  • In the early 1860s adventurous prospectors searching along the Goulburn river discovered the Woods Point goldfields.
William Gooly one of the early prospectors to scour the area was eventually awarded a hundred pounds for discovering gold at Ghoulies Creek in 1861. He always maintained that he literally lost an eye defending one of his claims.
By august 1861 a small village of huts and stores had been established to cater for the diggers now working the newly discovered reefs but the steep terrain made gaining access difficult. The only way in was on foot or with a pack horse.
The township was officially named Woods Point in April 1863 after the area's first store keeper May Beale or Harry Woods. Harry had apparently gone prospecting one day and never returned.
The town is located in the great dividing range approximately 120 kilometers north east of Melbourne.
Only three years after the discovery of the gold roof the area had become a thriving town with 36 hotels.
The richness of the Morningstar reef turned Woods Point into a major quartz reefing centre.
Morningstar Gold became one of Australia's largest gold mines producing in excess of 800 000 ounces of gold at an average of 26.5 grams per tonne over its lifetime.
Today Woods Point with its population of around 40 is largely made up of dwellings and stores built since the town was levelled by the 1939 Black Friday fires.

Worst road in and out, went up there for work in a 4x4. I love prospecting but I'd never go back. Roads haven't been cared for in 20 years lol
