  • For episode #144 of the Podcast, Jon and Jeremy sit down to talk about taking an old car to the track.
Jeremy has a number of Subaru's that he has driven on track, and all of them have some years on them.
As more of us are looking back to the earlier WRX and STI to build track cars, this is becoming a more common thing to see at the track.
So what should you do differently to prep an older car to take to the track? And what should you do differently once you get there?
And is a newer car really the solution if you want to avoid some of these issues?
Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!

Tracking a 20+ year old car with a bit of miles needs EVERY bit of rubber replaced before hand... Suspension bushing, hoses and gaskets. Wheel bearings should probably be fresh too.
Once all of that is golden, you've got years of use and can worry more about regular consumables (brakes, tires, fluids).
Engines and transmissions are a different story LOL

Autocross would be better for a shake down. I haven't even graduated to track days because my cars aren't ready. I definitely took some good info from this like getting a spare belt that bypasses the power steering pump in case that fails and I might need to replace my master cylinder. Since installing the 4pot/2pots, I've been having the calipers stick after performance driving. I found some play in the front wheel bearings, so I replaced those hoping that fixes it, and have it at the shop checking them while they align it, but they haven't found any problems. Keep up the good work!

Got my first car, a 2001 Saturn L200 with 86000 miles on the L61 2.2L ecotec. Did 3 autoX on the original 540 treadwear firestones. Was running mobile1. Ended up scraping the car 145,000 miles because the average efficiency on a leak down test was 70%. Bought a 97 impreza outback sport in 2017 and am getting it ready for autoX and HPDE next year with 245000 miles on the original engine/5mt. Mishimoto radiator, STI power steering system, custom valves BC coilovers, 4/2 pot conversion, and a leaking exhaust. Main reason for next year is neglected maintenance.

Ps the jdm 06 wrx 4:44 5 speed is tough but not tough enough. The bearings failed due to heat. The gears look perfect. But when the bearing fails. And the bearing goes through fifth gear and out the side of the case. With all the marbles that someone put in their before the race lol

What’s also very important and is sometimes overlooked is age of tires and driving on cracked and weathered tires that are expired.

That’s what got Paul Walker, always think about that after storing a car for a while

Make sure to mark your territory at the track day in your old car. I always end up dripping the tranny oil on the track. Even the track boss is like damnit rob. Oil on the track again. But at least he laughs cuz I just park it in the grass and go get the clean up kit. I’m a pro by now lol
