Having owned this car for almost 3 years I go back and watch these type of videos to make sure I’m not missing anything I should be doing. These cars are amazing and I am so glad I built mine for me. I don’t try to race, I drive it daily and take it to mountain passes. Close to 100k and still going strong. Your videos definitely helped a ton!
Great to hear!! Glad our content has helped
I drove my 18 VA for 100,000 miles Cobb stage2+ 93 OTS. 130,000 miles total. Most important thing is how you drive it. I drove like a normal human and when I sold it to buy my VB it ran perfectly, never burned or lost any oil at all, and never had to fix a thing. Don't drive like a dummy.
What made you sell it?
My 16 never had a problem just hit 85k. Changed oil early every time only run mobile 1 and 93 gas she runs great. Like you said don't drive like a dummy and they are fine.
Got my first wrx and this helped sooo much. I come from knowing just about nothing about cars thank you guys so much for the knowledge
Great video guys! Starting my mods on my ‘17 WRX
You guys are incredible ! love the work, cant wait to see where this channel goes!! All the way from AUS
🙌🙌🙌
This was great to see. Logical thoughts and not just numbers and this and that. Well done
Sup Boiz from Sault Ontario Canada, I appreciate this video so much! I've heard about doing most of the things you guys mentioned doing and I'm going to work on them for sure.
I've had my 2015 Subaru WRX for 3 years now. There's only 1 mod I want to say that in my opinion is extremely important even if you wanna stay stock:
RUN A MACH 2 GFB DEVERTER VALVE.
I had a lot of boost lag, throttle response was terrible and biggest thing was the stock diverter you could blow through it with your lips.
Get a new diverter valve. Also should mention, the boomba, is NOT reliable. I had a boomba, sounds cool but I had a lot of inconsistent idle. Swapped to a MACH 2 GFB Diverter, miles different. Even some exhaust pops with everything stock.
Thank you guys. I’m a new subie wrx owner and this helps a lot
Ran 370 to the wheel for a year and a half. Just fine. I have 86k miles and im back to stock because im selling it. The number 1 way to keep your car from taking a shit is oil change ever 3,500 miles hands down.
amazing video
Great video by only the best!
Awesome vid just subbed.
Love the channel thanks for the info
One of the best videos on this subject thank you. This video made me sub to your channel
Appreciate the content. New to the platform. Been slowly acquiring knowledge and parts. Sitting on performance mods until I’m done with cosmetics so I know that I’m doin the performance stuff the right way. Keep postin. I’ll be following. You got other media platforms you’re uploading to?

Speaking as a wrx owner, fbo with stage 3 tune from Torque performance. Modify however/whatever makes you happy. Ofcourse supporting safety mods for your power gains is highly recommended. Drive safe ya'll.
Good tuner!
Seems like I am doing everything right so far. My 2014 wrx came with an aftermarket racing clutch, aftermarket rack & pinion, and I got an AEM Cold Air Intake (Carb certified) installed on there. ECU was flashed after install by ASE certified professionals. Right now focusing on body and suspension mods, but I will get a COBB accessport before I do anymore HP mods. Catless downpipes are illegal here so I would never get one. And lastly I get all my work done at a performance auto shop that's pretty reputable in my area. I've never had a car this fast before and I am focusing on making it feel more stable before I make it any more speedy at the moment.
Nice video
Thanks guys!
I love Kyle 😍
I did my brakes as the first mod. I went to drilled and slotted vented rotor.
Have you had any cracks show up in the rotors? I swear every time I see someone getting drilled rotors never wants them again because they crack after heavy use.
That's true don't compare others
Great info guys, I would also say to also talk to your tuner as well, whether it be an E-Tuner or an actual shop that specializes in Subarus. Talk to them and tell them what you want to get out of the car and your goals.
Even meeting up with other people, getting ideas, or going for rides to somewhat set expectations.

