    I was about 9 or 10 when our operator brought a Time Warp to the bowling lanes my parents owned. I remember being fascinated by those flippers and thought they were really fun to play. But as I hazily recall, the machine wasn't all that popular and the operator changed it out with another game after a short stay. Those early electronic Williams pinball rectifiers NEVER EVER fail. My step father has been in the business since the late 70's, he still has a Time warp, Laserball Firepower, Tri Zone, Contact and Disco fever, all have been on location for over 2 decades and he still plays them regularly and sends them out on Party hires. All these pinballs still have the original rectifiers.

    My friend found one of these dead, but intact in an auto repair shop 1995. he bought for $100. brought it to my shop and we fixed it up. He still has it to this day and its a go to machine when in his game room. In true Time Warp fashion, First ball - straight down the hole! 😀 While fixing his machine, i found the top right pop bumper had never worked from factory. It was wired to the wrong output. The no back ground sound was known to happen sometimes, and happened every time on a no score ball returned to play.

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  Год назад +1

      Thank you D for confirming the sound issue. I have seen a few things in pinball machines where I thought "That never worked!", if the operator didn't catch it it might have crippled the whole game... depending on where it went, like if it ended up at the beach or something, hell the operator might never hear about it not working and then when it didn't make much money, he might pull it off route and not be much of a player so not notice the issue again and it stays that way the wholllllllle time until you or I figure it out :)

    I see you enjoy AvE also. I had a laugh at the little "hello ball" reference to him.
    I love how the online experts like to spout off about things they know nothing about. You are absolutely correct that you need to use a silicon based dielectric grease on those sliding contacts. When you use some contact cleaners they leave a dielectric lubrication film on the contacts too, and it is specifically designed for the purpose of cleaning contacts. They should go and search it. As per a particular encylopedia, starting with b.
    dielectric, insulating material or a very poor conductor of electric current. When dielectrics are placed in an electric field, practically no current flows in them because, unlike metals, they have no loosely bound, or free, electrons that may drift through the material. Instead, electric polarization occurs.

    The temperature (light CCT) of the filament usually dictates how long the bulbs will work, if the bulbs are underdriven then it has longer lifetime. Usually when the transformer output is shorted it doesn't blow the mains fuse (something I learned when I was a teenager) until the transformer itself is cooked to death so fuse at the wrong side of the rectifier is a mistake worth fixing._

    The problem with putting grease on the drop targets is it attracts dirt. In six months you’ll have to take them out and clean them again. Try NMP sensors. No horseshoes, no sliders, nothing to get dirty, nothing to wear out, nothing to adjust. Put them in once and never mess with them again.

    Does anyone know why SCR burn up lamp bulbs wear out the life span of the lamp bulbs compared to using FETs to turn on/off lamp bulbs extends the life span of the lamp bulbs?

    • @eDoc2020
      @eDoc2020 Год назад

      I doubt it has anything to do with the type of transistor. Bulbs will last longer if run at a lower voltage and if they are not turned on and off suddenly. Perhaps the Williams runs a tiny bit of current through the filaments when the bulbs are not lit which will reduce the thermal shock.

    I had a question. When you clean the contacts, do you try to use isopropanol alcohol first? A lot of computer gurus use IA to clean. Have you tried it and has it worked for you? I don't remember you saying anything about IA as a cleaner and if you don't use it, can you give a reason why you don't use it?

    • @TheRealScooterGuy
      @TheRealScooterGuy Год назад +1

      Having worked in the electronics manufacturing field, I can tell you (or those reading) that 91% isopropyl alcohol is used to clean electronics during manufacture. (There are some things it shouldn't be used on, such as some printing, of course.) I don't see any reason why it couldn't be used to clean contacts in a pinball machine. Contacts where the parts slide (like in the video) would still need the dielectric grease applied afterward.

    Any idea as to why the biff bars are not symmetrical and so off center on this game?

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  Год назад

      Not sure, they're usually off center a little bit, but these are more so. My theory would be, the flippers add more english on the ball, and theoretically if it still had considerable english on it after bouncing back past the flipper, it might bounce off the apron in a weird angle so they moved the bars to block it better than usual...

    The reason I’ve never really been into pinball is because of how hard they are to find in the wild! I still see the odd arcade game out there, and most of the good ones have Atari or NES ports, but I’ve only ever seen _one_ pinball in person. I’d love to play more but they’re nowhere! I know there’s games like pinball fx3 that simulate a few tables, but _c’mon people!_
