Liliac are one of the best “tradition metal” groups today and certainly have one of the best female lead singers, not just today, but for all time. Melody Cristia has a one-in-a-million powerhouse voice. She is the female version of Ronnie James Dio, who has been her greatest influence. She has covered several of his vocal in songs from both Black Sabbath and Dio and knocked them out of the ballpark. Few people can cover a RJD vocal, but Melody has probably recorded the best covers by Ronnie. I keep hoping Liliac will cover some Rainbow, especially Stargazer. I’d love to hear Melody belting out that song, which is arguably Ronnie’s greatest vocal. The only problem Liliac suffers is that they are in the wrong decade. They would have been huge back in the 1980s, but metal has been taken over by singers that growl and snarl, each trying to sound more demonic than the rest and really good singing, like the kind that you can actually understand the lyrics to, has fallen out of favor for todays teens. Liliac is most likely the best family band in metal ever. Samuel is one awesome guitarist and Abby is an incredible drummer. I have never seen a family band in metal before, they’re kind of like the Partidge family or The Cowsills, if those groups played metal and were more talented. Attila Dorn is another incredible singer, in the tradition of 1980s Metal, which would have been huge in that time period. He’s the singer for the German band Powerwolf and has one of the strongest voices I’ve heard since RJD. He’s like a meld of RJD with a bit of Pavarotti thrown in. The way he changes his voice from a gritty metal to clean opera tenor while singing in Latin is unlike any other vocalist and makes him stand out from the crowd. Powerwolf would have been much more successful in the 1980s or 90s. They have done well, but don’t really have a large following in America, which is one of the largest music markets in the world. Unfortunately, American kids have lost the ability to enjoy quality music. Powerwolf very rarely tours in the US and when they do, it’s only one or two cities. That sucks, because I’m an old school rocker who played in bands during the 1980s and 90s, but they are one of the few modern metal bands I would pay to see in concert.
Isn’t it funny that Desmond Child changed the song title, then a couple years later another ex-Runaway - Lita Ford - has a hit where she sings, “I went to a party last Saturday night, didn’t get laid, got in a fight.” Love it. And Joan Jett is a legend.
My dad (super Conservative) had such a crush on Joan Jett and she was his musical goddesses. When Joan Jett came out as lesbian/bisexual, my dad was devastated, his fantasy crush was... crushed.
Atrazine, they're turning the freekin' frogs g@y! Even RFK knows this. 😮 But as timothy said, Joan is free to be whatever she wants, it doesn't bother me.
1981 i was a senior in high school when her hit single "I love Rock N Roll" burst out of nowhere. she was a punk-ass breath of fresh air compared to the Eagles and Boston and Styxx.
Music is the soundtrack to our lives. It takes us back to relationships locations highs and of course lows. Being individual its the story of us who we are and what we become Its magical really !

