To all the hamster owners here in the comments, I just want to say that I would reccomend putting more than 6! Munchie makes a great point, but when you give your hamster 10-12 inches of bedding, they will absolutely THRIVE with their burrows! Stay healthy and happy!
My mom went out today and got scented bedding but she didn't know until she got some and I told her so she is gonna return it soon. Thank god I watch you and Victoria Rachel!
Hi Munchie! How are you and the rescue doing during the quarantine? Are you doing well so far with RUclips being your only income or are you struggling? I hope you guys are doing well and I’m praying for y’all and for the hammies!
I love your galaxy pants! What a coincidence that you wore that while cleaning Mercury’s cage! I am trying to get a hamster in a few days. I love space as well so I like the names Dipper or Cosmic.
Back when I first had hamsters ( in the 90's) all we had were wood shavings. Now that there is more options I prefer the paper bedding because a part of me is always worried the wood bedding is going to get the hamsters sick now.
@LUCAS ELIAS there's a method to make paper bedding at home, I don't know the full process but I saw another youtuber do it once and it doesn't look too hard, for the most part it's just shredding paper, makng it wet then spreading the bedding out before it fully dries (so it doesn't dry into a hard clump) I'm sure there's tutorials online if you want to try it out
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who feels kaytee cc is super dusty! Everyone on forums says it’s the least dusty, but I find carefresh much less dusty. I usually mix carefresh, Kaytee, and aspen to kinda combine the pros and balance the cons of all three
I live in Finland. We only had pine bedding available until this year, it's really sad. (I always ordered bedding from my friends and family and paid for them in cash.) Thank you for making this video. I always had an asthma attack when changing my hammies bedding at the age of 10... I wish that I was informed back then... Poor hammies...
I normally switch between the Kaytee Clean and Cozy, Carefresh, and the All Living Things paper bedding. I normally have 7 inches of bedding in my hamster's cage as a minimum.
Just a question- how do you manage 7 inches? I usually buy the 85l bag of kaytee and it will only fill half of my cage based upon 7/8 inches. I find it very expensive (this bag for me in the UK is £22) just wondering if I'm doing something wrong 🤣😭 maybe I need to fluff it out a bit more lol
@@kimmy9310 i use carefresh as you pay £20 for one bag but lasts at least 4-5 months (i have a large 100cm × 50cm cage with 7+ inches of bedding) it does not compact after a while aswell!!

I really like and prefer kaytee over carefresh because of the softness. Carefresh is really hard and not the best for me. I mix Aspen and kaytee for my guy. Thankfully it works very well and the Aspen I got is very soft. My guy also used his sand bath really well for his pee. Love ur videos!!
I love your Channel soooooo much and your information has helped me pick the right things for my hamster :) keep doing what you’re doing, World needs more people like you!
That bedding is actually one of my favorites. I find it's great for absorbing urine and a plus side of having white bedding it that it's so easy to see the yellow when you're spot cleaning. When you pack it down it's really great for holding stable burrows too.
Dude, I completely understand why you wear a mask while cleaning a cage because of the dust. I have to too, it's miserable dealing with all of the dust
I realise that this is a year old now, but just wanted to mention this since I don't think anyone else has. With paper bedding, you'll want to compact it down as you're putting it in, you don't really want it to be fluffed up or anything. Fluffed up bedding doesn't really hold up burrows as well as bedding that is compact. And, like you said, fluffed up bedding compacts down over time, which can lead to your bedding depth going under the minimum (6 inches). Yes, it does mean that you'll need to use more bedding in order to reach the minimum, but it also means that you don't have to worry about not having enough bedding depth.
I am also sensitive to dusty hamster bedding, so I understand what your saying. Also, my favorite bedding is the All Living Things bedding from Petsmart and aspen shavings from Walmart because you can get a large bag for very inexpensive - only like $5!
Yes my hamster always makes the bedding flat and it looks like less then it was before so sometimes I fluff it up in places he doesn’t sleep or lay. And I use kaytee clean and cozy. Finally someone besides me feels the same and does the same thing! So glad you made this video!
hey munchie! just wanted to let you know with kaytee clean and cosy you do need to compact it to make sure it holds burrows well and so it doesnt collapse!
