Nailed it. I have sand blowing into the pool, I replaced the top valve assembly but was concerned that the lateral was the real problem. I will do the sand replacement even though it is only 3 years old, make sense I think. I hope I haven't plugged up some of the tubes for the heater.
I have a 16 foot, 42 inches deep round, above ground pool and it turned green a week ago. Today, I added two gallons of Wamart's Chlorine from the pool area at $5.69, and 6 hours later, it turned baby blue! I removed bugs and leaves and other small debri and now my pool is now clean. Easy. Tomorrow, I will clean the filter and go swimming!
Love your tutorials. Used this video to change my on sand about a month ago because I was getting sand in pool. I inspected laterals and saw no cracking or breaks but I’m still getting sand. Any suggestions. I might mention that I’m having to manually vac to waste because vacuum is broke at the moment and just vacuumed yesterday and today theres noticeable sand. Thanks
If you have filter sand in the pool it will only be on the floor by the returns (jets). If what you are describing is all over the floor of the pool, this is more than likely mustard algae. Mustard algae looks like sand and you will have to treat, kill and vacuum to waste, if not it will keep coming back. If you have sand on the floor below the jets only, then you will have to open the filter and remove the sand and inspect the lateral assembly again. Thanks for watching.
Good content. Plan on changing my sand out soon and this is good information. Question? What cause back pressure that when you turn off the pump it cause water to blow up through the screen basket.
Thank you. I bought tech mix pool filter sand last spring. I got sand in my pool. Just inspected laterals. Everything looks perfect. I don't remember having this prob B4. Are all pool filter sands equal? It doesn't say #20, just pool filter sand
Most all filter sand is # 20 silica, there may be other grades but if it is labeled pool filter sand you should be fine. If you have inspected the laterals and the assembly and everything is good then you may be dealing with mustard algae. If this is all over the pool, it’s more than likely dead algae which looks like sand. If it is sand it will accumulate at the base of the returns only. Thanks for watching.
Bought new Hayward S180T model last summer, worked great! This year not sure what happened but found sand in our new pump skimmer. Replacing sand, checked lateral assembly all looks good but my husband seems to think the assembly pipe is too short?? Should it be jammed into the top or space between pipe and valve??
Thanks for another great video. If you change sand to Glass media like Dr Dryden or Filter Balls would a broken assembly be as much of an issues since there is no sand? Also can you use Glass media and Filter balls together?
@@burlingwoodau7277 If you have a good break in the laterals, glass can be an issue. I have heard of people mixing glass media with filter balls however neither media is as fine as sand. Thanks for watching.
Hi Mark, thank you so much for your very precised and well explained videos. Just got my first pool and it helps a lot. I have a Jaccuzi sand filter. I watched your video where you show each position of the level. When I'm doing a backwash for 1 minute than a rinse for 30 seconds and put it back to filter switching off the pump in between each steps and turning the level clockwise, I'm always having some water continuing to leak down the waste drain when back to filter. What could be the cause? Thank you in advance!
In the filter position, you should not have water leaking out of the waste line. You will have to check your multiport, inside the valve the key assembly may not be seated properly and needs to be repaired or replaced. You need to also check the gasket, if damaged or wore, then replace. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the excellent video. I'm in the middle of replacing my filter sand and noticed two hairline cracks at the top edge of the standpipe running about an inch down from the top. Never had any problems to this point, so I'm wondering if I should let alone. Is the standpipe replaceable, or do I need to purchase the entire assembly? Would a little PVC glue along the cracks (on the inside of the pipe) offer some stability?
You should be fine if the hair line crack is at the end of the Stand pipe by only one inch. This part of the stand pipe is inserted into the underside of the valve and is not exposed. If the crack extends down from the valve and is exposed then you will need to replace the assembly. In time this will get worse and you will have to replace the assembly. Thanks for watching.
I do not have a video on a side mount filter that pertains to the lateral assembly. The assembly is similar but is much harder to inspect. The lateral assembly can be removed but you have to remove the two side screws on the lower elbow assembly inside the tank. Thanks for watching.
Hey Mark. I love your channel. I was changing out my sand yesterday and when I loosened the multiport, the pipe on the lateral assembly did not disengage. I sprayed some lubricant on it but it's not budging. I have a Pentair SD40. I was still able to vacuum most of the sand out except for right at the center floor, where the assemble is supposed to sit. Do you have any tricks or recommendations for this? Thanks. Paul
You should be able to remove the standpipe from the multiport valve. Wiggle the pipe or use a pair of channel locks but be careful. Once you have removed the standpipe you can lightly sand and lube the end of the standpipe. You can also lube the underside of the valve where the standpipe goes in. This will allow the standpipe to go back in easily, and it will also help in the removal of the standpipe down the road. Thanks for watching.
@@HallmarkPoolSupplies: Hey Mark! The channel locks worked great and I was able to get the pipe off and changed out the sand. I also lubed up both of the pieces for easier access next time out. Thanks again. Paul
I gotta say that Leslies told me the sand was due to my sand being too old. So i changed all the sand, inspected my laterals, and they didnt seem damaged, so put in new sand and rehooked everything up. Pretty sure im still getting sand through the jets. So perhaps i need to take the laterals out again and to Leslies for inspection? Such a massive pain in the ass. What's the best way to get the sand out of the pool once it's on the bottom? An external vacuum?
Is it normal to have some sand in the bottom of a pool after sand change? I had none last year, and changed the sand at the beginning of the season this year (about 2 weeks ago), and there's a little building up in spots at the bottom. I have no sightglass, backwash to a storm drain, and my laterals are fixed, not hinged- so I couldn't get the assembly out for a thorough inspection. Everything seemed ok, as far as I could tell. Thanks