Yes! Certain tuners prefer certain brands for each of the parts. Most actually prefer the stock BPV as well.
Definitely go check out our dynotune prep and tune videos!
@@WRXGarage Exactly, the tuner you go with is your source. Oh I’m already tuned by Ron Watson and loving it! Another good TMIC is the Garrett which is on its way to me.
Great video👍👍
Just got a Premium Red 2020 WRX. It will be my daily driver. Just want to do a few minor modifications.
Remote start, mud-flaps, paint protection, radar detector, interior camera, security system upgrade. AOS, cold air intake, full exhaust kit and nice tires for the summer. I’m not lovering the WRX because the roads are horrible where I live. Heard about Cobb tuning to stage 1 but I don’t want to void the warranty.
That sounds like a great plan!
One thing.. cold air intakes need a tune which will void your warranty. An aos will also!
@@WRXGarage What modifications can I do to improve the cars reliability? I was going to continue researching. I’m not looking for power just a really fun reliable daily.
AOS, and egr delete will both add reliability, but the best thing you can do is get a protune! A good protune will basically add the most reliability possible over anything else! It does void warranty as well though.
@@WRXGarage got it! 👍🏻 AOS, EGR delete, protune. Looks like I’ll have to void the warranty to improve reliability. LOL! I’ll add everything else too. Looking at summer rims as well. I will update by late February/ beginning of March. I just have to find a good shop around my area.
Amsoil hands down is the best recommended oil .... period!
This was really informative, thank you🎉
i just bought a 2021 wrx for 28.5k just before all the mark ups! im so fricken happy with this car. it is unmodded and i will probably NOT do anything for HP.
How do you like it now? Would you ever plan a road trip without hesitation? I’m thinking about buying one and doing a 1,000mile road trip soon
@@isaiah979 my 2015 has 114k miles on it. if you do your preventative maintenance, oil change ect. before the trip, you should not have any problems. The problems come when people build these cars too high hp without upgrading internals.
Was thinkin in getting a muffler an exhaust, or maybe just exhaust, my knowledge on cars are very limited, would this be safe or not recommended yet till I do other stuff? I found a beautiful 2017 with body skirt on it, but aftermarket, is this bad?
Hey lads, might want to invest in a tripod, other than that great vid!
As a new sti owner, I couldn't agree more with you guys. Radiator upgrade 1st for me. I love this car already.
Don't know if they can fit another one with them
I have a 2021 and i didnt feel a difference between stock ECU and stage 1.
I’m new to all the tuning stuff as well as many others, is it pretty easy to tune it yourself at home or would it be better to take it to a shop to do it? I had a pretty easy tuner on a old mustang years ago and I did it myself but not with the sti, just wanted to see if it’s pretty simple to DIY. Thanks guys 👍🏻 I really appreciate all the info.
Tuning Subaru's is a very, very difficult process. It takes most tuners years of experience to learn how to do everything correctly. I would absolutely go to a local shop rather than trying to tune it yourself.
@@WRXGarage thank you!!
He said you need to change tune if i add a air oil separator. Is that the case with cobb sf stage 1+ sf intake? Bought the access port sf intake package and a cobb aos. Do i need a new tune other than 1+ if i put all this on at once?
Remember, you can't just buy the dress. You gotta get the new shoes and a purse that goes with it.
AOS is for oil blow by
So my plan were to only put these mods... cold air intake, exacts, Cobb tune and a boy should there be a order?
Can you rephrase? We don't understand.
I have the car capable of massive power (mustang cobra getting twin turbocharged) that can still be driven daily. But I have the Subaru for a fun, fuel efficient comfortable daily driver. That said, I think 350-ish hp would be more than a blast.
Question …. I bought a Mishimoto air intake and just now got the accessport. There is no OTS map for these anymore as I know of but only COBB intake map. Is there really a difference or can I run that Map regardless?
Yes it should be fine just running COBB's Stage 1+ tune. It won't be 100% optimized but still completely safe.