I just ordered the 84l pack from Amazon and I’m so excited for it to arrive! I normally buy it from pets at home and get the 49l pack but I just found it on Amazon and it’s waaay cheaper! And I didn’t know they did the 84l size pack until I saw it there which is great because I always feel like I need a little more than is in the 49l pack to properly cover my cage. Now I just realised that this is not interesting at all and only I could get excited about something like this :,)
When I kept rats, I remember I used to sift the giant bags of Carefresh with a kitchen sifter to try to get the dust out. The things we do for our furry friends
Thank you for sharing this! I have been considering adding a hamster to our clan and all the information you have shared has been so beneficial. I feel more confident that I'll be able to provide him/her with the very best care.

I first used it for my hamster that I rescued (she was 1 and a half when I got her and passed away at 3 and a half) and used it when I got my mice, so I used it for about 3 years. The only time my hamster got an upper respiratory infection was when I used aspen bedding for a short period of time (I had used it for only a week or two when she got it, and I used a brand that wasn’t really dusty, and that was recommended by many people on the hamster hideout forum)
Pine doesn't just cuase respiratory problems.it also cuases internal organ damage due to phenols. Phenols are solid toxin in pine that can not be removed by kiln dry due to being soild. Also your hamster was probaly allergic to aspen or the aspen you got was actually dusty(a good dust test is to stir the bedding up and see how much dust flies up or take a few handfuls and drop it).
Thank you so much for the info! I've been using a mix of aspen shavings and CareFresh, which is unfortunately not holding the burrows for my Syrian. Does this bedding hold the burrows and not collapse? Any suggestions for bedding brands/combos that will hold burrows??
I say this with love to all in the hamster community, hoping people want to treat their friends as good as they can. According to not random pet owners, but to science …Thing is, burrowing hamsters need at a minimum 20 cm to have a chance to even start a burrow system. And too fluffed up paper bedding doesn't work for stability reasons, so compact it some. There's been studies that show hamsters get so much more satisfied given 40 cm bedding. So if your syrian hamster never seems happy, give them at least 40 cm of bedding (over a big area) and see how they probably get better living their best life underground where they feel comfortable. :) Best would be 1 meter btw. Give them some starting tunnels downwards, of course. Hope this helps someone!
for my syrian i have 1/3 of his 40 gallon a shallow later of aspen, this side has his wheel, a hide and usually where i place a dish of snacks. the other 2/3 of the tank is paper bedding mixed with hay to help it hold better!
I found a few oddly colored pieces in this bedding. I know it is made of recycled materials, but I somehow found a partly intact sticker with a bar code on it. I am a little bit worried. Has anyone else had this problem? I’ve had it in multiple batches of the same stuff.
Ik this was months ago, but I've seen this happening a lot on Amazon. Personally I've never experienced it because as i saw the issue occurring often on amazon, i started buying it in the store so i could look at the bag and see if anything is in it but I've never had in issue from buying this brand in person.
Glad you talked about bedding. I use that bedding for my hamsters and bunnies. It's great and fluffy, absorbable. The only problem is with my bunnies...I put it in their litter boxes with their hay, and when it's just put in and new, they will eat the paper bedding instead of the hay. Is it dangerous for them?
I only use kaytee clean and cozy and oxbow critter bedding. It is less dusty to me. Question for u and I hope u will help. Will you please do a video on trimming hamsters nails that are squirmy? My dwarf hamster Rocky needs her nails done. Her nails are so long and I am afraid she will hurt herself. I usually take her to the vet but because of the virus they wont see her until the 30th. I tried to do it myself but she is so squirmy. I love her so much and I want her to be safe. I don't want her injured.
