  • The Detroit Trolley
Detroit’s Downtown Trolley was built in 1976 as a U.S. Bicentennial project. It ran over a one-mile L-shaped route from Grand Circus Park to near the Renaissance Center, via Washington Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue.
It used narrow-gauge trams, most of which ran originally in Lisbon, Portugal.
The Detroit Downtown Trolley (formerly the Detroit Citizen’s Railway) was the first urban vintage trolley project in the country, commencing operations on September 20, 1976.
The original route was about one mile in length, later extended an additional 1/2-mile. It runs from Washington Boulevard and Grand Circus via Cobo Hall to a point near the Renaissance Center.
A small carbarn housed the fleet of nine narrow gauge cars.
Equipment: nine single-truck cars, 7 of which are from Lisbon, Portugal. There was also an English double-decker and a Swiss car.
The cars are European 900 mm gauge (2’11-7/16″).
The system ran from 1976 to 2003.

Wow I remember this trolley down Washington boulevard and Jefferson. So much redevelopment and new construction has/is happening downtown since this video, today there would be great demand for ridership

Hey Barry, did you film any Los Angeles Metro Rail videos back in the 1990's or early 2000's? I would like to see footage of LA Metro light rail (Blue, Green, and Gold lines) back in the 1990's and early 2000's. I especially would like to see the Green Line's grand opening in 1995, along with the Gold Line's grand opening in 2003. I also would like to see LA Metro subway action with the Red Line, back in the 1990's and the early 2000's. I would like to see especially the grand opening of the Red Line's North Hollywood extension in the year 2000.