Will be looking forward to if you guys make a steering wheel install video.. I'm debating on getting a new steering wheel myself down the road. OEM wheel scratches up way too easily.
We already did! Look through our channel for it :)
@@WRXGarage oh snaps I totally missed that video! My bad!
I’ve been watching mechanic channels lately. Rainman Ray came across a wrx with an awful steering wheel setup. It looked futuristic, but the car’s front end damage was probably due to steering problems.
It’s an interesting watch, but really I just want to urge people to be careful with their work.
Cheers.
Can I get my advice here? I'm thinking about doing downpipe, exhaust, intercooler, intake and a tune. Thoughts?
Yeah that's an easy, straightforward setup!
How much more wheel hp would you get from a stage one+ with a catback ?
15whp
you need a tune for a AOS?
Which fog bezel did you use for your WRX, all the ones I see say it only fits the sti?? I want the one that has the led.strip between the top and bottom lights in fog lamp area..
You have to find the ones for the 2015-2017 bumper! The new bumper has different size bezels. The sti and wrx are the same 2015-2017 and also 2018-2020.
@@WRXGarage So the bezel for the 2020 sti should fit my 2020 wrx ??? Ok great!!! Santa go back for.my gift !!! You guys know anyone selling a used accesport ???
Yes! Exactly
I just bought a 2015 wrx and am wanting to build on the engine. After stage 1 + id like to install a recirculating or bypass valve, not a blow off. What brand would you recommend for best reliability?, thanks.
GrimmSpeed!!
List PLEASE!!
You need a tune for an air oil separator?
No read our response on the other comment!
do i need a tune if im switching my choice of vape juice?
Yes you can’t be tuned for blueberry and change to strawberry
How about top mount inter cooller?
would u regimented ?
Did you not watch the video lol yes
For oil catch cans do you need a tune?
you shouldn't need a tune for an AOS or catch cans, since all it's doing is collecting the blow by which is a big issue with WRXs (and a majority of turbo cars). Hope this helps!
I’m in Ohio and my local tuner is saying to run rotella T6 5w 40?
Depends on how much power you're pushing! In my opinion, especially in ohio where you get pretty cold winters, you're not going to see much benefit from 40w. It'll make cold starts much harder during the winter. But if that's what your tuner says.. 🤷♀️ idk maybe have that discussion with him.
I have a my15 sti i want to know can I run a atmospheric blow off valve if do a tune? Currently running stage 2. I've heard they are bad for these motors
Atmospheric blow off valves are not good for the new WRX's especially without a tune. A good tuner can use them but they're usually reserved for higher hp builds
@@WRXGarage I have a STI which has the old motor can I use on this application? I just like the sound
The new sti's and WRXs are the same with blow off valves. Not worth it.
Can I run a perrin intake with a Cobb accessport?
Yes you can, but it won't be the most optimized option. The stage 1+ tune will be safe, just not optimized compared to the Cobb intake
If you install a catch can do you need retune your car ?
No mate
What’s the best exhaust for the wrx
R400, remark axelback, tomei single exit. Those are the top 3 depending on what sound you want
New to this Subaru community as I have owned Hondas and Nissans and this video helps put everything at ease for me. I was lucky to pick up a used 2020 WRX Premium from my local Subaru dealership with 32k miles on it. I did purchase a powertrain extended warranty because I know how fragile these cars are but I do want to modify it to have a good amount of HP for a daily. I’m willing to risk “voiding” it if it’s gonna help make my car reliable. Everything is stock from what the sales person said( and I checked everything) only has an axle back. What would be some good mods for a daily? I’m looking at 300-310 WHP.
Again awesome video!
Aloha 🤙🏻
Dom
Honestly.. I really disagree with people who think these cars are fragile.. watch some of my track videos where I'm redlining it in 100⁰ air temp for multiple 2+ mile laps haha.. I truly think there's just a lot of people out there who 1. Don't do their maintenance 2. Don't let the car warmup correctly or 3. Don't use the right tune for the right parts. If you avoid all 3 of those and don't moneyshift you should be fine haha.
