The amazing thing is how Tommy's voice has held up so well over the years. Most guys his age can't sing in the same range anymore. Check out Tommy's appearance on Live From Daryl's House, Daryl and his band marvel how well Tommy's voice has held up. I just noticed from some recent Hall and Oates appearances that Daryl has had to lower the register of most Hall and Oates songs. I'd rather they have to do that than be gone. So let me get in my first Styx show - late 1979 at Riverfront Coliseum, a few days (I think) before The Who concert where several people got crushed to death trying to get in the doors - I had a similar scary experience with the same issue - obviously not with the same result, but it was frightening to be moved about 20 feet without moving your legs, totally beyond your control. Styx was touring in support of the Cornerstone album, opened the show with Eddie, the whole show was great. Dennis started the show wearing a Cincinnati Reds jersey, switched to the Cubs about halfway through the show, but I won't hold that against him. Best part was after they did Renegade. Place was rocking, Dennis sat down at the piano and said "Man, how do you follow that sh!t?" and then proceeded to play the piano intro to Come Sail Away, and the crowd exploded. April Wine opened the show; they were good and I've been a fan ever since.
Styx was the first band I saw in concert. They've been my favorite ever since and I've seen them in concert several times. They never disappoint. Love Tommy!!!
I saw STYX on the GRAND ILLUSION tour with Sammy Hagar warming up for them. The album was #1 in the country. Wow what a show! I was amazed. The crowd was the most enthusiastic I've ever seen.
The most inspired, inspirational and flat out quality music I have seen and heard in a long, long, LONG time (if not EVER) is the work that Tommy did with the youth orchestra and choir!
Styx was I think my second concert ever around 1979 at the old Cobo Hall in Detroit. We were only a few rows right in front of Tommy Shaw. He sounds as good today as he did back then.
Chuck lives in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. and I serviced his pool for awhile. Met and spoke with him many times. He's very humble and interesting. He told me some super cool stories and hooked me up with show tickets @ the Hard Rock. Showed me his gold and platinum records he's hung on the wall. Not a huge mansion you might think a rock star would live in. He just has a normal sized home but has it set up very nice. Loved working in his back yard, as it is asian themed, with a turtle pond out back and Koi fish outside in the front. Super Zen vibe when I was there. I miss our chats. So happy that's he's still able to continue rocking.
I've seen them 7 or 8 times since 1977 and they have never disappointed. I saw them again last summer in a smallish venue and they sounded as great as ever. I'm playing in a cover band and we open a set with a a Styx medley of Grand Illusion, Fooling Yourself, and Too Much Time. Its always my highlight of the night.
Honestly, they were just as good if not better than they were 30 years ago. Both bands, REO and Styx were incredible and their energy level was at 💯%. These guys laid it out like they were just breaking into the business..
I saw them live with night ranger and reo speedwagon. Reo was so loud and distorted. Night ranger is my favorite band. But styx was awesome. And blew them away.

Sorry Dudes but the founding of Styx was not only the Panozzo Brothers, but including DeYoung, and JY. They formed in Chicago in 1972 under the Wooden Nickle Label, a branch of RCA Records. Shaw did not join the band until 1975 when John Curulewski left the band after the release of the album Equinox (there 1st Album on the AM Label) and the band was about to hit the road. Shaw came as a replacement and the band clicked almost immediately. Shaw started with Styx next Album, Crystal Ball in 1976. In 1980 Styx put out Paradise Theater, their 1st and only #1 Album. That is the time Shaw had a fit with DeYoung about doing a "Concept" Album, then in 1983, After the next Concept Album came (Kilroy Was Here) and after the Tour, Shaw left, and the Band broke up. They got back together in 1995 and thought things went well until about 2000, DeYoung had medical issues with his eyes and Shaw somehow took over and went on tour without DeYoung. I saw Styx in 1983, 1997, and 2000 in Atlanta. The 2000 show when they announced that Deyoung was replaced by Gowan and when he sang the song "Lady" (Third song in), Half the venue left. I stayed but was not impressed. When they went into the Final song "Come Sail Away", I left before the concert was finished. So, in any way Shaw, get your facts straight. I still have my Styx Albums from 1972 to 1999 (The DeYoung era) but never bought any albums with Gowan on it since then, even today. Styx in the 70's thru the 90's were awesome. 2000 and on? Meh!
Actually James is not really a "founding" member . It's was Dennis, the Panazzos , guitarist Tom Nardini (who was later replaced by J.Y) remember it was 4 people and then a 2nd guitarist is added, yep John Curelewski joins. The band was called Tw4 aka TRADEWINDS 4 because originally it was 4 people. When Curelewski joined Nardini quit J.Y joins and it's permanently a 5 piece band. In 1975 Curelewski leaves (fed up with Dennis) before the Equinox tour and Tommy Shaw joins. So you have Dennis, The Pannozos , J.Y and Tommy Shaw and history is being made with a line up that was solid from 1975 to 1983.

The reason included JC being depressed, especially being away from his family/young children too much, and the fact that A&M wasn't promoting Equinox because they were too focused on other albums like Frampton Comes Alive. JC was feeling that the move to A&M was going to be a disaster. Yes, the last night JC was on stage with Styx, Dennis and he got into an argument but it was built upon a bunch of other things and everyone in the band agreed it was best to let JC go. He wasn't in the mindset to continue touring. I am a big fan of JC and his early work (more than I am a fan of Tommy Shaw) but it wasn't as cut and dry as you claim.

