This is the first review on this Springfield that was actually educational/helpful (and I’ve watched quite a few). As a 2011 enthusiast, it appeared to me that every other reviewer of this gun had no clue what they were talking about, and were clearly not familiar at all with the “2011” platform. Thank you for this video! 👍🏻
GUNS & TACTICS did great review. He did a full in depth review as well as some shorts where he broke the weapon down and went over the internals. (Edit for spelling)
Agree, I used to enjoy him but he’s so obviously in bed with all the manufacturer’s that send him guns for a positive review, I can’t remember the last time he has a bad review
Phenomenal review. A lot of people have been hating on it, saying it’s nowhere near a Staccato. I don’t think it’s trying to be. It does a very good job of being itself: a quality, entry level “2011” that has some minor issues but is pretty damn good overall.
Agreed. Those guys are also going to be the guys saying a Staccato isn't an Infinity Race Gun (which it isn't trying to be). I have a Staccato C2 and I can't wait to get my hands on one of these!!!!
Sold a TRP full rail operator over a year ago due to limited capacity and I didn’t shoot .45 often. Loved that gun for the money. It appears now that we have a 9mm 17/20 rd version I am most likely getting my second Springfield. Enjoy your content man.
Hey David, been following the channel for almost 4 years. Just wanted to mention that I've enjoyed seeing the quality of your videos and your presentation in particular go up, especially in these past few months. This video is the best one yet. The attention you've always given to little details (like the slide hanging up on the disconnector in this review) are what made me a subscriber, but the increased confidence in your delivery really help sell what you're trying to convey. Not many folks in the RUclips space have both the experience of being in the upper echelon of IPSC / USPSA and the willingness to put in the effort to share the insights that experience provides. Keep up the good work and all the best
I have a 4.25 prodigy and shot about 500-600 rounds with no malfunction. A lot of the reviews I've seen include using hand loads which cause malfunctions then blame the gun for using bad ammo. Appreciate the good review and info.
I'm watching a reviewer with 100,000 plus subscribers that deserves a million plus subscribers. Again you do an outstanding job with a little humor mixed in, okay, a lot on humor thrown in.
This earned my like and my sub just for calling out Colion''s next level cringe LOL. I love my Springfield Operator 1911, think it's great value for a production 1911, so I'm excited to try the Prodigy DS either in the commander or full size. The commander size definitely interests me though I know you start to introduce reliability issues when you get away from the government size and God's Own Caliber .45 auto lol.
I just bought mine very recently and after about 500 rounds, most of the points that are brought up do not exist. At least with my weapon. Love this pistol !!!! Great video and love your channel !!!!! Thank you !! 🙂
Thanks for spending the time on this EXCELLENT review. One of the most pertinent yet overlooked questions I had was in regards to holster fit. You solved that riddle right up front. I’ll probably wait until more optics plate footprints are offered, but man…I think I need one! I cut my teeth on issued 1911s in the USMC, then put a LOT of rounds through our MEU SOC pistols. High capacity strikers took over and rightfully so for CCW. This gets best of both worlds in a reachable price range.
I currently own one Springfield, a Garrison 1911 chambered in 9mm. Sure it’s full of MIM, but it’s tight, smooth, reliable and beautifully finished. It hits well above its price point. I ordered the 4” Prodigy. I accept that it may need resprung and an extractor tune. What exited me most is this: if magazines do become available for $39 (there are retailers showing them at that price, but listed as out of stock), I can have EGW sear, hammer and disconnector ‘smithed in, buy 10 magazines for it, and just barely be at C2 money. I already have an EGW sear spring on the way for mine. Anxious to see how this journey unfolds.
This man is ridiculously nasty at competitive shooting. I’ve been waiting for a real honest review from someone who doesn’t hold back and isn’t on Springfields payroll. Please make a Staccato vs Bul Armory vs Springfield comparison video. You the man David! Thank you for the video and I hope you’re not 45 minutes late ⏰.
Dope review. I have the 5” and have had no issues yet. I have 500 rounds through it. The slide does seem to cycle slower but it hasn’t caused any issues so far. I’m really interested in getting the 4.25”. I run a staccato C2 and I’m not a big 2011 dude, but I’m really liking the prodigy. Hopefully it continues to perform reliably.
