  • We’ll be climbing Haleakala Crater by bike on Hawai'i’s Maui Island. Ranked the second-hardest climb in the US (after Mauna Kea, Hawai’i), this is over 10,000 ft. (3,048m) of climbing in 35 miles. Hang on for the decent!

It's a sin to pause during a climb except when it's absolutely inevitable.

I usually ride by that rule but a 10,000 ft climb was a big one for me.

This was such a great story of your amazing ride. I just finished this last month and it was the hardest ride in my biking life. Such a good video

Nice ride….it’s on my bucket list, not sure if I’m fit enough to make it all the way though

You can always try! Do enough training to put yourself in the best possible shape and then give it your best on the day.

Thanks for posting this and congrats on the climb! I'm thinking about riding it next Feb. Any places to refill water bottles on the way up or do you need a hydration pack?

    • @CyclingAlaska

I refilled at the National Park Headquarters Visitor's Center located at 7,000ft. There is another Visitor's Center at 9,740-foot elevation which also has water. Much earlier in your ride, you'll pass through the small town of Makawao (at 1500ft) which is a nice place to stop for coffee and/or water refill.

Congrats on completing this ride! Huge accomplishment! What time of year are weather conditions most suitable for this ride? Thx

There are three places to get water along the way from Paia. 2 places before the main ascending road and then at the visitors center at 7000 ft.

Epic climb! The decent looks like a blast, too. Maui has got some excellent cycling.

My Strava Segment for the "Haleakala "World's Longest Paved Climb"" (Distance 34.48mi; Elevation Gain 9,826ft; Avg Grade 5.3%) says 6 hours and 33 minutes. But of course then you have to get home. www.strava.com/segments/638944

@@CyclingAlaska Thank you for replying. I am planning on doing this ride next year. Any suggestions on training. I currently bike 3 x week with an average loop on 35 miles with at least 2000 feet elevation. I'm a bit older than you ( 70 ) but is good shape.

@@tonyc.1147 I am definitely not certified to be giving training advice, but in my experience, it seems like you are off to a good training regimen. If I were you I would do a couple rides of longer than your usual 35. At least one ride of about 60-70 miles maybe 2 weeks before your Hawaii trip. Your Haleakala ride is definitely one of endurance. For me, I knew my legs and lungs would be in good shape, I was mostly concerned about my body (butt) sitting on the bike all day. I spent 10 hours in total (7 hours pedaling) up and down. Another thing that was really hard for me was the elevation near the top. I live at sea level, so I couldn't prepare for that. If I did the climb again, I would also invest in a better quality pair of bike shorts. ( I learned my lesson that day with cheap bike shorts.)