For parts: COBB Accessport and their stage 2 package. It'll be 50 states legal and you don't need a protune. I'd also suggest aftermarket brake pads and coilovers
@@WRXGarage yeah I feel Subaru has been around long enough and most of the problems stem from ownership. I baby the WRX with proper warm up and oil checks as well as maintenance. Btw AOS systems, I’ve read that the lines can get clogged and possibly damaging some of the engines or turbo. Should I be concerned on installing one? And if recommended, what’s a good brand? I live in Hawaii so our weather is pretty much same all year round.
It's more likely that AOS gets clogged due to cold weather so you should be good in Hawaii!
IAG, COBB, and Crawford for AOS brand
@@WRXGarage much mahalos🤙🏻 thanks for replying
🤙🤙🤙
What about muffler delete???
Do you need a tune for a catch can..?
No
If I just do the intake and catback then run stage1 plus tune can I just run that tune forever or do I have to keep tuning after I tune it? Completely new to the whole tuning stuff
Once the tune is flashed/loaded onto your car's ECU, it stays there permanently until you remove it. You can even unplug your Accessort after flashing the tune if you want.
@@WRXGarage
Is that inclusive of AU spec STI models too?
After I have loaded the tune into my ecu from my access port I can remove it?
Yes.
I called a local shop and they said you can’t do the tgv/egr delete anymore and if you do they don’t have “tunes” for it anymore…. Is that true?
Correct. Lookup the COBB EPA update
Are stiffer transmission mounts better?
It really depends on what you're doing with the car. If you don't mind the extra vibration you'll get in the cabin, there aren't many downsides to them. For most street cars, they're not really necessary.
ots stage 1 good for stock?
Yes, it's designed for stock
@@WRXGarage alright. I ordered an accessport for my new 18 wrx coming Sunday. Can't wait for a little increase!
The stage 1 tune makes the car feel way better than stock too. Pedal feel is more linear, power curve is flatter. Lower gears feel way better
@@WRXGarage awesome thanks for the response!
what I learnt today, coilovers need a tune.
👍
do u need a tune a main pully?
If it's an aftermarket pulley, it's possible yeah.
Could you share what mods would pass emission?
Depends entirely on your specific state.
@@WRXGarage Ca? I know its a stretch
None lol
I think I probably misunderstood something. Are you guys saying we should strictly stick to the OEM oil filter? cause there’s decent aftermarket brands
Yes, most tuners say to just stick with the oem oil filter. They're well manufactured and cheap!
I been running k&n oil filter and protuned on it never had a problem. 12-13 bucks
OEM Filters are rebranded FRAM. Mazda, Prova or cusco filters will do much better.
@@Smeedia got it, thanks my man! 🤘🏽
I have 2018 wrx with MAPerformance tune I get a -2 or so knock is that normal
Yes -2.41 knock is normal! As long as DAM stays at 1.000
@@WRXGarage ok thanks so much love y’all’s channel keep it up 👍
im in AZ and I'm currently running 5w30 motul, I baby my car driving wise as its still under 10k miles how much would you recommend I switch to 5w40?
What's the coldest temperature you see there?
The other night it got down to 36 which was the lowest I’ve seen I’m also in the Mesa area so in the summer the highest I’ve seen was 115
You could definitely switch to 5w40 then! For people in the north where negative temps are common, cold starts would be harder. But for you I think it's definitely fine 👍
Awesome looks like I’m looking into buying some 5w40! Love the channel keep up the great work !!
If you're going for motul look for their new X-clean +
Do you need a tune for a bov?
Blow off valves, yes. On the WRX its not the best idea to run them though. Much better to run a bpv!
