Thank you for the hibiscus tour❤ I'm a beginner gardener and was looking for the candy crush but fell in love with the Holy Grail. After I came home with that beauty my man had to pick me up a cherry Choco Latte. I was so happy with them but the cherry's foliage has some beautiful dark pink in with the dark leaves. Can't wait to see next year's new ones once again thank you!
Ooohhh! These beauties are the reason I got into flowers! I have many of these and keep buying the new ones. I got lilac crush this year. I need that cookies and cream for 2024 for sure! Anybody who's interested in growing these, do it! You almost can't kill them. They like water and people will constantly stop by and take pictures or ask you about them.
I have 10 different hardy hibiscus in my yard. Always on the look out for more. They are truly a show stopper in my opinion. Also tons of rose of Sharon. Beautiful in any garden.
I grow those along with french mallow, tree mallows, lavatera trimensis, and tropical hibiscus ! Love this family members of roselle/mallow hibiscus plants 🌺
me to but cafind it anywhere in store/ nursery near me. I've been on the hunt for 2 years. I ordered a 3 gallon one online and it's tiny and pitiful looking so far
I am in Zone 9a and adding a hardy Hibiscus to a new bed either this fall or early spring. Thanks so much for this tour with all the details. Here in Houston, we have had about 45 straight days over 100 and no rain. So I am hoping for better gardening weather soon. Thanks again
Hibiscus flowers are so stunning. Love the varieties. The ruffles are so unique!!!!! ❤❤❤. You must love coming into work at such beautiful place ❤. I can imagine how beautiful your garden must be flowers 🌻🌹🌺🌸🌼 . Have you ever shown yours?
I have 3 candy crush hibiscus in my yard from your garden center Heidi that are absolutely stunning!! 🥰🌺 The starry starry night hibiscus looks like it could be the parent of edge of night, and when in full bloom looks absolutely magnificent. The height and flower detail sre so striking. I'm so glad it's still available. Thanks for putting these hibiscus tour videos together every year...its dreamy to see them side by side when I don't have hsve room in my yard to plant all the varieties. ☺️
Thank you so much Heidi for that excellent overview! I want to add another hardy hibiscus to my garden and was looking for a way to compare cultivars. You piqued my interest in several, so I’ve got some thinking to do! Again, thank you so much!
Oh my goodness, these all are so beautiful. It would be hard for me to pick just one. I would have to go with one of the small ones. But definitely a bright pink one. Oh WOW, wish i could get candy crush. But its pretty big., but soooooooo beautiful. ❤ Thank you for sharing this with us Heidi 😊😊
I have had great luck with Evening Rose, cherry Choco-latte, and Berry Awesome, but my Ballet Slippers does not perform in my northern Michigan zone 5/6 garden. Planted on 2019, I was hoping it would be “leaping” by now. It’s interesting to see how plants grow (or not!)!!
@@gardencrossings last year I knew one was not getting enough sun, but all 3 (different locations) were just unhappy. I moved them where other successful hibiscus are located (planted with Biotone) but now in year 4 they are still only about 1 foot wide, perhaps 3 feet tall. They look sparse but I’m not giving up, YET!
The newest one, Cookies & Cream looks gorgeous!!! I really like the dark foliage with the clear white blooms. Curious though as to why the one bloom has a pink tinge around it??? Will they all develop the pink ring? Or was this just an abnormality??
I was going to comment on that too. I bet it was hard to come up with a no-pink flower in this cookies and cream variety. And that you occasionally get a flower with a tinge of pink.
I did notice that as well. I think it will be an uncommon occurrence. I have even seen that the buds have a pink tinge but once they open they are clear/white
Love all the comparisons, great video! Still hard to pick a favorite, they are All gorgeous! Question,,, do they like to be fertilized? And watered often?
Beautiful!! Which are the Most Compact Varieties With the Largest Pink/Whte Flowers. I believe the Summerific Series has buds from Top to Bottom of the plant? thank you - Love these plants and all your info! thank you
Hi Heidy, love all the new varietes for 2024 : water melon ruffles, summer carnival and cookies cream. I have been waiting for edge of night to be available in france.
@@gardencrossings thanks for your response although I've read many who said that snapping those spent buds will help the plant to continue producing more buds
i'm still waiting for mine to bloom. Planted them 3 years ago. Last year I lost one and the rest didn't do much. Lost another one this year but the ones have buds although they are on the small one. I believe they are Spinderella, Evening Rose and Cherry Choco latta. I just added a French Vanilla and replaced one Spinderella that died. I like that Cookies and Cream!
