I climbed the cables twice , once when I was 18 and the other when I was 20. No lottery needed, just went to the Ranger station in the valley and got my permit which no one ever checked. both times I spent the night at the top. That was incredible. Today I am 56 and out of shape.. This video terrifies me and what was I thinking back in the day. thank you for the video...
Wow! A night on the top? I am sure that must have been a breathtaking experience to witness sunrise! It is certainly dangerous..although when we are young we think anything is possible! You are very welcome and thank you for sharing your experience Armineh!
weirdshibainu make sure your not just in good shape but terrific shape. Spend time in local gym and build great arm strength - do a lot of cardio. Loose as much weight as safely possible. I’m close to your age and I admit have extra pounds and arm strength isn’t what it was when lighter & stronger.
I love watching the cable walk up to half-dome. I love watching it because I could never do it. It is a big achievement and you should be proud of yourselves.
I hiked to the top with my bride for my 65th birthday this October. I think the dome was raised higher and the trail was made longer than when I did it in my 40's! Congratulations on making it to the top!!
Great video of this epic hike! We just completed it and I can say this video is really well done! It’s not easy to do the hike and also capture the feeling of being there! This video does that!
Wow good going Keith! One has to hike this hike to know *that * feel! Im glad you safely completed the hike ! We are going back in a week to climb the dome again too:)
My heart was racing watching you do those cables. I dream of doing this hike but I don’t think I’ll ever be fit enough OR brave enough lol my legs were shaking just watching this!
Start out with smaller hikes and little by little increase the intensity and exposure. Experience builds confidence and strength, you'd be surprised what you can be scared of one day and then before you know it you feel comfortable with it. Practice practice practice.
Train yourself to be physically fit, work on your grip strength AND endurance, and most of all, wear a harness with carabiners so you're always attached to the cables. There's a nasty, judgemental subculture that looks down on carabiners but who gives af, that's the way I plan on doing Half Dome :)
Done this 3 times. It never gets old. I recommend spending the night in the Little Yosemite Valley. It's obviously quicker and less strenuous. Just beware of incoming thunderstorms. I was caught on top once and had to wait it out. Legit one of the scariest moments of my life. Heavy rain and hail. The static electricity in the air literally made hair stand up. You are exposed and there is no shelter. All in all it's not very hard and is a must do for any adventurous type.
Chitra because I'm so in love with Yosemite, every time I see a well done video of it, it makes me tear up. Congratulations, you have a serious future in videography, awesome job. I need a tissue....
Whip Splash -Thank you so much for your kind words! Just like you I am in awe and in love with Yosemite..no matter how many times I go it feels like home, my comfort zone with alot of memories made with family friends:)
It would be impossible for me to do this because of serious problems with heights and now leg problems but this is a beautiful film for a great hike. Merci.
Very well done video. Good detail on route and I like the perspectives captured at the dome. Me and my son hope to get back to Yosemite soon to do this hike. I myself am a little leery about the dome climb due to my fear of heights, but my love of adventure can sometimes overcome that. We'll see.
Great great video one of the best super music i have hiked all over the. U. S. Nothing like hiking its about nature and mind body and soul ! I look forward to your videos stay healthy and stay safe take care everyone.
Mr big Mr bigger - Thank you so much: ) Yosemite certainly rejuvenates the body mind and soul. There is something very calming about this wonderful place!!
Woohoo! Good luck on the hike! Oct may be chilly if you start early..I did my 4th Half Dome hike Oct 2019, we started at midnight and it was freezing near the subdome! Couldnt feel my hands and feet..so wear layers ! :) It wont be as hot so you may not need to drink so much water!! We won the lottery for 2020 June 21st..but lets see how things are coz of the Covid -19!
@@champaben nice! I cant really wait for that month..hopeful soon by that time. There's no more pandemic/ covid- 19. So we could enjoy the nature trip. Well good luck on your hike's by next month. Next stop! Lassen peak🤔😥lol
Which entrance is that one?? I've been once to Yosemite so far and entered through the Wawona side. This one is awesome, through that tunnel or something like that.
tchsublime -Good luck! Take a point and shoot or your phone to capture your journey! Waterfalls will be very less or dry but the entire journey will be worth till the top!! Do update us!
NO!!! :-( didn't win the permit lottery lol and when I finally did win, they gave me the day I was heading out. So I climbed El Capitan instead.......hahahhahaha Still a WIN in my book though:-) Will for sure go back to hit the cables!!!! will reserve permit way in advance though. Thanks for thinking of me though.
I would say if you arent afraid of heights its ok..the beginning is ok..midway you start feeling the angle of the climb..also you wait every 10 feet on a plank until the next person goes up..if you wait in between you need alot of upper arm strength to hold up..as you start going towards the top there is a sharp increase in the angle and you really feel your upper arms/pectorals pull! not to mention your fingers at a 45 degree angle.. all in all a do able hike..but make sure you have a good upper body too!
Andy Bauer -We were 7 in total and since I didn't know the endurance of each person we took the safer route from JMT , instead of Mist Trail up...started at 3.45am from Happy Isle Loop..went at our pace..took photos..it was dark..by around 5.45am we reached the point of sunrise from John Muir Trail!
Andy Bauer - Also you may reach faster via Mist Trail now less water and mist..once you reach Nevada Falls go over the bridge and a little towards JMT to take the sunrise..if you go via JMT only its a gradual climb but you will capture the sunrise.I went again 2 weeks ago took the mist trail and reached Nevada Falls atleast 1 hr quicker!
Thanks! I was thinking of going JMT on the way up just because of the darkness (I want to be on the trail by 4 AM) and also to get that sunrise shot of Liberty Cap. But the Mist Trail is so cool, I might do it going up anyway and then take a detour over the bridge when the sun comes up.
Andy Bauer - Yes if you start at 4am (near shuttle stop 16 following by main marker sign) and go up Mist trail you should be able to reach the top of Nevada by atleast 6am then make you way across the bridge to JMT..but the shot we took was a lil ahead before the wall at Clark Point (with dripping water) on the right..might take you 15-20min to reach..my advise..if you have good knees just go up JMT stay at the rock (for sunrise) and after the entire hike come down Mist trail and see the falls..if you have poles and are careful its ok..since going up itll be dark near the falls!
Thanks for the tip! I've been up the Mist Trail a couple times before, but in the dark it might be a bit sketchy. Sounds like JMT is the way to go in the dark. Can't wait!
Anybody could help me? I would to go to Yosemite again. I had no hinked this trail. Where can I book my hotel near to this trail? I would like to see the stars at night and shooting stars too. What is the best place for hosting there? No expensive place please, if possible.
Hi there! So the best time to hike this dome would be from May- Oct( when the permits are on/cables are put up) ..The closest place to live would be Curry Village itself in one of those white tents or cabins very close to the trail head start..its a wonderful hike..from Oct mid to April this trail is closed because of snow..although some rockclimbers may still hike..if you need specific infornation do contact me!
No no Wheelchair ramp at all..infact hike isnt meant for anyone who may have weakness, debility, lung probs, heart problems..the angle on the dome is 45-50 degrees..impossible for a wheelchair:)
Francios Pienaar -Yes you do need a permit, the pre-season is already over, so you may want to apply for a Daily Lottery system.Apply 2 days prior to hike.Go to Recreation.gov and read Daily Lottery section. They give out 50 daily permits..if you score, you can hike! Stood to close to the water going down the falls. One slip and you would’ve gone down
👍🏼👍🏼❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yosemite is adding a brand new hike calling it, “The Full Dome!” It’s double the height & length of half done.
Just kidding, fantastic video
