No, it's not. The Atlanta Highway is the road to Atlanta from Athens. Kate Pierson lived in a tiny shack (without running water or appliances) outside of Athens that she rented for $15 per month [It was later destroyed by arson]. But the song isn't about that shack or any specific shack. It's a mythical throw-down, down-home, disco juke joint in the rural South, according to Kate Pierson.

"Is the Love Shack a dance?" Lyrics: the love shack is a little old PLACE where we can get together.."😐😌 It's really not that complicated. It's a place where people meet to dance, party and have fun. Is it possible other things where going on? Sure, but of all the B-52's songs with clearly suggestive or dirty lyrics (and there are a lot), this one really is just talking about a place where people go to dance and have fun..and maybe a bit more, who knows. No one ever understands the tin roof rusted part. Turns out it's some southern slang for being pregnant, which Cindy Wilson was at about the time this song was recorded. Could be why they included it. I have a challenge for you guys. If you really want to dive deep into some crazy 80s lyrics, get yourself a lyric video for Rock Lobster by the B-52's and The Chauffeur by Duran Duran (do not do the official video for that song, it contains nudity).
"Is it a dance?" Lol, Umm, there was no TikTok back in the 80's! We were too busy parting & socializing IN PERSON! Imagine that? We could easily find out where the parties & those local "love shacks" were, w/out cellphones, or even pagers which were a mid/late 90's thing. WORD OF MOUTH!!! & Ppl weren't really into learning choreographed dances, that was kind of,..for kindergartners. I feel bad for Zoomers, they're missing out on alot!🤷🏻♀️ 🗺️🕊️💞🎶-kimS
Imagine a group of friends getting together, going down to a remote party place, hanging, dancing, singing, having fun. Watch the actual video by them, just a fun vid.
I remember being at a car show and sitting in an old Crysler, and it was the most comfortable car, and yes, you could fit about 8 people in it. As a 90s kid, I'm glad I was able to experience it.
"This 1989 hit came with a fun music video. This production predominately featured members of the B-52s. The “Love Shack” video also included an appearance from RuPaul in drag. Complete with afro, RuPaul grooved around, even joining in on a Soul Train moment."
Yeah. If this shack's a-rockin' don't come a-knockin'. It's that kind of shack, with some dancing apparently. This song, I think, was performed by Squidward. She just shouted that tin roof thing off the top of her head. It didn't really mean anything except a kind of detail of the place to set the scene. You know... like Faulkner.
This was just fun! No hidden meanings. Just fun. We actually had a little shack out in the woods I'm the 70s where we could go party after all the clubs closed down. This song always reminded me of those times when we danced till 6
The Love Shack was a cabin outside of town where one of the girls in the band (Kate Pierson) lived. It was a good place to have parties, being out of the way and away from any easily annoyed neighbours. "Tin roof, rusted!" is just something the other girl (Cindy Wilson) came out with off the top of her head when recording it.
Cindy was asked once i it was rhyming slang for busted and she laughed and said that sounded about right. In the context of the lyrics the bang bang banging could be the cops breaking up a party so the ad-lib would make sense. she said she couldn't exactly remember what she was thinking when she sang the line but once she did it they all agreed it worked.
Actually she was asked if it was rhyming slang for "busted" and laughed and said that sounded about right. She just riffed the line during recording and they structured that part of the song around it because they liked it. So busted would make sense with the cops bang bang banging on the door. Honestly it makes sense with the pregnancy interpretation too but that meaning seems to have come from the song rather than being in existence before it and it's likely to be a joke about Cops breaking up the party but she honestly cant remember what she was thinking when she jokingly sand the line.
@@alphaomega7191 , I'm going to say yup to what you said and thanks for the clarification. gotta be real---a lot of life has happened between when that song came out and I heard that story to today. LOL Ya know? So, thanks for clearing it up.
@@Z-LightfulMemories - No worries. It's funny we all want to read deeper meaning into things like seeing patterns in clouds but honestly a song like Love Shack probably doesn't have a lot of deep hidden meanings. I think people took a joking riff from Cindy and just sorta ran with it.
Fred Schneider had a habit of writing truly suggestive lyrics, for example his late 80s solo song "There's a Monster in My Pants." The "tin roof, rusted" line even though it came from Cindy is heavily suggestive that his gal is on the rag which would explain his shock if it was a place to go to hook up while the term "get down" many times referred to sex in the 70s and 80s. My friends and I may have read too much into it, but it seemed to make sense to us.
It’s just friends getting together to party, dances and have fun. Banging on the door could be the front door .. get your minds out of the gutter. The love is the love you have for other people and to have fun.
80s and 90s pop rock was heavily influences by the idea of getting on MTV, when they actually showed music videos, so often the meanings are in a mixer of both song and video. Was funny watching this reaction without the video because it never really occurred to me that it had so many sexual references 😂🤣
It's a song from the 80's about a place from the 70's, just outside Athens, GA. Just a place to hang out and dance and drink and carry on, and there were lots of 'blue laws' in Georgia then that limited drinking and getting together--no drinking after midnight until the early 80's, no buying alcohol at all in stores or bars on Sunday, etc. I'm sure there were countless hookups at this place, but mostly it was just a little club or permanent house party that people could go to and have fun, whatever form that took.