@@gardencrossings Yes to both questions. They are in full sun. But we have sandy soil. It maybe a water issue. They are doing better this year because we had so much rain. Deer are a menace to my hydrangeas but they haven't touched the hibiscus...yet.
U have to tie down the base of the stalk at the bottom of the plants to plant stakes on either side. Cuz if not. The wind gonna rock the plants and loosen the roots and the plant dies. Worse if it's a hybrid hibiscus. Will die quickly.
Do you have any of the Head of Heels Dream or Luna White? I have red house with white trim and bought French Vanilla but then came across Luna White and decided I wanted more white and not creamy white. Bought that and then I discovered Head Over Heels Dream but haven’t found one in person to assure I like that one better! There’s also a bright pink one with dark leaves I’ve been stalking at someone’s house and can’t figure out what variety! The petals do not appear to overlap like most hardy hibiscus.
Hello, Heidi 👋🏼. I have 7 Edge of Night as a hedge. This will be their second year and they got huge last year. This year, up here south of Boston, some tiny, green caterpillars 🐛 has found them and have turned the leaves into lace! 😭😭😭 I’ve sprayed with Neem Oil but, question 🙋🏼♀️ Will I have this issue every year? Such a bummer! I was literally squishing them😖
Sad to say but the answer probably is yes. I know in the gardens at Walters this is one plant that gets sprayed to ward off pests. Spraying is frowned upon but selectively sometimes it has to be done. This is not a huge pollinator plant
Hibiscus do like water. Do they take a lot, not really a lot, but i would recommend at least 3 times a week watering them well. Fertilize once in the spring.
Yes indeed & I never would have ever known the name of this specimen if I didn't accidentally propagate this in water. My grand parents had these in the late 80s. I thought how ugly of a flower. Now in my mid 40s they are okay. I only grow them bc they are extremely simple to propagate. I got the white ones, sky blue & beautiful off yellow all around my backyard. I wish roses were equal simple
@@gardencrossings There were a few blue-ish perennial hibiscus that came out about 10 years ago and I believe they were bred in Texas (Cordon Bleu, Bleu Brulee). Unfortunately, the flowers did not open widely and whatever the breeding background, they did not prove winter hardy here in Zone 4b. It was exciting when they were released but ultimately disappointing especially given how impressive recent selections are in the standard colour range. They made a big brief splash in the market and quickly disappeared.
Are those one plant each? They are really full! I’ve stayed away from hibiscus because of the short bloom time but these look so pretty I just might try.
I am getting some more… do you know how long they take to grow into that six foot wide size? Mine only got maybe 4ft tall and 3ft wide this year. I have them in part shade …. almost everything enjoys relief from the heat here in humid Arkansas, are these what would be termed a “hell strip” plant? 😂 if so I’ve got a great spot I can move them to this fall
Yours may be a bit smaller due to being grown in part shade. They do need a good amount of water so if you are referring to a hot, dry strip, i would say no.
Hi Heidi, perhaps you could suggest to proven winners that it would be helpful the have a guide that lists the height and bloom time the the different hibiscus. Knowing with are early bloomers would be helpful and is not usually listed on the tag.
I just got a response and they do not have a list of the bloom times. They did mention that Berry Awesome, Angel Eyes and Airbrush Effect tend to be earlier than others.
Love that Watermellon Ruffles. Never seen anything like that before.
I love it as well. I like the extra ruffled over lapped petals.
It’s gorgeous!

In West Texas ours started blooming in late May. They rebloom in late August.
Really?!? I did not realize they rebloom. We do not have a long enough season here in MI I guess. Do you trim them a bit to get the rebloom?

Beautiful! I just purchased cookies and cream. I planted them side by side with no space. Should I space them?
That is a personal preference. If you want them to be independent I would leave about 4' - 5' between each
Stunning ! Which one has the longest blooming season ?
They really bloom about the same about of time. Some start sooner than others or later than others to help extend the bloom season.

Is it possible to create a orange winter hardy hibiscus? Maybe you can cross the Vanilla with a Red or pink one.
To my knowledge there is not an orange or yellow shade hardy hibiscus yet.
@@gardencrossings okay, Thank you!
Can I grow the compact ones in container?
It will depend on your zone. I would recommend being in a zone 6 or higher and a large pot. They have large root systems.
And how old are they? My hibiscus are not so fuller like yours
These are various ages. I am guessing anywhere from 2-4 years old.
How we get these plants

Possibly not enough water.
Some of these look like ‘Hollywood Hibiscus’ - are those renamed/sold as Summerific?
Nope. The Hollywood series are tropical these are Rose Mallow.