Hi Munchie! Greetings from Finland 😊 I found your channel around a week ago and been watching lot of your videos. We bought our first dwarf hamster little over a month ago and I've been researching hamstercare before and after we bought him, your channel is great for that purpose, thank you for that 😊 One question came to me after watching this video. I've been watching also ErinsAnimals and Victoria Raechel and haven't heard any of you mention hemp bedding in your videos. Is it that it's not so commonly used or just you don't have it there? Or is it something that you won't even think to use? Because we are using hemp bedding for our hamster and in a couple of Finnish hamster groups they also recommend it as a bedding. Just out of curiosity wanted to know why isn't that option mentioned 😊 At the end I want to thank you for a great channel and for the work you do for all those little creatures!
Marika Here in the U.S it is not available in pet stores. Y’all on the other side of the world have much better things available for small animals lol!
Hello Jessica!! Have you tried fitch? I know it's over in the UK here but just wondering if you've tried it out. I can get a 10kg bale for £23 or a 20kg bale for £36 I've found it's allot cheaper than commercial brands, maybe you could review it if you can get your hands on it! I love this bedding it's care fresh but less dusty
Hi got a question for you. Does your Kaytee bedding look like strands? I bought a bag on Amazon and the texture and stuff is just different from the Kaytee bedding that I’m used to. I’m very worried and confused. Thanks and great video
I use clean and cozy and all living things I kinda swap between the 2 also do you have any advice I'm fighting ants in my guinea pig and mouse room I've seen my mice scratching a lot lately I've disinfected the entire room and did a full clean of the cages I don't know how to get rid of them and not harm my animals I'm open to any options
I used Carefresh but the quality went downhill the past year. It was really hard & musty & difficult to burrow in. My hamster had respiratory issues & I switched her bedding to Kaytee clean & cozy which she absolutely loved. It was still dusty but not as bad. Unfortunately my hamsters lungs were too damaged & she passed away even after vet treatments & daily care.
In Colombia ist so schwer to find substract. The people only sell that kind of wood rest. 😔 I try to make myself with normal kitchen paper. All for love to my Apolo 🐹
my syrian used to dig into all the corners of the crate she was in, then pee on the plastic bottom :| That's why I use shredded paper and carefresh with other bits of recyable tunnels etc. Cuz she's a nightmare xD Luckily I never had a fluffy enough bedding for her to walk across or have issues with.
Our gerbils have paper and Aspen bedding. When I get Oxbow hay for our guinea pigs I'm going to add that too. They're also going to get more stuff in their cage because it's kinda depressing rn
I had an old rabbit who had troubles with dusty bedding too... unfortunately getting her to wear a mask wasn't really an option :P (I found a cleaner alternative and now that I have a lot less rabbits I just use that for all of them.)
I wish you could talk a little bit more about Syrians personality. My female Syrian never seem to be happy even though I had her in a detolf enclosure. She always wanted to scape, I had to put her back in the Previews cage. I haven’t seen her trying to scape from that one. Is it possible that bigger enclosure are not suitable for some hamster?
Hi my parents don't understand hamster care and won't listen to me about care. He currently has a 240sq inch cage which I know is WAY to small. What should I do?
I would advise to find trusted resource (like a hamster group site) and show that to your parents. Find studies that show bigger enclosers are better... I believe there's some links in the description of this video that might assist you.
Do you have a plastic large bin at home? Perhaps holding some sort of storage. Clean it out and DIY it yourself. Good luck, you’re a kid with access to the internet, if you want to make a larger cage you have a ton of resources.
The upshot of having paper-based bedding is not just that is easy to clean when you've got a hamster that pees in a corner it also means that you're less likely to introduce parasites, like red mites, or lice, or even fleas. I had a major red mite problem last year. I seem to have eliminated the mites, but I refuse to use wood based bedding again because I had such problems with it.
I use katee clean and cozy. The only thing that I have found is that when my Syrian hamster walks and runs on it, it packs down. So I’m trying to use care fresh and a little bit of clean and cozy. Another question is can I use extra Oder control or not?