Hi, we had our assembly just replaced and new sand added but we are still getting sand. Any ideas what could be causing it? Also, we have the exact same filter. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Good evening Mark, I recently swapped out the sand in my sand filter. My sand filter takes six bags; however, I put in seven bags. I'm unsure if this is the reason, but I have since found sand in the pool's slimmer basket. Also, my Pool Pump keeps overflowing; the lid loosens and causes water to spill out. Please reply when you can regarding what could be causing this issue. Thank you, and stay safe!
You need to put the right amount of sand in the filter, overfilling is not good. Try removing the extra sand then backwash and rinse the filter. Make sure the pump lid and o-ring are in good condition. Lubricating the o-ring helps, makes for a better seal and easier lid removal. You want to tighten the lid hand tight so you have an air tight seal. Thanks for watching.
When I back wash the filter I get sand in the pool. Do I haft to wait awhile to continue filtering to avoid the sane in pool? Or is the problem covered in this video. Much thanks
After backwashing you should not get sand in the pool. Try backwashing more than once to see if this helps, if not then you may need to change your sand and check your lateral assembly for damage. This is covered in the video. Thanks for watching.
You need to check your lateral assembly. If you need any parts l have linked all the parts for this filter down below in the description of the video. Thanks for watching.
Here in the UK we mostly have Lacron filters. I have a 24 inch Lacron and want to try and change the laterals. Do you know how as I don’t think it is the same?! Thanks! Dave
Lacron filters have laterals just like the sand filter in the video but the parts are different. I would contact the manufacturer for parts. Thanks for watching.
We accidentally pulled the lateral assembly out of the sand and water when trying to put it together. Do we need so start over or is it safe to push the lateral assembly back down to the bottom?
The lateral assembly needs to be at the bottom of the filter. In order to get the assembly in place you will have to remove the sand and start over. Thanks for watching.
On most filters there is a notch at the bottom of the filter to set the lateral assembly. Once in place, hold the lateral assembly down while pouring in the sand.
For the S240 filter you would just replace the laterals (old style threaded), they come in a 10 pack. Here is the link if you need them. hallmarkpoolsupplies.com/p-16270-sx240dpak10-10set.aspx
I have a S244 top mount older Hayward filter. I replaced the laterals and the center tube and refilled with sand.I am now getting sand in the pool. I noticed the old center pipe had an adhesive that was on the pipe where I goes into the lateral assembly but I was told I did not need to cement the pipe to the assembly. The pipe does not fit snuggly on the lateral assembly. Could this cause sand to get in the pool?
Yes, however the stand pipe on the lateral assembly from Hayward is factory glued and sealed. The top of the lateral assembly which goes into the multiport is not. If your stand pipe is loose in the assembly then you will have an issue. Thanks for watching.
After replacing the laterals because of crack, and the head because of other damage and a flattened gasket. Is it normal to still have some sand in the pool while it works its way out of the lines or should it disappear pretty quickly?
Thank for your videos. I just got the same filter for my salt pool. Is brand new and it blows about a cup of sand after each backwash. I open the filter and the laterals are in perfect condition and the multi port valve gasket looks good. Any other reasons to why my filter is doing this...?
If to much sand was put into the filter, then this could be the problem. The sand can keep coming out until it self levels. If you put the correct amount of sand in the filter then you should be okay. If down the road this keeps happening then you will have to open the filter and inspect it again.
How much sand is too much? I always see sand on my step under the return jet in the pool. I vacuum in the morning and by afternoon, I see gritty material on the step. If that coming from the return jet or could it be small pieces of concrete coming off the bottom of the feet as people enter?
It’s possible that this could be dead algae. Dead algae looks a lot like sand, it’s so fine when you vacuum the pool in the filter position it will go through the filter and back into the pool. If you vacuum this sediment to waste it should resolve your problem. When vacuuming to waste you will have to add water to the pool. If this was sand or dirt it would not come back unless you have a broken lateral in your filter. If this happens after vacuuming this to waste or it gets worse then you may have to check your filter. Thanks for watching.
Okay question, I just bought a house that came with a pool. Hayward sand filter. I was fighting algae growth for a month and it’s FINALLY gone. However, what I thought was dead algae after lots of scrubbing and treatment (because there are streaks of it all across the pool) looks, and feels like sand. So I was going to order a new lateral piece. Could this be a different issue since it’s not only piling up under the return!?
@@hollieparrish8646 Yes, if it is sand it will only be on the floor under the return jet(s). If you need a lateral assembly l have them, if you email your contact info l will be glad to help. My email is on my RUclips channel. Thanks for watching.

