The Ohio State Drumline does a cool little thing at the Buckeye Invitational band show! Probably one of the most glorious things I've ever seen done by a drumline... Yes, this is also on my gaming channel, but some people with restrictions cannot view it there, so I put it here for all to enjoy.

I love the entire Sing For The Day! production. Tommy kills it here, he's a consummate "professional rockstar," just a badass and a class act. Now, granted, when the original album recording of this song was made, there were no computer programs creating quantized rhythms set to a static tempo, so the intro to this song does pick up tempo slightly as the band comes in, but... Will's "YEAH!" in this particular intro was way ahead of the beat, and it totally screwed up the rhythm of rest of the orchestra coming in, poor kids. 😞 Then when the violinist joins in, sure, she's good, but here we see a couple of huge, and very common, problems with the standard "rock violin" motif. The first is that violins are lead string instruments, so violinists are treated like lead guitarists. They're not lead guitarists. And they always, ALWAYS, try to use dissonant harmonies when they play rock covers. I don't know if they think it's edgy, if it's an attempt to simulate overdrive or distortion, if they just think it sounds awesome on rock covers... In truth, it does none of those things, it just makes an otherwise talented musician sound worse than they are. Secondly, when doing rock covers, they always, ALWAYS, fall victim to the "play the most notes" philosophy, instead of the "play the best notes" philosphy. Tommy showcases his ability to do the former without forgetting the latter, but the violinist's solo is all show and no feel, detracting from the song overall. A great musician's job isn't to show you that you're not talented enough to do what they can do, a great musician's job is to make you feel the visceral and emotional impact of their performance. So, the violinist screwed up the solo portion. But to be fair, it was in the predictably crappy way that "rock violin" players always do. But god bless these kids, and most of all, Liza Grossman, the conductor. There's no doubt she's a fan, and the animation and physicality of her conducting show you the pure heart behind the production, start to finish. I've read that they didn't have a lot of time to get ready, but her enthusiasm, energy, and spirit clearly motivate these kids to give this production everything they've got. Sure, the youth orchestra's performance isn't flawless, but under the circumstances, who would expect perfection? It's just a shame that the missteps from the "professionals" make matters even harder on them and mar what's an otherwise phenomenal, rocking rendition of a Styx classic. A little critical, I know, but it's honest and true. 🤷 Overall score: 6/10 🤦 If not for those gaffes: 9/10 🤘

Tommy has always been a favorite musician. I came of age in the 70s when they were supremely popular. Loved him then, love him now! He's a beautiful man, inside and out. What a gift he has shared with these young people - memories for a lifetime. I hope, hope, hope he'll do another concert with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra because I'd get tickets and myself there any way I could!! ❤️🙏🤞