Should you get a tune for an AOS street version? I just got my WRX and I’m not trying to void the Warrenty with a tune.
Nope! No need for a tune on the street version. Definitely look at the Crawford V3 AOS, which retains the oem pcv system.
Great video guys thanks for the shout out hahaha 🇬🇺!! Personally I use AMS oil signature series 0w-40 but its 87 to 97F here 365/24-7. Also ill be ordering my grimmspeed front mount soon, then ill be doing walnut blast, AOS, tgv, egr, ebcs, oil cooler all one shot. I have a 21 premium wrx, do I need a tune for my grimmspeed cast aluminum turbo inlet & grimmspeed BPV?
Nope! No tune required for either one.
@@WRXGarage okay, thank you…I installed cobbs big sf intake with their stage 1+ tune but had to revert back to the stock intake due to the car running too rich and it not running properly

No tune needed for AOS!! I beleive there might be 1 or 2 that needa. Tuned but they might have been discountinued
I think the only AOS that need a tune are the Track series ones. The Street series AOS don't need a tune.
Is that wrx all stock?
The one used in the video here is mostly stock engine, yes.
What do I need to do to two step and backfire and shoot flames
These cars don't really two step in the way that you imagine. You can do 2 step launch control easily. As for shooting flames, it's really just how aggressive your tuner goes for it. A catless dp is definitely needed though
You can shoot flames there is a special set up that dumps fuel into your exhaust also crackles and pops at the same time
@@WRXGarage I am catless
I disagree on the oil modul is ranked at the bottom. The best oil out there is amsoil good for 5000 miles.
For Subaru engines, especially modified ones, the oil change interval needs to be 3500 miles or less regardless of the brand of oil.
He said get a Cobb tune 👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾
You gotta get MAPerformance tunes for beginners and keep em till u wanna go to stage build your car
This comment should be pinned 👌🏼 my mans is speaking facts
MAP Tunes are the exact same as Cobb, they're both OTS tunes. Etunes or Dyno tunes are preferred. Anything OTS is never going to be perfect for a car.
If you are going to use OTS follow the Map notes and use the specific parts per the notes.
@@Smeedia yah MAPerformance and Cobb tunes are both ots but Cobb tune vs MAPerformance tune. Cobb is shitty and u have to have the right parts
Agreed!
Thinking of getting the Cobb stage 1+ kit along with the boomba bpv. Would it be necessary to get a pro tune if I get the bpv or safe because it’s 100% recirculating?
The Boomba bpv is pretty much safe to run without a tune. Most tuners prefer specific brands of bpv tho so make sure to check with your tuner ahead of time
Go with stage1+ from mapperformance and there stage 1+ tune, and yes you can run the boomba bpv safely
Just FYI on Cobb’s own support forums one of their guys says you don’t need a tune for the CP or intercooler. Will it give you more power? Of course. Also, process west is a great verticooler.
You don't need one, but our cars are very sensitive to any change in the air intake. That's why we can't use random air filters. Technically I could be safe to run an aftermarket IC without a tune, but I absolutely doubt that the car wouldn't see a DAM drop or something like that. Plus, without a tune you wouldn't actually see any benefits other than a larger mass for less heat soak.
How many miles to change spark plugs
I do mine once a year. So around 10k
@@WRXGarage damn bro what?? Every 10k miles is crazy. What makes you change them so often? Severe maintenance schedule for my 2020 WRX is every 60k miles
It's just a precaution. It's a super simple way to make sure the engine stays healthy! $50, once a year pretty much.
do you need a tune for a bpv?
Depends on the brand! For the Boomba one you can run it without a tune just fine. For COBB or GFB or something like that it would probably be better to get a tune for it.
@@WRXGarage why is that? Just received my boomba one today.
The Boomba valve is very, very simple in design and doesn't really have any added benefits that the others do. Still a good product, but there's a reason most tuners don't like them.
