Elminster needs some love! He got a lot of hype when teased, and then I didn't see anyone play it. I built a scry tribal, cantrip based deck with him recently and it slaps.

I built him but had issues with him being very grinding. Most people would groan when I played him because he was relatively powerful and took a while. Cool commander but not sure how to build him to be fast and not grindy.

@@patykaarplegos6282 My list is full of scry cantrips and effects to really get the card selection. I'm typically not relying on Elminster to scry for his own exile fodder. Add cards like Cathar's Crusade, Divine Visitation and Anointed Procession. That'll speed him up very nicely. I also got lucky and pulled an Ancient Gold Dragon from the Baldurs Gate set, so I've got backup plans.

i didnt notice slicer this year and am a bit upset i missed it. if you want a janky and funny alternative "jon-irenicus, shattered one" from Baldurs gate is currently my favourite commander to play casually, you don't often see a dimir voltron deck that gives you their commander to hit opponents with and uses janky enchantments to ensentivise you to give it away such as "cultist of the absolute" and "oni possession". but in all truth i made it for the memes and the deck name and kept playing it for the good times and chaos, that is why Jon-Tron is my favorite deck.

I LOVE my Isshin deck but my one complaint is that Isshin is a commander that can just win with 1 other synergy piece. So either you win the game playing a handful of lands, Isshin, and 1-2 high synergy cards OR you spend the game with no permanents because the table removed them, knowing you only need like 3 nonland/ramp cards to go off.

Erinis, Gloom Stalker from Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate has impressed me quite a bit, especially paired up with Street Urchin for it's background. You get a commander that can sacrifice artifacts to kill most creatures thanks to deathtouch, clearing the way for it to attack and recur lands, some of which are also artifacts, to just slowly keep chugging ahead. I've also built her with Scion of Halaster, but it's a little more typical BG lands midrange deck.
Another commander I'll shout out is Dihada, Binder of Wills from the Dominaria United precon. The - ability to reveal four and keep any legendary cards or else make treasures for it is simply a very strong engine and just using her for that is good enough.

TBF, it was part of a commander product (cards from them tend to be popular) and still is only the 11th most popular GR commander. Isshin is the 2nd in his color combination and slowly gaining up on Eddy Markov (it had 100+ decks more than him on the last month according to EDHREC so it might be the number 1 sometime next year).
It's 2 mana cheaper, gives you on extra color (3+ color commanders are massively popular) and triggers on more stuff. Only thing Wulfgar has going on against him is that he easily becomes a 10/10 chonker.

    • @MTGGoldfishCommander
      @MTGGoldfishCommander  Год назад +1

I was thinking about it a bit more and I think Liara has enough stuff going on to be her own Commander, after all Isshin only copies attack triggers, so things like Jeska's Will still work better with Liara.
I do think Isshin is stronger than her, and kinda wish he was at least 4 mana instead of the absolute minimum of 3, so it was more of a decision who to choose as a Commander.

Ghyrson Starn, Kellermorph and Dhiada, Binder of Wills take my top spots this year. And I have to say, people who are building Ghyrson as Tim Tribal are missing out on the real spice, which is UR Cavalcade ft. Flying Men and Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive. Swinging a 1/1 thopter and watching someone lose nine life is immensely satisfying.

I don't buy into believing you *need* infinites to end games. I play Aggro and Midrange and win fine without them.
But more importantly Tomer inspired me to brew an Izzet deck. Myra looks cool!

You absolutely don't need infinites to win games but I think it's a good courtesy to the table to add win conditions to your deck. It's very miserable when a Blink deck's wincon is slowly hitting you with a flying 2/2.

Zevlor seems good with the endless removal in Grixis.
Marneus is good, but it's easy for him to make your combos finite since you can't keep drawing you can't make more tokens, so you'll want bad deck recyclers and discard outlets.
The problem with Go-Shintai is that it's not Sisay, but on the plus side it's not Sisay. Anyways, I went with Sisay for my Shrines, so I have a shot at actually cheating them all out some games as a win con. TBH, my Sisay doesn't need to dig out Shrines most games, but they are a nice rugged backup plan.
I like Tomer's idea of using jank gear like the Treasure pick in Slicer, but for the love of dog play Two-Handed Axe and Inquisitor's Flail, they even stack with one another. If you get one of those one him he's a 2 shot kill, get both and he can 1 shot people. I like the Chaos element that Slicer offers, but it's easy to kill folks with it, it might not be easy to finish off the last opponent.
Urza Lord Protector is like Grand Arbiter for babies, but fortunately attracts a lot less hate. Meld is a nice upside, but the MatM is otherwise a crummy card unless I'm missing something, I guess if you mostly run artifacts/cards with abilities it does work?

I have seem some of those commanders soooo often in Brawl, that I'm done with them... I get bored just by watching the picture of the card... For example the urza and the shintai... They are so slow... And they don't even have a plan to win most of the times... I wait until they have some board presence and then I just use 1 boardwipe and they scoop.

You start the game with a pile of attractions (min 10). Whenever a card says open an attraction you put the top card from that pile on to the battlefield. At the beginning of your first main phase you roll a d6. If the result matches the lit up number on any of your attractions you trigger them ("visit"). That's it. It really isn't a difficult mechanic.
