  • I found a ton of old 16mm film reels at a yard sale. I had them converted to digital. I was amazed at some of the historically significant things on the reels. I will be sharing some of them on my youtube channel. Please subscribe for more.

    I remember that day all to well. Walking home from school in knee high snow, blowing snow and strong winds made it even harder to get home.

    That was great. My old stomping grounds. Recognized almost every building, street and house in old Walkerville - Even the gentleman with the pipe walking past the old Royal Bank. He lived on the 800 block of Argyle. Pretty sure he was an executive at Hiram Walkers.

    I live in Windsor now. Moved here in 1979. In 1978 we still lived 3 miles outside of Petrolia close to Sarnia. I would have been 8 years old and still remember all the snow and no power. Guys with snowmobiles were going around taking people into town to get the basics. One of them took my dad in and back bless his soul. The snow had drifted up to the roof on the side of the garage and my dad had to climb out the bathroom window so he could shovel out the doors to the house. Crazy.

    I remember it well, we lived in a small cul-de-sac on Greendale in Riverside. Once everyone came home from work we organized a Pot Luck, the kids all played outside, building forts, having snowball fights. Great memories, great neighbours.

    I was living out in Essex County that year and remember 3 days of blustery conditions along with the snow. Those 2 years (1977 and 1978) were brutal years for winter weather. I don't recall the fiddle music. 😛

    I was living in Kingsville and attending St. Clair College at the time. I was car pooling with friends, and we tried to get to school that morning. We made it about two or three miles north of town and came across several cars scattered across the road, completely stuck. We hunkered down in a nearby house to wait it out. We waited, along with many other folks that had got stuck, until the storm blew past. It was mid-afternoon, I think, before the winds calmed down, the sun came out, and we were all able to get back on the road. Thanks for sharing this footage.

    😍You discovered a Treasure, Michael.
    I remember that snowy blizzard well.
    @ 1:11 I'm almost 100% sure that is Dr. Cyr's home with the man (maybe his son?) shoveling their driveway. It's across the street from St. Mary's church in Walkerville. Which is across the street on the other side from Willistead Park. I went to King Edward elementary a few streets away with Brenda Cyr. So I've been to that home we see several times! Our family home of 56 years was/is a few blocks down. I know that area very well and miss it.
    We Canadians always make it through.
    Thanks for your work and contributions on preserving my Native City of Windsor's rich history. 👍❤🇨🇦

    That sure looks like Bob Monks shovelling out his car at the beginning of the film... he has the same mannerisms. Not sure if he lived in that area though. Scotty I was only 13 yrs old and in grade school then. Are you that much older than me? I won't forget our snow storm ride from Cranbrook, Michigan! Funny that you mention Bob Monks b/c I took a life drawing class with him at Willistead. I was the only 10 year old in the class & didn't know there would be nudes. I guess my Dad didn't ask. Monks told me to draw the other artists drawing the nudes instead. I wish I had those drawings to see how I was managing drawing real humans instead of imagining them. Monks did a wonderful real life sketch of me as a pièce de résistance to finish off the class that I kept for decades. I have no idea where it hides now, which is too bad.

    I remember this well. My parents had just left on a vacation to San Diego (we had family there) and I had to pick them up in Detroit in this mess. Mind you I was only 17 so it was a nail biter for me ... my father drove back from Detroit and made a shocking announcement ... "We are moving to San Diego, I got a job offer and if you want to stay here.. you can stay with your brother".... Needless to say, I've been in California now since March of 79. Never looked back... my brother, never came.

    Hey Michael. This is a long shot, but you know a lot about Windsor and seem to be good at Windsor research. Was there a Zellers inside the Dougall Square center (3893 Dougall Ave, now the Superstore I believe)? Basically it started out as the whole building as a "Supercenter". . . maybe 1987. Then Supercenter left and the store was split in two. My recollection is that the left side became Zehrs, and the right side became Zellers, which had a little hair salon in the back right corner. It was in the place that Winners is now. It didn't look like a Zellers from the outside, and was only there from maybe 1990-1995, and took up much more space than the Winners that replaced it.

    • @MikeEvansWindsor
      @MikeEvansWindsor  3 года назад +2

      Yes you are 100 percent correct, there was a Zellers there at that time.
      My wife says the Barber shop was a Magic Cuts!

    • @DarthHater100
      @DarthHater100 3 года назад

      @@MikeEvansWindsor Awesome, thanks!
      It's just that I dont think I'd be mistaking the East or West end Zellers as the one with the barbershop, bc those were a bit older and had distinct looks to them.
      It's the barber shop that makes me so sure, bc Devonshire Zellers has an exit to parking on the wall where the barber shop would be at the Dougall location (assuming the 'front' is the end with the mall-facing entrance).
      I've talked to several family and friends and no one remembers there being a Zellers there, but most seem to agree there was something that took up the much larger space than Winners occupied. I think it's probably just that the other three Windsor Zellers had that boxy look, and lasted well into the 2000s, whereas this one has been gone for ~25 years.

    • @Kennymac8251

      Woodalls golf was where the Superstore is now. Superstore was a Zehrs. Across the way was a Sentry store not a Zellers. Zellers did not come till later and was never in that location