The slow motion shot of you shooting the 124 was impressive. It’s not just the gun, you’ve got a great grip and you’re a true professional. Tip your hat and take a bow Marksman. That was a great show. Always love seeing and hearing your content. It’s a blast to get gun reviews with a sense of humor from a real shooter that knows what he’s talking about. 👍🏻👍🏻

I have to say, I really like your review. This video is high quality.
ok so ill give my personal experience on this gun. I have the same model / length. I got it from the store. It failed to feed. I got it back from Springfield a week later and took it to the range. It had zero failure to feed issues. One mag in my rear sight fell off.... I tightened it and then the rear optic plate came loose.... but after THAT I had 300 rounds no issues what so ever. I am really loving how it shoots now. I really like it overall. I understand a break in period so I'm not freaking out. I have owned a staccato P DPO and a C2 DPO and personally I like the grip and slide release alot on this gun. You wont be dissapointed... even if you have to send it in..... I wasnt trippin...they have a LIFETIME warranty and the customer service was great. I'd give it a positive review even after my problems I had. For everyone trying to modify them before sending them in, I would just say take advantage of the lifetime warranty and let them handle it. Mine shoots flawless now. Very happy overall...

At least you mentioned the MIM parts, $1500 fit and finish and didn’t claim it’s equivalent to a Staccato for less money. From a lot of what I’ve seen it’s a coin flip to what sort of reliability you’re gonna get. As you definitely know it’s not a platform you can just throw a bunch of freshly machined or MiMd parts together and expect consistent reliable function on every gun that’s assembled.
Except that Springfield has a lot of experience with building 1911's. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. We're not talking about some manufacturer that decided to make their first 1911 style pistol.
Colion absolutely grosses me out with those references. It’s like dude, that’s not how you talk about women. Guys, teach your sons to respect and have positive views of women. It will lead them to more successful and healthy relationships with their partners in the future. Comparing women to cars and firearms, which are commodities, is wrong on so many levels. And of course great video as always Mr. Marksman. I always appreciate your perspective
I watched that video the other day and I paused it, sat here thinking... did he actually consider cutting that out and then decide , "Nah, it's great, ship it"? Was just weird IMO. I'm sure he's heard a lot of push back, so hopefully he changes.
That was some of the best shooting at backstop weeds I've ever seen. Clearly you saw several weeds that need shooting and made the movements between the weeds in such a way as to be John Wick like. Great review, Thanks for the info
Great review. I (we) appreciate your time and finance giving us an honest opinion. Having had the opportunity to try one out at my local, I don’t hate it nor do I love it either. All do to the same imperfections you mentioned. I’d love to see a follow up when you’ve had some more rounds with this piece. Comparisons with the other options like the Staccato would be great too. Thanks again.
Awesome video, as always good input on reviewing guns, keep it up and I really enjoy the dad humor. If you were to ask me to describe this channel I would say imagine John Wich and the Hang Over merged, thats what this is.
Excellent video, as always. Smart, appropriate info for a quick first look, top notch communication. And, the humor is delivered like a seasoned boxer's punches. My woman, who doesn't care much for these gun videos said " he's not bad"... that's a GLOWING review 😆
Well done review again 👍👍 yes please do the comparison of the 3 2011’s. No one has done that I have all three and I have my option. You geT what you pay for. I was disappointed in it not having a mag well just looks unfinished. My WALTHER PDP PRO AND CANIK RIVAL HAVE ONE. Come on Springfield plus it need 3 mags. Keep the videos coming ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👏
The 4.25" seems to be the go-fast consensus, and that recoil footage makes it look as stable as a comped gun, without the extra fireworks. Besides, 4.25" will extract much of the juice from a 9, and you don't need sight radius with a dot. And if that grip really brings back that loving feeling...
@@jasonpbrownshooting I just watched several other reviews on this think I'll take a pass too many issues with feeding problems and cycling I think the problem with this gun is a the cerakote on the slide rails is going to cause issues and the burrs also.
Looking at the video and I am subscribing due to how you present and that one of my other GunTubers I follow commented on this video so I know you're good. Also I am not a competition shooter and personally never seen the point other than bragging rights. But after watching several competition videos I see it does have real world applications. Then like others have mentioned the fact that you shoot professionally and your not owned/promoted by the manufacturers of every firearm you talk about shows that reviews are unbiased and that is something I love. When a channel is arrogant and completely get the funding from manufacturers of every product they review I don't find that entertaining because it's like your opinion was bout. But you earned a first time subscriber. I want going to get it because people are bashing it hard but people were bashing M&P 2.0 10mm but it works perfectly fine for me. I just got to rent these firearms and make up my own mind. Then the firearms I really want that are too high in demand I got to take a chance on them and hope they work fine and via upgraded availability I think just about any firearm can be made to be close 100% likeable not perfect but close with upgrades and practice
Thanks as always for the honest review! For the last two years I have thought about building a "2011" this is much easier to stomach than the Bull etc in the market if I just outright purchase. Thanks again for all the great content you provide!
