I like the idea of adding pressure to the drills. Consequences for missing are way more important than just “banging away” at the range for sure. These will help me get better and I love to do the work so I’m confident. Made my morning. Thanks!!!

This is a great drill. Spent some time with it yesterday. If I'm honest, it took about 6 tries to just get to past the first set to graduate the sand section were I was immediately penalized back to stage one. The risk of penalty and the potential reward of eventually quickly getting past stage 1 really caused me to stop and pay attention to many flaws and factors are hampering my chipping. Eventually, I was able to fairly easily get through stage 1. I will likely have to commit the same process to the sand, exclusively, for some time before I can actually get to the third stage with the actual rules. Good work!

You have REALLY helped my game. Your tip about chipping- take the club back close to your right thigh- major help. And I added that tip to my iron shots- hitting them SO much crisper with power. I'm 6' 5", so before, I was having trouble with consistency because getting my arms too far from my body was disaster. Now my swing is tight- compact- major improvement. And my chipping? I am now focused on holing them out, instead of hoping I don't chunk or blade it. Major confidence builder and ENJOYING the short game, instead of dreading it. Thank you Matt!!

I have been playing golf since I was 12, and this year I broke 80 for the first time at age 29! My previous PB was 82 and I shot a 75 a few weeks ago and then a 79 a few days ago. I never thought it would happen! I have played nearly 40 rounds of golf this year and learned by trial and error, never taken a lesson in my life. If there is one positive thing Covid has done, its not allowing me to work this summer and play tons of golf!

A wedge with 8 degrees of bounce is ideal for the muni & country club player. Simply open the face for more loft and bounce in green side rough. Those wedges with 10-13 degrees of bounce are for US Open rough and powder fine bunkers IMHO. Keep the knowledge coming Mrshortgame. You are getting me through this pandemic.

this is such a great vid. I broke 80 this year and much of this video hits all valid points. Over practicing on the range is more harm than anything. key for me was to identify certain problem baggage holes that no matter how straight ur driver goes (normally) on those holes you just end up hitting those baggage shots (hooks in my case with OBs). If you have the 5 wood (3/4 Hybrid) or a 3Wood fully practiced, and you can hit those with less error of a hook on those holes, you must just do that and keep the ball in play. Because if you had been shooting well on most holes and catch one real bad, its chain reaction to doom after... so identify the most problem holes on ur track of choice and play those safe. A bogey wont hurt on those over taking a triple or a double par...

  • @billybastar4022
    @billybastar4022 3 года назад

Great video, and advice. I love how people who comment gravitate towards sarcasm and negative thoughts as their first line of defense. These drills are great at managing your potential misses as well. As you execute these shots at each station, you will hit one out of five less than ideal, and after a few hundred shots you get a picture of what a potential miss looks like. Where the great players separate from the duffers, is how they mange their misses. That’s where I always took a good round and turned it into a bad round...by hitting a shot that a miss would add at least two strokes guaranteed vs hitting a shot with a potential miss would add no worse than two. Perfect example, I played with my son at a beautiful and very difficult course in St Louis a couple of moths ago. The issue was I had not touched a club for a long while...I noticed at the range that I was not making a full turn or posting up as usual, that for me always results in a loss of distance off the tee, and irons not traveling to their number. And wouldn’t you know it, everything short...well..knowing that I played an extra club on most shots, and made sure to be at least straight off the tee...boom broke 100, and I had no business doing so on this track.

  • @feverpa

I learn best through repetition and turning the learning into a game if possible. I learned flags of the world with an app that makes it into a game, and I keep playing until I'm getting a perfect score. I'm learning elements of the periodic table the same way. I absolutely love this video because it takes the idea of working on specific aspects of golf and turns them into a repeatable game. The idea of five shots, but if you fail - you start over is brilliant. Playing that training game will give you tons of repetitions, while placing importance on each shot. If I'm hitting 40 shots with the driver in a row at the range, those individual shots lack importance. By using these reps to simulate a game with consequences - I think is fantastic. Thanks!

