The Best Hike on Maui: Haleakala Sunrise + Sliding Sands Trail + How to Get A Sunrise Permit

  • Looking for the absolute best hike on Maui? A Haleakala summit sunrise followed by the Haleakala Sliding Sands trail will not disappoint!
    If there is only one hike you are going to do on Maui, this has to be it. But, to see the Haleakala sunrise, you will need a permit to reserve your spot, and these sell out in less than a second. To make sure you successfully snag yours, we're showing you how to get a Haleakala sunrise permit at the end of the video.
    Definitely don't pass up the chance to hike or trail run down into the Haleakala crater on the Sliding Sands trail. We highly recommend not just turning around and hiking back up the way you came once you reach the end of the Sliding Sands. For the most epic hike (and some of our favorite views of the entire day) follow the loop we outline here along the Foot Trail and around the Gulch.
    Seriously, between seeing one of the best sunrises of our lives and adventuring through the brilliant changing colors and clouds of the Haleakala volcano, this has to be the best hike on maui!

    Thank you for the Maui hiking recommendations! My partner and I just got back from our honeymoon in Maui. We tried out all of your recommendations, except one of your Road to Hana stops. We loved everything!
    My trip highlight was backpacking in Haleakala for a few days. It was very serene and free of crowds.
    I’ll miss Maui but happy to be back to much more affordable lodging and food. Lol

      Wow huge congratulations on your relationship and an obviously awesome honeymoon! And thank you so much for telling us that you used our recommendations -- it really makes our day to think we contributed a little to your special trip. Meanwhile, totally agree about the prices in Hawaii right now -- we wanted to go to Kauai next month but once we saw all those extra hospitality taxes they added this year we were like it's ok, we're good here on the mainland. But there's no denying that if you take price out of the equation (as you correctly did for a honeymoon!), Hawaii is the best place ever. Very happy for you guys! ❤️

    Good job guys! Another tip for those having trouble with the site (Haleakala Reservations) is to randomly check your date of interest within 60 days and the office reinserts availability when they get one or two tickets back for whatever reason. I watched like a hawk today and got a day within my stay window and lucked out. If you don't want to wait for what is now a 2-day prior release policy, watch like a bandit or have all of the people in your group ready to pounce! Listen to E when she says to have your account signed in because if you pounce and you're logged off, "no soup for you!" Luck to everyone!

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  Год назад

      It's a bit hard to explain, but historically we're actually safer running than hiking. I think it's because people (including us) often take their eyes of the trail when hiking (especially in a beautiful view area), which is when things like sprained ankles tend to happen. When running, the focus is on where the feet or going and we've never had an injury that way. ❤️

    I've hiked and camped in the crater so many times. It never got old. Such a unique place on earth.. If you ever get a chance to do it again if you have more time I would recommend hiking across the crater to Paliku where you can camp overnight. The stars are amazing. Then hike out the next day going out Switchback. This will give you the total crater experience. It's about 12 miles each way, so camping overnight is the way to go! Love watching your videos!

    We are going to Haleakala next month! Couple questions:
    1. Is Sliding Sands the Best Trail & how long is it? Are there other Trails here?
    2. We are going for Sunset. We want to give ourselves plenty of time to hike before Sunset (maybe 2-3 hours). We are staying in Wailea. What time in the afternoon or midday should we get there to hike Sliding Sands & view the sunset? I think sunrise will probably be around 5ish since we are doing it on November 11th (right after changing our clocks the weekend before)

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 года назад +1

      Oh heck yeah!! You will have the best time ever on this trail if you get good weather (fingers crossed!). So there are other trails but you def want Sliding Sands, and if possible the Foot Trail loop that we took as well. It's about 14 miles and 3000 feet of climbing all in, and at high elevation, so you can determine your speed based on that. For us it took about 6 hours with filming and some nice long breaks -- prob would have been about 5 hours without filming and breaks. But we are fairly fast compared to most hikers. If you're normal speed hikers, plan on 7-8 hours for the full thing with breaks. Drive up depends on traffic, so check Waze or similar app the day before to get a precise sense of how long. But it's kind of a long slow drive to the top, so most likely 1 1/2 to 2 hours drive time. That means you'd leave around 7 or 8 in the morning.

