    *Fatal Bear Attacks are NOT RARE ! These fatal animal encounters are on the rise, and this spokesperson's characterizations of the number of bear attacks is not accurate. The number of people killed in bear attacks may be rare for the Banff Area, but not for BC, Washington State, Alaska, or Yosemite National Park. I live in Bear Country on Vancouver Island, and I would like to point out there is a wide area of bear country in both the United States and Canada where brown and black bears are mixing more and more with suburban environments, becoming garbage eating and foraging bears. Also, many black bears are no longer hibernating during the Winter. If bears don't find enough food in the autumn months to eat, then many will not sleep and will continue to wander around very hungry all Winter.*

      There are more bear attacks than are documented because people go missing in the wilderness never to be seen again. They’re never documented as a bear attack victims because either their remains are never found or what remains that are found are inconclusive.
      I live in the Smokies next to the GSMNP and there are cases of missing people here that I and others in the area believe were bear attacks, Veronica Casciato is but one, but local and park authorities never speak of them. A lot of locals believe, whether right or wrong, that authorities are more protective of the bears than they are of the people.

    Given that the bear killed 2 people and their dog and was still guarding the bodies some 5 hours later, this was almost certainly a predatory attack. EDIT: We now know they established camp by 5 pm. This bear came into camp sometime before 8 pm, and when grizzlies do that it is almost always motivated by prey drive. The dog probably tried to defend the owners at that point.EDIT: Now known to have been an old sow in poor condition with worn teeth. They were definitely in the wrong place at the worst time.

    1 or 2 huh that’s why 4 were killed in Canada by bears in 2022 & another 26 were attacked & injured . There
    lives changed forever. And countless more terrifying close call encounters . Pets will always attract wild animals . I’d never bring a dog into the Rockies . I’ve spent a lot of time there and the last thing I’m gonna do is risk my dogs life to save me . Pets should be banned from the Rockies national parks back country . Not saying that’s what instigated this attack , a pending investigation will determine that. However , pets are definitely a lure . Regardless it’s another sad and tragic loss . It's a bizarre way of viewing and valuing life when people express empathy for animals but none for human beings. Sociopathic behavior is alive and well in the comments section.
      The bear in this case was not exhibiting normal behavior. It was old, underweight, with bad teeth, most likely starving and deranged. Parks officials did not have any previous contact with this animal, which could indicate it wandered into the park from another territory. The couple seemed responsible and respectful of others and their environment.

    Dogs should not be running free in National Parks, not only because of predators but for not disturbing game as a whole. I feel sorry for these people. Since we don't know, it's best not to speculate on the circumstances of the attack. Maybe the bear was sick or injured , so he was in defence mode. Appex predators do not normally attack human unless unable to escape, provoked or with offspring.😢

    • @CastleMc
      @CastleMc 10 месяцев назад

      There is no evidence that the dog was running free, and abundant evidence that this was a predatory attack by an old sow bear (no cubs) in poor condition who entered their camp at night. The bear was still guarding the bodies 5 hours later and charged the rescuers, which is why they had to shoot it. None of this is speculation, but your denouncing them for having a dog running free IS speculation. The dog probably died trying to defend them-in camp. Parks Canada said they did everything right including hanging all of their food in a tree some distance from camp. I agree that dogs shouldn't run loose but by all accounts these people were responsible, respectful and experienced. Predatory bears are rare but real and there are many documented cases involving all species of bears.

      You can have one at your residence if you live in Banff or driving on the road. , but if you get caught in a Canadian National Park with a gun, you will wish a bear or a cougar got a hold of you. No hunting, no firearms in National Parks. No exceptions. Shooting an animal in a National park even in defence of yourself will end up with you in jail. Shooting an animal out of a park and out of season? It's called Poaching, and again illegal and you will be charged for that along with weapons violations. Usually a fine and lifetime bans from entering the Parks for Canadian citizens plus confiscation of weapons and your vehicle. You can get your vehicle back usually, but your gun? That is now evidence in the commission of a crime and will most likely be destroyed.
      Basically, the animals have more rights than people in the Parks. As it should be.

Grizzlies are dangerous critters and if you can’t pack a rifle to defend yourself then you should be going into grizzly country. The parks are not safe, and the increasing number of tourists and the increasing number of bears in the park means that bear-human interactions are also increasing. I recommend to people that if you want to go explore the mountains go out on a piece of crown land, and avoid the parks like the plague.
