Awesome. PSA for anyone who hasn’t done this - Don’t do this without bringing multiple layers and full finger gloves unless you somehow know the weather will be perfect. Descending for that long through cold mist can make you so cold it’s hard to control the bike.
Definitely! When I did it I had distinctly different weather experiences on the ride at different elevations; cold, warm, hot, dry, pouring rain, no wind and 30mph wind. Amazing experience and incredible views from the top.
My rental bike didn't have enough low gears. The legs gave out at the 25 mile marker after battling a constant headwind. I'll bring my S & S equipped Moots next time. With a 24 - 42 low gear, it should be no trouble ticking off this major bucket list item and adding it to the Stelvio, Mt. Evans and Pikes Peak. Allez!
@@TedKing1 yeah it was pretty epic road trip…50 miles 50 states 50 days…couldn’t have done it without friends and family (you know how important riding buddies are)… BTW: loving your adventures…keep them coming
Did it in 2000 back in my pro days from Paia to the top in a bit over 3 hours. One of the best days on a bike ever! Now its on my bucket list to do it again cripple style on my handcycle. :)
Geez...14.89 average MPH over the course...I gotta stop watching stuff like this cuz I'm so slow. 🤣
On my bucket list; need to go up 3x for an everesting.

First time doing this I had to hitch a ride from strangers who happened to have an empty bike rack on their car. Good times!
Did this in 2014. Thought the descent was more difficult and nerve racking. A line of blue hairs behind me afraid to pass me at 40 mph
now thats a switch up from 30 degree vermont riding ! Amazing
Did that one with the help of Maui Cyclery. Ex-pro running that shop. Had a great day out 👍

My favorite climb of all time! Glad you got to experience Hawaii.
What a ride and an awesome descent. Take care, Al
well done brotha!! fun to see this quick turnaround on videos, hope you’re chillin a bit too 🤙🏻
Very much appreciated. It ain't easy, but figure it's relevant to get this kind of turnaround!
Not quite perfect, It would need a Hazel cameo for that
that descent was faster than Safa's, lol
Great vid! Brings back memories…just rode it 20 Oct…my final US state…all 50 states in 50 days ending up the epic Haleakala
Dang. You rode 50 states in 50 days?! That's cool.

Best ride! Went up it in 2018! Was amazing!
Ride to Kipahulu with a destination of Lindbergh's grave from the south side (not Hana highway). Adventures await!

Wow... what a beautiful ride. Thanks for posting.
Made it look so easy.
did it with a 25mph south headwind solo...beautiful but argh
Super jealous I hate climbing with a fiery passion but this looks like a beautiful way to destroy my legs.
Aloha! I love this climb too. I am lucky enough to look at it every morning when I wake up. I have done it several times over the years.
One trip up Haleakala better than 20 trips up Wes White Hill? :o)
On my bucket list of rides to do.
love that beast of a climb!
Loved the video - thank you!
Very awesome sir
Mauna Kea next? Cycle to the Sun 06/24
My understanding is it's currently "cycle to the snow storm at the top". Either way, not this trip. Someday!
