    Very cool and very well laid out presentation, Andy. At first the idea of explosives to take the bridge apart was push aside. But using charges like these seems to make perfect sense. Hope you'll be able to capture the process.

    Welcome back Captain Andy. Thank you for your report. Hey, if you look at the larger section of bridge leaning on the Dali, you will see some black looking occlusions across several of the the beams. I think that's where charges are already placed, wrapped and ready to go. Need somebody with a good camera to zoom in over there, (hint, hint).

    Hey Andy, back at you from Charleston. When they dropped the old Grace and Pearman bridges in Charleston harbor, they tried shaped cutting charges several times before giving up. The problem isn't or wasn't with the charges mostly but the sheer number of charges and trying to get them all to go off at the same time. Out of the many they were trying to attemp to ignite at the same time numerous failed to ignite and were still there afterwards. The bridge section was mostly dropped and cut but the danger presented by the missfires caused much delay for obvious safety reasons as an EOD guy had to go under and find the missfires. Hope it works better here.

    Thank you, as always, for the great video. When you look at it, it’s an excellent approach. To continue with piece by piece removal of the mostly intact bridge trusses on the port side of the DALI would require supporting the whole structure with falsework and/or a flotilla of barges and floating cranes to avoid having the structure collapse on top of the demolition workers when they had cut away a critical amount.

    These are shape changes that look like 1-2” copper angle with RDX sandwiched inside. Non ells eliminate the use of detonating chord so the vibration in minimal. I’ve been involved with 10-15 bridge demolitions using these.

    They are going to be using Linear Shape Charges (LSC) which are a little different from what you are showing. They are copper clad which is a problem because the copper turns into shrapnel and can fly thousands of feet away. They used shape charges to demolish a power station in Kern, California. There was a guy standing a quarter mile away and the shrapnel cut his leg off. You can Google it. Make sure you are behind something when it's detonated.

    My guess is they will do all the charges as they can because the pieces after the cuts will likely be unstable if they hang up. All the pieces need to fall away from DALI or at least straight down. It will take the most time to set everything up and seconds to initiate. The DALI crew can go to the engine room for safety.

    Jan 15, 2019 --- there's lots of videos of NY's Tappan Zee bridge being removed with "shaped charges". Most of that bridge was removed by the LEFT COAST LIFTER crane-- but one large truss span could not be safely picked by a crane -- so they used shape charges instead.

  • @tomessary4099
    @tomessary4099 Месяц назад +2

    Wow! Sorry, this bridge was not near Tishomingo, OK! It did however look identical. There are dozens of these old steel frame over bridges being replaced in OK. The one south of Tishomingo was almost washed away in a flood. Others are replaced before a rode is shutdown and the old bridge is used throughout the replacement. Thanks for the great explanation. The cone and v shaped charge basically melts the copper lining the cone or v and focuses the molten jet at HIGH speed to burn through the “subject” material.

    • @45KevinR
      @45KevinR Месяц назад +1

      Agreed, because otherwise any full cut made would destabilise the entire truss.
      On the other side they've used 533 and now chessapeak to hold an end section while they cut it off. The difference being that the starboard truss is resting mostly on the bottom & other wreckage. At least half the length of the port truss is supported by the ship. Part cut it would bend move and shift, and to hold it you'd need far bigger than 1000t capacity.
      The governor has mentioned precision cutting multiple times, but has avoided the explosive word. That does suggest more Michael Bay in the popular mind.
