  • This video is about installing a swing-down edge guide on a Cowboy CB-4500 sewing machine.
    The steps shown will also work on other Juki TSC-441 clones that lack the pre-drilled and tapped mounting holes on the back of the machine head.
    Since the Cowboy CB-4500 lacks the mounting holes required to install the swing-down edge guide, you have to drill and tap holes. You also have to make an extended hand lever for manual foot lift operation (or you can just remove the manual lever and only use the foot pedal only for presser foot lift.)
    Parts used in this video:
    KG-967 swing-down edge guide
    KB-205 adapter bracket
    I've sourced my own edge guide directly from a manufacturer. It is available in my webstore:

    That took guts to just drill into your sewing machine, I'm going to have to do this to my pfaff 545 H3.

      I have a Pfaff 545 also, was wondering if you attempted to drill the holes to install this guide? If so, how did it work out?

      @@nileshladd I did drill two holes with a drill press to keep things straight, I taped them but had to order the tap because it was a metric thread I didn't have. I didn't use the adapter they are installing here but just the guide assembly, it turned out good.

    I had ordered the guide in early 2019, just got the handle extension from Uwe Gross a month ago.
    Put it all together yesterday (April 7th 2021)

    As usual the visuals are top quality. May I suggest that it is preferable to use a center punch or center drill to start the hole so the larger bit doesn't walk on the user? I see you're very careful to prevent this but it may not be obvious or within the skills of all users. Some masking tape can be applied to the drillbit as a depth guide. Finally, the quality of the tapped threads will be significantly improved using oil on the tap. I prefer to use a hand tap like you have and finish it with a bottoming tap. Can of compressed air can clear the metal dust out of the hole too.

      Thanks for the pointers, they're all valid I think. I actually used a DeWalt PilotPoint drill bit (www.homedepot.com/p/DEWALT-Titanium-Pilot-Point-Drill-Bit-Set-14-Piece-DW1354/202019930) which has a tiny pre-drill tip that keeps the bit from wandering as you start the hole. The precise depth of the hole is not critical. It just needs to be deep enough to provide about 1/4" of full M6 threads for the screw. Using a fancy bottoming tap would allow you to drill a more shallow hole. I decided to keep it cheap and simple for this demo video.

      I agree, simple has the highest chance of reader success. Starting with a small 1/8 or 3/32 bit can be as effective for those using standard twist drills.

    Good practice to punch the hole centre with a pointed punch, then start drilling with a small drill bit, in this case, 1/16 inches or 2mm would have provided a better, more accurate hole placement then you drill with slightly bigger, and then the final size for the thread tap... starting with the bigger drill may cause wandering around the punch mark, screw up hole placement accuracy and you may end up with a bigger hole diameter than the drill size ...you can only drill in the machine casing once!

    Does the iron powder not enter the machine?

    • @UweXY
      @UweXY  5 лет назад +1

      Not really. Just cover the arm below. The holes are drilled into solid cast iron. You're not drilling into open interior spaces.