Joan's version of 'I Love Rock 'n' Roll' was number 1 on the day I was born, but 'I Hate Myself For Loving You' is my favourite song of her, with 'Bad Reputation' a close second.
Another great walk down the lane, Professor. My (former) brother-in-law was playing guitar for Amanda Overmyer when she went to the finals of American Idol. They, subsequently, went to California to seek their fortune and, while there, he had the opportunity to do several session gigs. One of those gigs was with Joan and he described her as, and I'm paraphrasing because it's been years, "a formidable woman that wanted things done her way". Which, at the moment of the conversation, struck me as perfectly reasonable. As graphically described in this video, Joan had to make her way in a male dominated industry and she succeeded because of that force of will.
Saw Joan in 2018. She had just turned 60, she was rocking her leather pants, and she was FABULOUS! She opened for Styx, so it was an AMAZING concert! I was especially happy to see so many teenage girls in the audience, singing along with EVERY song!
How times have changed! Band Maid (an incredible all female rock group from Japan) gets a lot of love and admiration from fans in Europe, America, and of course, Japan as well. I’m a 58 year old man and have no problem stating that they’re my favorite current rock band. My second favorite… The Warning, and all female trio! Not a man in sight with those 2 groups and yet they rock the way you’re supposed to. Hard, and with a lot of skill.
Joan was the opener for the Stadium tour. I had the opportunity to go to the concert at Sofi in LA and was delighted to hear how good she sounded. I always felt that she belonged in rock music! Sad that some did not feel the same because this girl has heart!
Desmond was the music version of Steve Guttenberg -- seems like he was just in everything in the 80's. That solo in I hate myself for lovin' you -- I had no idea it was done by Mick Taylor. Nice.
WOW! What a fantastic episode, better than usual; chock full of info I didn't know, like Mick Taylor played lead on this. Joan Jett is the female Elvis. A genuine Rocker!
@@skyking8420 I started with a Wards airline guitar. Almost unplayable. I developed my sound though, on much better instruments. The sound of the silvertone was long gone by the time she was in the runaways. I guess I don't see your point.
@@onusgumboot5565 It is that raw nasty sound that one may develop when learning on the economy axes. Her chops still have always maintained that rawness even with much better guitars. I recall an older clip of her playing a Les Paul, and sure the sutain is there but the unfiltered in your face rhythm remains, (BTW Silvertones are making a comeback 😃)
17:54 The "can't get laid" angle worked a year later for Jett's protege, Lita Ford. "Kiss Me Deadly" was actually one of my favorite "hair band" records of the '80s, and its namesake, by Generation X, fronted by a young Billy Idol, was one of my favorite punk records of the 1970s.
Mick Taylor left the Stones to be second guitarist to the Alvin Lee Band. And btw, Lita Ford was lead guitarist for the Runaways. Jett was the rhythm guitarist-backing singer…
Saw Joan open for the kinks back in the 90s. She kept pointing at me, tho my friend says she was pointing at him. Sorry, Chris, she was pointing at ME. (This friendly argument still rages to this day 😂)
I'll just never understand why people treated the female rockers so badly back in the 70s and 80s. They were just as good as most of their male counterparts, if not better than some of them. I loved listening to Joan Jett, Pat Benatar, Lita Ford, The Go-Gos, The Bengles, and so many more. Their music was just as good as the other rockers of their eras.
Yea and the girl rockers misbehaved every chance they got to, it was the rowdy rock n roll days of that era. Try reading some of the escapades the Go Go's were involved in when they were still nobody punk rockers, before new management changed their image to the girls next door and the public spotlight was on them, if you were the kind of guy who blushed easily or were committed to your high school sweetheart you wouldn't have wanted to be a pizza delivery boy taking some pies up to their hotel room after a performance, the same grab ass behavior to girls heard about all these years later would have today's people screaming rape.
@@dukecraig2402do they scream that about females doing that to males? Usually they are screaming about misogyny or something. Guys are always the bad person in everything
When I saw the title of this video, I had a different scenario in my mind. I imagined it was David Lee Roth at the hotel door singing: Do You Want To Touch Me 😂😂😂
First of all, I LOVE the Al B. Sure rep in your album case! Secondly, my son got his Amazon gift catalog in the mail yesterday. Man, how times have changed. Thank you Adam!
I might have done this one? If you bought or remember the K-Tell compilation albums like MIND BENDER you're going to love this channel!! BTW they also did gadgets like the VEG-O-MATIC 😅
I wasn't big on her pop hits but liked some of her songs under the radar, like You Got A Problem and Real Wild Child. Saw her live once (1987) and was very happy with the show.
Weird Al should have made a parody and called it, I hate myself for effing you" can see all kinds of awkward STD shenanigans ensuing in the music video.
Joan Jett is quite the amazing performer fighting against a system that tried to keep her (and other female artists) down and made some amazing songs still popular to this day.
