These talented young musicians are lucky to be a part of such a performance of a rock legend. This is bar none one of the coolest things I've seen and heard. Music history in the making.
Harold Hatton I agree with you but, the lucky is Tommy Shaw to be able to be accompanied by these wonderful young musicians in this day and time when so many of our nations schools have done away with music classes and put that money into the overly funded football programs.
Tommy Shaw is a bad ass. Those young musicians will remember that night the rest of their lives and some will go on to fame of their own. That jam will be hard to top though
It is truly hard enough to become known enough in the rock and roll scene, The real legends step down and get involved in our kids Education through music. Tommy Shaw Loved you before but even though this video was recorded long ago I am happy to have the privilege to see you doing this for our kids!
Tommy has always been a favorite musician. I came of age in the 70s when they were supremely popular. Loved him then, love him now! He's a beautiful man, inside and out. What a gift he has shared with these young people - memories for a lifetime. I hope, hope, hope he'll do another concert with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra because I'd get tickets and myself there any way I could!! ❤️🙏🤞
Many have commented about how awesome this must be for these young musicians. True. It is equally awesome for Tommy to play his music with such a great orchestra and choir behind him. A thrill of a lifetime for all!
I was waiting for Tommy to get out of his chair and make that guitar sing.... I hope those orchestral players really appreciated who they were with that day. I loved the impromptu violin solo
Just what i needed on a Monday morning in January, the orchestra is fabulous, the choir and Tommy with his depth of musical ideas, very satisfying music with breakfast, very relevant, deep meanings with an exhilirating touch, always loved Styx, but this adds a mixture of dimention, wonderful!!!!! Terri Leckner, Montreal, Canada
Sue Frasik Just think, That young talented violinist will keep Tommy and STYX going into the next generation, how awesome is that! Smart intelligent man, and all he did was give his time Bravo
I was reflecting back to when I first heard this song in the day, the angst of youth & whatnot. In stark contrast-seeing this video gives me so much Hope .... Well done !!!
70s classic rock could have been our last great musical renaissance. Praying for a new one to arrive. Please bring back rock and roll!!! Society needs this!!!!!
Rock isn't dead,it just changed with the times. I was at the biggest rock show in almost 2 years Saturday and saw the Intderruptors, Weezer, Fall Out Boy, and Greenday, and they rocked the stadium to the floor ever bit as well as people like Nugent, Aerosmith, Sammy Hagar and Deep Purple did at stadium shows I saw in the 70s and 80s. The problem is people our age closed their brains to new music in 1985 and only opens it once in a blue moon. Those playing rock today sound a little different but as Greenday who aren't spring chickens showed, the music has the same origins and we heard Bohemian Rapsody as they took the stage and they covered Kiss I wanna Rock n Roll all nite, as well as a few chords from Highway to Hell to kick off Basket Case. I refuse to be that guy who claims nothing good has been written in 30 years. It's written for the kids and if you like it it's a bonus, and if you don't they are still going to be loving it. Same tunes for the past 50 years? Not everyday at least for me.
Tommy Shaw is truly one of the last of the major Rock God's... His talent is depthless and it might be hard for those kids to get who they're jamming with...but what a privilege.
I grew up with Styx and their influence was always phenomenal and now Tommy passes along that awesome inspiration to a whole new generation like never before!! And that young ladys solo with the violin is just epic. Adds a whole new depth to this already classic hit!!!
I'm a High School Teacher, old guy, and radio dj. This is TOO wonderful. The fact you're from Cleveland (where the girl I married 32 years ago from, on a beach on Guam) only makes it better. Good onya, Deputy Dainty!
Jayna Dixon Life Of Fame indeed lmao, this entire concert was recorded and released a week or so ago, if you're interested... I was in the viola section for this show :p
As an alumni of Performing Arts HS the movie "Fame" did indeed exist. :) I was a violin student way back in the 70's in the original building/school when PA and M&A were sister schools but separate. Now, combined. But Performing Arts on west 46th was an amazing school, from which came many famous musicians, dancers and actors of the past 70 years. Several teachers were in the original movie production of Fame, including my orchestra conductor, Jonathan Strasser. I wish all kids who have a love for the performing arts could have that kind of access.
Looks like Tommy's having the time of his life performing with such talented musicians. They'll all will remember this moment for the rest of their lives.
Joy overload ! The only thing close to this I've ever seen was when Fleetwood Mac had the USC marching band come on stage with them in a live performance of "Tusk" on "The Dance" that was good, this is better He's brought so much joy and life memories to these young people who spent many long hours learning to play.