He can't. He doesn't FEEL music if it's not rap/hip hop. He can only connect to a song through the lyrics in an analytical manner. Lex is the complete opposite. She FEELS the music without having to find meaning and interpretation. I'm sensing autistic vibes from Brad.
Lex is hilarious!! This is just a silly catchy fun song, nothing to dive into and I don't think there is any deep meaning to it. It sticks in your head though, and that's probably what it is meant to do.
The 80s surely were different times. As teenagers a bunch of us got in a car and used to go rural bar hopping (18 was the drinking age back then, lol). We had some of the best of times in those places and left lots of quarters on the pool tables and jukeboxes. Most of the folks were old pple and very welcoming to a bunch of crazy kids looking to have some safe fun. We even gave funny nicknames to some of these places. One we called 'The Coco Loco' because of the amazing coconut/whiskey drinks made with fresh coconuts. Another one we named it, you guessed it! 'The Love Shack' because it was by the beach in a very romantic setting. Brad, for me this song doesn't need to be about sex but about a bunch of good friends going out to some dinghy place in the middle of nowhere and having the greatest of times without a care in the world. Again, need to watch the video.
Tin roof rusted... An unintended pregnancy. This song's a real floor filler, I love it. Your reactions never cease to amaze me, they leave me laffing out loud and smiling all daaay long! 💜
The b-52's should not be taken seriously. That being said they have two separate handfuls of very cool songs including this one. They are another one of those groups that had two separate careers. They started out in the 70's and two of their big hit were "Rock Lobster." And "Your living in your own Private Idaho." Then they pretty much disappeared until the late 80's when this came out. And they had another handful of hits. I particularly love "Good Stuff' Later era and "Lava." Earlier era. Both songs are singing about the same thing. Basically, that thing is produced when a man and woman get together. LOL.
I do believe that the "tin roof rusted " line was improvised during the recording because she was super in the moment and it cane out. I remember reading an interview when she said that
It’s not actually sexual, it’s about inclusiveness. Black white gay or straight! It’s accepting everyone. In the 80’s we weren’t so skeptical. It was a fun sons! Get ya mind out of the gutter ❤️
My ex wife went to a small college outside of Atlanta and her and her friends drove the "Atlanta Highway" the state road that went to ATL, she showed me the love shack a small club that everybody went to drink and dance when she was in college in the 80's. It was long closed when I saw it.

Lex’s mind likes to drift to the gutter. 🤣 I’m surprised Lex never heard this playing in a gas station… this is an iconic 80s song that has survived the time.
LMAO Lex: what is a rusty tin roof
Everyone : It's exactly what you just said, a tin roof , and it's rusty.
wrong again... "tin roof rustin"....she's on the rag
You guys should react to…
The B-52's - Rock Lobster

Agreed. Then Bill McClintock's "Raining Lobsters" masterpiece. 😀

@@DadWhoNoLongerKnowsThings ha, that was a great mashup, never seen it til now. If I ever see Kerry King playing Rock Lobster on guitar, I'll retire from playing music. Lol
I'd like to hear their interpretation of Strobe Light ;-)
Playing this in the band van as we headed south to Manchester to play some gigs around 1990 and everyone in the van singing this along with the radio at the top of their voices. A magical memory, this song will always give me a warm shiver.
In the south, a LOT of structures have a tin roof (that eventually rusts). If you’ve never slept under a tin roof when it rains, you’re missing out.
I'm rolling. "...so it would be his door". LOLOLOL You guys are too funny.
The 2 girls in the B-52's have amazing voices, 'Give Me Back My Man' is one of the best songs of the 80's featuring an astonishing vocal performance from Cindy Wilson, I can guarantee Lex would love it.👍👍😍
Yes, that and Roam have got to be right up there with the best vocal performances by women in rock history!!!
You just can't help dancing when you hear this song. Looooovvveeee shack!!!
As far as I know this song is mainly about just having a great time.
Who else came here just to see the expression on Brad's face when the singing started?
Glitter was big in the 80's.
Glitter is kinda big now if ya hang out in the right places...or wrong places? I dunno, depends where you stand on glitter, I guess.
"Glitter" on the mattress... this is 80s for "skeet skeet skeet."
Glitter will always be big.
You two go off on the wildest tangents, especially our guy Brad. Love Shack is a place where people go to get down (i.e. dance). LOL
It’s not calculus, it can’t be that hard to figure out. You’re making a mindless party song seem way more complex than it is.
I was gonna say the same thing...reading way too much into this song. If you listen to anymore B52's it should be Rock Lobster.
This was a favorite Atlanta, Athens GA band. They were so much fun!
"Is the Love Shack a dance?"
Lyrics: the love shack is a little old PLACE where we can get together.."😐😌
It's really not that complicated.
Can you imagine these 2 trying to analyze The B 52's "Rock Lobster" or "Planet Claire"? Their heads would explode.