Make sure you have the right amount of sand, sometimes to much sand can cause this. You may also need to backwash the system thoroughly. If you have any questions feel free to contact me I will be glad to help.
Your multiport will have nothing to do with this issue. Keep an eye on it and if this continues or gets worse then you may need to check the laterals inside the filter. Thanks for watching.
Sand going into the pool has nothing to do with the multiport . Make sure it is sand and not dead algae, if it is sand going back into the pool then you will have to check the lateral assembly. Thanks for watching.
Nice of you to gonto the trouble and time in prepping this video. I hate sand filters. Whenever I get the chance, I replace them with cartridge filters. I just don't see any reason to have a sand filter. If you are paying for electricity to circulate water, why run it through a filter that let's algae and other particles straight back into your pool? Surr cartridges are a little more work to clean, but waste WAY less water to clean, they need cleaning less often due to their much larger filter area, and don't have a MPV that gives trouble. I just don't see why sand filters are so popular. Worst of all, they are hard work to commission and decommission.
Sand systems are more expensive to buy, but much cheaper to operate. Sand systems are also more forgiving to operate than cartridge filters because they do not filter as fine as cartridge filters. Sand on average is changed every 4 to 5 years and is also self cleaning. It costs a lot less to change the sand than to replace the filter in a cartridge system. All filter systems work well, (sand, cartridge or DE) and it is a matter of preference. The size of the pool and where you live also makes a difference in which system will work best for you. Thanks for watching.
Could it be the 6 way valve thing? Iv tried different sand, filter balls and I'm still getting lines of sand or algae (with filter balls) heeeeeelllllp
@@adrftgvvbh If you have sand coming back into the pool then you may need to check the laterals inside the filter. The multiport valve has nothing to do with this issue. Sand is better and if you are using sand then use # 20 silica pool filter sand only. Thanks for watching.

