Great to see this with 2 windsurfers who the public can relate to experience wise. So a believable record. Mario has chosen to concentrate on foiling. Not sure it is the best decision. Fin racing and sailing is so much nicer. Foiling is OK in light winds just to get on the water and the new "guns" in foiling are already there and they are not even 20 years old yet .......... ! Foil less exhausting ??? And then he goes on to show you his average heart bet during the foil session which is much higher than on the fin !!! He may feel less exhausted, but that is not what his heart is telling him. For me: Fin every day. BUT: there is NO "battle" between foil and fin. They are two different (but similar) sports with different skill sets. The choice must be made by the young ones who cannot afford to have foils, fins, multiple boards and specialised sails..... And in the end of the day: Choose the one you ENJOY the most, NOT one or the other because it's faster !!!
Not so long ago the great Robby Naish said that he found foiling boring because it elevated him above the surface of the water where he got no sensation of the waves and chop.through his feet. I agree. I liked your video though, Thank You. Aloha from Hawaii.
Verry interesting video food for thought its pretty well known though that foils are faster in lighter wind but have too much drag at high speed to vompete with a finned board at present time and dedign fevelopment ,great stuff Perry 🤟😎🌏🌎🌎🔱🇦🇺🏆53.7 knots av sp wssr 37yrs
I'm a total foil convert. Many more days on the water and the smooth, silent run has me hooked. Did the fin and loved it for a long time but after the first ride on the foil I've not turned back. You looked pretty steady out there despite your misgivings. It's fun to learn from guys like you.
Very site specific. Where I am, we are using foils from 10 kn to 25 kn. Even in higher winds we're choosing foil because we sail all over, 3 km upwind, downwind runs. Larger swell is fun, and we fly over bad chop. Moving time on water is up to 3hrs which I don't think I could do on a fin.
I think fin sailing is more fun, but being able to foil enables more days on the water - so learn both - and choose the equipment that allows you to windsurf best according to the conditions.
As a retired windsurfer of many great years, I exited the sport before kites, foils etc…I heard kites allowed for less gear to haul around with smaller board and kite. But it sounds like the vans are getting bigger again needing both foil gear and fin gear to cover all of the possible days on the water for the effort to get there!
Great vid! I know it was windy, but looks like 450 front wing would have been a better choice. My experience is smaller is not necessarily faster. Feeling comfortable is where it’s at on a foil. But epic sailing guys 🤙
Medium board and 36 fin on that day, if it was blowing 20 knots, would be a fairer comparison with the 375cm2 foil set up. Very nice video nevertheless! Make the repeat 😀
Interesting... try the new F4 Foil. We had some issues in San Francisco with the flying camel being perhaps too light in high wind 25-30 kn and swell. Beautiful board, though nice in the flood ties when its smooth.
On fin, nonstop sessions of 20, 40, & 60 miles, my average speed at my local spot is around 22 mph on 8.7/81, 7.7/71, and 6.7/71 as the water gets very rough as the wind increases. I'm been hopeful the foil can go further faster but i have not been able to dial the foil in to be comfortable for these distances, especially on days when the wind speed is variable like 12 to 28 when I'm OK on the 8.7/81.
I feel with a proper front wing it should be a slam dunk for the foil. However, I'm in the same boat as you (slower than you though -- my max is your average). The fin for me is consistently a few kts faster on top speed and average. If the wind is bad though, the foil can be 10 kts faster on average quite easily. Main thing is I can guarantee foiling 3 feet in the air if I pick foil in those conditions...whereas on fin planing is not 100%. And for foil, I can tour my spot. I'm a bit stuck in one place on fin. The debate continues!
Thanks a lot for this very nice action video! Really motivating! Interesting question and I'm also wondering: big fin slalom board or foil board in light wind? In very light wind, it seems foil is a killer and there is no way for a fin setup, especially for a big rider, but in around 20 knots for example...?
Thank you very much Mario for the video! Very nice runs. Could you tell us the name of the app where you can compare different sessions? Do you think wing foiling will get into this discussion in a near future?
Pretty funny that your heart rate is higher with foil even tough it´s physically less triring. Seems that your adrenaline level gets very high under psychologic distress. But these measures show where your main goal in training should be: Geting your stress level higher that your body doesn´t pump out adrenaline like crazy. Best way is to confront your fears, that you get used to stress more, learning to regulate your body to a calmer state so it doesn´t push out so much adrenaline.
To me it wouldn't really matter if the flat board goes a little faster than the foil, because with the foil it's so much smoother and more comfortable.
yep, foil wins 100% of the time and all the old folks need to accept this and move forward. it's only natural that a sport like windsurfing is always making progress when it comes to gear. why hold on to the past and only accept the standard from 20 years ago as the best? why not go even further and still use some woodplank as the surfboard and leaves as the sail like some ancient tribe used to do hundreds of years ago? I mean, it was good for them, why shouldn't it be good for us now? just accept that foils are the next logical step in the advancement of all kinds of surf gear, be it windsurfing, kitesurfing or normal surfing. foils excel at just about everything. and foils might not even be the end all be all, always be open to improvements in technology.
A great video! You can see all the effort you put into it by the different shots that you took. You and Nils are a great team. Will he be windsurfing naked for his next session 😛 It's very interesting how high people's heart rates go. It shows you are really working hard, plus the adrenaline is really pumping through your body. Great looking location and fantastic session by both of you!!
The foil looks effortless. It looks slower because it is less dramatic. Then you compare it side to side and see marginal differences. Both are amazing for different reasons.
Great video 🤙🤙🤙 The big board looks really fun indeed, but the foil is also nice if you like the extra technical approach needed. I like it to have the choice of both and ride whatever is most appropriate considering the actual conditions.
The outcome is totally dependant on the windstrength. Foils are for efficiency in low power conditions. Whereas fins are for speed in high power conditions. So it's a pointless, though popular, video.
Foiling sucks! it is boring to watch it and it doesn’t look very enjoyable either. You are ‘semiprofessional’ level rider but I see ‘average’ level riders (foilers&always gusty where we sail) ; their sessions are shorter, they spent significant amount of time in water, number of crashes astonishing, top speeds nowhere close to a fin, yeah they can be faster/ go upwind better in certain wind speeds, but is it worth?
Great to see this with 2 windsurfers who the public can relate to experience wise.
So a believable record.

