    I'm in awe of Maestro Blomstedt, still conducting at 93, and STANDING while conducting Schubert's hour-long Symphony No. 8! Blomstedt is one of my cultural heroes, still making music at a rather advanced age; he must be doing something right! Made me chuckle at 31:19. And I love the embroidery on Maestro Blomstedt's velvet collar, in the style of a traditional Scandinavian jacket.

    This symphony "The great" and at the same time the longest of the composer, is Schubert's posthumous symphony, it was premiered 11 years after the death of the composer by the great Felix Mendelssohn to whom we also owe the rescue and the premiere of the "Matthew's Passion" of BACH. 31 years old is too short for a great genius that Beethoven referred to him as "who possesses the divine spark." Thank you NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester for this memorable concert. Great conductor, orchestra and soloist Excellent sound, BRAVO!

    One of the delights of the Elbphilharmonie is that it was designed for broadcasting - to place the television viewer in a warm, music-friendly space right alongside the audience. The viewer experiences exactly what the audience experiences because the television viewer IS a part of the audience. So I wondered what it would be like to hear a concert in an empty Great Hall. Amazingly, it’s almost exactly the same - we are in a warm, music-friendly space which happens to have our fellow concertgoers distributed worldwide. We don’t notice the emptiness because there IS an audience-us! Speaking as a sound designer, I salute the technical crew who made this illusion real - or perhaps who enabled this reality to project itself. And speaking as a member of the audience, a standing ovation for the musicians and Maestro Blomstedt for the vivid, breathtaking new explorations of these familiar compositions. Bravo to all!

    My favorite symphony. Everyone, from Berlioz to Mahler owes Schubert. Hard to believe he inhabited the same century as Bach. My guess is his greatest influences were Haydn and Beethoven, less so Mozart and Bach. Chock-full of goodies, I particularly relish 36:00

      Blomstedt was EMPHATIC that it should be considered number 8! ruclips.net/video/kiZb3wzf6Wo/видео.html His analysis is fascinating (subtitled in English), and this performance is glorious. Some wonderful examples of the way he keeps time with his shoulders while shaping the melodic line with the wrists and hands. And spine-chilling dynamics! Glad to see you here! --B

    It is admirable that Mr. Blomstedt continues to conduct at his age.
    In the case of the Mozart piano concerto, the orchestra is too big for my taste and it sounds a bit in a romantic direction. I understand that Mr. Blomstedt concept must be that and very difficult for him to change at his age. He has more than earned his convictions.
    Another thing to consider is that everything sounds like recorded in a big church. I don't know the ELB Philharmonie personally but I get the feeling that it has too favorable acoustics. In total, too much reverb for my taste.
    Anyway, thank you very much for sharing, very good concert and excellent soloist too.

    In Schubert there's some balance problems. I guess it is because of the distancing. Nevermind, terrific performance with maestro Blomstedt at the height of his powers

    Schubert Symphony NINE, not 8th as listed.

      Hi, nice to meet you! There is a ongoing discusssion about the different numbering systems. According to the current Schubert research his "Great" is renamed as "No. 8". And Herbert Blomstedt insists that it is the 8th, watch here: ruclips.net/video/kiZb3wzf6Wo/видео.html. :)

      @@NDRKlassik thank you for the information, but then what number is given to the Unfinished?

    • @NDRKlassik
      @NDRKlassik  3 года назад +1

      The 7th. At least in this numbering system (which leaves out the original 7th since it might not be put together by Schubert himself but by other people using Schubert's sketches). You will find both numbers though. Maybe we should simply go for "The Unfinished" or "The Great" to make sure which one we are talking about. :)

      @NDRKlassik  3 года назад

      Not in the numbering system Herbert Blomstedt believes in! :) You may want to listen to him here: ruclips.net/video/kiZb3wzf6Wo/видео.html This system doesn't include his 7th Symphony - which makes the 9th the 8th.

      What used to be called Symphony No.7 are well-developed sketches with most of the orchestration provided by other hands. Because there's very little orchestrated in his Schubert's hand, he No.7 has been dropped from the list.

    Maravillosa Sala. Formidable orquesta. Gran maestro director. Pero al pianista le hace falta desechar esa sobreactuación carente de toda espontaneidad, afectación que cambia el objetivo de concentración y, desde ya, poner expresión donde debe: en el piano. Le hace falta gracia, crocante, picardía, vino y hasta los efectos del antiguo rapé. Mas que ligato tiene un "confutato" o "igualato".
