Great job on this one as well, I see you're knocking down the big boys KOM's, ruffling their feathers for sure! Good luck on Palomar Mt South Grade (Taco shop to Summit Stop Sign) I see your already top 10 on it. Horner's had Palomar since 2012.
I rode with with a fully loaded touring bike in one day from Kahului in 2019. You could have done this several times by the time I got to the top! Great stuff!
Congrats! Did that climb a little over 5 years ago (no where near your pace though) and it's by far the hardest, most amazing ride I've ever done. I was lucky to have the views you had and really got to soak it in and really see what was just accomplished on the downhill reward side.
to put this in perspective. i was once on top of that mountain to take the tourist ride down on bikes. i puffed just pedalling in the parking lot, as not used to the elevation. Amazing job.
I got nailed with a brutal headwind on my 1st attempt. Made it to the Ranger Station where you pay to continue, 11 more miles. Legs said no more. It's on my bucket list to complete though. Mike Woods as in the Canadian world tour pro? He was 2nd in today's Volta Ciclista a Catalunya stage. You are in good company.
The very same Mike Woods. He went out to Maui at least twice and did Haleakala. It’s really cool to see him winning consistently at the highest level. I’m a big fan
@@DrakeDeuel I'm from Toronto originally so it's nice to see our fellow Canuck Woodsy doing so well. Also nice to see Ryder's bike in the store. He used to live on Maui in the winter. How cool is that?
Nicely done! Come to the Bay Area, you can take Mt Hamilton and Mt Diablo’s KOMs. If you’re up for shorter stuff: Old La Honda would be a nice notch on your belt as well!
Gratz on the KOM Drake - well earned. An awesome ride that I've managed to do four times, but at a much slower pace. Rob Britton bolted past me on the way up a few years ago.
Great video and ride summary... I wanna do this climb, but I’m definitely NOT going after your KOM! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I just want to check the box that I tried/did it... 🤙🏽
I did it a few years back...amazing...25-30mph headwinds when I did it but big grin entire way up...and yea at about 8k feet up you could really feel the altitude and impact on breathing/watts...it feels like you are in a very special/spiritualistic place
The climb from Lone Pine to the trailhead to Whitney is killer (then summit the trail in summer a section cut into granite needs the strap-on spikes for ice, the other trail also worthy). Farther north, leave Bishop, CA, use the CCC road, at Tom's Place the Rock Creek Rd is a glacial canyon gets to 10,200ft paved, killer, always stopped for ice cream if the store was open. hikingwalking.com/index.php/destinations/ca/ca_ses/mammoth_lakes/little_lakes/little_lakes_detail Cheers 🍺
I have climbed Haleakala 4 1/2 times in my life. (The 1/2 came when I decided at about 5,000” altitude that I was on vacation and didn’t want to finish the rest of the ride). I took WAY longer than you did. It is a very special climb.
Drake, congrats on the KOM. It's hard to describe how variable the weather conditions can get, glad you had such a great day. Looking forward to riding it rather than driving the rental car someday.
Now you need to go a try your hand at the solo Letras climb in Colombia ;). I mean, you could try for the overall, but those first 20 or so spots are all during races.
My one visit to haleakala in 2012 and it was wall to wall cars going up and down it seemed like. It was very cold at the observatory, too. Only two cyclists going up.
Wow, amazing job. I plan to cycle the Haleakala crater later this year. I ride my bike a lot but on flat surface. Do I need to prepare my fitness in case of altitude sickness? Please let me know. Is it more difficult than trekking?
I've ridden up Mt. Baldy but never full gas. I know that some of the segments over there are pretty unobtainable because they were done in racing, but I'll have a rip over there sometime.
Awesome! I wonder if these 12+ mph/ headwind KOMs are going to fall considerably once people start recruiting ebikes/ escooters to draft. Or is that considered not kosher? I'm guessing the only reason people didn't use "motor pacing" before is the exhaust fumes.
In my opinion drafting a vehicle would be cheating. There aren’t technically any rules for Strava, but drafting would be an enormous advantage and kind of ruin Strava if everyone started doing it.
But then a lot of KOMs already involve some drafting, either as part of a stage race or when training with teammates. More so for QOMs, a lot of which are set when training with male teammates. If batteries are where the line is drawn, you could find 6 other people of high fitness and have them take turns pulling/ jump in the chase car for rest :-D Someone is going to do it!
Have you ever tried climbing Mauna Kea or Mauna Loa? Edit: Never mind, I just got to the part where you mentioned it. Isn’t the Mauna Loa climb higher because it goes to above 11,000ft?
Yeah, Mauna Loa goes to 11,000. It’s not as cool of a climb though in my opinion. Mauna Kea is epic in its own way, but it’s pretty different with the sand section.
Hey Drake. I recently drove up Haleakala and saw that a passing cyclist had to pay at the ranger station. Did you have to do the same? I feel like it would affect anyone trying to attempt the Strava Segment.
Great effort on such a beautiful climb. Could you possibly give more info on the mix that you use for your hydration? I’m headed to do Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa this summer.
Thank you. I've been using the same drink mix for about a year now. It's from a company based in Colorado called Tailwind Nutrition. It's a pretty mild flavor, and you can get in a lot of calories per bottle. amzn.to/3cs0c6y Good luck with the climbs on the Big Island! Mauna Kea is epic.
@@DrakeDeuel thank you! On your longer endurance type rides, do you find that the hydration mix is enough to sustain you or do you also add in a protein of some sort)
I always start my rides with two full bottles of mix, but I’ll also bring some snacks like a cliff bar or some candy for the ride as well. I usually don’t have protein during rides, I just stick to carbs.
Congratulations. Looking forward to getting this KOM next year 2023. Now that I’ve lost 100 lbs I have another 40 lbs to lost. Being 220 lb would be very difficult to get it. I figure I need to be 150 - 160 lb
