  • Thanks for growing with us!
In this video we are taking you on a full tour of our entire garden in late August. The weather has been hot and a bit damp this summer so there are plants looking incredible and some that have seen better days. For such a long video it would have been very difficult to label every plant so instead we have broken the video up in to chapters. This way if you have a question about a particular plant you can reference what spot it was in.
Our garden features many Proven Winners plants, as well as David Austin roses, and some plants grown from seed.

I have never seen a more beautiful hydrangea than the strawberry vanilla. I have never seen one at my nursery. The backyard is breathtaking! The green landscaping behind your white fence on the east border is stunning!!!! Also behind the fire pit area!!! I would love to see all that green behind my home . All the visuals with none of the work!!! This is a labor of love for sure. Absolutely magical little sanctuary.

You'll want to use a thinner stake for that spruce....trees don't like monumental stakes, they will adjust their normal growth patterns and it will stress. Use a round tall bamboo 1 to 1-1/2" at most, it will last for as long as the tree will need it, then you can just remove it or saw it off, and the root will not get damaged. With the metal stake the roots will grow around it and you will cause damage once you remove it. The larger diameter the trunk gets, the more sturdier the tree will become, however, if it's a wheeping type, the tip may try to revert down if the tree has competition from other trees and shrubs around it, or if it's a fastigiate type, it will grow straight up once it's a little larger and stronger. Keep the bamboo support on it for at least 2-3 years. Trap the Groundhog and relocate it, or dispatch it, most States have no limitation on Groundhogs. If you don't remove it it will continue to do damage in your garden...it's a buffet station for it. Since you border a wildlife area you will have recurring issues...fence or solar electric fence are an option....2-string is all you need for deer, raccoon, and groundhog. 1 string at 8" and another at 35" for deer. Bait it with peanut butter at the beginning(on aluminum foil wrapped around the string), once they get zapped they will never come back, they learn quickly to respect the wire and deer won't even jump over it even though they easily could, but you need to make sure you do the baiting process. I've had it in my garden for 5 years, no problem, and we see deer all the time, and no more groundhogs or raccoons either. The nice thing about this method, the 2-wire system looks less intrusive around a beautiful garden..we are on 2 acres.

    • @growformegardening
      @growformegardening  8 месяцев назад

Wow thank you! I will definitely look into a smaller stake. The one we are using currently is pretty thick and ugly. We haven't seen that groundhog in awhile...we are actually considering taking out the elderberry anyways...it really hasn't done that well regardless of being mauled by the critters!!

The garden is magical. There is so much variety mixed into the spaces and repeating some of the plants like the lambs ear keep things connected. I like the idea of saving seeds to replant. I’m not sure how to go about it but it would be a practical solution for saving money to put toward a tree instead. Deer are just starting to appear in our area and we are seeing more rabbits and I am hoping they don’t affect my garden. They’re beautiful animals but from a distance only.

I’m sure someone already answered your question about the Clematis, but they like something covering their “feet” and they do take a while to get going. Have you ever heard “The first year it sleeps, the second year it creeps, and the third year it leaps!” Well, that’s a Clematis. Also, a “grouping” of Birch trees is several trees. One with several stems is called a multi-stem. 😉😙

You forgot the foxtail fern, last one. :) I only say that because it reminds me of my mom who has them in the front of her house and I miss her dearly, she lives across the country from me now. It's on my list of plants to buy this year.

I wish we could grow them in the ground. Such a great texture. It’s so nice that it is special for you

Thank you for that amazing tour, so much beauty ! I also love the formality of the patio space with the pavers and gravel pathways. It’s all so beautiful! 🇨🇦

Thank you! The pavers in the pea gravel is one of my favorite parts of the whole space. They give a little of traditional mixed with modern.

If you’re considering a dog I highly recommend a pair of female Miniature Schnauzers. One, they’re so cute, two, they’re fierce hunters, three, I’ve found they don’t mess up the plants. Two females because they keep each other company and you’re spared the heat or dominance drama.

I love your garden! I need to watch this video twice to write down some names of my favorite of your choices. I love love the bright green Fire bush? That doesn't sound right. I started a bunch of the cat mint and am using it in a lot of borders just like you guys did. I like that it keeps weeds out from where a concrete sidewalk is in some areas of my garden.

The bright green is a Winecraft Gold Smokebush! The catmint is such great ground cover. It just keeps going and going!

Sensational, well done Gentleman! You two have that artistic touch for garden design.
Just came across your site. I'm in 6b/7, Ontario, Canada.
I have a suggestion for your Prunus cistena(purple sand cherry) replacement. Over the years, I've had to take out and replace mine sadly. The Japanese beetles ravage them every year come June and they just look horrid the rest of the growing season. I replaced them with Physocarpus(dwarf Ninebark)varieties from Proven Winners, 'Tiny Wine' and Bloomin' Easy, 'Panther'. The beetles, rabbits and the deer don't bother them at all.
Thank you for such beautiful inspiration❣

Those are wonderful suggestions. We ended up reworking the area a little bit (in a later video) so we won't be needing to add anything, but that would have been perfect