I have the same issue. It only spits out sand from the bottom floor returns after a backwash! Perhaps not rinsing it enough? Daily, no sand, just after backwashing! How do I troubleshoot, or is that also a symptom of a broken lateral?
On most side mount filters, the laterals are attached to the bottom elbow assembly which is attached to the bulk head. In order to remove the assembly you have to take it apart. If you are just removing or replacing the laterals you can unscrew them, if the elbow is damaged then you have to unscrew both top and bottom unions on the outside of the filter and remove the bottom bulk head to replace the elbow assembly.
I have a sand filter that says Millennium. It’s only marked as 27in. The laterals do not twist on or lift up. I measured the lateral from top to bottom and its 30in. What lateral assembly do you suggest I need?
I am getting algea blowback right out of the blue..was working fine. Can algae just get through? Ive replaced the sand , backwash and rinse for a minimum of 1 min. I dont know how its getting through...thank you
Most filters do, however some blue torrent filters have laterals and some use a screen at the base. I would refer to an owner’s manual for the model you have.
When I pulled up my valve assembly, like you suggested in your video; the central pipe and and lateral assembly also came up with it a few inches. Getting it back down without damaging the laterals seems impossible without some kind of vibrating device (maybe an oscillating saw without a blade on the outside of the filter?) to liquefy the sandy water and reseat the assembly on the base, so unless there’s a trick you know of, I imagine I have to wet dry vac the sand out and resettle the lateral assembly. Before I went down that path I thought I’d confirm my observation?
If this has happened, you will have to remove the sand to put the lateral assembly back in. You can lightly sand the end of the standpipe and lube it, before connecting back to the valve. This will help when removing in the future.
My sand filter shows about 10 psi after backwashing. When it gets to about 13-14 psi it needs to be backwashed again (low flow shuts off pool heater and vacuum doesn't work). This filter is about 25 years old and never had sand changed. Do you think this is the problem?
Hello, I have a Hayward S180T. I recently purchased a new lateral,( Sorry I am just seeing your site), however, sand is still coming into the pool. Any suggestions? BTW, I put 150 pounds of sand inside.
You have the right amount of sand, if this continues you may have to take the sand out of the filter and recheck your lateral assembly. Thanks for watching.
I have the Hayward pool and spa sand filter. They didn’t mark it when they put it up it either carries 100 pound of sand or 150 pounds of sand. How can I find out
If you measure the diameter of the tank this will help. 16 1/2” is 100 lbs, 18 1/2”is 150 lbs, 20 1/2 is 200 lbs, 22 1/2” is 250 lbs and 24 1/2 is 300 lbs. Thanks for watching.
I replaced my lateral assembly, as well as the sand - it didn’t seem to solve my problem. I can vacuum the pool clean, and after running my filter for just a few hours I’ve got dark spots at the bottom of my pool again. Any suggestions?
If you are vacuuming a pool that was algae infested or you had mustard algae, but the pool is clear now then you would want to vacuum the sediment to waste. Vacuuming to waste will bypass the filter, however you will have to add water to the pool. Once this fine sediment is out of the pool then you will vacuum in the filter position for normal vacuuming and cleaning. Thanks for watching.
We have vacuumed to waste, as well as vacuumed with independent vacuums that aren’t attached to the filter. The sand (or potentially algae) always returns to the bottom of the pool after the filter has been running for a few hours. Is it possible the new lateral is broken? Or can the algae be returning when the filter is on? Thank you!
Fine sediment should be vacuumed to waste. Dead algae or mustard algae is so fine it will go through the filter back into the pool. Do not use an automatic cleaner because it will stir up the sediment and it will also run through the cleaner back into the pool. Once all this fine sediment is out of the pool you will be fine. I believe that your filter is good, if one of the laterals is broke then you would have a lot of sand at the bottom of each return jet in the pool. If this sediment is all over the floor of the pool it is dead algae and it looks like sand. Sand will only accumulate at the floor under the return jets of the pool, not the whole entire pool.
What about the return water looks murky while vacuuming. It's an above ground pool. We have a ton of dead algae at the bottom of the pool. We think. It's too cold to get in and try to grab it to see if it's sand. We can't keep it clear. Nothing works.bought two laterals in one year because the company will not honor a warranty. Anyway I'm about ready to get rid of the pool.
For normal cleaning you would vacuum the pool in the filter position, when a pool gets really dirty or algae infested you would vacuum in the waste position. When vacuuming to waste you are bypassing the filter, however you will have to add water to the pool. Thanks for watching.
Your valve should be fine. If sand comes out in backwash this can happen if there is to much sand in the tank. It will self level, however if this continues or you get sand in the pool, then you would want to check your laterals. Thanks for watching.
When running your pump in high speed sand should not be going into the pool. If you have the same lateral assembly that is in the video, you need to check the ball joints of the laterals. This is where the laterals connect and pivot on the hub or assembly, over time they wear and then sand will go through. If you need a lateral assembly there are several links down below in the description of this video. Also, make sure that you only use # 20 silica filter sand. Thanks for watching.
Howdy Mark, I sure do need your help. I purchased a pool package from a seller on EBay but it didn't come with a Hayward filtration system, and I'm having a real big problem with the Lateral system. It's made very cheap and there are open sections where the laterals attach to the hub, and the filter sand is being sucked through and pumped into the pool. I want to get rid of the entire lateral system that came with the pool filter and up-grade it. I'm wondering if it's possible to replace the lateral system that I have with a better system? my system is 26" tall, and laterals are 13" across. Is it possible that one of the lateral systems from Harward will fit my tank? The tank itself is 16" round. I will try to ad to add the description on my filtration system to this post. @Hallmark Pool Supplies I been having what I thought to be sand or dirt at the bottom of my pool. when try to clean it out with water hose vaccum it dissipate or it goes straight through the net. So I use pools vaccum pump and filter it though the waste. I don't know what it is. I guess it's algae. once I vaccum it out of the pool through the waste it stays clear long as filter is off but when it's on the dirt/algae gets back into the pool. I tried back washing and rinsing before turning filter back on. I'm still having this issue. Any solutions?
You need to chemical treat for mustard algae, take a water sample to your local pool store and have it tested. After treatment, you definitely want to vacuum on waste to remove. If you vacuum in filter it will come back into the pool. When vacuuming in waste you will have to add water to the pool. Once you are done you may want to check or change the sand in the filter.
Yes, but not if the sand is new. Channeling occurs when the sand gets old and dirty. When this happens you would change the sand, the sand is usually changed every 3 to 5 years, depending on the type of chemicals you use.

