Mr Chomsky tells Emily Maitlis that President Donald Trump's "rhetorical excesses" were undertaken to show "I'm really your defender ... I'm working for you, I'm gonna protect you... while quietly I'm stabbing you in the back constantly".
The November elections will decide who controls Congress, but have also been seen as a referendum on Mr Trump.

I have been learning from Dr. Chomsky since 1988 right after I left the Army. He has been my inspiration and teacher all these many years, and I know I'm a better person for it.
She needs to let Chomsky answer the question before she interrupts him to ask another.
She is vile
@Barbara C She’s your typical shitty BBC journalist.
It's not just her it's the media producers and managers who are fanatical and frantic against freedom of thought and freedom of speech. They only want speech in their narrow perception of it

Noam Chomsky has been on Newsnight countless times over decades. He's probably one of its most popular guests. By all means criticise the BBC, but do so with evidence.
He hasn't been on that much considering the knowledge he has, and the bbc news is a biased organisation run by hacks. Look who they hire, their back round and various studies (LSE) into their bias.
@Sentry Stout He's very smart in politics as well. He's been talking about politics for decades.
@Sentry Stout Good job, you're preforming the basic human function of thinking for yourself, and yet you're flaunting it around like it's an achievement. That's also what I am doing, believe it or not, and I came to the conclusion that Chomsky is "very smart" in the realm of politics. If you don't think that he's smart in politics, perhaps you have some form of bias involved in your thought process?
Nobody even listens to him. His gravelly voice puts everyone to sleep. People just say he's intelligent to virtue signal.

I interviewed Professor Chomsky a few years ago. While we spoke mostly on Linguistics I can't help but marvel at the erudition and the simplicity of this genius.
Sailen, tha's great. Does the genius still believe the Cambodian genocide did not happen?
Tamas I have read more about his Linguistics than his politcs so I am not qualified to comment on the point you raised. I disagree with Professor Chomsky on Israeli Palestinian conflict but it doesn't mean I can't admire his genius. Einstein theorised nonsense such as the cosmological constant and Aristotle thought women had fewer teeth than men! Doesn't stop any one of them from being some of the most enlightened humans of all time. I try to look at people at their best unless they constantly push their worst unto us.
@Violette Wellington like your brain!
@@sailenkatel3436 Sailen, thank you, I see your point. However: When thinking of the cosmological constant the physicist Einstein did nothing but his job and stayed more or less in the field he was an expert on. The opposite applies for Chomsky: He is a linguist but sells his thoughts on economics, politics or history as expert opinions, now even BBC calls him a philosopher. In my opinion, the outcome of that are oviously serious misinterpretations, errors, conspiracy theories and ideology camouflaged as science.
@@tamasmengesha2598 @Tamas Mengesha it's an unusual caption but not inaccurate. I think he's now an emeritus professor so it may be more accurate to describe him by his current practice, which may be leaning a little more towards his philosophical work. He was trained as a philosopher under Goodman and his opinions have at times been the fulcrum of discussion of philosophy of mind, in particular, within the analytic tradition. Journalists and other detractors repeatedly dredge up this apparent position re Cambodia sometime prior to 78. It may have been grossly wrong but I believe he may have been repeating what informed sources were saying at the time. The world only became informed of what had happened after the Vietnamese entered. It's notable that an erroneous scepticism he exercised prior to the availability of knowledge in the 1970s is still brought up every time he speaks or writes anything. That sounds like an ad hominem to me and suggests people struggle with his ideas. I don't agree with him on everything, and he seems to have a combative streak that plays out in his field, but it seems to me if you value democracy and an open society he's doing a great public service in critiquing US power. He's also, in my opinion, one of the 20th century's best philosophers
As I once heard stated, "he is our Modern Day Socrates."
that is actually a very good comparison. Noam Chomsky will forever remind us that he was one of the greats, that is assuming we have a future, if the developed countries of the world stop polluting our skies, and put much more pressure on energy companies to switch to renewable sources.
Charles De Carpas Trotsky was alive in the modern era, dunce.
Absolutely. While the war rages on & on, Chomsky cuts through to the very core ~ way beneath the turbulent distracting surface. The media will always win, but it's good to have a sage about for those who need to hear a word of truth from time to time!
@@smartupworld The problem is that no one in power has to fear a Socrates anymore because nobody gives a damn. There is no threat from the teachings of wisdom today. The "youth of Athens" aren't truly interested anymore (unless it can get some likes on a social media site, etc.).

Brilliant as always.
One of the wisest men alive today. Listen to him.
He hardly even has competition for that title.
Hardly.. he is just another of the Left's talking heads that tell them what they want to hear. He has produced nothing and done nothing but advocate for Socialism. Trump guided the US economy to it's largest growth in 50 years, increased taxes brought into the Federal government by cutting the tax rate for those that drive the economy, which increases employment. Less unemployment means less benefits paid out, more tax paid and more consumers to make purchases. This is basic economics but the left either don't get it or just want the government to run and control business so they can skim as much money as they can.
Look -- you're dumb as fucking shit.
@@wylieecoyote Just a few questions. Who are you and how are you contributing to society or the world or even your neighborhood? Is this your contribbution? You sound ridulous. From the way you write, you sound like you didn't hear what the man said. You just went on the attack. How have you benefitted from the tax cuts for the wealthy (job creators)?
Last question, how many Jobs have you personally introduced into the economy or do you just cheerlead for the 0.01%? I'm just curious.
@@Hayesaxib "Who are you.." ect. is precisely the problem. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I don't need to "be" anybody to have valid points. There are handicapped people that contribute in the best way they can, and that may be through reasoned opinion. The Left values identity politics to the point that people have to justify themselves through victimhood. It is truly despicable and has lead to tremendous death and suffering.
Chomsky claimed that the evil "rich" people were "given" the "donar tax bill which was a gift to the wealthy". Total horseshit. It was their money to begin with. The government adjusted the high rates of the people who are paying 90% of the taxes to a lower rate to cause job growth because businesses can hire more people who in turn pay taxes and purchase things for their families. That caused job growth and the lowest unemployment in 50 years and largest gains in the stock market. The wealthy still pay huge taxes compared to everyone else and they drive our economy.
The opening of new oil fields will not cause an increase of use, but it will lower the outrageous price we are being charged for oil, which is then, in some cases, used to fund terrorists. Reduced dependence on Saudi means the US can be firmer with them on human rights violations and other poor behavior they are responsible for. The US still puts a huge amount of research into clean energy. The Left rejects LFTR nuclear energy, which is totally fail safe using molten salt (Thorium) that is completely clean and safe and is the ONLY technology we currently have that can eliminate fossil fuels.
The Left has a simple formula - take from the rich, skim most of the money and give the scraps to the people to make them dependent on government. Every country that follows this formula crashes. Go live in Venezuela and you will see why they are leaving to come to the US.