I've been a fan of her since the Runaways (tried to see them, but it was in a bar and I was not quite 16 & they were 18). I still listen to Runaways albums a lot.
@@ProfessorofRock The old Cleveland Agora, spring of '77. That would have been my fist concert ever; however, that happened a few months later when I saw Ted N. at WSoR at Municipal Stadium.
@@ProfessorofRock I remember getting crap from my friends, but I'd always shrug and say "yeah, she's a woman who's gorgeous, can rock, play the hell out of the guitar, and she's badass ... what's not to love?"
I wouldn’t mind hearing a recording of “I Hate Myself Cause I Can’t Get Laid” as an alternative to the official release. A bit like “Hang On to Your Ego,” which Brian Wilson recorded before it morphed into “I Know There’s an Answer.” Songwriting is a process, and sometimes that process involves radical changes before we get the end product. And if Joan Jett was feeling frustrated and unloved cause she wasn’t having much luck in the bedroom, why not let her express that in her songwriting? I’m sure there are a few people who could relate to that feeling.
Absolutely! And thanks for the background on this one. My favorite thing about what you do is that you give us such interesting stories and context regarding songs we know quite well.
I love Joan Jett, always have. I’ve only had the chance to see her live a couple of times, but one of those times was at Six Flags Over Georgia when they shot the crowd footage for the “Do You Wanna Touch Me” video, and I’m even visible in the video. I’m the guy yelling “YEAH!”
In 1981 I had pictures of Olivia Newton John on my bedroom walls. After "I Love Rock and Roll "came out, those pictures were off the walls. Sorry Olivia. I just felt Joan's music, attitude and good looks were just enough for this then 13 year old.
That got me too, the way it was placed in the sentence structure. He meant that she "passed" on doing the song for NFL Sunday Night Football -- wherein Pink actually performed it. (Waiting All Week for Sunday Night).
Yeah, he should have thought that sentence structure over before saying that. I thought the same thing. When he said she passed, I had to Google it to lame sure she hadn’t really passed on. I knew that I didn’t hear about that and it seems that had she actually passed away, it would have been huge news? I’m happy to discover that she hadn’t passed away, but passed on performing the song for Sunday Night Football. Then they got Faith Hill instead…. Why would they get a country singer? If it was used today, they could get Melody Cristea from Liliac to do it. Liliac did a cover of Hate Myself and Melody slammed the vocals out of the park. She’s like a female Ronnie James Dio.
@@ProfessorofRock Sorry Professor, the other comments are right, your "passing" comment was in relation to MNF and I just misunderstood. Thanks for the response though, rock on!
My second concert ever was Joan Jett in 1983! I was 11 and I loved Joan Jett! KISS was my first concert. That was 1983 as well in January. Joan Jett was in August. I was lucky my older sister loved concerts too! 😊
That is such a good movie! And I was blown away by the way Joan held her own against an acting legend in the form of Gena Rowlands (who recently passed away) playing her and Michael J. Fox's mother in the movie.
Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t understand the dark side of the song “do you want to touch me.” The writer of the song is none other than Gary Glitter who is convicted of all sorts of child molestation charges in the late 90s and early 2000 and is basically in prison till he dies right now.
The first title is pure Joan Jett, but Desmond was spot-on- it would have never made the radio. I was a member of the Navy Training Center Orlando FL's Auxiliary Security Force in 1990- we provided security for a concert she did on base that year and I got to meet her and the rest of the Blackhearts. She is Rock 'N Roll royalty in my book and I surely DON'T hate myself for loving her!
I’ve loved Joan Jett since I was 14? 15? I was wandering my local used record store, Yesterday and Today Records, and FOUND an old Runaways album and bought it on a whim. BEST WHIM EVER!! Also found Lita Ford that way, but I digress… I remembered when I Love Rock n Roll was on my alarm clock every morning and when I made to connection, I was SHOCKED! This chick on my “new to me” record was the same chick in the radio?! Cuz the chick on my record was ROCKING IT HARD!! So I went to the MALL where everything cost so MUCH… I bought a couple of 45s (this was a time before CDs, CD singles and… THE INTERNET! No RUclips, no streaming. NONE of that…) She (and Lita) became my Guitar Heroes. I had started playing acoustic guitar when I was 11. I needed direction…and I was NOT a John Denver fan, I was more of a Jackson Browne fan (do you get what I’m trying to say?) and then I was talking with my next door neighbor (who was more like my older sister) Jenny and she proceed to tell me that back in the day (she graduated high school in 1974 I think) Joan Jett was going to High School at Wheaton High School (this school is about 5-7 miles from our houses). WHAT?! Joan Jett is a MoCo baby?! NO WAY!! (MoCo-Montgomery County) She said she didn’t really know her but she’d show up to some of the parties. My jaw dropped!! I thought that was the coolest thing I’d ever heard!! HEY! I was a kid. As the years have passed, she’s still a favorite of mine. I also remember back in 1990, I was working at Tower Records in DC. They were taking about opening a store in my hometown of Rockville MD and asked me to go help them open it. Met some really cool people, but that’s a story for another time…