I THOUGHT U HAD TO DO A TUNE WHEN U HAVE HIGH FLOW MUFFLERS CAT BACK
Nope. Mufflers don't change airflow on these cars. Only aftermarket catted jpipe or catless jpipe need a tune.
currently own a 2017 wrx limited and I HATE it. The evo 8 and 9 are such superior cars even my evo 8 that was 2004 Evo from 16 years ago the steering rack the shifter and the pedal setup all feel more exact than the wrx.. its a scalpel and the wrx is a rugby player....
also with only 1k in mods and the car made 140 more hp on a stock turbo...my Daily driver!
Can confirm. Had evo9. It was bullet proof. Have wrx now. Dam drops. I baby it
When u talk about chasing numbers , bro u can build any car and they can break , u gotta pay to play everyone knows that
lol what?? The reason for an AOS isn’t for burning oil lmfao. The reason for AOS/Catch cans is to limit the amount of blow by that’s being routed back into your intake track. The purpose of an AOS/Catch Can is that they’ll filter the oil in the air from your crankcase before it gets routed back into the intake. I prefer catch cans, because I don’t care how filtered that oil is and that it’s separated by running coolant through the jacket of the AOS, I don’t want that oil that was contaminated back in my oil pan. I’d rather just drain my catch can every oil change. The PCV side catch can is the one that catches the most oil. The CCV side you can honestly change it every two - three oil changes.
2020 WRX- Boomba Racing BPV , Remark AxleBack Exhaust with muffler delete, STI short throw shifter. My car runs a lot better, very smooth gains and holds boost. Didn’t tune. Boomba BPV doesn’t require tune. That’s about all I’m doing to my car.
Awesome! Yeah neither of those require a tune.

11:50 AOS needs a tune..? Why?
You don't need a tune for an aos, it was just in the list of common things people do, sorry about that.
@@WRXGarage no worry just making sure! Appreciate the quick response 🙏
The IAG track aos actually needs tuning to run correctly but that's pretty much only for built engines anyways
An aos that vents and heats like iags needs a tune. It effects your Temps and a couple other things. That's for the comp aos.
A standard AOS no tune is required
I thought this was going to be a 3 minute video of a guy trading in his wrx for a used zl1
dude looks like Brian Laundry. LOL
You mod it the right way by not nodding it the wrong way, you mod it the wrong way if you mod it.
And “ essentially “ the best oil period, is going to be factory Subaru oil….that’s what they come with, factory filled with Subaru oil/relabeled Idemitsu.
I disagree wholeheartedly. OEM oil will not have the same performance as aftermarket oil and is actually more expensive most of the time.
@@WRXGarage hey to each his own….just saying it’s used by Subaru in the factory when the engines are shipped out of Japan. Well, after the special oil blend they used when testing the engines for break in ( high phosphorus and zinc ).
Idemitsu IMO is just the way to go. Even the Subaru rally team uses it. And that goes beyond just being a sponsor and or product placement. Also I’m almost positive Subaru suggesting the factory oil is just not part of most manufactures whole
“ planned obsolescence “ skeem.
@@WRXGarage not to mention reputation and the numbers. Also the flash point of full syn 5w30.

at least 11:52 u claim u need a tune for AOS.. u dont
RIP TGV and EGR deletes.
Track use only of course
Faster than 95% of the cars on the road ehhh really though? You're not gonna get a tune on a cat back? But you're going to put in a tune on an aos? Elaborate on that one for me
95% of cars on the road are less than 250hp easily. No tune needed for catback because you won't see any power difference, the only restriction in the wrx exhaust is the downpipe off the back of the turbo. You don't put a tune on for an aos unless you're running a very specific track model.
What !?!
you said you need a tune for an AOS (air oil separator) but you don’t. You DO NOT NEED A TUNE, for a AOS!
You need a tune for specific models of AOS, like the IAG Track version. Other ones, you don't.
Nope.... AMSOIL is the best oil, hands down....