@@sirslice it will be fun to watch. Brad will do everything in his power to make it literal. 😆
@@dipsydoodle7988 It's a old shack with a metal tin roof that is starting to rust in spots, it 's saying that people have been going there for years.
@@jamesvogrin5652 i dunno, I have been hearing for years that it's a term for being pregnant. I can't say for sure either way.
I feel bad for Zoomers, they're missing out on alot!🤷🏻♀️
🗺️🕊️💞🎶-kimS
Despite being released in 1989, this is much more a 90s production. The B-52s started out as an art project, much like the Talking Heads.
it literally looked like lex was trying to navigate her way though a haunted house alone for most of that reaction
It seems like the shack is a literal shack in the woods where people dance, rave, party and hump. Invitation only...
Imagine a group of friends getting together, going down to a remote party place, hanging, dancing, singing, having fun.
Watch the actual video by them, just a fun vid.
They threw a free street concert in Macon , GA years ago! I just happened to go downtown that night!
Not all songs need to be dissected and analyzed...some mean exactly what they say ;-)
This was just fun! No hidden meanings. Just fun. We actually had a little shack out in the woods I'm the 70s where we could go party after all the clubs closed down. This song always reminded me of those times when we danced till 6
"Give me back my man" is one of their best songs.
PLEASE make your next B-52s song "Give Me Back My Man", it will simply expose you to the insane breadth of style the band is going to offer...
You guys are an amazing combo. Brad has the straight-foward reason of the A&R Man. Lex rocks the artist's nuance.
You two are so funny. :) "The 80s were different" - yeah, they were. Trust me. Keep rockin you two. :)
Lmao Lex. You made me think of this song in a whole new 'rusty, back door' way.
Definitely go watch the official video, it's crazy.
Now check out their older song Rock Lobster! The B52s are unique for sure.
Such a fun band! Rock Lobster will blow Brad's mind.
@@ThurstonDrunk Imagine Brad & Lex's reaction to the B52's 'Planet Claire' 😎
It was a old place in Athens Georgia
That people partied late nite
It was hard to get it in but great of you did
'Tin roof, RUSTED!'
Slang for unexpected pregnancy.
Who said that? The band said it was just something random she yelled out unexpectedly.
The drums on this are just outstanding.
80s and 90s pop rock was heavily influences by the idea of getting on MTV, when they actually showed music videos, so often the meanings are in a mixer of both song and video.
Was funny watching this reaction without the video because it never really occurred to me that it had so many sexual references 😂🤣
Is it dance, lol:) Rock Lobster is a trip too can't wait. Y'all are great! keep the hits coming
You guys are using too much imagination lol. Its an old shack in the woods with a rusty tin roof and jukebox!
Love the reaction! That was mine too when I first heard it. It's just a fun party song with cute innuendos.
It was just a vibe back then. Sometimes you can't be too literal.
Brad, stop dissecting every song and just enjoy the vibe!
Riiight?!
He can't. He doesn't FEEL music if it's not rap/hip hop. He can only connect to a song through the lyrics in an analytical manner. Lex is the complete opposite. She FEELS the music without having to find meaning and interpretation. I'm sensing autistic vibes from Brad.
I danced my arse off to this song at my frat house a gazillion times. Y'all don't realize how much fun it is to dance to the B-52s when you're lit...
💜
I’ve been to bars like that in Florida, New Orlean, Wilmington, NC. Fun times…baby! ;-D
I remember reading an interview when she said that
The music video is the best. Not as fun watching the lyrics video
Right imagine this ( lyrics ) only coming out on MT/V back in the day , instead of the full experience of the song
This is just all about fun!! Brad was even moving a little. Everyone knew this song and would sing it no matter what their music style is.✌️✌️✌️
It’s not actually sexual, it’s about inclusiveness. Black white gay or straight! It’s accepting everyone. In the 80’s we weren’t so skeptical. It was a fun sons! Get ya mind out of the gutter ❤️
The look of confusion when she said Tin Roof, Rusted.... That's so priceless!
I heard this one played at many wedding receptions back in the 90's.
Your reaction cracked me up. I never thought of the Love Shack as a swingers club before. Now I hear the song differently.
My ex wife went to a small college outside of Atlanta and her and her friends drove the "Atlanta Highway" the state road that went to ATL, she showed me the love shack a small club that everybody went to drink and dance when she was in college in the 80's. It was long closed when I saw it.
It's just a place where people can get together and have fun! You should definitely watch the video.
This was a college alternative band that had a couple hits in 79 and 80, then this was their comeback in 89. 4 songs from this album did pretty well. You've probably heard " roam if you want to" from 1990
I was just waiting for their reaction to tin roof rusted. Didn’t disappoint.
I think I’ve fallen in love with Lex. She has such a passion for music wherever it comes.
Gotta love Lex....just when I thought I've seen all of her reaction faces she shows a few more I haven't seen :D. We all had the same reaction back in the day when we first heard it, this band just had their own thing goin on.
Gotta love the 80’s . Brilliant 🙏🏼
Gotta see this band either live or video! Fun band dance new wave!
The video is so much fun and really explains everything!
A party/sing-along banger! Everyone dance! It's a party scene, Brad.
