their diagnosis and trouble shooting thinking. The Gold Standard- Thanks guys!

I've been rebuilding bikes in my spare time since the late 1980's and I've never seen this process explained so clearly and thoroughly. My bike mentor and guru back then was a great mechanic and man named David Brigham Young (Salt Lake City) and I always wished there was some way to capture and share his knowledge with the bike world. I feel like you guys are accomplishing that work. Thank you.

Great explanation of the ignition system… Thank you! 🙏🏻 I have a 1975 CB400 Four that’s been upgraded to an electronic points system. Would this video apply to it as well? Thanks in advance.

I'm probably a bit stupid at the moment. But where do I get the +6V to the coil on my XL250 1973?
No spark, and I can't find out why. Coil works and spark plug's new.
The bike did run TO the MOT, during the MOT....but not on the way home, and not since.

What happens when you have power coming off your points all the time? My test light doesn’t shut off when the points open and close.

    Hello B......
Can a universal coil with the specifications of a CB350/400/450/500/550 HONDAs be compatible with the HONDA CM200T TWINSTAR?????

I have yet to start my bike. Almost there. I’m setting points and testing the electrical system. My ignition switch has 3 settings. Is this similar to the kill switch (off/on/off)? Dumb question but double checking

As I understand it, thatbos commonly off/ run/ and thr last position can be a sort of "standing/parking mode" where the lights are on while the bike is stopped.
Something about being safer if you're pulled off on the shoulder of a road because then at least cars can see your taillights and such.

Well I went through this whole process and I didn’t get spark when I hit the kick starter. Now I’m lost in the sauce.
