Totally agree. If I can be powered up windsurfing on a 5.8 or smaller and the wind is steady (especially not offshore/gusty), I'll be windsurfing. If it's light or gusty, I'll be on wing gear, just enjoying the smooth ride and not worrying about speed (it will feel fast enough, but I know I'm slow winging). I'll be 57 in a week. You're an inspiration to everyone! Thank you.
Thanks Robbie. You're the master. I do, and feel like windsurfing and winging very much like you do. Great editing on this video, I'm getting the old Kalua vibes from this. Truly old school fun in the sun. Thanks for sharing. Aloha
Awesome to hear some insights about your gear set-up and technique… more of this with your windsurfing videos please 🙏 …you were completely smoking it on the water, no way was that slow 😮
Love this format from the GOAT with great information on gear selection, tuning + some great riding shots, Also as always from Robby very clear explanations and humble demeanor. More please.
I was windsurfing an outer reef yesterday, fully powered on 5.0 (I'm 80kg) and was not envying all the wingers struggling in the strong wind + choppy swell! There are conditions for everything!
Excellent video! I appreciate the insight and I am somewhat surprised that you aren't using a harness. I still have the mentality that wing sizes below 4.x are great but the conditions then favor windsurfing and that is where I change gear. I too love the light conditions for foiling and wouldn't want to windsurf in wind less than 15-17 kts but foiling is so amaing. Mahalo!
You are still ripping! Greetings from another Dutch long year fan! With a big board a big handwing and a big frontwing reaching no more than 19 miles an hour on flat lakes, but still tons of fun ;-)
Wow! I didn't realise, looks like the Naish masts connection has gone the way of Armstrong now! Interesting hearing Robby talking about wings lift vs area and other factors adjusting it, I design mine too. I think there's a lot of feeling from riders that smaller is better but personally I think there's too much focus on area when chord thickness is often the penalty for people's moves to low area wings. My latest is in progress, winter here in NZ and I'm lucky to get one or two days in the weekend, this one is super thin and a challenge to prepare for moulding from but I think it's going to be fast with a real waves sweet spot in speed range.
Awesome! I love riding my Hover Ascend as well. Will try your tips about mast position, although I can already feel lots of front foot pressure 😂. Looks like You compensate that with shifting your body weight hard forward. Your tge goat, I'll give it a try in Porto Pollo 🎉❤
Thanks Robbie. I used the 7.5 MK4 yesterday in SF bay. It did a fine job in diminishing winds. Good airtime too. Now I want the wing your using and I feel I can stop buying dlabs at 2k
Thank you Robby for some nice tips. Im starting up on wing surfing and you have some great tips about your gear and how it is setup and what wind speeds you like. That helps a lot. Im 92 kg (tall) on a 115 L board (its to big) with a 6.0 wing. Im strugling a bit how small a board I can go down to comfortably, maybe a 85 or 75 like you. Greetings from Denmark
Mahalo US1111! I recently picked up a used board that was once built and ridden by Johnny Heineken -- and the stance is super wide! I used to ride with my feet shoulder width apart, but I've adapted my stance and starting to get the hang of it, finally! Interesting how you drive your back knee behind your front leg -- I gotta try that!
I’m amazed his knees can survive that stance. I was a windsurfer and the pounding always aggravated my knees. Switched to kite and foil….the foil seems stress them more than the surf kiting because of the constant balance and weird positions or twisting at the knees. I wonder if he’s on his original knees or an aftermarket set.
Totally agree with Robby. I always prefer windsurfing when it is above 25knots. It is simply not enjoyable anymore to be winging in stronger wind, just purely survival mode. It would be way cooler to jump some waves on a fsw or hit your new speed record with slalom gear.
The max I got on my Armstrong HS1550 foil was 21mph and I was crapping myself, it felt way faster than that, so I take my hat off to you going 30mph + . Maybe I need new gear 🤔. Thanks for another great video, surf safe.
Glad you mentionned winging in 35 knots + wind is not what it's meant for. Not sure it's really clear for every winger I see strugling on the spot :p) (while windsurfing of course)
How would windsurfing speed compare to wingfoiling speed in these conditions? Definitely seems like there's a crossover point where the windsurfers will be faster. I can't speak for windsurfing, but it does seem like the wheels start to fall off at speed from speed wobbles when foiling. Do you think that's a gear issue? It does seem to be that the bottleneck is maintaining stability and control of the foil. I subconsciously let off the accelerator. Curious if that's just inherent to a foil moving underwater such that it's fundamentally less stable at speed and that will always be the case when comparing wingfoiling to planing on the surface as in windsurfing?
I would just rigg down and get a smaller board and foil and go gliding on the high wind swells instead of windsurfing. Ha ha, windsurfers dont glide for long...
Robby made total sense when it comes to struggling in really windy conditions with small twitchy wings rather than large wings in moderate winds. Perhaps it’s my age, similar to his. Love my winging though and makes me feel young again 🤙
Im not attracted at all to Wings. Not sure what will happen when a brand comes out with the model X-WING. The force will be strong in me i guess 😂😂😂😂😂😂