      Hey, Rose, thanks so much! Excited for you to get to experience Haleakala. To answer your questions, you do have to drive up to Haleakala. It takes about 1.5-2 hours from the western side of Maui. The hike we did takes you down into the crater, but then we hiked back out and back to the car. I believe if you hike all the way down, you end in Kaupo which is like 8000FT more of down climbing so... long day haha. The trailhead for Sliding Sands is very close to where you watch sunrise. We parked at the Summit Sunrise viewing area (very top) and then took the car down to the visitor center after, which is where the trailhead is. But you could also leave your car at either the sunrise area or the visitor center, as they are very close together. Hope that helps you!

      That’s so awesome to hear it worked on the first try! We are stoked for you to see this for yourself in person. Regarding where to watch, head all the way to the summit but do NOT go to the summit sunrise viewing platform. We saw that it was way overcrowded with people. Instead, to have the views all to yourself, across the parking lot from the viewing area there is a small trail that will take you just a few steps up onto a hill. As you’re looking at the sun, you will be to the left of all the crowds and far away so that you’ll have peace and solitude. Just make sure to stay in the trail, as the rangers will come talk to you if you veer off even just a bit!

    I would click the add to cart button right at 7 AM on google chrome and it said "we are trying to get you a spot there are a lot of people trying to book this reservation don't refresh the page" or whatever, and after it finished loading the tickets would always be sold out. That's exactly what happened to us the first two times of trying, but I definitely also messed up the way I refreshed the page before clicking at 7AM. When did you go? I'm guessing that because Maui has been one of the only places people could travel, the pandemic surges have just made it so much harder to get a permit. I understand to click "add to cart" at the right time, but after that do you just hurry and checkout whats in your cart? Does the permit cost money at checkout? Is the permit a code scan or a printout? Are there any fees upon arrival at the peak? And lastly how many people are allowed per permit, or does every individual wanting to go have to get lucky in the permit process? Thank you so much if you have time to answer!

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  3 года назад +1

      Hey there, thanks so much! Stoked for you to come along for the future adventures :) All good questions about the permit system. So once you click add to cart, don't panic if it takes some time to load.The site gets overloaded with people so it can take a minute to go through. Then once you snag a permit it takes you to the checkout page, where you have around 5 minutes to complete your purchase (maybe more - I don't remember exactly). It's just $1 for the permit, but you do need a credit card to buy it. I would just make sure you have a credit card already in the recreation.gov system to make it easy. They just asked for the name of the person who purchased the permit + a photo ID at the entrance, but I printed the reservation confirmation they sent me just to be safe. You do have to either pay a $30 entrance fee at the park (good for 3 days which is awesome if you go to the Kaupo side of the park later in the week), or, even better, if you have a national parks pass you can use that instead. The permit is good for the entire vehicle, so anyone you can fit in your vehicle gains access with the permit. Hope that helps! - E

    Didnt they change it now that you have to book for only the next day? I can’t see the option to book for one week in advance :(

      Oh that’s crazy. They’ve been using the one week ahead method for so long! And it was still the method as of February so I’m not sure why it changed!

    I don't get why all the running. I tried to go on a hike with a group there and people were dressed in nylons and jogging clothes. If it's gorgeous why not just take your time to hike it. Is that even safe when you have thin mountain air and what about drinking water, oxygen etc ..

      That's a good question, Theresa. For us it's mostly a question of filming. If we get out faster than everyone else, then we can get beautiful shots of the whole hike without other people accidentally photo-bombing them. It makes a real difference to the beauty and quality of the video. ❤️

    Do you need another permit to hike the sliding trail? And is there a time limit of how long you need to stay inside the park, like for example is the permit good to come back for the sunset the same day in case the sunrise will not be as visible?

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  3 года назад +1

      Great questions! There's two different pieces here: first, the permit is only necessary if you want to see the sunrise. Anyone can enter without a permit AFTER 7AM. The second piece is the park entrance fee, which is $30. The entrance fee will give you access to the Haleakala National Park (which will include access to the Kaupo side as well including the Pools of O'heo and Pipiwai trail/bamboo forest) for 3 days. That means you can definitely stick around for sunset (and can even leave and come back later, though it's a long drive to anywhere else so that might be tough). Or you can come back for sunset the next day as well. But the permit is specific to the sunrise only on the day you reserved. Also, if you have a national parks pass, then the entrance fee is waived.

      We kept saying how crazy it was that it was so very silent because, aside from the flowery plants that stole Adam's heart, the wildlife was pretty much non existent. Though, we have heard there are bats.... kinda glad we didn't run into those! - E