As a rule your tank should be about 2/3 full. You can also look at the label on the filter this will tell you how much sand you need. Thanks for watching.
What are your thoughts about using pea gravel 1st about just above the lateral assemblies? Then put sand above the pea gravel level. I've even heard of a layer of fine small glass. Which can serve as an algae repellent.
If it is a small tank or residential, sand only will be fine. If it is a larger tank or commercial, you can use pea gravel then sand. However most people just use sand only, Sand is definitely going to filter better then gravel or glass because it is much finer.

The lateral assembly stand pipe should be inserted into the underside of the valve, there should be no space. Thanks for watching.
@@HallmarkPoolSupplies thank you!!😊
Thanks for another great video. If you change sand to Glass media like Dr Dryden or Filter Balls would a broken assembly be as much of an issues since there is no sand? Also can you use Glass media and Filter balls together?

Great video! Do you have a video for a side mount system? I got all my sand vacuumed out, but how can you inspect the laterals (fold up style)?
I do not have a video on a side mount filter that pertains to the lateral assembly. The assembly is similar but is much harder to inspect. The lateral assembly can be removed but you have to remove the two side screws on the lower elbow assembly inside the tank. Thanks for watching.
GREAT INFORMATION THANK YOU!!!!!

You can vacuum to waste, thanks for watching.
Thanks
Just keep an eye on it, if the problem continues or gets worse then you may have to check your laterals inside the filter. Thanks for watching.

Hi, we had our assembly just replaced and new sand added but we are still getting sand. Any ideas what could be causing it? Also, we have the exact same filter. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Good evening Mark,
I recently swapped out the sand in my sand filter.
Thanks for watching.
hi Mark like your comment inground pool jets work fine only when i connect the hose in the skimmer to vacuum the pool jets stop working thank you

@@HallmarkPoolSupplies I figured thanks for the response. Any tips on keeping it centered at the bottom when filling with sand?
On most filters there is a notch at the bottom of the filter to set the lateral assembly. Once in place, hold the lateral assembly down while pouring in the sand.
I have old s240 Hayward which new lateral assembly do I need? Like your videos very thorough
For the S240 filter you would just replace the laterals (old style threaded), they come in a 10 pack. Here is the link if you need them.