Hey bro great review. I am an RSO/Instructor in NC. I just got mine last week and I really like the gun. Great features and great price point. What really got me what how smooth the gun shot and how accurate it was. I like to shoot iron sights and the FO is on point even in lower light conditions. I took it a part a few times before I shot it and after I put the 200 rounds through it and it was very user friendly. I was reluctant about having to use a tool to field strip it but it took down fine and was easy to put back together. I am glad I got the 4.25... because like you.... now I think I am going to put this in the carry rotation!!!
Fantastic review. Thank you for your honesty. There’s a bunch of Prodigy reviews out but this one is the first I’ve seen that points out the flaws. Thanks.
Honestly I’m shocked how much hate I’m seeing for this , why would people hate a decent priced dbl stack 1911 , I’m definitely going to grab one and run it with irons .
It's because they have a choice between either hating on this gun, or realizing they probably paid too much for their Staccato, and the latter is too painful to acknowledge. 😉
@@bsmithhammer I think the work that went into the Staccato is higher than this one, hence the price difference. People forget STI had their issues initially, SA will engineer solutions with time.
@@JoMamasHouse Agreed. STIs had plenty of problems. Plus, Staccato is a much smaller company, not capable of producing things at the volume (and thus economies of scale) that SA is. So it would be tough for them to be cost-competitive with SA, unless they cut a lot of corners.
Great (snapshot) review. Will be interested in the play-by-play review after 1000 rds. Very interested in a Bul Armory comparison review since I’m interested in purchasing a BA pistol. Again, great job. Set design looks really slick too (;
I was waiting for you and your opinion because nothing and nobody else maters . And I don't care what other people say . I placed a preorder just know . I will get this gun in 5'' in December in my country . I already have a modified xdm elite 5.25 competing in the ipsc standard division so this gun will make for a perfect add on to my collection . Love your work !!!
David, David, David: Just another stellar review, period!! Love your thorough dive into this gun as I come to expect from you. There's never just riding the fence, it's either a good to great gun or it's don't waste your money. It's not a Staccato but for the money you're saying buy it! I will be waiting for that 3 gun comparison ( 5000 likes or not).
I wanna see people get alot of rounds through some of these before I get one. I've seen on reddit and such many people are having alot of issues but I'm hoping these get resolved. The STI Tactical 4.0 is my dream gun and this looks very similar (minus the flat top cut to the slide to my saddening but hey close enough).
Great review. I'd also say big kudos to SA for having the various models of this gun, and a variety of accessories, spare mags, etc. available on the very day that they officially announced. I can't stand it when you see a bunch of hype about a gun that no one (except for a few industry insiders) is going to get their hands on for 6-8 months, or longer. I'm more excited about this than I have been about any other new release in quite a while.
It’s because they are big enough to not need to utilize preorders to maintain liquidity for production and marketing costs. Which is why it’s exciting that a big brand is finally in the 2011 game.
Totally want to see a comparison video! I have seen other reviewers make similar comments about the trigger being a hair sloppy for a 1911. Im not a gun smith but it really sounds like a good smith could polish up the trigger and safety for about $100.
Ryan.....I installed all new barstock ignition parts as stated above. My stock trigger pull was 5.25 lbs. All I did was tune the stock sear/leaf spring and got it to 3.5 lbs. All of the stock ignition parts are coated, even the hammer, sear, etc. Getting all that crap off and polishing, along with a tuned sear spring will absolutely get the Prodigy shooting much better.
Great review. This might be a contender for us poors on a tight budget that want to dabble with the 2011 platform. I hope that this handgun stands the test of time and round count!
Imo there is an invisible line that you cross from a quality tool to a racehorse quality. Especially in cost vs performance comparison. IMO this hits that sweet spot. Will go bang when you need it but you won't shed a lot of tears if you scratch it. And it is an achievable price point for many people.
Have the 4.25 and it's been a bit of a lemon in the first 2k rounds. Sent to prodigy to re bore and polish the camber for a better feed angle (their solution) and I have the EGW ignition kit and pin kit on order. This $40 20-round mags are great and I'm hoping I can get this thing running smoothly for less than $1900. That would be a huge win.
My biggest complaint with my 5 in Prodigy is that the blowback absolutely covered my optic. I put 174 rounds through it on my first trip to my department range. I believe I was using 124 or 146 grain ammo. It was stovepiping quite a bit. I did watch some other reviews, and they chalked just needing to be broke in or the feed-ramp needing to be polished. I plan on carrying it as a duty pistol once I get more comfortable with it.