You guys are an amazing bunch of musicians! This must have been such a thrill to be able to play with one of the absolute best rockers of our time, Tommy Shaw. He is an incredible songwriter, singer and guitar player!!! Congratulations on such an incredible event!!
How is it possible that the audience is still sitting through this ??? It's unfathomable !! There would be NO WAY I could be still in my seat if I was there !!! I'm actually standing, jamming in my living room while holding my phone. My dog already knows I'm crazy (in a good way). 😉
@xrmweho I have and have always paid for healthcare. I paid for my kids, all four, healthcare as well. Where are you going with this and what's their musical talent got to do with healthcare?

@ Deputy Dainty (and your dad) AWESOME! I'm an old head as they say and went to the Paradise Theater tour concert in Pittsburgh when they were here back when I was a teenager in high school. I'm so jealous of these kids. I would've LOVED to play with Tommy Shaw while I was still in band. I would still love to play with Tommy Shaw, or rather sing since my vocals are much more practiced than any of the instruments I know how to play. That would be a dream come true!
Thank you Tommy Shaw for sharing your famous talent to those highschool students! What you did will be incredible for years to come! They nor I will never forget the priceless gift that you inspired 🤩‼️
I walked in the Greenday Hella Mega tour Saturday night wearing a Styx concert T and the people working security wanted it. Lol BTW that tour last through September, and while all the bands were pumped to get back on stage two years after the show was scheduled for their first show back was special but anyone wanting a rock show there ya go. Outstanding, incredible performance and memory for all, especially for the young orchestra and chorus, conductor, audience…and Tommy, what a trooper!❤❤❤❤ Just wish I was there😊
I'm at the age, where it's clear that I will never have children, and I've come to terms with that...but if this were my daughter, I would be so proud, I would literally melt. Great job kids...may you all find success.
Tommy Shaw is great! He doesn’t even need Styx! He was always playing second fiddle in that band for some crazy reason. I thought he was the main talent in Styx and this video proves it!! And it’s 40 years later and he hasn’t aged hardly! Has he found the fountain of youth? He looks the same! Incredible! Great Singer and player!
ruclips.net/video/uBi61pgDUP8I/видео.html am a DIEHARD Styx fan. DUDE!!! DeYoung had one of the greatest voices ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SHAW IS AWESOME!! but he CANT SING FOR SHIT COMPARED TO DENNIS!
Second fiddle? Second fiddle to who? Where do you get that from? Ever since he joined the band he literally split the lead vocal duties with Dennis and wrote like half the music if not more, not to mention his iconic harmonies on everything. He's always been the one front and center lasting live and equally the main attraction with Dennis as well as Styx itself. How do you think he's been able to tour under the Styx name with no other original member other than JY? I wish people would only write things they know about.
Ever since he joined the band he literally split the lead vocal duties with Dennis REALLY!!??Want to add up the songs that dennis sings lead and compare it to tommy's leads!! You will see many more songs have Dennis as the lead. ALL THEIR CLASSICS!! And no not mr. roboto!LADY!!
Most of Styx's best songs were Tommy on lead. And after Dennis left (was fired) and Tommy came back, he took over as the defacto leader of the band. That's been 25 years now. No one can say he has been playing second fiddle and really be taken too seriously.
BLOODY AWESOME...ALL OF IT! IT WOULD BE SO AWESOME TO HAVE TOMMY SHAW annnnnnd STEVE WALSH AS MY VOCAL COACHES...YES...BOTH! THESE KIDS ARE SO BLESSED!
This song "Renegade" helped the U.S. military capture Panamanian drug lord General Manuel Noriega! In 1989, when Manuel Noriega was being chased by US troops and took refuge in a papal nuncio, we respected the religious refuge and didn't go in. But that didn't stop us from blasting the nuncio, day and night, playing "Renegade" and other songs like "I Fought the Law and the Law Won" with the best amplifiers and most powerful speakers we could find. I'm sure nobody in the nuncio could sleep. Eventually, Manuel Noriega negotiated his surrender over the telephone with an American military officer who was his personal friend. Noriega finally came out of the nuncio in his military uniform and surrendered to us honorably. I certainly don't mean to promote war or violence here by saying that! But it did happen, and whether Tommy Shaw approved of it or not, the song "Renegade" played a part in the 1989 capture of General Manuel Noriega!
Watching those kids playing rock n roll makes me smile and gives me hope for the future 😂. The girl violinist with a dream come true moment, slayed it. 😂
Outstanding! It must have been such a thrill for those young people. And especially for the young woman who played the violin next to Shaw. Great video! Kudos to your mom for filming.