I dont understand how people use Care Fresh bedding. It is so dusty. If you swirl or shake it around, clouds of dust come off. I use the white Clean & Cozy by Kaytee. Not too dusty, fairly inexpensive, and it is easy to spot soiled bedding. Also I highly recommend if you use all paper bedding, add in some shredded paper from a shredder. It helps the burrows stay up and stronger
If you use a mask for the Kaytee clean & cozy Bedding’s dustiness then isn’t it not safe for the rodents too since they have more sensitive respiratory systems?
You have to let the bedding settle. I was purposefully fluffing it up. Any paper bedding you'll use is going to contain some sort of dust. The worst one of them all is carefresh. But I use the mask for all bedding, including Aspen. I just have issues with dust going into my nose.
My order of it came today!! I got 85l I have a Alaska and my hamster has wood shavings currently so do I mix the sawdust and kaytee not to scare her? Or just full on switch to it , also how do I made a perch for her water bowl?
I want to say 3/4 switch. But wood shavings are reaallyy bad, so I would honestly get it all out as soon as possible. But that would be me. I did the same thing with mine. I couldn’t forgive myself to let my hamster live any minute longer in the wood shavings.
Why isn't it okay to mix Aspen and paper bedding for hampsters? I'm about to get one and this is what I thought would work out best. Please give me info on why or why not. It's the Aspen, which I heard was good, and then paper bedding. Thanks for your help!
I use aspen and paper bedding I use the aspen to help with insulation and the paper to hold shape. I alternate paper bedding brands between clean and cozy and I forget the other brand name.
No matter what bedding you use, dust particles from the process will be there in the bad. Aspen, paper, hemp although I haven't tried a bag of hemp before, everything that's shredded can have partials. They claim no or low dust but the dust depends on how well the manufacturer is and each bag can come from different parts of the US or other places like Canada. Not one kaytee clean and cozy is the same type of shredded paper.
I need help please! :( My Syrian Hamster is now 1 Year old and I realize that she is not exercising as much as before... is it normal bc she is getting older? Or should I go to the vet? 🧐
I have been using this recycled newspaper bedding for my pair of gerbils, It has a little bit of baking soda in it, is that okay? I just want the best for my girls 😉
I had that same problem in every bale. It was also very similar to shredding toilet paper, not too absorbent and very dusty which makes me think it was just shredded toilet paper so I don't use it
@@nzpaws I still use it and the absorbency has gotten better and the blue peices disappeared completely. I have dwarf and haven't been able to get a sandbox yet so I set up a small tissue box without the plastic he chew and hide in. It has some bedding and toilet paper in it and whenever i clean his cage there is never and pee on the bottom or any stuck peices.
Seance Cosplay how does it work for your bunny? Is it absorbent enough? I use yesterday’s news but was wondering how Kaytee works. I used to use it for my mice but it just wasn’t very good for odor control. But I was just wondering if it’s enough odor control for bunnies

for my syrian i have 1/3 of his 40 gallon a shallow later of aspen, this side has his wheel, a hide and usually where i place a dish of snacks. the other 2/3 of the tank is paper bedding mixed with hay to help it hold better!
I never noticed how much i watch your mouth when you talk ,until its covered.. lol love your content, been benging the kast cpl of weeks
@@tehyaross5479 that’s very odd, but thank you for letting me know!
Glad you talked about bedding. I use that bedding for my hamsters and bunnies. It's great and fluffy, absorbable. The only problem is with my bunnies...I put it in their litter boxes with their hay, and when it's just put in and new, they will eat the paper bedding instead of the hay. Is it dangerous for them?
hi. i love your videos and my hamster is super happy.
I use Kaytee and sophresh and it works for my mice
@@aballetgal6788 thank you for your answer 😊 That's why I thought it wasn't mentioned but had to be sure 😄
I have katye clean&cozy too🥰
I’m so early!
I used Fitch years ago when I had a lot of hamsters. I think I'll be ordering a bag when I get paid on Thursday, I *totally* forgot this existed 😂
Wait who is Jessica?
@@amphibiland7315 her name. Her name isnt munchie
jasmine M Oh.