Nice video, the last 4 guns I bought from springfield all had very minor machining issues. The whole.... at that price point and all did function correctly out the box.
If I can find one on the used market for $1200 in a year I'd be happy to scoop it up. I just really don't want to give SA my money on a new one. Great overview, good sir.
Ive heard of your channel before, but this is my first time watching one. Interested in the Prodigy. I really like your attitude, and personality. Subscribed!!
David, I could feel you BDE through the screen! I appreciate the video and I am really looking forward to this. The witness hole is for states like the socialist hellhole I live in, that require a loaded chamber indicator. Sucks, but there it is. Hopefully our Dread Overlords here will let us plebs get these. I used to use a Springfield 1911 in .38 Super back in the dark ages of the 90's for USPSA until I got a wide body Para Ordnance frame built up. Great video and you are getting close to 100K!
I got one the day they hit the gun shops and shot it the next day. I agree about the loaded chamber peep hole, it blew oil all over my optic. My thumb safety has zero wiggle or play. It definitely is a nice shooter, I had a very difficult time telling the difference in how it shot compared to my Staccato P. The Staccato also has a polymer trigger shoe, they claim it was for weight reduction. I don't care for the two piece guide rod that requires a hex wrench to disassemble, I will probably buy a Staccato toolless guide rod to put in my Prodigy, from what I understand it will fit. So far I LOVE mine. My favorite gun to shoot is my Bul Armory SAS II Ultralight, however.
"Comparative Pricing" unfortunately means looking at the MSRP, then looking at the highly inflated price on gun broker due to non availability, then waiting until everyone with more money than sense buys one on gun broker and a ramp up on production by Springfield means a return to availability hitting normal, say about two to three years. Just look at the SA 35 as an example. Oh, great informative video. I enjoyed it immensely !
I think the name “Prodigy”implies loftier aspirations than a mid- level entry into this space can deliver. It sounds more appropriate for an innovative new offering from a builder like Atlas. Perhaps “Protégé” would have been a more apt moniker , allowing for some room to improve as more variants are designed. Or maybe the “Probably” ? I did like the band The Prodigy …too bad about Keith Flint though
We went to the the local shop to see the unveiling of the Prodigy. The slide on the 5in version they had was not very smooth and felt like it have some finishing issues. The smaller one felt much smoother.
picked one up last weekend, put about 150 rounds thru it the next day, and love it! albeit, my first 1911, but it is nice. Holding this and then picking up my Canik, its like a Bentley vs Jeep. Shaking it there is nothing making noise, shake the canik its like chitty chitty bang bang. I actually shot my xmacro better after shooting this. No idea why. I'd buy it again and have no buyers remorse
More competition. Thats what this gun type needs. Hopefully this will start getting some aftermarket support to magazine manufacturers so I don't have to pay $100+ for a quality mag.

Lololol absolutely nothing Colion said was disrespectful, incel.
he comes across as slimy with the comments he makes.
That was some of the best shooting at backstop weeds I've ever seen. Clearly you saw several weeds that need shooting and made the movements between the weeds in such a way as to be John Wick like. Great review, Thanks for the info
Weeds need killin bro
DOOD your shorts make every video in the range. Keep it up. Love your reviews.
Great review
I’m a happy Bul Tac 4,25 owner since a few weeks.
Greats from Belgium
Yes we need the comparison
Great review. I (we) appreciate your time and finance giving us an honest opinion. Having had the opportunity to try one out at my local, I don’t hate it nor do I love it either. All do to the same imperfections you mentioned. I’d love to see a follow up when you’ve had some more rounds with this piece. Comparisons with the other options like the Staccato would be great too. Thanks again.
Mine is a jammomatic. Amazing how all the initial reviewers all had perfect guns.
This is off the shelf man - coulda been anybody
Awesome video, as always good input on reviewing guns, keep it up and I really enjoy the dad humor. If you were to ask me to describe this channel I would say imagine John Wich and the Hang Over merged, thats what this is.
Solid combo
Excellent video, as always. Smart, appropriate info for a quick first look, top notch communication. And, the humor is delivered like a seasoned boxer's punches. My woman, who doesn't care much for these gun videos said " he's not bad"... that's a GLOWING review 😆
Thanks David. Great job.
Thanks
Well done review again 👍👍 yes please do the comparison of the 3 2011’s. No one has done that I have all three and I have my option. You geT what you pay for. I was disappointed in it not having a mag well just looks unfinished. My WALTHER PDP PRO AND CANIK RIVAL HAVE ONE. Come on Springfield plus it need 3 mags.
