Survival kind of has the hidden text of "Your opponent has to block this" which makes it synergize well with equipment, combat tricks, and anything else that can buff creatures. There are a lot of enablers in the set. Like, the 2/2 deathtouch that gives deathtouch to another attacker definitely would have been better that the 3/1 that surveils in this deck, since it helps your survivors attack!
Twitching Doll actually gives you spiders for every counter on the doll regardless of type so loading it with +1/+1 counters from your Shrewd Storyteller or the room that gives counters when attacking actually can net you a ton of spiders.
Exorcise looks like a great card to draft in white. Not only does it deal with something big, it also deals with the plethora of enchantments in this set.
Regarding Survival - I had a good deck on draft one at the LGS - treating it like a tempo deck. The bat taps something, I had a lot of removal and cheap combat tricks. Went 3-0, though it did help that I got the rare creatures that thrive on this archetype (Reluctant Role Model and Enduring Survival). Bonus shenanigans with Noxious Revival - picked it up late when there was nothing else and used it not as a bad Regrowth, but as a free spell to ruin one of my opponent's draw.
Love the content! I played GW for my first ever pre-release and went 2-1. I agree with you that the survival mechanic seems pretty weak in this format as there aren't enough ways to trigger it in my opinion. I had to rely a lot on combat tricks and my overall gameplan felt very fragile but my deck snowballed really well once it got going. I feel like it will be much stronger in other formats when you can pair it with vehicles and mounts.
I don't know if it comes up in the gameplay but remember that Twitching Doll doesn't care about what kind of counters on it, a +1/+1 counter counts as well for making 2/2 spiders :)
@@haumph Yeah I wasnt sure if it was a slip of the tongue or if you misread the card :) anyways thank you for sharing your draft videos! I enjoy them a lot!
Played blue/white rooms/eerie at the prerelease. I had the ability to draw cards in the late game too. Black/red sacrifice cut through me like butter. I wound going 2/1 that round but it was a rough matchup. Stalked Researcher is better than most people think probably. It's not hard to get an eerie trigger.
Even if survival comes together perfectly thb the payoffs done seem that great with how much work it takes, how much manna and cards are worth one +1 counter, compared to say playing an enchantment that kills a thing and makes you a 1/1 or draws a card
Man the turn that you didnt beatdoen with kona to kill the big creatire then exile another with the fear off of konas survivak trigger vroke my heart. I was ready for the valueeeee. But hey new format. And as others have mentioned the doll only counts counters it doesnt care what kind. i dont think the gazebo is amazing or anything but i think its a card id probably play one of. Usually draws 2 cards and enables delirium. If it was a double regrowth like you thought id probably take it over almost any card so im kinda happy its not lol. 😅
Rootwise Surivor is awesome card actually. I don't know how can you say it's bad. Usually it strikes at fifth turn (or ealier if you ramp) and you get 3/3 right away. It won me a few games and i'd pick it every time
I can easily see a world it’s bad actually. It’s a 5 mana 3/4 and there are plenty of boards where it will be slightly underwhelming stats wise. I can also see a world where it’s definitely solid. But your statement of “I can’t see a world where I can say it’s bad” makes no sense. Of course there are situations where it can be bad.
@@haumph sure, it can be bad in some situations. I do not claim it's a bomb but you've said twice it's not good card. In some situations even mass removal could be bad - every card is kind of situational. My experience is Rootwise Survivor is quite good card on it's own and VERY GOOD card in survival deck. Of course it's early access and there's a lot of if's ...and of course i might be wrong with my valuation. We will find out. Thank's for replying tho and for great content. I learn a lot from it. Keep it going :)
Seeing the greenhouse//gazebo room in action really confirms it's as bad as it looks, tho without anything to splash it sure leaves an even more atrocious impression.
@@AroWolfArts I could see a world where the format is slow enough where this would be a nice value card/delirium enabler. Maybe a slow card that you can squeeze in 1 copy but that's not the case so this is unplayable.
You say that the problem with this deck was playing bad cards like Rickety Gazebo, but the people say that the problem with this deck is that it didn't have enough Rickety Gazebos. We demand more Rickety Gazebos! More Gazebos! More Gazebos!
I think a lot of comments are right that this deck needs to be more aggro, but it definitely also feels like its a little weak. Those uncommon payoffs are all uncommon and often just worse than nonsense like the Slasher in Rakdos. Feels like this archetype was crushing in limited at some point in playtesting they tuned it into the dirt.
I assume he said it because it doesn’t add or remove board presence and it doesn’t draw cards. He may have missed have synergy with the survival mechanic, which in theory, if the pieces come together could make up for the inherent card disadvantage of the card itself.
Dazzling theater for convoke and tap your survival creatures
Easily a must answer with a decent board, wins the late game by it self
I agree that would have been the right pick
Seems good on paper. Need to see in action. But seems like the best enabler in the set.
@@bayardmartins The UFO is absolutely bonkers and is an enabler
That’s if you live in limited fantasy land where you curve out every game and your opp plays no lands lol
Otherwise it’s -discard a card lose the game

Damn it’s a lot better than I thought. Will make sure to keep that in mind moving forward!
never used, but the secret other side of rickety gazebo turns survival on for all your creatures every time
What do you mean?

Definitely should of used excorcise on black enchantment when u had chance you might of been able to race then. But it was a tough spot regardless
Agreed
At ~ 49:30 why not use coordinated clobbering to tap your Kona and trigger it's survivor to put Fear of Abduction into play?!?!
I should have!
You are chronically undervaluing Defiant Survivor!
All of these drafts were recorded in the same day :)

I've only seen one survival deck so far but it seems pretty good when it comes together. I think maybe the manifest deck was more open this time.
I feel like friendly ghost is fairly good? Helps push through survival too.
Great point. The survival deck is amazing on the play but man I bet it feels much much worse on the draw
Yes let's goo prerelease was amazing love this set and the limited format can't wait for next Friday to draft at lgs
Haunted Screen seems good to me, but its probably not. Im gonna end up trying to play it and keep going 1-3.

I ran two of the Clobbering card in my pre-release deck and I got clobbered in the event. It was hard to effectively use when behind.
I think GW Survival is all about Survival creatures and combat tricks to help those creatures survive.
I agree! I definitely did not have a good version of the deck