Hi got a question for you. Does your Kaytee bedding look like strands? I bought a bag on Amazon and the texture and stuff is just different from the Kaytee bedding that I’m used to. I’m very worried and confused. Thanks and great video
No, it's not supposed to be like that, eek 😯😨
Hi I loved the video! Does this bedding give any smell.i have had this problem befor
You could try diatomaceous earth.
I get kaytee bedding and food for my hamster Munchie and brown and white bedding and lab block and seed mix all the time
Ok so what is the BEST bedding for hamsters? Mostly serian hamster
I used both clean and cozy + aspen
I’ve been trying out different brands of paper, I like carefresh best, and I mix it with carefresh natural
In Colombia ist so schwer to find substract. The people only sell that kind of wood rest. 😔 I try to make myself with normal kitchen paper. All for love to my Apolo 🐹
Hamsters and gerbils aren’t even legal where I live yet here I am binge watching all your videos! Keep up your amazing work 💕
I have found some dangerous hamster hacks can you please review as some of my friends are doing the for their hamsters
Thoughts on small pet select paper bedding?
my syrian used to dig into all the corners of the crate she was in, then pee on the plastic bottom :| That's why I use shredded paper and carefresh with other bits of recyable tunnels etc.
Thnx for this info. 🤓👍🐭
Was there enough hides and toys in the detof? Hamsters need their enclosures to be semi crowded especially in large cages.
I seem to have eliminated the mites, but I refuse to use wood based bedding again because I had such problems with it.
i love the all living things paper bedding its not dusty and its pretty cheap 18$ for 70.6 liters
I got 85l
I have a Alaska and my hamster has wood shavings currently so do I mix the sawdust and kaytee not to scare her? Or just full on switch to it , also how do I made a perch for her water bowl?
dolls_are_my_life 1 don’t use sawdust or wood shavings
Taylor’s Animals which is why he/she ordered the paper bedding. His/her question is if it is okay to throw all wood shavings away at once.
@@brandivanhook2368 mine wasn’t aspen I’ve since got a bigger cage and use Fitch bedding
I use aspen and paper bedding I use the aspen to help with insulation and the paper to hold shape. I alternate paper bedding brands between clean and cozy and I forget the other brand name.
I don't understand. Dust is unsafe for hamsters but katy clean and cozy is highly recommended and is apprently really dusty?
No matter what bedding you use, dust particles from the process will be there in the bad. Aspen, paper, hemp although I haven't tried a bag of hemp before, everything that's shredded can have partials. They claim no or low dust but the dust depends on how well the manufacturer is and each bag can come from different parts of the US or other places like Canada. Not one kaytee clean and cozy is the same type of shredded paper.
Is über better?
I need help please! :( My Syrian Hamster is now 1 Year old and I realize that she is not exercising as much as before... is it normal bc she is getting older? Or should I go to the vet? 🧐
Early!!
I love you munchie!
You and other RUclipsrs inspired me to start my own pet channel! I uploaded my first video yesterday ❤️
Can a 12 in wheel fit in the preview 528
Yep
🥰🥺😍
I have been using this recycled newspaper bedding for my pair of gerbils, It has a little bit of baking soda in it, is that okay? I just want the best for my girls 😉
I have 40%-wood 30%-clean and cozy and 30%-shreded tissue
What type of wood are u using? x
i think he use aspen
He never reply lol
😂😂 Love it 😍😂😂😂
I have noticed some problems with this. I used to find blue peices of stuff that almost looked like tape. It was very worrying
I use this for my rabbits litter Box and my rats enclosure
Seance Cosplay how does it work for your bunny? Is it absorbent enough? I use yesterday’s news but was wondering how Kaytee works. I used to use it for my mice but it just wasn’t very good for odor control. But I was just wondering if it’s enough odor control for bunnies
@@Kira-nu5dd i use cat pellets for my gisnt continental rabbit i reccomend that more
how much was that size??
Idk why, But I would like you to react to vanilla ham ham. Who else agrees and knows vanilla ham ham?
I switched to this beding and my hamster started sneezing. What is a good alternative for kaytee
Carefresh
Just how dusty is it? I'm hoping it isn't too dusty?