That’s right. THESE are the role models we need.
The opening credits for Freaks and Geeks is the best video for Bad Reputation
Isn’t it funny that Desmond Child changed the song title, then a couple years later another ex-Runaway - Lita Ford - has a hit where she sings, “I went to a party last Saturday night, didn’t get laid, got in a fight.” Love it. And Joan Jett is a legend.
That’s true!
Good point I thought of that too because it’s not common for a woman to sing such a thing… but I like it.
Lita Ford was way better than Joan Jett both in looks, guitar skills, and voice IMO
Yea but it wasn’t in the title.

Joan's version of 'I Love Rock 'n' Roll' was number 1 on the day I was born, but 'I Hate Myself For Loving You' is my favourite song of her, with 'Bad Reputation' a close second.
Very cool!
That’s valid!
ANOTHER, well done episode, Adam. Thank you!
Joan is a rock goddess!! Hate myself is by far my favorite song of hers, screams power chords!!
I always thought "I Hate Myself for Loving You" was a great song title and now I've lived it, it's even more meaningful.
Cool!
Awesome!
Female K-pop stars have been attacked, but their labels don't provide K-pop stars with security.
1. Joan Jett did not write I love rock n roll. It was a cover. 2. Lita Ford was the lead guitarist of the Runaways. Joan played rhythm.

Nice.
Joan Jett is an amazing singer guitar player who wasn't treated right but stood her ground & I respect her for not backing down! 🤠

Great video. Joan is a great rhythm guitarist, but I must correct you...Lita Ford was the lead guitarist for the Runaways.
Saw Joan Jett in concert last year with Bryan Adams. Still an incredible performer and sounds just as good as she did back in the 80s!
I saw that show too! Awesome!
She has taken the sound of a Silvertone sears guitar and made it into her own style, Iconic, one of my favorite guitar masters
She plays gibson melody makers. Always has.
Guitar master? Banana haha banana haha, inhale, banana haha banana!
@@onusgumboot5565 Yes but she started with a silvertone her parents bought her
@@skyking8420 I started with a Wards airline guitar.
Jett switched to lead vocals in 1977 when Currie left, but Sandy West & Lita Ford sang a few lead vocals as well.
I’ve seen her in concert. She’s really awesome.

Joan was rhythm guitar for The Runaways. Lita Ford was the lead player.
Totally agree don't forget Heart!
@@ChrystalMagic You're right... How could I have left Heart out. I had such a crush on Nancy 🤦♂
Classic sexism - that’s why.

I cannot recall *not* liking any Joan Jett song. She is officially *HARD CORE.*
Was hooked the first time I heard it!!!
And became true years later for my s.o.
I agree. I think it would be cool to have such a version!
Absolutely! And thanks for the background on this one. My favorite thing about what you do is that you give us such interesting stories and context regarding songs we know quite well.
Adam is the Paul Harvey of Rock. We always get “the rest of the story”.
I would love to hear that too.

That's right.
Couldn't get laid so I got in a fight! Ain't no big thing.🤨
I went to a party last Saturday night....... You know the rest.
I was in junior high school with Joanie. She was cool back then, too!
Joan didn't pass in 2006, she's still alive!
When did I say She passed?
That got me too, the way it was placed in the sentence structure. He meant that she "passed" on doing the song for NFL Sunday Night Football -- wherein Pink actually performed it. (Waiting All Week for Sunday Night).
This proves that Joan is a clone today 😂
Only part I remember from Light of Day was Joan telling Michael J. Fox he needed to "start your own band and call it the attitudes".
Right!
It was a good film. I still remember a good bit of it, mostly because I was crushing on Michael J. Fox at the time.
That is such a good movie! And I was blown away by the way Joan held her own against an acting legend in the form of Gena Rowlands (who recently passed away) playing her and Michael J. Fox's mother in the movie.
I love when she shows up at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. She's super knowledgeable and has been in the broadcast booth on several occasions.
Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t understand the dark side of the song “do you want to touch me.” The writer of the song is none other than Gary Glitter who is convicted of all sorts of child molestation charges in the late 90s and early 2000 and is basically in prison till he dies right now.
Oh man.

I never listen to that man…for a reason.
Joan Jett IS Rock N' Roll.
Amen!