If I could practice these drills I could break 80 most of the time. As a 28 handicap playing once or twice a week I find getting into the low 90’s difficult, and I realize that I do need to practice, but life gets in the way even thoughI am retired. I always arrive early at the course and practice chipping and putting for a limited time and hit into a net to warm up the muscles, but that’s the extent to “my” practice.
A few years ago I was playing to an 18 handicap but medical conditions have limited my performance. Such is life, but the enjoyment of the game and friend make my time playing fun.

These tips are more geared towards breaking 90 than shooting in the 70s. Single digit handicap players rarely duff the ball into a bunker or fail to get out of one. The trick to shooting under 80, for someone who has the ability, is to avoid big numbers. As a 6hc I occasionally shoot in the 80s still, and it can almost always be traced back to one or two decisions I made (going for a par 5 in in two, hitting driver on a tight hole, etc) where a par instead of bogey or double would have sufficed

If you're already playing fairly consistent golf - the biggest hindrance to breaking 80 is handling pressure.
Two days ago i was playing well - started off great and ended up shooting 34 in the front 9. Opened the back with three straight pars - and all of a sudden, 69 was on my mind. I've never broken 70 (shot 70 3x already) so I was gunning for best score.
As soon as I thought of it. Pressure mounted. Swing changed. Ended up shooting 40 in the back.
I'm still gunning for a 69 some day - it is still a goal. But what I realized that day was that I didn't have to go pin hunting every time for me to shoot low. Top priority is to avoid trouble and stay clear of the hero shots.

These drills are excellent for most golfers. Notice on the short game he paid little attention to actually getting close to the pin. Some of the putts he left himself were not gimmes. What the drills do is make you comfortable with hitting 3 key shots plus the driver. This will get you to the 80's. To break 80 you better be on an easy course or playing from one of the forward tees. These drills will help you play tougher courses in a respectable manner and that's fine too. I also think this method will stop you at 78-79. To go lower than these scores you will have to hit the driver with some consistency, hit fairway woods or hybrids 150-200 yards and make a very high percentage of 4 foot putts.

Nobody ever taught me how to drive a nail into a board. I just did it. I was awful at first, it then became easier and easier. Golf is the same, except golf is fun! Don't take it seriously. It's a very fun game. Been playing for 45 of my 55 years now and have enjoyed every moment.
Hopefully I will write a similar comment in 30 years.

If you want to break 80 work on approaches from 150 yards and in, bunker shots, chip shots around the green and putting. Many high Hcp'ers can smash driver, but are then poor everywhere else.

I normally aim for a bogey a hole so my handicap isn’t that good. But every now and then, I’ll have a streak of 3-4 birdies/pars, and it’s amazing how I’m always capable of following that streak up with a triple-max the following hole, canceling out everything I just did.

Was on my way to totally break 80 for the first time..
    Plus 1 after 9 holes..
. then at the turn, the skies opened up ... like the scene from caddyshack when the minister got struck by lightning....
The rain camouflaged the tears on my cheek 😢

I do a variation of these drills when practicing and it works. I do focus more on putting drills (the around the clock drill is a great one) and my score dropped substantially. A lot of amateurs just focus on hitting their driver and 7 iron poorly. I use to be one of them.

Picked up a club in 2014, joined a golf club, got 22 handicap, broke 80 twice this year off 11! The key is to play away from danger & hopefully have a good day on the greens imo.

  • @davidbrackney289

I started out hitting around 110-120. I watched a few RUclips videos on driving straight, and I brought my game into the 90's. I then watched a few videos on chipping and pitching and I've been able to score in the mid-80's, with my lowest round yet being an 84. I know if I keep practicing and put my ego aside (shelved my driver and use 3W almost all the time now), I will break 80 sooner than later. My biggest issue is not being able to chip within 5-ft when around the green. I usually hit left or right about 10-ft, which sometimes I make the putt and sometimes I don't . If I could just chip within 5-ft, I could take off at least another 5-6 strokes per round.

Just work at it last year I wasn’t even able to break 100 and didn’t even make the middle school golf team but I knew I had to get better so I went and practiced everyday I became obsessed and went from being a 34 handicap to being a 2 handicap in a year all it takes is grinding and trust me I thought I was never going to break 90 much less 70 consistently so practice and anyone who can help you let them help you my best friend is stubborn and won’t take advice for me because he thinks he is to good for it get help practice and I promise you will be a great golfer