Foggy Naish what a legend
Type his name in RUclips search. He has wonderful video's posted. Must see's!
If Naish says that it is law. Ban foil!
The rule is very simple, from 20 Kt upwards the regular windsurf is always faster than the foil one, below 20 Kt the foil is unbeatable.
Verry interesting video food for thought its pretty well known though that foils are faster in lighter wind but have too much drag at high speed to vompete with a finned board at present time and dedign fevelopment ,great stuff Perry 🤟😎🌏🌎🌎🔱🇦🇺🏆53.7 knots av sp wssr 37yrs

amazing. I love both foil and fin. It depends the conditions I chose one or other. As my spot has light wind 9 in 10 times go foiling.
The soul of windsurfing
It's in the fin
You win with a fin all the way down to your soul
True, but we have mega gusty lakes… the fin here also sometimes takes you to darkest places or your soul..🤣🤣
My knees are a bit shot and on the foil its much easier on the knees.
The filming with Nils was awesome. I loved it.
I think its not a matter of speed. Its a matter of wich discipline you like or dislike ❤
Can I like them both but choose to do one?
@@AndyLaufer I agree, and age / fitness can play a role too. I am 63 and can have much longer sessions on the foil than the fin.
What a pleasure to watch. Very entertaining
@@ThomasBundt very beauty place and windy
😅Is the crucial question really, what is 1 or 2 km/h faster, or rather: what is the most fun?
Fun is hard to measure, but for me, on that day, fin was definitely more fun.😄
Hey Mario, great video. I really enjoyed it. And, your father cracks me up.
Comparing the Alpha &500 is usually very representative in my opinion, as you can then see that you are usually much faster on the foil in the jibe.
True, in perfect conditions i am still faster on alpha500 with the fin, 24,5 on foil, 26,5 on fin...

Nice footage, where is located this lake?

Sorry if i missed it. Which lake is this?
in the end its about fun on the water. In light winds I now go wingfoiling, and in high winds windsurfing on a fin ;-)

But it sounds like the vans are getting bigger again needing both foil gear and fin gear to cover all of the possible days on the water for the effort to get there!
Windsurfing with the fin is the best I have ever done, but I have not yet sailed with a foil.

As I understood correctly, foil is fun, a bit more extreme and scary. And the fin is fun and fast. This why you liked fin more.
Exactly.😊🤙🏽

Nice video. But why not a smaller board to the fin?
Great video. How are the speeds measured? Is there some kind of laser device on shore.
Very good vid, keep it up guys!
Part of what wings are you using in this video, what's the wind like? I can't get my Foil to 60km/h I'm using a SB slr mk2

How do you compare Dark Horse boards with JP, Patrick or Isonic?
Hey Mario, what app are U using to log and compare your sessions ? Tnx 🤙

I love borh foil and fin. To me is like when you have to kids a girl and a boy. I could not choose one of them
I still prefer to fin if it’s windy 😊
Me too 😄
Will endlich mit dir speed windsurf foilen!!!!! Wann bin jetzt bereit!
The foil looks effortless. It looks slower because it is less dramatic. Then you compare it side to side and see marginal differences. Both are amazing for different reasons.
I will never surf at that level… but I am sure my ankles and knees would be hugely grateful if I switched up, that’s for sure! My spine probably too…
Sehr schönes Video....
Fin RULES! But thanks for your thoughts and efforts😀
Foil?? Never ever 👎
The feeling of the water in Windsurfing 🙏❤️
What app and tracker do you use to travk these sesions?
Super geil !!!
nice song starts at 4:30;any idea on this song; keep sail contact anyway;🎵
immer nice musik am start, dass gefäll mir XD
habibiiiii
I'll stay on fin. Thanks :D
what lake is this
Spät, aber von Herzen: Moin Mario, Moin Nils und Moin Philipp
surfer are surfer 🤙
Sailing without a foil seems physically harder. Is that true?
Ps: what is the name of the song played ?
Nice 😃
What app is it?
Where is this?
action vs tourist - the position on the board is so different even the speed is the same
Nice...❤
Good video
Slapper boards are fun but joint surgery after years of it isn't!!! Foils are fun for now.........

What is the spot name please?
Lake Störmthal near Leipzig
Amazing spot ! And shorty on summer, it's great !
Great video 🤙🤙🤙 The big board looks really fun indeed, but the foil is also nice if you like the extra technical approach needed. I like it to have the choice of both and ride whatever is most appropriate considering the actual conditions.
7.0, 5.8 in THIRTY knots?
7.8 and 5.8... :-)
941 meiner okay, LG
It's low wind!
Come and foil with me in that wind and say that again!😄🤙🏽
Epic once you stop talking!
So in summary, you’re faster than Nils
The sensation is on a regular fin much better. Foiling looks very stiff and boring.
Did you try foiling?
The outcome is totally dependant on the windstrength. Foils are for efficiency in low power conditions. Whereas fins are for speed in high power conditions. So it's a pointless, though popular, video.
You nobbled Nils with a slow fin. . . . .
Forever foil 🎉😝
If you want muscles…don’t foil !
Hop onto my foil race gear in 20-30 knots and then write that again.🤣