Keep the videos coming ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👏
I have the 4.25 version layaway... as a 25 year old 2011 virgin, I am very ecstatic
Seems to have a heavy trigger and another concern probably won't feed hollow pointd
@@jackomalley3687 he included footage of cycling Federal HSTs and actually said that it shined in that regard.
@@jasonpbrownshooting I just watched several other reviews on this think I'll take a pass too many issues with feeding problems and cycling I think the problem with this gun is a the cerakote on the slide rails is going to cause issues and the burrs also.
Picked up the Prodigy 5" and I shoots great.
Then the firearms I really want that are too high in demand I got to take a chance on them and hope they work fine and via upgraded availability I think just about any firearm can be made to be close 100% likeable not perfect but close with upgrades and practice
excellent review Sir
The 5” already has widespread reliability issues reported like 3 days after release lol. The 4.25” seems to be much better
It's because they have a choice between either hating on this gun, or realizing they probably paid too much for their Staccato, and the latter is too painful to acknowledge. 😉
@@HeinzDoofenshmirtz1 widespread meaning what statistically? Like 5 people out of 10k? 5 out of 1k?
@@bsmithhammer I think the work that went into the Staccato is higher than this one, hence the price difference. People forget STI had their issues initially, SA will engineer solutions with time.
@@JoMamasHouse Agreed. STIs had plenty of problems. Plus, Staccato is a much smaller company, not capable of producing things at the volume (and thus economies of scale) that SA is. So it would be tough for them to be cost-competitive with SA, unless they cut a lot of corners.
Great (snapshot) review. Will be interested in the play-by-play review after 1000 rds. Very interested in a Bul Armory comparison review since I’m interested in purchasing a BA pistol.
Again, great job. Set design looks really slick too (;
This and a few other videos I saw from you made me subscribe! I enjoy the honest opinion and and the way you deliver information thank you.
Great point on the witness hole. Thanks for a good video.
And to not do proprietary magazine or holsters. Big win.
This is the most intelligent gun review ever 👌
Great vid!!!! Got to see the comparison to the Bul!
When I went to get my XMacro yesterday, my gun store got their first Prodigy in 30 mins before I arrived and I got it !
I love my prod 4.25 best gun i ever owned
Waiting for the comparison vid 👀
Excellent, honest and thorough review!
Thank you for giving Colion some grief about his…saucy… review. I felt like I was reading _Penthouse Forum_ when I watched his video on the Prodigy 🤣
Would love to see the comparison video to the Bul and Staccato. Looking forward to it!
Finally, been waiting for your review on this. Haha. You know your stuff!
If I can find one on the used market for $1200 in a year I'd be happy to scoop it up. I just really don't want to give SA my money on a new one. Great overview, good sir.
Family Firearms has new ones for $1,267.
Ive heard of your channel before, but this is my first time watching one. Interested in the Prodigy. I really like your attitude, and personality. Subscribed!!
Been waiting on your video about this gun, and you didn't disappoint
"Which means I only have 45 minutes until we're an hour late." I'm not even a dad and I still felt that in my soul.
Like everything about it with the exception of the chambering. If they would make it in "the best millimeter" id buy one
The BDE is OOZING through that Tee Shirt! ROCK ON THM
I can’t wait to get one! I like them. I have a garrison and that is a great 1911.
Outstanding video, thanks for the impressions! I ordered the 4.25 version and can’t wait to try it.
We went to the the local shop to see the unveiling of the Prodigy. The slide on the 5in version they had was not very smooth and felt like it have some finishing issues. The smaller one felt much smoother.
Best handgun reviews on this website by a mile. Thank you!
The fact that you shoot a lot, with a focus on performance, makes a big difference.
Keep um coming buddy boy!
Thx for the use of the bench rest. Waited for your video on this gun
picked one up last weekend, put about 150 rounds thru it the next day, and love it! albeit, my first 1911, but it is nice. Holding this and then picking up my Canik, its like a Bentley vs Jeep. Shaking it there is nothing making noise, shake the canik its like chitty chitty bang bang. I actually shot my xmacro better after shooting this. No idea why. I'd buy it again and have no buyers remorse
Super duper tightly fit? WOWZERS
Man Oh Man, i just can NOT even wait to get one of these beauties in my hand's!!! 🤙👊💪🇺🇲
Here's my 2 cents - Great review as always 👍
Best review yet on this gun. Ty
Thank you for your review; your opinion matters to me!
Prodigy vs CZ Shadow 2 would be another interesting matchup.
More competition. Thats what this gun type needs.
Hopefully this will start getting some aftermarket support to magazine manufacturers so I don't have to pay $100+ for a quality mag.