Great info!
Very informative video. We have been getting sand in our new pool pretty much since day one. Is it possible to have a broken lateral in a new filter?
Anything is possible, thanks for watching.
After replacing the laterals because of crack, and the head because of other damage and a flattened gasket. Is it normal to still have some sand in the pool while it works its way out of the lines or should it disappear pretty quickly?
It should stop immediately, thanks for watching.
If down the road this keeps happening then you will have to open the filter and inspect it again.
i have a new sand filter with no lables it is larger than my 16 inch hayward need to know what size lateral or if i can use old lateral

Can I replace my vevor 19 inch sand filter laterals with a Hayward?
@@tobyzertuche1671 l don’t believe so, the lateral assembly by Hayward only works with a Hayward filter. Thanks for watching.
Thanks, very helpful !!
I'm only seeing sand coming out of my floor returns after a backwash. No other time. Could it be from a bad multiport? How to troubleshoot?
Your multiport will have nothing to do with this issue. Keep an eye on it and if this continues or gets worse then you may need to check the laterals inside the filter. Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much!! What was the name of the lube you used, I couldn't catch the name?
Jack's lube, there is a link in the description.
What if you changed the entire lateral system with a new kit and sand is still going into the pool? Could there be a problem with the multiport?

What about after you backwash and rinse it then turn it back to filter and it spits out sand ..?
Watch it for now and if you continue to see sand coming out of your return jet then you may need to check your laterals. If you have any questions feel free to contact me.
I have the same issue. It only spits out sand from the bottom floor returns after a backwash! Perhaps not rinsing it enough? Daily, no sand, just after backwashing! How do I troubleshoot, or is that also a symptom of a broken lateral?
Maybe I missed something in this video, but how do you fold up the laterals without cutting a hole in the side of your filter?
How do u get the laterals assembly out when the 2 water flows pipes r separate and L shape?
I believe this filter model is by Astral, I would recommend to contact the manufacturer to locate parts.
I am getting algea blowback right out of the blue..was working fine. Can algae just get through? Ive replaced the sand , backwash and rinse for a minimum of 1 min. I dont know how its getting through...thank you
You may need to backwash and rinse again, doing this back to back will give a more thorough cleaning of the filter.
Do all lat assemblies either unscrew or fold up? I have a Blue Torrent sand filter and it seems that they do neither.
Most filters do, however some blue torrent filters have laterals and some use a screen at the base. I would refer to an owner’s manual for the model you have.
Liked the video just wished there had been some example pics of the sand vs dead algea.
Thank you
When I pulled up my valve assembly, like you suggested in your video; the central pipe and and lateral assembly also came up with it a few inches.
I cant find the whole assembly to purchase. What do you suggest?
I carry laterals as well as the assemblies, what filter brand and model do you have?
My sand filter shows about 10 psi after backwashing. When it gets to about 13-14 psi it needs to be backwashed again (low flow shuts off pool heater and vacuum doesn't work). This filter is about 25 years old and never had sand changed. Do you think this is the problem?
Yes, thanks for watching.
Hello,
I have a Hayward S180T.

@@HallmarkPoolSupplies I think my husband vacuums to waste no matter what lol But I appreciate your response.
Mine only dose this when I backwash. Laterals are good. Maybe a valve?
Your valve should be fine. If sand comes out in backwash this can happen if there is to much sand in the tank. It will self level, however if this continues or you get sand in the pool, then you would want to check your laterals. Thanks for watching.
My laterals and pipe is good no cracks but when my pump is on high it puts sand in pool it doesnt do it on low

I'm wondering if it's possible to replace the lateral system that I have with a better system? my system is 26" tall, and laterals are 13" across.

Mine doesn’t have legs on it
If we're my lateral support attaches to the pool to filter is the filter broken
Wha?
Hi
My lateral stem measure measures 21
A Hayward lateral assembly that measures 21" takes 150 lbs of sand.
What if sand is filtering in pool yet?
You are saying do but You are not actually showing getting the laterals outnof the tank
My lateral pipe breaks every year!!!
Sorry to hear, thanks for watching.
It is faster, cheaper and a smart decision to replace the sand filter entirely with a cartridge or DE filter. Problem solved, and superior filtration from these replacements. Save water and chemical costs too.
Have you priced out those filters? Veeeeeery expensive
