I'm a former Harvard rower and current software engineer at Zwift. I ride my bike on the weekends and go after Strava KOMs.
Waimea Canyon - the Grand Canyon of the Pacific
Taking the KOM on the beautiful Waimea Canyon on the Hawaiian island of Kauai.
There is an annual hill climb race up this road called "Pedal to the Meadow" which was the main segment that I was attempting. I kept riding for the longer climb to the very top.

I watched this video and it inspired me to travel to Maui and climb Haleakala on my Brompton! No KOMs from me, but bragging rights on the Brompton. What an experience. Thanks for the inspiration Drake!
Yore dad is filming you but who is filming you and your dad?
Freaking props to you. You’re an animal.
Very impressive man! I ride the crater often and it's one of the most challenging rides around.
Great video! Always inspiring!
Well done!
Post more videos! Please!
340 watts, I’m laughing if I do 34
Just a game-changing vid. The autonomous drove footage is next level. But not as impressive as your wattage! Well done, lad.
Outstanding! 👍
Did you drink any water during that effort?
No, less than 90 minutes I don’t think you really need anything
@ Drake: how tall are you man? Seems like a huge saddle to bar drop (which is actually not bad for climbing)
I’m ~71 inches/181cm The front end is slammed, so it’s a pretty aggressive drop but not crazy unusual I don’t think
@@DrakeDeuel Awesome Dude! Can you give me the exact model number of the IEI rims?
SR30TC26H Road Wheels Brake System : Disc Version : SL:320±15G Hole Type : Without Rim Bead Hole(Tubeless Ready) Weave : UD Finish : Matte Decal : None Valve Kits : Add Valve Stem Hub Brand : Extralite Disc Straight Pull Front Axle : 12*100mm Rear Axle : 12*142mm Freehub Body : Shimano Road 11S Disc Brake System : 6-Bolt Holes Count F/R : 24H/24H Spoke : Carbon spoke Nipple : Aluminum Black
Wow, amazing job. I plan to cycle the Haleakala crater later this year. I ride my bike a lot but on flat surface. Do I need to prepare my fitness in case of altitude sickness? Please let me know. Is it more difficult than trekking?
You’ll be okay, just start easier than you normally would because the altitude will catch up to you
Drake, do you think a lightweight, rim-brake aero frame would be faster on an effort like this?
Definitely the rim brake version of that SuperSix Evo would be faster up Piuma. It’s just a balance of weight/aero though, nobody is making modern aero rim brake bikes
How tall are you?
71 inches or 180cm
Looks like you gotta go back and take this one back! Who the heck is Sean quinn
Yep, gonna be tough to get that one back
55 psi??
I have a sensitive gooch
When genetics and smart training match together!
right on, dude!
58:02 is fastest time in annual race. (2014)
16 lb bike, standing start aka official
Really nice video!
Riding in paradise while we are freezing are ass off in the Midwest. Are you on track bars?
Not track bars, they’re modified BMC bars, 28cm wide on the hoods
Nice, need more of Dad, and Dad needs a Creo.
Love the KOM vids Drake. Where did you get your custom cockpit fabricated? Looks like 28cm?
It’s a BMC one piece handlebar that’s been cut and put back together to be narrower. It was done by Len Lochmiller out of San Diego. You can find him on Facebook if you want him to sort something similar out for you.
@@DrakeDeuel Just met Len recently. I had some paint work done by him, good dude...Well done Drake!
nice!
Nice job Drake and Dad!
Good jobbers!!!
Congratulations. Looking forward to getting this KOM next year 2023. Now that I’ve lost 100 lbs I have another 40 lbs to lost. Being 220 lb would be very difficult to get it. I figure I need to be 150 - 160 lb
Do you currently work with a coach for training?
No, I don’t
so this dude just goes after Phil ayy? should do a bunch of the true climbers KOMS
Great vid! What road are you climbing from the start?
I’m on Piuma Road the whole time, you can see the street signs of the intersection shortly after the beginning of the video
@@DrakeDeuel Thanks! Is the climb easier than Las Flores?
What a ride. Great video. Well done and thank you for sharing! ❤
What was the exact issue with your rear hub in the Safa video? I got the exact same problem with my wheel right now lmaooo. It's driving me crazy.
I don’t really know what the issue was. Eventually my hub exploded, and I had to buy a new wheel.
@@DrakeDeuel oh damn… Im gonna have a shop look at the hub specifically. 🤦♂️
EIE SR30TC26H super light wheelset build with Extralite Disc straight pull hubs ,carbon spoke and aluminum black nipples ,final weight less than 1000g.
Do Gibraltar in Santa Barbara gotta get sub 27:12
I couldn't believe it when I got a notification that you uploaded a new video Drake. Great job and congratulations on the KOM!
Mt Washington, as in North East LA Mt. Washington ?
No, New Hampshire en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Washington_Auto_Road_Bicycle_Hillclimb
All the best to you, missed your videos. Didn’t know about the injury. Hope healing and recovery is going well. Keep crushing!
Thank you for sharing!!! 👍🏽
Has anyone thought to use a drone as a fan to stay cooler on climbs or as other aerodynamic assistance? I'm sure that'll be something to address as drone technology advances.
They used to say that the French TV helicopters would fly close behind Bernard Hinault to help push him along during time trials!
@@mikemelbrooks O, interesting.
Do a full video on that handlebar modification please! . You hit the nail right on the head, these one piece setups are way too wide and you never see companies making sizes below 40mm for some reason.
Amazing climb! Does your bike fit in your car with both wheels on? Nice car by the way.
No, I have to take both wheels off. It’s not hard though, and I can fit a few bikes in there with the wheels off
It’s good you can fit a few in there, I wouldn’t have thought more than one! Happy cycling 😺
what kind of pace do you run at? and surface? 🙂
I only run on dirt, dirt Mulholland if you’re local to LA. Usually just steady pace, like 7:20-7:40 average with like 1000ft of elevation gain.
How much were the wheels if you don’t mind me asking?
“Only” $1700 quite the bargain compared to my other Cadex wheels which are $2k for just one
The custom bars super sick! Who did the carbon work?
Len Lochmiller out of San Diego. Look him up on Facebook if you want, that’s how I got in touch with him
What saddle is that?
Specialized power Arc, pretty common one. I have a raw carbon saddle that I’m considering running for Mt. Washington that saves 60g
Although not as monumental as say Flores or Decker, I think either Phil or Froome still hold the kom for Palisades drive - pch to the summit. ~4 miles @ 7% with the last 2 miles averaging almost 11%, it’s actually a lot more difficult than a lot of the neighboring climbs imo. I think that kom has held since 2018 or 2019 too, so I’ve been expecting to see your face pop up there for a while now. Any plans to give it a go?
Is this the segment? strava.app.link/YLJpPJ2dusb I hadn’t heard of it before, or ridden over there, but I see that Phil has it, so I’ll add it to the list.
Yeah looks way better at the front!! Congratulations 🎊 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 very professional as you!!
Great effort. Quite a recovery from your injury to be riding so well so soon.