I used to have only Gaastra and Mistral stuff because Robby had that gear. He was and is still a Hero in Holland.

That humility makes you the greatest waterman ❤
Thank you for your insightful comments and advice, you are the best. Greetings from Poland
Thanks Robbie. You're the master.
I do, and feel like windsurfing and winging very much like you do.

Truly old school fun in the sun.
Thanks for sharing.
Aloha
Pretty fast. I managed 24mph in perfect flat water… that felt insane. Never mind 30+ in that wild sea state. Good effort
Thank you very much for reporting back on your experience

It's always a great pleasure listening and watching you, you are a legend
Thanks Robby! That was packed full of valuable info. Keep the tips coming, please! Aloha from Hood River.

Robby is the Mick Jagger of windsurfing, ageless performance.
Cheers for the insights!!! You're a LEGEND!!! Greetings from Singapore
I feel my arms burn with pain watching this.
Just love it.

Have you tried winging? Did it look like they were struggling because their set up was wrong?
Always fun to see you out there! 🤙
Such a nice an humble man, legend!!
Waiting for the next video in light wind... thanks for your video. Respect
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you very very much!!!! Always a very useful pleasure listen to your explanations !!
The GOAT! Thanks for that.

Awesome! It's windsurfing weather, Aloha!
Awesome video! I hope you post more windsurf speed videos!
Great inspiration for me no matter what gear you are on. But windsurfing I love most 🤙🏼🤙🏼

Awesome! When are you doing more LE stuff with the pirate motif?
Just clocked 27.4 knots with my Chubanga 700 yesterday. Ready to go over 30 knots🎉🎉🎉
Great job regardless!
Great info! Thanks!
Awesome insights to share
Legend!
For designers: what about introducing in some way harness line on wing?!😉
Thanks Robbie! Jon Hunt

@@daversjIm sure Mr. Robby was riding with all the adrenaline he could put forth, to quiet those knees from shouting " Stop the Insanity Please"
Very cool! Go Robby!

I typically wind foil from 8-18, then shortboard windsurf 19-30 mph. I use the same 4.5 and 5.6 sails.
Awesome, make it look easy. I need to get a wing, hopefully coming from kiting I can pick it up somewhat easily…🤔

definition of heaven: going downwind with 30+ knots. definition of hell: going across the wind with 30+ knots!
Go,go,go…!!🤙🏽
Top Robby 😊
Good going fun 😊

What do you thing about use harness fof going faster?
What are your thoughts harnesses for winging?

Well change my foil to a 340 cm2 ….😅…. Now I’m definitely faster than 95% of the windsurfers on the straight.
how to speed foil - put lines on the kite
Hey Robby. Growing my hair like you! My corporate job can kiss my a* if they don't like it. Mahalo! 😁
Im not attracted at all to Wings. Not sure what will happen when a brand comes out with the model X-WING. The force will be strong in me i guess 😂😂😂😂😂😂
