Yeah, it's because you can (If you want to kill brain cells far quicker than by drinking yourself into a stupor) use Lead as an artificial sweetener. The Romans used to use something called "Lead of Sugar".
As for me, I was born in the 1970s, so (thankfully) I missed most of that. However, there's a 66 Corvair Monza sitting rusting on my dad's property that I have to find the time to fix up. Clarks Corvair parts used to sell ceramic valve kit to make the engines run on unleaded.

forgive me if this is a dumb question, I loooove cars and engineering, but I'm not really a "car guy"

@@ScumfuckMcDoucheface I don't remember the exact timeline, but the issue began with a scientist trying to figure out the Earth's age using the element Lead of all things. In order to do that, he had to scrub his lab of lead before he could do any measurements... except that every time he cleaned the lab, it was still contaminated with lead. That lead him to realize the lead was coming from the air... and air pollution. The rest is history.

@@ScumfuckMcDoucheface This made me curious, so I looked into it a little. I'm not sure when new cars in Canada were first required to have catalytic converters--in the US it was the 1975 model year, so I'd be very surprised if your family's '81 Cavalier didn't have one--but it looks like Canada banned leaded gas from sale for on-road automotive use in 1990.
It remained legal to sell at US gas stations until the end of 1995, although by then most stations had long since stopped carrying it for lack of demand. I remember having to buy separate little bottles of lead additive to put in my 1968 Pontiac circa 1991 because no station near me still sold what we used to call regular gas.

Me and my twin brother spent 6 months building a 78 Chevy Nova from ground up. plenty of 4 in the mornings and all nighters and EVERY weekend. We finished it just in time for the points season.
If the car got a scratch on it, it was repaired after every race. We had the cleanest and best looking car week after week. More 4 o'clock in the mornings during the week. We didn't cheat at all
But we were meticulous about EVERY detail that was legal to make us run faster. Everything was perfect every week! We even greased the wheelbearings every week and made springs to keep the brake pads off the rotors. We had the best paint jobs and everything else. That was ALOTTTT of hard work!!! We didn't have alot of money, both of us are auto mechanics and spent SO SO SO much time on that car. We missed times with our family's as well. But it really showed on the race tracks. When we went to any track, we were the car you had to beat if you were gonna win a race with us in it. Either my brother drove or I did but for points seasons he raced for points.

So awesome. People don't get how important just having moral support is on these projects. Just having a friend around to hand you a wrench, or run to the hardware store, or hold up the other end for a minute is a HUGE help. Every additional pair of hands cuts the time-to-completion by leaps and bounds and lowers the stress by half. Sometimes it's as simple as having another pair of eyeballs to catch the stupid mistake, sometimes it's just the assurance of being on hand to call 911("Hold my beer"). So if you have a friend working on a project car, grab a couple of cold brews and drop by after work once a week. It's important.

Love your story. I have built cars for many people all dirt cars I was a crew chief for a SCCA F modified in the 60s. The dirt cars were stock cars and open wheel sportsman's I was also the crew chief on those (two cars) and supermodified (two cars) we raced at San Jose speedway. All the time wanting my own race car that I got to drive. 66 years old and I get a race car a SCCA worn out. I take it out and like you in that Toyota ran the car looking in the rear view. It was the slowest car there. I ran it at Thunderhill Raceway 2011. So I went through the engine (a rotary). Take it out the next out 2012 and the engine has new O-rings break get maybe 8 laps. 2013 I save my money and do a race porting and build a header and stick a 38 mm Weber on it Take it out and get maybe 10 laps and have oiling problems again. The next year 2014 I had bought another RX 7 for parts got it home thought I can fix this it was hit on the right front. It had some good parts in it but I fixed it and sold it. So with that money I went all out I replaced the 38 mm Weber with a 48 mm Weber. Installed aluminum flywheel new racing clutch and pressure plate and did a bridgeport on it. We moved to Ocean Shores Washington. Never got to run it. Used the old O rings when putting back together and when I went to move it one of them failed and it is sitting in my trailer at our new home in Washington with water in the oil. I have to build a garage so it is in the trailer. I am now in July will be 73. So after waiting all that time. Working on cars for everyone and their brother my dream to drive Its not going to happen.

My dad had bought a 71 Toyota carina from a customer and it was the first car I drove after turning 16 and getting my license. It was purple but faded and looked more brown, it had the big hemi four cylinder and a 4 speed manual transmission. For a sixteen year old it was a fun little car.

It's so true how the last part of a build can take forever. I worked at a car shop that built a lot of specialty cars for athletes and other wealthy people. The car that took the longest to complete was a project for a friend of the lead mechanic. It was an early 80s Porsche 911 Turbo slant nose. We had done so many conversions using brand new Porche that we didn't realize how difficult this was going to be. The problem was that the poor car hadn't been cared for properly, and it had been "upgraded" several times by people who had no idea what they were doing. So we had to completely disassemble the entire car and start from scratch. After we were done painting every part and started putting it back together, we had no choice but to install a new wiring harness and refreshed engine. Then we had to order a bunch of miscellaneous parts because when the previous "upgrades" were done, parts were lost, and scrap parts were installed instead. When you spend that much money on new paint and interior, you don't want to have a bunch of mismatched nuts and bolts holding it all together. It felt like it was one of the best projects we did, but it took forever to get the last bit finished. There's something special about seeing a big project completed. Wish I could still do stuff like that.
