Derby Pie-A tradition in the Bluegrass State for the Kentucky Derby - It’s easy and great all year!

- Derby Pie
1/2 cup melted butter
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
3/4 cup chopped pecans
3/4 cup chocolate chips
9 inch pie crust
Preheat the oven to 350°. Lightly spray a 9-inch pie plate with nonstick spray. Roll out your pie crust just to the size that fits in the pie plate. Fit crust into pie plate and set aside.
Mix the butter, sugar, all-purpose flour, eggs, and vanilla. Fold in the nuts and chocolate chips. Pour into an unbaked 9 inch pie crust. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes or until brown. Do NOT over bake.

Secretariat was buried at Claiborne Farm. In his entirety. The horse cemetery is a place you can’t miss. Old Friends Equine and Our Mims Retirement Haven are two other places not to be missed. Lanes End has VERY FEW dates where you can visit with Zenyatta. Truthfully the sooner you set that up the better your odds for seeing her.
Most farms you have to set tours via horse country…it’s a bluegrass thing. Old Friends now charges 30 dollars for each person to tour. And I’m sure others also charge now. For Old Friends that money goes straight back to the horses.
I've watched the movie about Secretariat so many times I can tell you what their lines are at times. I loved that movie. I also would love to see Secretariats grave. He was so beautiful.

My Mother made the best pie crusts. But after she discovered the Pillsbury pie crusts, she never made a pie crust again! That they were just as good as her homemade crusts and much easier@

I’ve had Derby pie but I’ve never made one. My husband and I use to do all of Gainesway Farms heating and air conditioning work. We drove by the barn where Tapit was housed. His son 😁American Pharoah won the Derby. I must say Tapit wasn’t that good looking. American Pharoah looked like his momma 😂. This pie will have to wait because I’m making another one of your key lime pies and I’m going to make a lemon one made just like it with fresh squeezed lemon juice. I think the last Derby Pie recipe I read had bourbon in it, and we don’t like the taste of bourbon! So I didn’t even save the recipe! Ha! We are non-drinkers but do occasionally use wine in cooking. Anyway, you’ve convinced me! I’ve got to make this pie! Ha! It looks absolutely delicious!

Never had another apple pie from my wife ,but my friends new the story and they always hhad apple pie for me. All kidding aside, my wife was a great cook! You two just make my heart smile. I love how cute you are in the kitchen. I’ve always wished my husband would enjoy coming in the kitchen with me experimenting and cooking up great recipes but he absolutely wants no part of it. The kitchen is my happy spot 😊. During the days I went through chemo we about starved because all he knew how to do was open a can of soup and microwave it. Now I’m doing good and try to gently nudge him to come help me but he’s just not interested lol.
I've never had a Derby Pie but I would definitely like to try it. I grew up eating Chess Pie which is my favorite to this day.

Pie looks delicious. I love the Kentucky Derby. My husband used to drive an 18 wheel truck to Churchill Downs and pick up straw that had been used by the horses. He would then bring it here in Tennessee to the mushroom farm for use there. He retired but loved that run every day.

This pie is a change from the bourbon pecan pie that usually gets served around this time of year it looks good too
A few viewers have told us they add 1-2 teaspoons of bourbon to this recipe. We enjoy it without but some people like to kick it up a notch! Either way it's just perfect for today! Happy Derby Day!

I did make this pie, and it was delicious. ..Besides the recipe, I learned that mixing flour in the chocolate chips and the nuts works beautifully to keep the chips and nits from clumping in the pie. I watched another video with that recipe having no flour into them When the cook cut the pie, there was a layer of choc, a layer of nuts, and a layer of sweet.
Ours was much prettier. ❤

I love the baking tips re: letting the pie crust just fall into place and dusting the chips and pecans. (I’ve actually had chips settle to the bottom of a recipe before.)
My Mom loved the " greatest 2 minutes in sports!" And so, I watch it every year in her honor. And now I love it too! I don't bet on the horses, but my favorites this year are Sierra Leone, Domestic Product, Fierceness, and Just a touch. Did you know this year the horses are connected to Ottbs( off track thorough breds) aftercare? One I'm interested in is Horse and Hound. If Domestic Product comes in 1, 2 or 3 they will win money to look after the horses. If he doesn't come in, they still get $5K. All 20 horses have a rescue they are running for.
My Mom would have loved this pie, and my husband WILL love it, when I make it for him tomorrow!

I made two derby pies last week and shared some with co-workers who have never had one. Your recipe is like mine except I use half white and half brown sugar. Some times I use walnuts and 1-2 tablespoons of Kentucky bourbon adds a good note.
It's great to be able to share food with people who have never had the dish. This pie is always a big hit! Happy Derby Day!

You can absolutely use walnuts. We just happen to prefer pecans.
