The scenes with him and his dad make me cry every time. "That's your name. Sir William thatcher... your father heard that. " the first half is so light hearted that the second half catches you off guard with how emotional you feel.

So many people seem to miss the fact that when she asks what colour his tunic is and Roland seems to be just making it up, he's actually describing the fabric of the tent directly behind her, as he's going to have to make a tunic out of the tent material as soon as she leaves lol

This film is a retelling of "A Knight's Tale" from The Canterbuy Tales written by Geoffrey Chaucer. The Paul Bettany character is Geoffrey Chaucer,, which is why he is so eloquent in his introductions, so the tale is told from his perspective. It's a far better film than it should be, due to an outstanding cast doing what great actors do. I refused to see it in a theater because I'm not a fan of campy period pieces with modern music ... I feel it is pandering to a particular audience. I guess it's just a way to get single-minded audiences to learn about great literature, and I found it delightful to watch.

I know you are watching Game of Thrones as well at the moment so here's a fun bit of trivia that links it with A Knight's Tale.
Three years before this movie came out George R.R. Martin wrote a story called The Hedge Knight, about a knight named Duncan The Tall who finds himself in the same predicament as the characters in this film; his mentor passes and he must take his place at a tourney.
Brian Helgeland who produced and directed A Knight's Tale is now a part of the GoT spin off writing room and their next project is "A Knight of The Seven Kingdoms" which is about the story of Duncan The Tall.
Funny how things come back around 😂

As far as Adhemar cheating at the end, tipping his lance like that would have likely ended him in some deep shit. The prince could (and probably would since pretty much everyone thinks he's a douche) strip him of his lands and title under English rule. Those lands and hereditary title would go to William as the aggrieved. He'd have ended up losing a lot more than just his horse.

For more knights and stuff, check out Kingdom of Heaven (2005) starring, well, everyone, but Orlando Bloom is the main character. It's set during the Crusades, and we follow the efforts of the Christians to defend the newly conquered city of Jerusalem against their most formidable foe, Saladin, while there's also an ongoing power struggle within the Christians themselves. Somewhat based on actual historical events, like the large and sweeping plot points, but of couse the actions and events regarding individual people have been dramatized.

FUN FACT: This story is loosely based on the life of a real Knight, Sir William Marshal. Said to be the great Knight England ever had and probably it's greatest ever tournament knight. Though he lived 400 years before this period when the tournaments were basically mock battles rather than jousts and he was a poor minor noble rather than a peasant (basically what Count Adhemar thought he was, "a poor country knight, little better than a peasant"). He served five English Kings (though in his long life he met six!) and fought his final battle aged 72 (victorious, obviously) and by which time he was effectively ruling the country as protector to the infant King. His tunic and coat of arms were also green and yellow, like in the film and rather than a Prince, it was the Queen of England, Eleanor of Aquitaine, who was impressed by tales of his bravery when he was only a boy. OK, maybe more than one fun fact lol

This movie is always in my top 5. Lightning in a bottle and the cast is amazing. I saw it the first time many years ago when I got stuck staying in with the gf at the time and her friend put this on. I tried so hard not to cry when he 'follows his feet' home. I've seen this 100x since and cry every time lol. Love seeing new people watch this classic!

This was a really good depiction of the jousting circuit. It was a big blood sport circa 1150. The 4th wall breaking dance scene is funny.

Some things are impossible no matter how hard you think you can do it. Some things take time to achieve but are still possible. Acknowledging what is truly impossible and possible is the key.

The main girl in this movie. I remember during the time this movie came out, there were many actors and actresses like her that for about a 3-5 year period they seemed to be in every movie, then suddenly they seemed to disappear.

Stef remains maybe the best crier in reactions. When she questioned whether she’d cry or not at the beginning I’m sure most of us said either to ourselves or maybe even out loud “yes, you will cry”. I’m sure someone here will have mentioned that the character Geoffrey Chaucer who was played by actor Paul Bettany was actually a real person and probably the most famous British author before Shakespeare came along.

Such a great fun movie. I think it was the way it just loosely used the time and setting but didn't try to go too deep into being a real medieval movie. Think Ren Faire not Re-Enactment. It's completely relaxed, it isn't taking itself especially seriously. The story didn't really depend on the setting at all. It could very easily have a been about a boxer or a racing driver in 1999. It was the cast and the chemistry between that core group of actors that really makes it shine.
The very relatable contemporary dialogue and humour, mixed with the period costumes and sets was a completely fresh thing on screen when this movie came out. The music made it unique in its time. A period movie set in any era before the 20th century with a pop/rock soundtrack was practically unheard of.