Here's why :Aside from JCs family issues which Deyoung had the same problem and after seeing a therapist, he started bringing his own family( including his wife "Babe" )on the road . J. C had a big problem with getting his own songs 🎵 on the records and getting them played "live". If you remember watching VH1 "Behind the music" it was James Young who said Dennis took control/direction of the band by "LADY" being a major hit (that Dennis wrote) made J.C very uncomfortable, alienated, very unhappy. Tommy Shaw in a 1993 in written interview stated he met J.C just after joining Styx and he said that J.C and Tommy himself hit it off and became friends. Tommy said J.C had a lot of hostility towards Dennis and they owed J.C thousands of dollars for "EQINOX" and they hadn't paid him what was owed to him. Yep, Tommy who in a way inherited some J.Cs problems with Dennis later due to those concept albums and ballads became J.Cs biggest defender. There's never one reason in these situations.

The money issue during Equinox was due to the buyout from Wooden Nickle, nothing to do with Dennis specifically. Tommy can't even acknowledge the role Dennis played in the founding of Styx and lied about him leaving the band during BNW. Tommy and JY are lucky that Dennis didn't go after them for violating the non-disparagement clause of their settlement agreement.

I think we can all agree, we would all like to see Dennis, Tommy and JY together again. I don't think it is going to happen for whatever reason. Lawrence is a great singer and keyboard player, however he doesn't sound anything loo like Dennis. Dennis put together a nice band with someone to take Tommy 's parts, and he sounds more like Tommy than Lawrence sounds like Dennis. Both Styx and Dennis are doing great, but keep in mind if it wasn't for the fans, there would be no Styx. So if there is a true Styx reunion, it would benefit the fans more than anyone. And I think they would appreciate if everyone put their difference aside and do a maybe a five date show with Dennis. Then they could part ways. I know it's a dream but dreams do come true.
I have loved the music of Styx for many years, but Styx died over 20 years ago. Now there are two different cover bands that perform the music of Styx. This cover band gives us mediocre versions of Dennis DeYoung songs and Dennis' version gives us mediocre version of Tommy Shaw songs. The difference is that Dennis doesn't act like Tommy doesn't exist. They both have gigantic egos and Styx will never play again.
Love the classic stuff but that keyboard player now 😆 😆 He's good but also the hack version of the guitarist that thinks each chord change isva magic trick. 😆 I forget which comic did that bit but its true.
Tommy whitewashing Dennis DeYoung out of the band is nauseating. Don't get along with the guy if you want. Don't let him back in the band, whatever... Rerecording everything for that crappy "Regeneration" release ten years ago in order to exclude DeYoung from streaming revenue was not only pathetic, but frustrating to someone who wants to easily stream a classic Styx tune without purposefully making the extra effort to find the one that DOESN'T have Gowan's vocals instead of DeYoung's. I've never met either Shaw or DeYoung... I've certainly seen interviews of DeYoung that made me understand why Shaw might not like him, he's got an oversized ego and he's quite the braggart. But, the pettiness I've seen from Shaw has really soured me on his little Styx tribute band here. The fact that they now play "Mr Roboto" just puts it over the edge. And what's with Evankovich horning in on JY's guitar position? Are they phasing James out?

They were good even then but when the songs are played noticeably at a dragging tempo after so many years of performing, it reveals these guys are definitely much older. That's as they call it in business JND , a JUST NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE.
Dennis wanna-be is hard to listen to - embarrassing. This is a cover band with Dennis. Listen to any Dennis video and the difference is massive. Time to retire these guys

I have loved the music of Styx for many years, but Styx died over 20 years ago. Now there are two different cover bands that perform the music of Styx. This cover band gives us mediocre versions of Dennis DeYoung songs and Dennis' version gives us mediocre version of Tommy Shaw songs. The difference is that Dennis doesn't act like Tommy doesn't exist. They both have gigantic egos and Styx will never play again.

Was never a fan, hated "Babe." But yes, these guys are great and Tommy Shaw is so relaxed, great chops and voice after decades....

Tommy whitewashing Dennis DeYoung out of the band is nauseating. Don't get along with the guy if you want. Don't let him back in the band, whatever... Rerecording everything for that crappy "Regeneration" release ten years ago in order to exclude DeYoung from streaming revenue was not only pathetic, but frustrating to someone who wants to easily stream a classic Styx tune without purposefully making the extra effort to find the one that DOESN'T have Gowan's vocals instead of DeYoung's. I've never met either Shaw or DeYoung... I've certainly seen interviews of DeYoung that made me understand why Shaw might not like him, he's got an oversized ego and he's quite the braggart. But, the pettiness I've seen from Shaw has really soured me on his little Styx tribute band here. The fact that they now play "Mr Roboto" just puts it over the edge.
And what's with Evankovich horning in on JY's guitar position? Are they phasing James out?

The music sounds accurate but the tempo is dragging , a big sign these guys are older.
But they still sound pretty good.
@@earlbishop5136 Didn't say that it didn't sound good, I saw Styx in 1983 in Columbia South Carolina during the Kilroy tour. They were good even then but when the songs are played noticeably at a dragging tempo after so many years of performing, it reveals these guys are definitely much older. That's as they call it in business JND , a JUST NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE.

Ive met the drummer 2 times. He is probably the best rock drummer to date and one of the nicest guys on the planet. His name is Todd Sucherman.

Todd may have been a little aloof in high school (I know; I was there) but he's a terrific guy now and donates a lot of his time teaching kids how to hit the skins.
